I wish we weren't all so spread out! It would be nice to find someone local to buddy up with. I guess online encouragement will have to do.
Have you tried searching for your locale Melissa? I thought I remembered seeing a group just for that area....

It's a nice balance here I feel. I'm also native, so maybe I'm just prejudiced. I don't like all the hills and mountains on the coasts. I don't like the heat down south. I don't like the snow and ice up north.

I have a few friends/family that have moved to Washington for one reason or another in the past few years. They seem to really enjoy it there and the pictures they post are beautiful. It seems very nice there, I'd like to visit.

We live in Kansas Why? I was raised here. I don't know anything else. I've been to different state visiting and love it. Always ready to come back home. I think I would like to move. But where? Wyoming brother in law is there, it's to cold. New Mexico a cousin there, I'm sure I would find an excuse. MY kids, My brother, and sister is here. I will more than likely stay here until the Lord call me home.

I did skin my knee! It made me think about how I have to be more careful with exercise since I am no spring chicken. I have rolled my right ankle so many times, I know it is going to be the first place I get arthritis.
How about you? Do you have any special considerations you have to account for when you exercise?

The snow is finally starting to melt here in central KS! Can't wait until it's all gone and I can hit the walking trails at the park again.

The snow is here again in central Kansas. I was going stir crazy so I decided to get out and walk the sidewalks at my apartment complex. It was invigorating to say the least.

What does everyone else do to keep moving when the weather turns nasty?

Now you are chatting with someone else too! I'm brand new to this. I'm disappointed there is not much activity in the Kansas group and I wish I could find a fellow Salinan to team up with for motivation.

Maybe with the New Year's resolution time coming, there will be an increase in activity :)

Since it is Passover Season, I've been doing a combination of DeCluttering and Crisis Cleaning (you know, the FlyLady thing). One of the things we cleared out, because "I don't love it, don't use it..." etc, is some expired packaged of Mori-Nu Tofu. If you are interested, read on...

Here's the *** caveat:

I had switched to soymilk during my pregnancy because of allergy to cow's milk, and then started using tofu because of the supposed good benefits, yada yada. Ate it for several years, and after I had bought a bunch of tofu like 4-5 years ago, I'd come to realize that I couldn't do the soy milk and tofu etc because I was getting TOO much of the phytoestrogen effects in my body (messes with my thyroid and I start feeling really awful, plus now I notice that my gut feels like someone is kicking me, after I eat foods processed with a lot of soy and/or soy derivatives, like soy protein isolate etc.).

But I know a lot of people do gain good benefits from soy. It's supposed to be good for reducing hot flashes and other distresses of menopause, particularly I guess with the thinner Asian women.

Now the Mori-Nu people wrote back to my inquiry and stated that "it's best to throw it away after one year past the expiry date on the package" (it's in those Tetris aspic "brick" packagea.).

After researching how it is made in the Tetris (from the Tetris packaginge website)I have some Mori-Nu Tofu, if anyone wants it *** ???

Now the Mori-Nu people wrote back to my inquiry and stated that "it's best to throw it away after one year past the expiry date on the package" (it's in those Tetris aspic "brick" packagea.).

After researching how it is made in the Tetris and how the packaging itself seals it from any germs, microbes etc - they put the soy and the congealer in the packages, seal it up, and the tofu "makes" inside the package. I guess kinda like yogurt, if one knows precisely how much of the starter to use for the amount of milk or liquid you have, it will just take shape inside the container it is in.

So I prepared some meals using up one of the (loooong expired) packages, I think it was actually the oldest one, and it tasted, looked, smelled, every bit as fresh as brand new Tofu....but... since I was the only one eating it (my family really doesn't like tofu.), it took 2 or 3 days to get it all down (I made it in a yummy chocolate tofu pudding or mousse type dessert, think I found the recipe here on SparkPeople?), and then WHAM, I got down with the low thyroid type symptoms. I'm feeling better now that I've gotten it a ways past my system, but don't need to put myself through it again, just to "use up" the tofu...

And so... not sure what else to do with it? Would anyone like it? (can private message me if you want). The packages have not been damaged so there's no breach to the packaging to introduce anything. I'm not sure if it's good for compost? or maybe good to feed pigs out on a farm? or any other non-food unorthodox use for tofu???

Let me know!

Julia

Good for You!!! I don't think I could have done that!!

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

Hello Kansas, I live in SouthEast Kansas. That Storm we had last night, Wow! 74 mile hr. winds it rain in sheets. We couldn't a cross the street, tree limbs are down, well I had to say good-bye to my easy up that was tied down on the patio.

Hello all - not sure how to "blog" but wanted to say hi to my fellow Kansans. I am fairly new to Spark and probably haven't utilized all the features to keep me motivated. I read some of the blogs and it helps to know others experience the same "set backs" as me. Thanx for sharing the ups and downs!

Popping in to say 'hi'! Shalewaechter nice to see you, yes you can so do 10 lbs in a year :)

What happened here since I've been absent, where'd everyone go?! This was one one the more progressive, positive teams...wow. What's everyone been up to, where's all the positiveness :)

Think of three postive things, come on you can do it!!
1. I woke up and the temperature is under 70 at 4 am for the first time in 4 months.
2. Got up and drank a big glass of water this morning.
3. I will be more mindful of what goes in my mouth today.

Basically I'm a 21 year old looking to loose about 10 pounds for better health and to look amazing standing beside my sister as her maid of honor next August! I know a little selfish to want to look as good as her, but hey she's lost about 38 pounds and still loosing!

Life can be really crazy can't it!!
My world was turned upside down a year ago when my husband had major heart failure and steadily went down hill from there. He has dementia and has lost a leg.
He is now in a Care Home and I am adjusting to living alone.

I just keep trying to be positive and hope for things to be better each day.
Good Luck with all of your problems and cares!!!
I will say a prayer for you.

The last few weeks have been the pits!!! Sort of a reflection of a year ago.

The tree that was in the back yard was damaged during the storm on May 30 and we ended up taking it out completely. Sister #2 and her husband came in and we took it down and hauled it off. After that I KNEW I could not rent from them.

I have never really gotten along with my brother-in-law not even when I was a kid. He thinks he can tell me what to do and last week was no exception. He never asked or suggested, he ordered me to do this or that. But the biggest thing came when I went to get a drink of water. He told me I didn't need water and we had words.

Now we have sold the house so I HAVE to find a place and be out by the last week of June. The new owner takes possesion on the 29th and we still have to get rid of Mama and Daddy's things.

So I am in for a busy few weeks. On top of working and trying to find some place to live (not to mention the move) I agreed to put together a video of the fathers of the church attenders to show next Sunday and I have to work on it. At least that is something I enjoy doing.

Things are not going well here at all!

I am still work part time, but what I am making is not enough to find a place to live and it looks like we are going to have to sell the house. I thought for a while sister #2 and her husband was going to buy and let me rent it, but I'm suspecting that is falling through. Granted if we sold the house I would have some money, but I need more income to even rent a place. Right now I feel like being homeless is a real possibility. I know God has it all under control, but I wish he would let me in on what I need to do.

Hi Jenn -
wow, sorry I just now saw this, and you have waited a few days since you wrote this.

SparkGoodies are basically little pictures that get posted on your SparkPage, towards the bottom, just above the comments. They come in various categories - fitness, foods, fun, luxury, home/electronics, and other. They can be used like a personal reward to yourself, a greeting to others etc as there is a place to write your comment, like you would do in an eCard type of thing. It's fun! Kinda like "trading stickers" or "trading cards" I guess - as some teams have a game where SparkGoodies are given as part of the game rules. it all varies when and who sends them or why.

Here's an article that helps explain -
http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/motivation_articles.asp?id=1018

Hope that helps!

Hi!! Where is everyone!?!!
Sounds like lots of hard times in 2011. I have not been on Sparks for over six months since my husband had a heart attack and many other problems since then.
I finally put him into a Care Home this fall. He has adjusted fairly well. He has vascular dementia too now which makes it extra hard.

So now with the New Year near I plan to try to start living my own life. It is really different to be alone at home. It is the first time ever that I do not have someone else to have to worry about! ha ha
I gained 20 pounds since early spring but considering all of the stress, junk food, fast food, and hospital cafeteria food I am happy it hasn't been more!

I am ready to tackle the New Year! It has to be better then 2011 was!!!
Who is with me??!!

There have been a few times that I really missed both of my parents in the past 2 1/2 weeks, but none more than today. As I was coming home from work a lady backed out of her drive and hit the rear quarter panel behind the back wheel on the passenger side. Since my van has been having transmission issues, I have beeen driving my sister's car. I was in tears when I called her, but not because of the car. I really wanted to talk to Mama and Daddy and I couldn't. While it was nice to talk to my sister, it just wasn't the same as talking to Mama and Daddy.

Hi team. We lost internet for little over a week and finally got it back yesterday. I'm slowly trying to get caught up on Spark.

Vickie, I'm so sorry for your loss. When my mother was in the nursing home, I knew her time was short but it is still a shock when you get the call. I hope things work out for you. My prayers are with you.

I guess Daddy's death was a surprise to everyone (except God). Hospice was in to see him Friday morning and evidently they didn't see any signs he was starting the dying process. He died about 8:55 p.m. They had put him to bed and since he was having some difficulty breathing, they went to the nurse's station to get him something to help his breathing and when they returned he was gone.

My guess is that since he had congestive heart failure and had had for years, his heart just stopped. That is the way he always said he wanted to die.

Not sure what is in store for my future. I would love to be able to stay here in the house, but do not have the financial means to maintain it and my sisters certainly can't maintain it along with their own places. I am trusting God to work things out and if it is His will for me to stay here, I will be able to do so somehow.

Had a phone call from my sister. She said that the nursing home had called our other sister and Daddy had died. It is certainly a shock. While we knew with all his health conditions he could go at any time it was still somewhat unexpected. I talked to him this afternoon and he wasn't talking much, but he seemed to understand what I was saying. Sunday will be 4 months since Mama passed away.

It was one of the choices when I set my page up so long ago! I keep thinking that I will change things but I am so ready to be off of the computer when I finish SP so just never do!

I have no complaints about the weather either! It's another gorgeous day on the plains!

Hi Vickie,
I was wondering if you'd get to see your Dad this weekend. Sounds like you had your plate ful!! And having a 25 y/o suicide attempt as a roommate is just crazy!! At a nursing home? I have no idea what preparations they have to do to his house to make it ready for him to get out. And your sister - I imagine she does hurt! (had a friend with titanium plates in her arm from a literal run-in with an enraged bull - she's in pain when people in a crowd situation accidentally jostle her arm!).

But yes I remember many times my mother-in-law wanting her room changed - and once because of a male patient trying to get in her things and mess with her bed. He just "forgot" where he was now "living" etc. Also those nursing homes have specific numbers of "private" rooms, specific number of shared rooms, etc. and they are accountable to Medicare at all times. So just because a room happens to be empty doesn't mean its available to you or your loved one - likely their doctor won't sign off on a private room and Medicare is super cautious about when a person gets a private room etc.

Hope the kid can get sent to his home too! Sounds like his mom needs some therapy too!

And the oxygen is always a good thing too!

Sounds like a busy weekend! Hope your sister gets to feeling better soon!

Julia

This was quite a weekend for my family. Saturday evening we had my dad moved into a different room at the nursing home. His roommate (a 25-year-old who had attempted suicide by overdosing and hanging himself) decided Daddy needed to get out of bed and was attempting to do so when two aides intervened. (Not sure if one of them happened on it, was coming in to get Daddy up for supper or if someone reported it). Daddy's roommate became violent with the aides, so my sister who was arrived shortly after the incident, insisted they move Daddy or she was spending the night, so they moved him. Sunday morning when she got down there to see Daddy again, she found the 25-year-old had become agitated and when an aide tried to settle him down, he again became combative. She called for help and a second aide came in and the 25-year-old punched her in the face. She had 3 titanium plates due to a motorcycle accident so she wasn't hurt, but was in a lot of pain. The silly part is the kid's mother was there and was just cajoling him, not really attempting to get him to stop. He is supposed to be there just a month until they can get the house ready for him, but not sure what that means.

My sister, niece and I were down to visit Daddy yesterday and he seems to be doing well. We found out he is going to have to be moved again because the room he is currently in is supposed to be a private room. They will move him on Thursday when a room opens up. He is a little confused about why he is having to move again even though we have told him numerous times. His oxygen level was borderline yesterday so they increased the oxygen. They said he tends to be less confused with the oxygen.

Welcome to the team, Megan! We are always glad to have another member!

We had a wonderful weekend with the family! Traveling, we saw a lot of Highway Patrol but did not meet one personally! I hope that everyone made it home from their travels safe and sound!

Safe travels to any one who is traveling this weekend. I myself will be heading out after work tomorrow for Truman Lake. DH and the shelties left on Wednesday. We'll be there thru Monday.

Well... it may be that I stay here with the kid. Doctor's office called yesterday and said he really did have strep throat (at the office Monday they said he tested negative, but that was the "quick test". They take two swabs, one for the quick test, one for the (more accurate) long test - 48 hours on the culture. So he's on antibiotics now. We're not sure if we're just hanging out here or if we're going, or just what.

Be safe, those of you traveling - no booze in the car, wear your seatbelts, the Highway Patrol will be checking the roads!

Have a nice Labor Day weekend! we'll be off Laboring, for sure, clearing out junk out of the old house and getting the junk thrown away and the nicer, useable, but redundant household items hauled off to the local Family Support Shelter/Center.

Families are so great, I have a family reunion on my Dads side of the family. He had a large family, there were 15 children but this last year has been rough because they lost 3 siblings so we have to take advantage of these get together while we can. We leave today for KC for a little vacation, Great Wolk Lodge, KC zoo and other fun things and then on the way home on Sat. we will stay in Topeka for the reunion and leave to come home on Sunday. I sure hope that I can stay within my calorie range. I did pack my workout clothes so that is a plus and a good start. Hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend and don't eat too much.

I love to spend time with my family and I will get to do it again next weekend! I will be going to Lawrence to my brothers and my sister will fly in from Texas, too! We try to do this every year on Labor day so that we can keep in contact. Some of the kids have joined in, too, so it is growing into a reunion of sorts. Funny that you should mention the Legends since that is what my SIL has planned for us to do.

I am glad that you made short work of your fence and were able to enjoy the rest of the day! The cookout sounded great! Have a good day!

Hey Lee, I'm glad you had a good time with your family. It's always fun to get together with family, especially of you haven't seen them in a while.

We had a fence to fix Saturday and boy was that a chore. We got it done before noon so that gave us the day to "play". For dinner we had grilled meat and we made our very first twice baked potatoes. And boy where they good. We are so doing that again.

Sunday a few chores in the morning then headed out to the Legends for some shopping and lunch. Overall good weekend.

We are enjoying some cooler weather here today, also! We did sleep with the windows open last night and I got cold during the night! Closed up the windows just awhile ago as the temperature climbs. I am leaving for the weekend this afternoon. Will go to my daughters in Wichita. I hope everyone has the best weekend!

Enjoying the cooler weather. I even got out for a walk during my lunch break today, it was so nice. We sat outside a bit this evening enjoying the day. I may even open the bedroom window tonight.

Got a busy weekend ahead, fence fixin, chores and errand runnin. Then the weekend after, we're off to Truman for a long weekend camp trip. Really lookin forward to that.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I was called to jury duty one time - but didn't even make out of the pool to one of the court rooms. I was happy about that.

Today the weather has been teasing us here. It was about 5 or 10 degrees cooler. I was wishing I had a bike this morning so I could ride to work. I'm not sure what I would have done with the bike once I got there - no bike racks so I'm not sure where I would have parked it. I think the weather is to get back up to 100 tomorrow. Urgh!!!

Also wanted to let all of you know I have signed up for the Walk to end Alzheimer's so would appreciate any donations. You can read my blog or visit my donor page here: 2011walktoendalz.kintera.org/wichita/vlwri

That would be boring! I was called for jury duty, once, on a murder trial but didn't make the cut and was sort of glad for that!

MSDRPEPPER ~ I'm in Johnson county so I was at the courthouse in Olathe KS. It was a civil suit, very boring just two days.

Oh no, Gail, Jury duty? was it for one of those two cases being tried in Sedgwick County yesterday? I was following some of it on Twitter, the court reporter for the Wichita Eagle is on Twitter. If it was, I bet that room upstairs was HOT (the jury room)...at least it was last January when I was on jury duty.

Vickie ~ I hope the purchased splint does the job. Good idea on the no surgery. I agree with the reasons you have.

Daddy had an appointment today with the orthopedic doctor (they couldn't get hi one yesterday.) Didn't learn much other than he didn't need a cast or surgery (sure glad for that since I don't think he would survive surgery at his age with his health condition.) They just sold him a splint to use rather than the make-shift one the nursing home used. He has another appointment in 4 weeks to check it and see how it is doing.

Good afternoon Kansans.

Looks like we are in a heat wave again. The coolish days we've had had us spoiled. I want them back. Had jury duty yesterday and today. Interesting experience. This was not my first time being on a jury either. But now my duty is done for awhile. Back to work tomorrow.

Have a good evening and stay cool!

I am glad that you had a nice visit with your dad and so sorry to hear of the fractured wrist! It's amazing that it hasn't hurt him!

We had a fun day yesterday and went to the NRA Drag Races! I hadn't been to the races in many years but enjoyed the day! It wasn't a quiet day by any means so guess we will go fishing today for the quiet we are seeking! I hope you are all having a great weekend, too!

Was able to get an extra visit in with my dad this week. My mom's sister and her husband came in on Thursday for a quick trip to pick up their camper which they left up here after Mama's funeral. They took my sister and I down to see my dad. It was a quick visit, but still was nice one. He didn't seem as old as he had on Tuesday, but my sister said she thought he was getting weaker.

Then last night we found out he has a fractured left wrist. Not exactly sure when he got it, probably when he last fell a few weeks ago. (My sister broke her foot when she was a kid and walked to school for a week before they realized it was broken.)

Evidently it started swelling so they had it X-rayed and discovered the fracture. They have splinted it until Monday when he will see an orthopedic doctor. My sister said she thought there was something wrong with one of his wrists (but she couldn't remember which one). Although whenever you ask him about it he said it didn't hurt. According to the nurse at the home, he still said it didn't hurt even after they found out it was fractured.
