It takes a long time to establish - or change - a habit and there will be moments where something triggers a memory and an automatic response. But the longer I go without giving energy to the old habit, the less power it has and the longer I focus on building the new habits instead of focusing on the old habit, the stronger the new ones get.
In other words, instead of focusing on 'giving up sweets' or 'staying away from ___,' I do better when I ONLY focus on the new habit I'm working on establishing to replace the old habit - by giving energy to the new habit instead of the old one, it seems to work best for me.
