Hey that's great Peony! I'm sure they were more than happy if they asked you for more work and probably you did a good job i.e.: not endangering life by missing something in your translation ;)

Well interesting turn of events...
About ten days or so ago, the guy who asked for the translation asked to send whatever I was ready with, I sent the first forty or so pages.
Now, as I am still waiting for helicopter guy's reply, they called my father (who is my "agent" in this) and ask if I can edit and set to pages as they want to use it as it is... (withouth working on, editing or checking it...)which means they were rather satisfied with the first part...
Or at least I hope so.
Thankfully there isn't any topic in the text that should endanger life, even if it would be mistranslated.
But I so wish they would be happy with my work. Even happy enough to give me more...)

Actually, if you look at his posts and remarks, he is not so nice... that is why I was ever so careful to approach him, but it turned out to be a good idea...

Yes, he looked through the first 25 pages or so...
He said I did very good job with the literal translation, and up to there he only made a couple of suggestions to change ot rephrase a couple of proffesional things, so it seems good.
I did rest on sunday (though I had to go with my dad to interpret which was rather difficult, he was to explain all the circumstances of an aircrash (which part was too weal, where did it broke, etc). I am starting with the "fine tuning" tomorrow.

Good news everyone! I found somebody who is willing to look through my project. I rarely know this guy from a message board... he is a retired us airforce helicopter pilot.I approached him with some questions about special aviation phrases and he was more than happy to help out...
He said he cannot be counted on grammar or spelling (though the computer takes care of that LOL) butI said as long as he knows words like loog-book, flight surgeon, and stuff like that I am happy with him...LOL.
This is important for me, because if I do it well (and fast enough) they might give me other works too, which woul dbe a real blessing.

I think after 18 years of living toogether we can call him my husband... he lived in Caracas in the eighties I believe, it was before I met him... He also used to in Porto la Cruz (is that correct?)
I've never been there... and will not go...with him at least.

No, non hablo - solo intiendo!
And that's the only thing Spanish that ever crosses my lips - lol!
Speaking of Venezuela, I thought of my friend Nelly. She's the only Southamerican I know ~peronalally~. I had the privilege of meeting her through work. We instantly clicked together. After an entire morning of business talk, she told me she went to German School - Caracas. I went to German School - Athens, so there was a clear connection.

Oh, my! The world is really shrinking!

He played for the Filharmonico de Maricaibo (sp?). He's a French horn player & has been w/ the Vancouver (BC) Symphony for the last 20 or so yrs, so Venezuela was a long time ago, & before me! LOL

It sounded beautiful, but very hot & humid b/c it's so near the equator. They were right near Lake Maricaibo.

Translating was another story! I can't think of a more enjoyable and rewarding job!
I never quite believed that people were paying me to do it!

Sheesh, Peony, I don't know if I would be able to do so well on some of the English tests you've taken! I grew up speaking the stuff & nearly majored in English (or at least minored in it) in college (almost minored in espanol, too - but I remember more English than Spanish, LOL). The only reason I use some of the grammar I do is b/c it just sounds right. I don't think that would score very high! LOL

I think you multi-linguists are pretty awesome!!!!

I do LOVE translating...
but teaching never interested me... So many asked if I want teach english , but I always say no, except if they want practice conversations...
Avtually I do NOT KNOW the grammatical rules, though (according the language tests I've done -intermediate and advanced level, all above 95%)I CAN use them fairly well... just don't ask me , for eaxample why did I use that past tense...LOL

Oh, BTW you wouldn't need to know any Hungarian to look through an English text to see if there is some really stupid mistake (grammatical, or phrasing, or whatever...)I am sitting here for the second hour, going through the same sentence (and posting instead...

Actually I need to find a couple of special phrases, like opration manual, and there is the word of "operator" of an airplane, but as in an organization there is difference between the operator, as the organization who "keeps" the airplane, and between the actual person who flies it... things like that. I wish I could find some rules like this on the net. As I told you I did translated similar things from English to Hungarian, and I did used those words, but cannot remember and i can't find them in the dictionary. Today is a banking holiday, as it is the day of the dead, and everzthing is closed, but I might go to a bookstore tomorrow and look for the biggest available dictionary... I wanted one for so long anyway...

Yeah, my English, and Hungarian, I used to know a bit of russian (I did grew up in the communist system)but I forgot all of it, and such a tiny bit of german it isn't worth mentioning...

Vicky, it isn1t really aviation stuff, much rather the basic document of an Aviation Club... I remember translating similar stuff from English, but I have no idea if I could find the original, english text...I already called my father and asked him to dig them out for me from his files, just to check on a couple of phrases, but he will not be able to do that until sunday.
My usual from English to Hungarian technical stuff goes through a careful checking by him, but unfortunately he doesn1t know any english (that's why he needs me, LOL)

Wow! We certainly have a polyglot team! I am so impressed by your multi-lingualism.

I only know English.

and high-school Spanish

and grocery store French
(my 1st French words were "sans gras," LOL)
(labels are in both English & French in Canada, & for some reason, the stock clerks face out the French a lot of the time, even in English-speaking western Canada!)

(sans gras is non-fat, btw)

I've never done anything aviation-related, so I couldn't help you!
But you probabaly already know that taking on a new transalting job is a leap of faith.
If you believe it, you can do it!

I actually watched the guy take dh's bike. I was sitting here at the computer & saw this guy walk in our carport. I just sat here, stunned, for a bit, & then went to the back door to see what he needed, & there was no sign of him except the lingering smell of his cigarette smoke (blech). Had no idea what was going on, but when I told dh about it when he came home later, he went out & said his bike was gone. D'oh!

I called the police & they didn't seem to want to know about it. Grrrr.

And back, a ways ago, when I was living in Yakima in central Washington State (NOT my favourite place on earth!), somebody stole my snow shovel, right from my back step! Grrrrrr! That's pretty low!!

Anyway, it's nice to see Peony's cool dolphin tat around these parts again. Add her to our international list from the 2-mile challenge thread. She's from Hungary! Wow!!

Does anybody else have "It's a Small World Afterall" repeating itself relentlessly in their heads???

Hey Peony!

Nice to see you back and sorry about the bike. I agree with everyone here that having stuff stolen from us feels like such an invasion plus you feel so bad cus IT IS YOUR BIKE! and you use it to go places and workout... Same happened to me when we left our car at the mall door... rushed in to get a new pair of goggles and when we got back ADIOS CAR! I hope you can get a bike like your old one soon.
I will be sending you positive thoughts too emoticon

Aldana

Actually it was stolen in bright daylight at the entrance of a shopping mall... here we have these malls within the city one is right a corner away from where I work. I stopped and chained the bike to a lamppost while I stopped and rushed in because I was looking for a book for my son (I saw that one book I loved as a child was newly issued/printed, I wanted to get that for my boy. This happened almost to the day two years ago stole our bikes right from our door (we live in a closed apartment building on the top/tenth floor...Both bike I loved and grown quite attached to, so loosing them was hard... and Ijust cannot get used to this "new" one...

Having a bike stolen is the worst! I've had other things stolen and was able to say, "I guess they needed it more than me," but when its my bike, its totally different.
And, over my lifetime, I have had 3 bikes stolen. The first two, locks were cut. The last time, I had left the garage door open about 16" because it was so hot. Somebody had to crawl in on their belly to get the bike. . .UGH!
You have my sympathy.

Hi Peony! Glad to see you.

Sounds like you've been having a rough time!!
Ugh. I can't imagine having stuff stolen. That's the worst!!! What an invasion, in so many ways. I wish I could help you out, so I'll send you some emotional support & prayers your way.

Anyway, hoping you can get back into the "swim" of things soon. Looking fwd to seeing you 'round the virtual pool deck...

Hi everyone, I just stopped to let you knoyw that I am alive, and well (for the most part at least LOL, I will not stuff you with my emotional turmoil though)...
Anyway, i am still withouth a pool (even my bike got stolen three weeks ago, I got an other used one since, it is far from what I had though)...
And I have a bit of extra translating work at home, which is rather urgent.

I miss all of you, and also I miss swimming soooooooo terribly.
Hugs for everyone.
