I thought I lost this thread when I went to the States for the summer, but I guess I was the last to post. Here are my very late posts. 7/27=1.2 mi;8/6-8/30=6.6 miles;9/5-9/30=13.9 miles; 10/1-10/31=10.3 miles I guess that also means that I overshot the Amazon River by 30.2 miles-oh well, that's what I get for posting so late!

Sorry, I copied from the line below the posting area. I guess I should have scrolled lower. Gomenasai! My freestyle is the same speed as the younger swimmer's breaststroke at the pool. I do sometimes do breaststroke if I am behind a slower swimmer. Our pool is very small 20M, and there are sometimes 3-4 per lane. We have 2 lap lanes, 2 walk lanes, and an instructional area. The pool is uniformly chest high, except for half of the instructional area where they have dragged 4 of the poolside benches to make a shallower area for kids.

mary, i think a good way of challenging your body might be to "spike" your swimming workouts by adding in high intensity intervals, or by alternating one day of freestyle and one day of breaststroke. breaststroke is much slower than freestyle, but it uses different muscle groups and requires harder work from your body.
oh, btw, i am bine, aldana is our MIA original leader, i took over a while ago to keep the team going, since she wanted to leave open the possibility to return in the future. i'm doing my best to keep this team going! swim on!

Yes Aldana, but I think that my body got used to swimming an hour every night. So, even though I was trying to eat healthy, I would have long plateaus between each pound. When I did the Bootcamp challenge with my daughter, I lost 7K (15 lbs.), but then it tapered to a pound here, a pound there. So, I have signed up for another challenge and have lost 2 lbs this week (but I also swam all 7 days for 55 min-hr.) Summer's coming, so the time output will not be so bad. 6/6-1 mile freestyle 17.1 miles left

mary, i think it's a nice thing that with swimming your speed doesn't really matter as much as that you keep challenging your body. i think an hour (almost) every night is totally awesome!

Well, I am not known for my speed-only the distance!:) I try to swim for an hour every night, since I need to rev my metabolism up to hopefully drop more pounds. At my age, I'm sort of like a VW with my food mileage. 6/4-.9 mile, 6/5-1.0 mile 18.1 miles left

Back from a long hiatus from swimming posting! I've been swimming, but just haven't joined SP Challenges. Last night I swam 1.75 mi. 22.25 mi to go.
It just occurred to me during a long set that I might be swimming more frequently because running is giving me some problems. I've swum since 8th grade and started swimming competitively right off the bat. I love swimming with others - I am a competitive person! I'm shy about asking others to swim with me though.

Mark: your swim to Hawaii definitely looks like a challenge. It's funny because I'm actually moving to Hawaii next month.
I swam only 1500 meters this morning. When Phelps came in I got out(it's too embarassing to swim in front of him, I guess I'm just shy). Although I somehow worked up the courage to approach him before he got in and I got his autograph. That was the highlight of my morning, I must say!

Thanks for the info! I knocked out 27 laps on Sat in a 25 yard pool. By my calculations that is 3/4 of a mile... does that make sense? I'll try again in the morning and see if I can work it out. See yea on the river!

Rach, that's awesome swimming with Phelps! I'd love to be able to swim half as fast as him. I'm not much for asking people for autographs. I'd hate to be famous and people always asking me to sign stuff. That's why I have avoided the limelight...hahaha.
I got in 1.3 miles today. I swam them a little slower since I'm coming off a cold and I want to see how my recovery is from a slower swim. So I'm 10 miles into the Amazon with only 14 to go, and only 194 miles to go in Hawaii.
If anyone is up for real challenge, check out the new Swim Hawaii sparkteam. I set it up because some people were asking me how to join me on this 204 mile virtual swim. I'll be managing everyone's virtual maps for them. Bine, that again for the map and the inspiration!

AMASTAGLIO, i think the best way would be to find out how long your pool is - when you have found a pool with better hours and lap time - and then count your laps. that's what i do, but i know there are lots of people who have trouble keeping track of their laps. if you have difficulties with that, try to keep track for just 10 minutes, or have someone take your time for 10 laps. then if you've swum an hour you could calculate the distance my multiplying the result? it's nice to see you jump in right away, hope you find the pool that suits you!
RACH, i think i would have been VERY intimidated as well. and how do you ask for an autograph in the water?

rach, i have heard that you can swim pretty much through a whole pregnancy, unless you easily get yeast infections. you may have to cut down on your distances, but you could look for a water aerobics course, appearently the movement in the water is a great way to stay fit without putting too much strain on your back.

Way to go! I've been wanting to get back into the pool but just can't make myself, too cold. I have been working out in the gym though.

welcome to this challenge, rachael! you will be swimming across the amazon river (brazil), which is 24 miles/38.6 kilometers wide during the rain season. i guess you have already figured out how everyone tracks, you do your own couting, that is you post your day miles and add them up to a total. you shouldn't be all alone here, glenda and cathy are still on their way, but some of us (including me) seem to be having a somewhat slow start this year. see if you can catch up with them, and have fun!

I'm joining this challenge first. Then I'll venture to the other challenges next. This is totally doable and I'm excited to have something to work towards in the pool.
