Once a year on our anniversary I like to take my wife to the Fore St. Grill. It takes me a year to save up for this venture(not quite), but it is expensive. I figure my wife deserves a very good meal for putting up with me for another year.

When my husband and I want to treat ourselves just a little bit these days, we enjoy going to Bugaboo Creek for lunch and having one of the delicious Creek Combos. It provides soup, salad and entree along with a couple of cookies, and it is not an overwhelming amount of food. Is it outside of say a 400 lunch calorie range? I'm sure it is. That is why we don't indulge more than once every few weeks. Oh, and we don't have bread brought to the table before our lunch comes!

My boyfriend and I love to eat out and there are SO many great places to choose. Because Im trying to loose weight, I only eat out once and awhile and I choose menu foods wisely. I also ask for nutritional information, a lot more restaurants are making that available. Another way I cut calories is by eating half and taking the rest home.

Kit, I love to eat at home, too! I've been cooking a lot more on the weekends lately, because if I have appetizing food all prepared at home, I'm not as tempted to stop and get takeout. I often go to the gym after work and get home late, very hungry.

I've been making SparkRecipes the past few weeks, and every one I've tried has been good. I've made the Whole Wheat Pasta with Eggplant and Tomatoes, Aloo Mattar Curry (potato and peas curry, to which I added chickpeas because I was short a potato. Yum!), Maui Black Bean Soup, and Shrimp Creole. I've been really happy with all of them; my favorite is the Shrimp Creole.

Anyone else made any SparkRecipes that they particularly like?

I don't go out to eat much anymore, to costly. So, I would have to say; my favorite place to eat in Portland is right in my own dining room. I have my own personal chef too (my husband) LOL He fixes the most scrumous meals. No salt added, and no dessert menu starring me in the face. :o)

Also, we get to kick back with a nice glass of wine and watch a good movie.

As far as a resturant, I would have to say 'fast food' Arby's. I love their Market Fresh Sandwiches on whole wheat. But, on the diet I am on now, I can't get the bloomin' onion thingys w/southwest sauce, or soda. So, it is just the Market Fresh Turkey & Swiss and maybe a cup of black coffee for me. Very satisfying and very filling.

Portland Pie Company is good, and they deliver; not sure if they have a dining area. Their sandwiches are "out of this world". I especially love the "Deer Isle" on whole wheat.

Happy, Healthy Eating,

Kit emoticon emoticon

Parking is hard just about everywhere in Portland except the residential areas, but I think it's particularly hard in the USM area, unless you go into their garage. And maybe you have to be affiliated with the University to park in the garage? I'm not sure. I've taken classes there (many years ago) and also was a member of Lifeline, and parking was not easy!

It's interesting how much better college food has gotten over the years. When I was in college the first time (I dropped out in 1968), the food was absolutely horrible. This was at Boston University. I actually lost weight because I hated the food so much.

When I went back to school 20-something years later, this time at Bates College, the food was way better. But now, 20 years later, the food is much, much better even than that! The campus has a new dining hall, and they've really done great things with the food. Though this wouldn't have been characteristic of me in the past, I like the vegan food the best there. They do really different and very flavorful things with vegan ingredients.

Yes. Parking is often a hassle in Portland. Especially now with all the snow backing up into the streets! One street I know they banned parking on one side because otherwise I could barely get my little car through (with cars parked on both sides). Can't imagine what that would have meant for an emergency vehicle!

OK, this is going to sound silly, but when I took my daughter for orientation at USM in Portland last month, we ate at their student center. And one of the eating places (they have a bunch of different kinds of food) was a stir fry stand where you could decide on rice/noodles, meat, veggies, and choose your sauce. So I made mine about a cup of brown rice with lots of veggies and a nice spicy sauce, and the guy cooked it up for me and it ROCKED! I've been craving it ever since. Price was based on weight. You don't have to be a student to eat there! It's just a problem finding a place to park...

I don't have a favorite place to eat at the moment. Because I work in Lewiston and live in Portland, I don't have time to get out all that much in Portland!

I do really like Pom's Thai restaurant on Congress St. (also her two other places in South Portland) and King of the Roll (I think that's the name; it's a sushi place) on the corner of Congress and State St.

There are so many places that are supposed to be wonderful that I've never tried! I'll have to be sure to get to the Green Elephant; I've been wishing for a good vegetarian restaurant.

I love Peaks Island! I used to go out there regularly with a friend who spent part of his childhood there. I've walked a lot on the island, and it's beautiful!

Great thread, Isabelle -- thanks!

You are welcome, Cheryl!

I went to Peaks Island for the first time last summer and I loved it. My husband ran that 8-miler running race and afterward we ended up on the sandy beach. It is beautiful out there!

I am sure your intern will love going there!

Neat. I'll have to check it out this summer. I have a summer intern likely coming over from Germany and I think (if it's the intern I'm hoping for!) that she will love this place. And it looks like it's next to the ferry so we could catch a ferry to Peak's Island or something too (I've never been to the island! still learning all there is about Portland.)

Thanks for sharing.

I have to admit I don't have a favorite place but will be really interested to hear everyone elses. Maybe I'll learn about a new great place! Like Flatbread sounds really interesting. :-)
