Well, I finally got around to starting yoga with Leslie Sansone's "You Can Do Yoga" DVD. I just did the introductions, which led me through some basic moves.

You can see my recent blog for the results. I know I'll get better in time.

Don't give up!

Awesome, Heidi! I'm so glad you're joining our challenge. It sounds like you have a LOT on your plate, but I hope you can see yoga as taking some time to take care of yourself.

Good luck with your new goal!

I am trying to commit to practicing yoga more often in my week. Like everyone, I have a crazy schedule. Even tho I don't work outside the home, I do homeschool our 15yo son, garden (and canning this time of year) teach a co-op class and a children's Sunday school class, volunteer, workout, do housework, cook, laundry, etc, etc, etc.

I have fibro, so yoga is essential to managing my symptoms and pain levels, but each day it seems that is the one thing that gets put on the back burner for later until it's forgotten or ignored as I head for bed exhausted.

So I am going to make a goal and join the challenge to practice yoga 3 times a week. emoticon

Blessings,
Heidi

I've read that you should just soak it in a bathtub of warm water and mild soap. It is best to let it air dry thoroughly before rolling it to avoid mildew odors.

Hope this isn't too late to help!

Anyone know what is best to use to clean a yoga mat. i normally just wiped my down with water and dried it off with a microfiber towel, but in my move from Louisiana to Pennsylvania, something got on it and i'd also like to disinfect it but i don't want to mess it up.

Can you use diluted bleach water on a mat? Or is there something better?

So I did a yoga class today. I was a bit disappointed by it.

The instructor gave good instructions on what we were supposed to do, but she didn't offer any modifications for poses that (at least to me) seemed advanced. She also just stayed at the front of the room doing the poses with us - I guess I had expected her to come around and offer guidance or correct us. It wasn't a big class, only about 15 of us.

I did the best I could and modified where I had to. I'm finding it hard to sit cross-legged. This never used to be a problem for me, but lately my hips just ache when I sit like that too long. I did a lot better once we were on our feet. Not to brag, but I did great on the balancing poses - the one thing I felt most comfortable with. I was also really glad when we got to the end and were just resting in corpse pose.

Anyway, I'm probably not going back to this class anytime soon, mostly because it is at the same time as church. But I'm wondering how this compares to other people's experience with classes...??

Keep moving forward!

Welcome Chasity! I am working on surviving a cold myself this week - taught Holy Yoga last night and had to cue from seated for some of the poses so my head wouldn't explode while demonstrating!! I hope you and your family are on the mend. :)

I'm Chastity and I am a newbie. I've been wanting to get healthy for a while so I hope this will kick start a routine.

My family (husband and 2 kiddos) has experienced a lot of sickness this year, and I just had a tonsillectomy last week in an effort to stop the cycle. Plus, my sister-in-law is getting married in just a few months - really need to fit into that bride's maid dress.

Today is day 5 in a row of doing yoga to one degree or another. I'm loving it. I fight my brain a little on the...well, I can skip today... but then I find myself on my mat anyway. :) Gotta love that. Today was actually a yoga class which was lovely. I think I may be sore to some degree tonight, but perhaps a nice relaxing session tonight!

New to the group, here :) My name is Erica. I'm just getting back on board with my yoga routine... it's been quite awhile and I can't explain exactly why. However, I have to say that in the last few days as I've laid aside everything in my day, got on my mat, and talked to the Lord, the difference that I have experienced in mood and well being is phenomenal. I really miss this. That being said, my new focus is on meeting God in daily devotions in the early morning and evening and on my mat. I'm excited to see the changes that come my way!

Hi, I "just" joined, but really, I'm just rejoining under my new user name. I fell off the weight loss wagon and entered a period of depression and discouragement... and when I thought back to when it was that I felt strongest and most confident, it was here on SparkPeople, so that's why I rejoined the site.

I rejoined this group because I love how yoga makes me feel. It is the one exercise I absolutely miss when I don't do it! Anyway, glad to be back!

Deb

Anybody out there? I know this has always been a quiet group but I hope you will speak up with any questions you may have as well as share your insights! I like that even though we don't necessarily have conversation each day, there are resources and ideas here when we want them. I love reading blogs and comments from others Christians practicing yoga.

Have a blessed day!

Peace, Liz

Hi!! I teach Holy Yoga at my church and get my training for that through www.holyyoga.net. My daily practice is either on my own or through DVDs. I don't get to live classes very often, unfortunately (other than the ones I teach!). Holy Yoga is a vinyasa/flowing style. I also have training (RYT-200) through YogaFit.

I had a nice, short practice at home this morning - especially nice to loosen up the muscles and move slowly after a 5k race yesterday!

Hey all my fellow yogies. I got in some practice today, and it was pretty challenging. I am planning on doing a little more later, some in the more relaxing fram of mind. I feel great!

Anyone want to tell me where you get your yoga instruction from and what kind?

We now have 100 members on this team! Whoo-hoo! We continue to be pretty quiet, though, so I hope that won't keep folks from getting threads going at any time. It is great to have so many SP friends who practice Holy/Christ-centered yoga!!

Thanks for being here!

Happy Holy Week everyone!! We had a great, tough, practice in my Holy Yoga class last night. Message about the Widow's mite. Seder at church tonight and my sister and her kids are visiting. Wonderful weather, too! I hope you all have a wonderful Easter - and let's all take time to remember the sacrifice of Good Friday as well. It's Friday.... but Sunday's coming!

How is everyone doing? I am completely exhausted but had a nice weekend. I am getting enough sleep but am still tired. I am thinking the Easter candy may be the culprit! Ugh. Anyway, it is a sunny Monday here and I am looking forward to teaching yoga tonight and maybe an easy walk in the sunshine. :)

Good to BE back - thanks! :)

Once you get the flow, I do think you will love that DVD! Remember that you can always substitute a low cobra for up dog and child's pose for down dog if you need to dial it down a little bit (and, of course, kneeling plank for full plank!).

Peace,
Liz

Good to see you back!

Today I tried the 2nd Holy Yoga DVD - workout 2, "Flow". It was hard for me to keep up when she started going - forward bend, plank, upward dog, downward dog, back up... I'd get into one position and she's already talking about the next one... phew!

I know I'm going to enjoy it once I get into the 'flow' of it.

Keep moving forward!

I LOOOOOVE that book! I am hoping someday soon to hear Thomas Ryan speak in person. How do you like the podcast? I am officially finished with my (and the kids) 21 day media fast today. It has been really nice to not feel tied to the internet - although I admit to checking email and the occasional response on here. Staying off of facebook was an especially good dscipline. I hope to keep it minimal even though the fast is over.

I do think the retreat will make a big differnce. I didn't go on the training retreat but was already RYT-200 before doing my HY training. Can't wait to go to the reunion retreat in November. What kids of questions do you have? Don't know if I will be able to answer but am happy to try - either here or by email.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Ok, So my Holy Yoga on line classes are finished, and now I am looking forward to retreat. I still have to finish reading "Prayer of Heart and Body".

Being new to all this is rather confusing... I am hoping retreat will answer all my questions.

I plan on doing Booke's "podcast" on Psalm 84 today.

Hey Deb,
If you want to know more, look up Lenten practices on the internet. You will find out more than you ever wanted to know! Ha! emoticon Or, just read the thread as it grows.

Getting back to the Yoga poses discussion.....I am starting to enjoy twists more. I have a problem with twists in a sitting position, however. When I go as far into the pose as feels good and challenging, then I end up with a headache and nausea! Really strange....I must be irritating a nerve. I discovered however, that I can twist on the floor and do just fine. So I will be doing those now instead of the sitting up ones.

It is so great to see progress, isn't it??? How was your first live class Dianne?

I LOVE down dog as a rest pose now but still remember when it was just work work work. It was also a biggie for me to gain flexibility in my back - I never could do a backbend as a kid but then at 42 love doing a full wheel. OK, not 42 quite yet, but getting there in just a couple of months. I round up ;).

I just read a blog on change on the HY site - good stuff. I just read the book she mentions "Wonderful Spirit-Filled Life" and it is amazing.

I think it is called bridge, anyway. It is the one where you put lie on your back, bend your knees, put your feet close to your butt, and using your legs/abs lift your rear off the floor, and allow your shoulders to be the support on the floor. You really have to use your gluts and abs on that one. I used to find it terribly hard to do, but am gradually getting better at it.

Warrior was tough for me today, because I'm still sore from a workout I did on Saturday. Lots of lower body work.

I don't think I've done bridge - none of the workouts I have tried yet do that one.

Hello Yoga friends,
I am finding down dog easier as I continue with persisting in practicing. I am amazed that on SOME days it actually feels "restful" to get back to down dog. So, I guess I am making a little progress that way too. I find that the warrior poses are easier too, as well as bridge. What about you?

Good morning! After taking a weekend off and not working out at all for several days, I got up this morning and decided that a nice sun salute routine would be the best thing to get me going. And it did!

I recall when I first started yoga I thought that downward dog pose was difficult - I didn't like holding the position for very long. Now that I've done it for a while, I am almost thankful whenever we get into downward dog, because it's become a restful position!

Anyone else notice progress like that recently and want to share?

Keep moving forward!

Good morning everybody! I hope you had a great weekend! You have probably already figured this out but wanted to let you know that I changed my name. Back to something similar to what I started with in my early SP days. Blue*Radley is the name of my kettlebell (who I still love, but just don't spend nearly as much time with as my yoga mat!) so this one is a little more "me."

If yoga hurts, definitely don't do it. The foam roller give a sort of deep tissue massage that can be a little painful! It presses on areas that don't normally get stretched (fascia?) and breaks up tightness as you roll it. It may be what your PT gave you, just used in a diff way. Google it if you get a chance - there are lots of great stretches you can do with it - but it is definitely not the gentle challenge we look for in yoga! ;)

Can someone explain the foam roller thing? I have a long blue tube made of styrofoam that my physical therapist gave me. I lie on it from tailbone to head and do a few exercises on it to help loosen up my back and neck before my Yoga practice. Is this what you are talking about? If it hurts, aren't you NOT supposed to do it? That is what I have been taught.

Great metaphor!!! You can get more rolling in if you count your breathes. I do a little moving around on the tight spots as I breathe. I get more massaging in that way.

The shower is a great idea to warm muscles. I love my foam roller and need to get back on it as I prepare to walk more and hopefully run again in spring. It is really helpful on my tight IT bands.

Isn't is amazing how the breath can help us get through painful things? Great metaphor for the Holy Spirit. :)

I got on my foam roller yesterday!!! Talk about pain. I did focus more on breathing than on the pain. I got in the shower first to warm up the muscles and I think that is better than just going at it when they are cold. I'm sticking to it!

How exciting you are getting certified!!!

Wonderful! I am so excited for you and those you will touch through your ministry. I am going on the 5 year reunion retreat this fall while I am taking the Master's program. I feel like packing right now!! Brooke is wonderful, isn't she? A real heart for ministry and tremendously knowledgable about yoga.

Looking forward to hearing more from you about your HY training!

I am doing the 200. It was wonderful. I don't think anyone can go through the program and not be profoundly changed. Brooke is so humble and so gifted.

I can't wait to meet everyone at retreat.

Awesome!! I started the Master's training Tuesday and it was amazing even in the first session. Are you doing the 200 hour or the 20? I will probably listen in on some of the calls for some review. I can't wait to hear more from you about how it is going!!

I hear you! I love my foam roller, too, but agree that it is, er, quite uncomfortable while I am using it. I try to keep a "hurts so good" attitude when I can.

Just a few minutes can really make a difference. Once I get moving I want to keep moving, but it is often hard to get started. Inertia. Ugh.

Good luck loosening up that tightness! Little by little you will get there.

Here is my challenge - procrastination. I know yoga will help me feel better but I just don't do it. Also, the foam roller helps tremendously but it is excruciating. I know I just need to make a decision and do it. I do have to remember I'm not gonna take care of all this tightness in one day or week but in being consistent.

Just checking in to ask for your suggestions (I'll also send a team message out to those who get Sparkmail). Please let me know what you would like to see on these boards. What would help you to strengthen your yoga practice, physically and spiritually? Thanks in advance for your input!

Yay! Glad to hear you liked it! I have both of these DVDs and like them as well. Level 2 is definitely more challenging, but I also felt like level 1 was a challenge. The abs section was what surprised me! I really like to work my hips - they can really contribute to back pain. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

It has both Level 1 and Level 2 discs. I did the Level 1 routine today.

I have to say, she worked the hips a lot more than I'm used to, and I could feel it! It's good, I'm obviously tight in that area. And I learned a few new poses!

She's very good at explaining the positions - even down to the tiny corrections that aren't obvious from just watching. I am really glad I got them and will be using them a lot!

Keep moving forward!

Good morning! Tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent! Does anyone have special plans for their yoga practice during this season? I will be teaching 12 Days of Holy Yoga in December (not all in a row, but usally I only teach once a week at my church so adding in several days to step it up for Christmas). We will focus a lot on finding quiet anticipation and praise rather than frenzy during the Christmas season.

I wish I had found yoga at 17 instead of, er, 34, I think? These last several years are a blur. Anyway, what a blessing for you to share this with her - and for her to have a lifelong practice to help her be physically healthy and grow closer to Christ!

The above link is from youtube, but was compiled from another site called fathersloveletter.com. The pictures are beautiful, but the voiceover alone would make a nice background for gentle postures or relaxation. I got this from the Holy Yoga blog www.holyyoga.net , then click HY blog on the purple bar across the top. I'll post this under the scripture thread, too. I hope everyone is having a blessed day!

Thanks for the DVD suggestion!

I have both Holy Yoga (Brooke Boon) and Yoga for Christians (Susan Bordenkircher) and LOVE both of them. Definitely NOT rap music - nice and calming. There are clips of Holy Yoga on Youtube and clips of the Susan Bordenkircher one on her website (www.christianyoga.us). The DVDs that come with the books on amazon are level 1 (for Holy Yoga) and Volume 3 (for Yoga for Christians).

Here is a youtube clip for Holy Yoga:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdmyHYsSbxw

If you search Holy Yoga on youtube you get several other clips as well. I didn't have any luck on youtube looking for the Bordenkircher one - I think because the more generic one calls up too many other things.

Have a great weekend!
:)

I agree about the empty stomach pain. On Tuesday, it was nearly 2 hours after I ate breakfast that I did my yoga class, and the heartburn was nasty. It probably had a lot to do with my big stomach and my leg smashing his magic stomach. But I agree that a yoga session is definitely better on an empty stomach one of his stomach with a green drink.

having just finished lunch, and updated my sparks food tracker, I'm going to wait before going downstairs and seeing what the DVR did with what Patty somebody suggested on this team. The inhale show yoga show.

I checked out the Christian yoga sites. I'm not interested in the DVDs with any kind of rapping style, but am interested in those that have Scripture and relaxing, meditative music. Has anyone purchased any of these DVDs and what can they provide as way of commentary? I went on YouTube, and that's where saw the rapper one.

if anyone enjoys Pilates, I have added a link for a DVD that I own. I've chatted with the developer and the person in the DVDs via e-mail, and she's a lovely Christian woman with a heart for helping women be all they can be. shapedbyfaith.com/ . i have the Pilates for the full DVD. From the website, it looks like it's available with another one. I hope it's still available by itself. It gives me great joy to perform the movements with Scripture. The timing is wonderful.

Oooh. Hard call. I really like them both. Both books also have great instruction on poses and sequences. The Bordenkircher (Yoga for Christians) video is more strenuous, so the Boon (Holy Yoga) one might be best for a beginner (although it also has a tough ab section in the middle!). The nice feature of Brooke Boon's video is that it has five choices for scripture reflections. The actual practice is the same for each, but you can choose a different reflection depending on what you'd like to focus on that day. Both videos are also available individually from their particular websites (as well as other videos for different levels), but it is cheaper to buy the book/dvd combo from amazon.

If you want to look at clips, there are some Holy Yoga clips on youtube. (search "Holy Yoga") and I think there are clips of Susan Bordenkircher's on her website (christianyoga.us).

I can't wait to hear what you choose and how you like it!

I didn't find any of the DVD's at my local mall(small) but I did find a book I wanted called "The Artist Way" so I was happy about that.

Of those two DVD's which one do you like the best?

You may b able to find a DVD in a larger bookstore (either Holy Yoga by Brooke Boon or Yoga for Christians by Susan Bordenkircher) - otherwise, your best bet is probably online. Happy shopping!

Hi Liz,

Thanks for your prayers and the prayers of others. My daughter, is coming home today. They are calling it a mini stroke. The MRI showed no brain damage but she did lose the vision in her right eye. So far it has not came back. Things could of been a lot worse and I am so happy she is coming home today.

This past week I switched to a flexitariean diet and lost 2 pounds in 5 days, with no exercise. My exercise has really fell by the way side. Now that this crisis is over I am going to focus on getting it going. Hope everyone has a great day!

Thanks for answering my question. I am sad to report today that a hour ago I received a upsetting phone call that my 40 year old daughter has been hospitalized with a stroke. I am still shaking. I am trying to calm down. I will not be on my computer to post for awhile. I know I will be in your heart and prayers. Take Care. emoticon Joy

Hi Joy! I'm sure everyone is different, so I'll look forward to reading everyone's answers as well. Good questions. For me:

In an ideal world, I'd do my yoga first thing in the morning, before eating - that is not always the reality though. I teach two classes a week and they are in the evenings, only because that is when people can get there. It is best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Ideally, not eating for two hours before. Sometimes I cut it too close with my evening class and regret it!

You didn't ask this, but the other thing I would add is that a little yoga several times a week is better than one long session a week. I find that my life is most in balance (physically and spiritually) when I am getting on my mat just about every day. Right now that is not the case and I am feeling the difference. A daily practice is ideal.

Blessings as you begin your practice!!

Hi! I am new. I use to do a little yoga but I am having trouble getting started again. I want to buy one of those Christian DVDs on Yoga. But I would really like to know when do all of you do your Yoga? Mornings? Before Breakfast or After? Midday? Evening? If you eat first , how long do you wait after you eat before Yoga? Need suggestions and help. Thanks
