I'm liking this challenge. Since my first post about a month ago, I've swum over 12 miles, and this week am working on increasing mileage. I know, kinda a slow start if I am going to make it over the channel. Good luck and happy swimming.

Hi!

I'm new to SP and just coming off *more than* a few years not swimming. I'm now part of a group class (swim drills, technique and workouts) 3X/wk...so much fun!! This week (starting 2/18) I will start keeping track of yardage. Question....currently I don't use the fitness tracker, but I'm up for doing this challenge. Do most people do both..and do I just post responses here with my yardage?

English Channel is a great destination...this is the year of the British... Kate M., the monarchy, the Olympics etc.

Happy swimming!

Swim whenever you like on your own schedule at your own perfect place. No traveling, no crowded pools,no heavy chlorine.Swimming is my main sport,I'm a distance swimmer (1500m in the pool, anything more open water!).I would be happy after entering this wonderful posts which might be nice and interesting ideas from lovely people here.

Great idea, ARCHYGAL
but don't keep your head down all the way. Half way there, you will bump your head on Europe...then turn around.....hope you don't have a headache.

Ok, my English Channel Swim is round trip, with a breathing spell on the mainland of Europe.

So another mile added to my swim. Refreshing at that!!!!

Best to you!!!!

Sorry to tell you but the English Channel is 22 miles wide not 42. If you are swimming from Dover to Calais (Sangatte) that is the narrowest part. Still any exercise is good so just go for it.

I am officially going to jump in the game for this one. I guess I can't back track previous swims...seems like that would be cheating. Tomorrow I head out from the coast of England in search of Europe. Wish me luck!

Update: I did my first mile on Friday. 1.6 km. One down, 41 to go.

Mile 2: Weds, Aug 31. 40 to go.

Also, I don't think I've ever tried konnyaku but I did a google search for "konnyaku recipes" and it came up with a bunch of stuff! Good luck with cooking it - let us know how it turns out. :)

Hope to join you all soon!
Well, I had my MRI yesterday-strange results. Doctor 2 and 3 said that they thought that I had a compression fracture in T12 vertebrae, but I had no pain there. The MRI showed that, in fact, that was true; but they said it was not a new injury and had healed. But the L4/5 turns out to be L3/4/5 vertebrae herniated, L4 ruptured, but he said that since the lower back pain had decreased so much and the numbness, coldness in my left leg had decreased so much, that he felt that the body was repairing itself. I told them that so many people were praying for me. I go back in a month to see if there is more progress. They won't do surgery unless it does not heal. I'm not allowed to swim yet, only walk in water.
On a different note, has anyone a good recipe for konyaku? It is a noodle like food made from a root. It is very high in fiber, has a chewy texture, and is sold in liquid in Asian groceries.

I will warm up and stretch tonight.

I thought we said we were doing the perimeter of Kaui which is 111 miles. We're in training so we need motivation to do a little extra here and there!

I know that I might slow down if I feel I am way ahead of people during challenges... the feeling of finishing alone isn't appealing to me, not in this context!

Do you warm up? Maybe stretching before and warm up may help. I am keeping track on my 2-5-2010 post and I have 5 miles to go. Almost done and ready to start with Hawaii. We did decide on the 33 mile Hawaii swim right.

Also, I seem to tense up when I swim. I think I just need to relax my legs when I swim and overall get in better shape so this doesn't happen as often.

I'm debating on if I should swim tonight. I'm thinking maybe it couldn't hurt if I take it easy?

Oops! I am swimming! Sorry!

Ok, last count I have is 2/16... wow.... sorry to say I haven't been swimming that much but here goes:

2/19 swam 2900m (woo hoo!!)
2/22 swam 950m
2/23 swam 2700m and got the worst cramp I've probably ever had in my calf
emoticon

6.26 miles to go; 10000m to go!

Hey, the math actually works out! A 10k in running is 6.2 miles.

Yesterday I tried stretching it, which was excruciatingly painful, and the boyfriend came over to help stretch and massage. I have been instructed to drink at least 9 glasses of water today. I was too dehydrated during my swim - I had only drank maybe 5 glasses of water that day and did an earlier 3.3 mile run during lunch. Thankfully, my boyfriend helped me figure that puzzle out. Oh, but the pain!! I plan to get in the pool today but I'll have to take it easy.

The lack of water + a difficult set + going for strong and fast flipturns = Shu's very very painfully pulled left calf muscle. Don't let it happen to you, swimmers! It is not worth it! Just because you're surrounded by water doesn't mean you don't need to ingest it! Stay hydrated!!

Hi All: No water time for me this weekend! They had swim meet. How rude! I needed the rest anyway to let my shoulders rest. I have been on ebay looking for a wet suit and that is overwhelming to say the least. Shu I will try on the other teams and see if they can give me some advice. I am looking forward to the swim tomorrow. Have a great week everyone!

OMG- YOU ALL ROCK!!!
I'm finding myself cutting back a bit on the milage as my body's need for rest and the commitments I face each day revdealing that perhaps a mile at a time is not so feasible in reality...I'm a bit jealous at the yardage/meterage you are putting in and AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!!

I've never really done open water swims. I've done quite a few lake swims but they were all contained. I encourage you, Bonnie, to continue pusuing info from those w/more experience than I!

Bonnie, I have never done an open water swim longer than like 500 yards I think so you'd be good to search message boards on SP to see if you can find some seasoned triathletes! Ironman triathletes have to swim 2.4 miles but I bet they have some tricks for ya. Whatever you find out, share with us! I am choosing not to wear a wetsuit. I'll share whatever I find out too. I am going to a "wet run" of 2 miles in June.

Bkinak I think the 111 would be fine. I look forward to the swim. I did a 4950-198 laps in the 25 yard pool = 3 miles so I am hopeful I can do the 3.1 in the bay swim later this spring. I did find my googles hurt around my face. I will check with the trainers or if anyone has any ideas that might help. I need to read tonight but I don't know how long that will last...

I count 1650 as a swimmers mile, but good info to know! I too am training for outdoor swim (my first)and the longer the better. If we keep it short like the 33 miles in Hawaii we can add to it. That would be awesome to stack up several distance swims. I will hunt for a good picture of Hawaii and add to my wall for inspiration.

I have always done 1600m = 1 mile. If I were in a yard pool, I would do 1650yd = 1 mile. The best swimmers in the world are judging themselves by that standard so I really don't think it serves us well to do another 100m or 100yds just to be like "I swam a true mile" when elite swimmers are swimming 1500m for time and calling it a mile!

I like the idea of swimming in Hawaii as the winter is getting unbearably awful in the MidWest but 33 miles doesn't seem long enough. On the other hand, I have only gotten in the pool once this week and it would be very easy to blame the weather or the Olympics but oy! I just need to DO IT and stop with the excuses.

I like the perimeter of Kaui too. What distances motivate you all? I want a longer distance because I am training for a swim so the more distance, the better, for me.

Thanks, Shu. What a quick response! So do you work at # miles w/1500m=1 mile or do you go for #km, 1000m= km?

I've been inspired to check a few distances...just so we know what we are getting into:
The Rio Grande is 1,885 mi/3,000 km. The longest river in Hawaii is Kaukonahua River on Oahu. It is only 33 miles long/53km.
The distance from Florida to Cuba is approximately 90 miles.
The Bahamas are about 50 miles from Florida.
The Cauto River in Cuba is 70m/120km.
The perimeter of the big island of Hawaii is 700 miles.
The perimeter of Kaui is 111 miles.
Just a few ideas. Hopefully it helps define the scale of the next undertaking =-).

Why I love this team is that it's a SUCCESS group - people focused forward, loving people for who they are right now and loving them too much to let them stay that way, always striving for a little better.

Ok Ladies,

This has been bugging me too (the conversion thing). Let's settle this once and for all.

The swimmer's mile is a 1500m or 1650yd swim according to USA Swimming.

From a triathlete forum:
"I'm 99% sure it's because 1.5k is the typical international length "mile" which is 1640 yards - close to the 1650......

Just like when I was in high school track. The 400 meter track was 440 yards. So we called the races the 4-40, 8-80, etc.....

When training, I always consider 1650 (33 laps) is a mile."

Bkinak, you are correct when you say 1760yds is a mile. However, for counting lap swimming purposes, a 1650yd swim is a mile. I swim in a meter pool and 1600m is the ruler that I use for a mile.

Rio in Mexico sounds delightful. I say we go with it. :) We can wait a few days if we want consensus.

I made my mile!!!
OK, let me clarify that I'm questioning the logic behind USA swimming. I've been around pools a fair bit and feel I am brainwashed to believe that a mile is 1650 yards. (A feat that is quite gymnastic to hit in a 20 yard pool by the way!) I did 1660.
So here I am, a homeschooling mom, talking about measuring distance just 4 hours later...and lo and behold...the mile is 1760 yards!!! Imagine my best Lucy voice from Charlie Brown/Peanuts, "Call my congressman! I want restitution!!!"

So what do we aim for in our swimming?

I think I have 6 miles down...but I'm really not sure!

Oh...and if you want, I'll put some landmarks in for the swim down the amazon and regale you with stories of the journey as I read =-). Let me know how gory I can get on some of the grosser parts (the Amazon is not a swimmer friendly river all the way apparently)

Otherwise the Rio in Mexico sounds delightful! I guess we could swim the distance from where we are to Hawaii... or we could cover the distance around the largest Island.

Why I love this team is that it's a SUCCESS group - people focused forward, loving people for who they are right now and loving them too much to let them stay that way, always striving for a little better.

Wow wow wow! 1650 today! You are awesome, Bawnee!!

Let's go international and choose a swim that is outside of the U.S. I am sick of snow and would love to swim somewhere warm and tropical!

I didn't get a swim in today but I will swim tomorrow, come heck or high water (let's hope for the water because we're swimmers, aren't we!).

Hello everyone! I swam 1650 today and have been thinking about 3.1 open swim this spring. The thing is I use fins and if the race is sanctioned I can't use them. What a challenge it will be to make the switch. I will start tomorrow. Shu 10 miles to go emoticon the end is in sight. Do we want to go stateside or outside of these wonderful United States for the next challenge? Berna my grandsons are 6 and 12 years old and we have a life guard. The boys love the water and have fun. I watch them when I swim. I feel they are very safe.

Oh my, for some reason I have not been getting emails saying that there is activity in this message board! Sorry for not being here! I will try to be more active in checking myself and not relying on emails.

I swam 1800m on 2/12 and 1800m on 2/13.

I swam 1700m yesterday and it was a toughie. It is hard to motivate yourself when it is just yourself! The high school boys team was swimming yesterday so that was a good motivation.

I am really looking to ramp up my training so that I get a 2 mile distance swim in every week since I am training for a 2 mile open water in June and a 3 mile open water in July. I am lacking motivation and time... more motivation than anything. We need to start another challenge - I think I am reluctant about reaching the shore by myself, even though I kinda started this challenge alone!

10.35mi to go; 16550m to go!

Just Do It.

Bawnee you are AMAZING!!! How old are your grandkids that they were interested and safe while you swam a mile - then went for a three mile walk? YOU ROCK!!!

I completely understand the lead arms. This weekend I was skiing and it felt like I have lead legs!

Testing the waters tomorrow...
Cheers,
Berna

Hello everyone with webbed feet! I had a wonderful day, I set up Skype to visit with the grankids on the west coast and spent 1 1/2 on the web with the kids. Took the gransons to the pool and I swam 1 mile 1650 and then we walked 3 miles. So I am done for the day. I wanted to say hi and check in Good job swimmers!

Wow...great action! Nice to meet you Ceeme2.

I made it to the pool twice. I actually got in 1600 on tues...hope to make it 1650 next week (I believe a full mile is 1650 yards)... and last night was 1400. Haven't decided yet if I'll get back tonight or just start the weekend early. Alot of that depends on how my kids do 'til then. =-)

I'm up to 5miles, 1250 yards done so far.

Had a great swim yesterday. Swam a continuous warmup and even was 2nd for part of the workout. I really liked having someone swimming behind me, because I don't always push myself. Sometimes just going for me is good enough.
Totals for yesterday....
1.5 miles.

That means- 38.2 - 1.5 = 36.7 miles to go.

I am still very behind so I might do this one and still follow everyone when you go to the next challenge.

(for my notes so I don't have to go to the end of the board... 1760yd = 1 mile)

Thank you Shucg and Bawnee. I slept right until I got up. I was going to see if I walked early to do some Yoga stretches. I think I just needed the extra sleep this week. I have been dragging, but then again, no exercise is also part of the cause.
Bawnee- Food Plateus are so frustrating. Keep at it, you'll get through. Once I got stuck and ended up busting through by eating, dinner for breakfast, breakfast for lunch and lunch for dinner for a few days. Don't know why it jump started me, but it worked :-)
Hope everyone's having a great day.

Yay! Ceemee2 you are back, so glad to see you and you were missed! I have started walking in the early am swimming and yoga and the scale is not moving so Hubby and I are counting and measuring everything...He is great not the food police at all. I have battled the food police in my head before! I think I'm alittle nuts (almonds)

Hi everyone,
This board has been hopping. I see some new faces-- Welcome. I can't believe that I can finally get back into the pool today. I was all ready to go and then cancelled on Tuesday due to a snow storm. It will be hard getting back in after a few weeks off.
I faced the scale also for the first time in weeks and was glad to see that I haven't added any weight, so at least my eating plans held.
I plan on swimming tonight and then start my walking program at work next week since I no longer have Yoga class :-( Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to reading all the wonderful news that I missed.

Wow, count me impressed! Way to go! You're combining three great things: the water, a fitness class, and toning!

You're motivating me to do a water fitness class soon! I remember my abs being sore the next day. Never a bad thing, in my opinion.

Thanks Shu, our instructor has us using weighted dumbbells so I use that as part of my weights for toning. Cool huh!

Wow, Bawnee, you are racking up fitness minutes for sure!!

Great job with the exercise and swimming and water fitness classes. Those classes are tough, especially if you only rely on the floating dumbbells and forgo the belt!

Due to a SuperBowl party yesterday, I didn't have time to get a swim in!
emoticon
But I did swim 1000m on Friday (it was a rushed workout, after a spin class!), and I don't think I counted what I did last Tuesday. I hardly got in the pool last week!! Eeep! No wonder I was grumpy. It's tough because I am training for two BIG events: the 3-mile swim and a half-marathon. Balancing training between the two is tricky.

I swam 1.625 miles last week (better than nothing, right?).

16.875 mi to go; 27000m to go!

Not much for the weekend. My daughter has girl scouts and a bday sleepover. My son has the sniffles and is putting a car together for the boy scouts pinewood derby.

Managed another 1280 yesterday. Feeling like I'm getting some of my groove back at least!

Cheers,
Berna

Deevanna Welcome!!! We love to swim and we are glad you have joined us!
Shu thanks for the explaination! I haven't swam in competition for a long time so not sure how it was set up. I sure hope your are feeling better, but look at you in the water and work too. Take care and get some rest.
Bkinak had a fast weekend spent time with the daughter mother/daughter bonding aka shopping and lunch. The men in the family went to the senior game in Mobile and froze. WE are so smart!
I swam Monday 1.3 and today 1.5miles so I am pumped and happy its done. I have been praying while I swim. I love that time.

Hey Shu, Sorry to hear about another somewhat lousy feeling swim. Are you feeling any better?

Bawnee- what have you been up to this weekend?

Made it to the pool today. Something like another 1200 yards. I lost track somewhere between convincing my son that he can NOT be sucked into the circulation intake and making amends for my daughter trying to swim with her belly on a kickboard only to have it shoot across the lane line and into someone's snorkel...ahhhh the joys of parenthood!

3 miles, 1620 yards done. about 38 miles to go.

BKINAK, those sound like excellent reads. I look forward to hearing how each book progresses. How inspiring, to have the knowledge that anything is possible, even the seemingly impossible!

BAWNEE, in Masters Swimming, you are in heats according to your seed time. For example, if I sign up for an event, say, the 200m breast, I will put my estimated time (I think I put 3:50). Then I will be assigned to a heat with other people who put times close to mine. It goes from slowest heats to fastest. So no one in my age group swam in my events or heats, but I swam with other people (men and women sometimes, if it is a small heat- they call those "mixed") who put times similar to mine. I did the triathlon on Friday, swam 2.09 miles on Saturday, and did the meet on Sunday.

This morning I swam 1600 slow meters with a really upset stomach. I crawled out of the pool this morning and went to work and didn't feel like eating breakfast. I made myself, though, since I knew I needed to.

Wow, great job, Bkinak, swimming with your kid! It must be hard getting laps in but I am proud of you for being a great role model to your kid.

Hugs,
Shu
