Janet....been on the Linear Trail a few times and have always enjoyed it. .......... Even though my week long backpacking trip isn't taking place for two weeks yet, I've started counting the days and checking my equipment. The Rawah Wilderness is calling and I'm answering.

Has anyone ever made it to the Manhattan Linear Trail? I've been in Manhattan for over four years and just made it out there this weekend. We rode it all the way and back. It is a really nice trail.
If anyone lives in the area, I would suggest the trail. You can run/walk/bike it. It has some shadded spots too.

Janet...You must have run into the construction going on at the northeast corner of the long loop. There's a lot going on all over the trail. A new bridge over Kings Creek has only been up about a month. This past tuesday, I helped lead a group of boy scouts from Virginia in doing some trail maintenance along the Homestead Trail. So glad you were able to get out there, but sorry you didn't get to hike the complete loop. The green is better than the brown, but I've learned to appreciate the different seasons and what it means for a healthy, tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Again, I'm glad you got to hike out there and I hope you continue to visit Konza.

Hello, Kansas -

SparkGuy shared a very inspirational blog today about his 91 day streak of 10 minutes of exercise a day. I wanted to share it here!!

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5738162

Somehow, his comments made me feel relieved and know that life happens and I'm not a huge failure for not maintaining a 10 minute streak myself. And today, especially and the rest of the week, I know it will be struggle for me, as I need to be there for my best friend. Her youngest son, youngest child, who is only about 3.5 weeks younger than my son, was killed yesterday (sunday) morning just NE of Wichita, in a tragic accident that took his life and the lives of a woman and her mother-in-law on their way to her family (leaving behind two young children less than 5 years of age, I believe.). So senseless, so tragic, but somehow I gotta help us both through this. I know we're not alone. I know I'm not the only one to have experienced this either personally or through our friends. I know I need to maintain my own streak of ten minutes of exercise daily, just so I have something in my own health to share. (I know it's hard right now to think of a more precise way to explain what I'm feeling??).

In any case, fight the good fight, love your family, tomorrow is another day but it's not guaranteed that you or I or our loved ones will have a tomorrow.

Julia

Matthew 6:33-34
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Trailtrodder - I went back to the Konza on Saturday! Beautiful day - beautiful scenery. Too bad not all the loop was open because I was really looking forward to going all the way around and seeing more scenery. I prefer the grass when it is green emoticon Last time it was still brown, but the scenery on Saturday was spectacular.
There was only a few people too emoticon

Thank you for the suggestion! No we drove straight to El Dorado - the in-laws were waiting for us to go out on the boat emoticon
I will definitely check it out. Have fun in Council Grove! Have you checked some hiking websites? They might have good suggestions.

It is hot and humid out there - go out and enjoy the sunshine but be careful. Hydrate well, stay safe, and have the best summer!

You'll get there Janet. .... On your trip to El Dorado.....did you go by the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve? If you've never been there, try to hike out there sometime. There's a nice little hike along the Little Fox Creek across from the preserve as well.

I thought of you last weekend. Had to go to El Dorado from Wamego and decided to take the scenic route through the Flint Hills. It was so green and the views were spectacular. I was wondering if you were out there somewhere emoticon
This is getting very frustrating! I am always too busy on the weekends to go out there again. This weekend I will be in Wichita. I want to see a green Konza, but by the looks of it it will be white when I get out there again emoticon I swear no one has this much of a hard time to go on a hike emoticon

Hiked the Konza again today and got some good wildflower photos. Was a bit humid and windy on top of the flinthills, but it was still a rewarding day.

Janet ...... the flowers are really looking good. Blooming going on everywhere. The hills are so green as well. The wildflower walk went well. We had a record amount of participants, 194 in fact. There were also 35 of us docents there to help lead the groups. The rain did manage to creep in near the end, but everyone thought it went well. Glad you're going to get back out there.

I have plans on Sunday, so I will see if I can come on Saturday. I really would like to see the Konza at this time of year.

Janet......Hope you do get out on the Konza. We spent the first day of June taking in a wildflower hike. It's an annual event put on by the Friend's of Konza Prairie. Even though there was a storm brewing, it kept its distance until the hike was over. I'm out there two or three times a week either for myself or docenting. It's a favorite thing to do.

If you're ever in the Manhattan area and want to get in a nice nature hike......check out the trail at the Konza Prairie Biological Station. There's a 6.5 mile loop with two shorter loops (4.5 and 1.5) within it. Good parking at the trailhead. South portion of the trail follows a low lying wooded area and the northern portion has some climbing of the flinthills through the tallgrass prairie. I love this place and hike it several times a year.

I live in Ottawa. :-) and just started w/Spark People but have been on my current weight-loss plan through Med-Weightloss for just shy of a month now. It's a Ketogenic diet and I really have been surprised at how it's been going for me. It was a bit of a struggle in the first couple of weeks but, it gets better and better every day. I have already lost 13 lbs. It feels really good and I truly feel this is a life change that will stick.

I am forever under construction.

It's a nice balance here I feel. I'm also native, so maybe I'm just prejudiced. I don't like all the hills and mountains on the coasts. I don't like the heat down south. I don't like the snow and ice up north.

I have a few friends/family that have moved to Washington for one reason or another in the past few years. They seem to really enjoy it there and the pictures they post are beautiful. It seems very nice there, I'd like to visit.

We live in Kansas Why? I was raised here. I don't know anything else. I've been to different state visiting and love it. Always ready to come back home. I think I would like to move. But where? Wyoming brother in law is there, it's to cold. New Mexico a cousin there, I'm sure I would find an excuse. MY kids, My brother, and sister is here. I will more than likely stay here until the Lord call me home.

I did skin my knee! It made me think about how I have to be more careful with exercise since I am no spring chicken. I have rolled my right ankle so many times, I know it is going to be the first place I get arthritis.
How about you? Do you have any special considerations you have to account for when you exercise?

The snow is finally starting to melt here in central KS! Can't wait until it's all gone and I can hit the walking trails at the park again.

Now you are chatting with someone else too! I'm brand new to this. I'm disappointed there is not much activity in the Kansas group and I wish I could find a fellow Salinan to team up with for motivation.

Maybe with the New Year's resolution time coming, there will be an increase in activity :)

Well I do, but not as often as I do on the Kansas page. I was born in okla and ended up co-leading the SparkOkla team, so that kinda keeps me busy too!

I was born and raised to adulthood in Kansas and now live in Texas. I'm disappointed that more people don't participate - like the daily huddle and on the message board. I huddle EVERY DAY and answer on several message board games. Do you participate??????

It's going to be another hot one today here in Kansas. I just wish we could get some more rain. My garden isn't doing well and I wish it would do better. A garden helps with the grocery bill.

Since it is Passover Season, I've been doing a combination of DeCluttering and Crisis Cleaning (you know, the FlyLady thing). One of the things we cleared out, because "I don't love it, don't use it..." etc, is some expired packaged of Mori-Nu Tofu. If you are interested, read on...

Here's the *** caveat:

I had switched to soymilk during my pregnancy because of allergy to cow's milk, and then started using tofu because of the supposed good benefits, yada yada. Ate it for several years, and after I had bought a bunch of tofu like 4-5 years ago, I'd come to realize that I couldn't do the soy milk and tofu etc because I was getting TOO much of the phytoestrogen effects in my body (messes with my thyroid and I start feeling really awful, plus now I notice that my gut feels like someone is kicking me, after I eat foods processed with a lot of soy and/or soy derivatives, like soy protein isolate etc.).

But I know a lot of people do gain good benefits from soy. It's supposed to be good for reducing hot flashes and other distresses of menopause, particularly I guess with the thinner Asian women.

Now the Mori-Nu people wrote back to my inquiry and stated that "it's best to throw it away after one year past the expiry date on the package" (it's in those Tetris aspic "brick" packagea.).

After researching how it is made in the Tetris (from the Tetris packaginge website)I have some Mori-Nu Tofu, if anyone wants it *** ???

Now the Mori-Nu people wrote back to my inquiry and stated that "it's best to throw it away after one year past the expiry date on the package" (it's in those Tetris aspic "brick" packagea.).

After researching how it is made in the Tetris and how the packaging itself seals it from any germs, microbes etc - they put the soy and the congealer in the packages, seal it up, and the tofu "makes" inside the package. I guess kinda like yogurt, if one knows precisely how much of the starter to use for the amount of milk or liquid you have, it will just take shape inside the container it is in.

So I prepared some meals using up one of the (loooong expired) packages, I think it was actually the oldest one, and it tasted, looked, smelled, every bit as fresh as brand new Tofu....but... since I was the only one eating it (my family really doesn't like tofu.), it took 2 or 3 days to get it all down (I made it in a yummy chocolate tofu pudding or mousse type dessert, think I found the recipe here on SparkPeople?), and then WHAM, I got down with the low thyroid type symptoms. I'm feeling better now that I've gotten it a ways past my system, but don't need to put myself through it again, just to "use up" the tofu...

And so... not sure what else to do with it? Would anyone like it? (can private message me if you want). The packages have not been damaged so there's no breach to the packaging to introduce anything. I'm not sure if it's good for compost? or maybe good to feed pigs out on a farm? or any other non-food unorthodox use for tofu???

Let me know!

Julia

Hey, just reading about the First Day Hikes scheduled tomorrow at various parks here in Kansas. Kinda short notice for us as we're a ways out from any of these parks.

Good for You!!! I don't think I could have done that!!

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

Hello all - not sure how to "blog" but wanted to say hi to my fellow Kansans. I am fairly new to Spark and probably haven't utilized all the features to keep me motivated. I read some of the blogs and it helps to know others experience the same "set backs" as me. Thanx for sharing the ups and downs!

Popping in to say 'hi'! Shalewaechter nice to see you, yes you can so do 10 lbs in a year :)

What happened here since I've been absent, where'd everyone go?! This was one one the more progressive, positive teams...wow. What's everyone been up to, where's all the positiveness :)

Think of three postive things, come on you can do it!!
1. I woke up and the temperature is under 70 at 4 am for the first time in 4 months.
2. Got up and drank a big glass of water this morning.
3. I will be more mindful of what goes in my mouth today.
