Yes, I've been asked the same thing by people back home. And my experience is similar to yours. I have not encountered much "rudeness" at all while here (of course I also try to respect the language and culture since I am a guest here which probably helps greatly). And what rudeness I have encountered is, I believe, because these individual people are simply rude people, not because they are French. There are rude people anywhere you go in the world, the USA certainly included, so I don't buy into the stereotypes.

1. The French are Rude
This is easily the biggest stereotype about the French, and the most inaccurate. The French are among the friendliest and most helpful people I've ever encountered. There are cultural differences, however, that lead some to believe the French are rude. The key is to understand the culture and learn at least some basic French terms before you go. A very little effort towards education and understanding will go a huge distance to getting friendly treatment from French people.(about.com)

- i found this to be the most common response i receive, when i tell americans , where i live . do u have the same response ?
