dont feel bad i know you love her but anything couldhave happened not to mention its just curtosy when out in public that parents make there children act accordingly
I've probably mentioned our scary ol' library granny before, but she'll get right in a brat's face and say very quietly, "Do you and me need to go out back and have a talk?"
To which the usual answer is "No ma'am!"

My mother threatens to do that all the time when we are at the mall and an unattened kid is running around.

THANK YOU! I hate it when people let their kids run around restaurants like the rest of us won't mind baby sitting for them thinking we will think they are as adorable as they do. Please. If you don't want to watch your kids, hire a sitter or stay home.

Deedo, don't feel guilty, at all! Your niece "recovered" and wound up playing happily without disturbing the poor waitress or other diners. Situations like that will make her into a lovely young woman who knows how to behave in public. (And, *gasp*, that old-fashioned sounding compliment comes from a 31-yo woman here!!) LOL

First, some states have laws about children sitting at the bar. In some states you can sit at 18 while some stick to the 21 law.
I babbled a bit so you can skip to the end to see my point but you might find some humor.
She's 4 and this is the time to shape her for public situations. That being said kids can get bored. That is when some nice "old fashioned" entertainment to keep mind and hands busy can save the day. I see nothing wrong with giving a child a book or other semi educational non electronic toy. At four, the picture cards with punch holes which you lace with colored cord are good.
I was shaped by a Great Aunt (1898-1995) never married (childless need I add) better than any Deb School could have done. And you know they say, those with no kids know best.... were my parents thinking or what. Ship her off to the old lady on Saturday! We had lunch almost every Saturday beginning when I was 4 or 5. We did our share of fundraiser dinners and white glove dining too. My b-day dinner was usually at this restaurant in an historic building where the food was outstanding and the architecture was divine. Lets put it this way, I'd be the only kid in the place.

Thanks! I was feeling a little guilty for butting in and for her tears. But the funny thing was, 10 minutes later she was sitting by me happily playing with my phone - at our table.

That's great! You did the right thing. Kids have to learn sometime that they can't always do what they want....

Hats off. Why would your brother think it's acceptable for children to wander freely in a restaurant, unsupervised? It's not okay ANYWHERE.

Geez, well at least someone was responsible for watching these kids! Good for you...that's just silly to let little kids run around a public place like that.
That reminds me of this time some friends and I were eating lunch at Qdoba. There was a lady in line and her kids were running around the restaurant because she wouldn't make them stand in line with her and behave. She actually had the nerve to lean over to our table and say "are they okay over there?". Uh, hello--we are not in charge of your children. They were climbing on chairs, tables, and barstools until the youngest one inevitably fell off a barstool and started screaming. It was so irritating and I was seriously hoping that kid got hurt so the mom would learn her lesson. I doubt that happened, though.
Forget the past. No one becomes successful in the past.

So we were at a restaurant & another little girl came up to my niece & said "Do you want to play with me?" She was with her grandparents I think & they were occupied with the football game, not paying attention to her. I'm thinking...um - this is a restaurant, people don't play in a restaurant. But my brother (who I love dearly) let her go.
Then they were walking around the place & bugging the waitress for a piece of bread and asking her to pick them up to put them on a barstool. I finally couldn't take it anymore and I went to get her. I told her, "Say thanks to the girl, but we're going to go eat at our table." When we got back to the table she cried for about 10 minutes. It was sad and I felt bad - but I hate it when other people let their kids run around restaurants like it's a playground. I think my bro was a little upset that I disciplined her, but seriously....
