A lot of things do not scan yet. Very popular, basic things like Cheerios has worked for me tho. However, you can link a barcode to a favorite if you press and hold down on that favorite on your phone. You still have to initially enter the nutrition info, but I'm assuming that if enough people do this, it will eventually build up their database so other people will be able to just scan that food and it will pop up. Even though it is still new, I am excited about this feature. I went around my kitchen just trying everything for fun! I'm a nutrition nerd, I know. emoticon

I've scanned about 6 different items and none were recognized ( Oatbran, Almond Milk, Protein Bars, etc) I'll watch for any updates or more info on it - it will be a great feature when it's up and going good.

Scanned 6 items for breakfast & snacks today: Oscar Mayer center cut bacon, Eggland's Best eggs, Santa Fe Tortillas, Chobani yogurt, Del Monte peaches and a generic shredded cheese. Only the eggs & peaches were recognized. My Fitness Pal recognized all items.

I am glad SP listened to it's members and updated the app, but much improvement is needed. I am hopeful for future improvements. Keep plugging away and thanks for your efforts!

Barcode scanner and a pedometer would make SP so much more comprehensive and in line with other fitness and healthy lifestyle apps. I try to use all three, but just drive myself crazy and don't follow through instead. Please add these features!

Would love to see this feature. I used it all the time with MyFitnessPal and now it's frustrating when I use the SP app and can't scan... I've considered switching back many times.

Try Sparkmailing Tom29lk with your question. He is the developer that posts here frequently. He usually very good about responding. If you find anything out either way, let us know.

Actually, all I would like to know from a member of the staff if this feature is planned to be implemented for this great site. If it's not, that is fine, I know this is all free, so no room to complain. I just don't want to look forward to something that won't come. Feedback from the staff please? Thanks! emoticon

I couldn't agree more with CHRISMAIN. I hope this functionality is added soon. I too use MFP for food tracking because it is so easy with the scanner, but I would SO much rather solely use the SP app.

I still will continue to use myfitnesspal.com app because it has the barcode scanning. There are 3500 people in this group alone and they still haven't added barcode scanning?? Also the app came out in 2009 and they haven't made that improvement?? Once you use the barcode scanning, you can't go back to an app that doesn't have it!!

Thank you SuseeQ3! I just downloaded it on my iPhone. It has 4 1/2 stars out of 5 with 370 reviews, so that's pretty good.

It can scan the bar codes. It returns 3 tabs "product" info about the product, "Alternatives" several other choices, and "Compare" where you can read the bar code of a 2nd product and get a detailed comparison between the 2 products.

You can Share, Like, Don't Like, and add comments by product.

I'm gonna like this!

Good Morning Ladies,.........

I'm thinking that most of you are talking about Iphones, but I have an Ipad and am pretty sure that most of the apps are the same,......Most,.....anyway, I haven't scrolled down to read all the other posts,.....no time,.........but I have a =n app that is great for not only giving you points, ,.(WW, even though they don't claim that, they are figured on Carb, Protien, fat and fiber),......but they 'grade' A,B, B+, etc,.....the foods, and Why they grade them that way,..you just type, (Or scan in the case of an Iphone) the product, and boom, you have it's info, plus it's comparable products, and 'better' choices in the same ...it really brought home to me that there are aquite a difference in the different flavors of chobani,.some are 4 points.some are 3 and I think the plain is 2,.........anyway, the app is called FOODUCATE......my DIL has it on her phone, and she loves it,...........needless to say, I'm not going to go around the supermarket poking letters into my Ipad, but with the phone it would be great to know,....I know there are things that my DH has brought home that I h ave been horrified after I ate themn,......haha, duh, should have checked BEFORE I hate them,...........hellooo,...anyway, for those of you who don't have it, it's FOODUCATE,..and it's great,.and if you all already know about this one,..........I'm sorry for rambling on about something you already know about,.......Have a great day!

It's always supply and demand! I'll bet they can tell how many people are accessing the site from smartphones. Right now, about 25% of the population has smart phones - a much smaller segment would be using SparkPeople apps.

I would imagine that there are other software projects much higher on the priority list. Just guessing..

My weight management doctor who also runs a private weight management firm which has their own site is looking to develop a site similar to Fat Secret, Spark People and My Fitness Pal. He told me that all of these sites are designed by the people who run Fat Secret. If that is true and both Fat Secret and My Fitness Pal have bar code scanners, I would think it would be fairly easy to develop a bar code scanner for the Spark People app too.

Hi there. I am currently tracking on myfitnesspal because they have a hande barcode scanner. You just scan the barcode and you pick the number of servings. All the NI downloads into your diary.
If Sparkpeople had this i would get rid of myfitnesspal.
