Thanks for the info about the winged ankle cuffs. Since I already have a wonky lower back (which is one reason I do water aerobics) I stay away from anything that might aggravate it. And I would never have guessed about that side effect from the cuffs!

There are two kinds of ankle cuffs and they do two different things. Foam ones add buoyant resistance, making it harder to push your feet down, but easier to lift them up. The kind with wings or fins add drag resistance, taking more effort to move the legs forward, back, and sometimes sideways. Take care with resistance added to the legs, as overuse can aggravate or cause lower back problems.

Gloves are a really great place to start. Relatively inexpensive and don't take much space in your gym bag.

Arm movement out of the water is not considered a best practice, and causes me to wonder how your instructor was trained. For one thing, why not use the benefits of the water's resistance when we're there, and secondly, prolonged arm exercise out of the water can raise blood pressure. Who needs that?

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Thanks for sharing.

I saw those, and wondered about them. The gloves and the ankle weights.

We do a whole lot of arm movement, but for the most part my arms are out of the water. However when I get in the pond with the kids, my arms are mostly in the water.

Thanks for giving me more to think about :)

I wear gloves, because they create more resistance so I get more of a workout. Considering getting ankle cuffs for the same reason, but haven't made up my mind about them yet.

Thanks for the info!

My pool doesnt have anything, so I would have to buy my own. Before I did that, I was just wondering if anyone had any feedback - pros, cons, etc

I will check out the threads! Thanks!

There's a discussion thread by this team on using foam noodles www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes

geboard_thread.asp?board=0x2769x1828R>3075

Also check the "Groovy Move Ideas" thread.

One facility where I teach has almost no gear except foam noodles. The other has long and short barbells as well as multidirection resisters for the hands, and noodles. And, of course, you can also buy your own web gloves.

All this stuff can add extra intensity and variety to your workout. Be aware that it can also cause or exacerbate joint or muscle injury, so use wisely and carefully! emoticon

Does anyone use any kind of extra gear, like barbells, belts, etc? I would be curious why, or why not :)

Thanks!
