Wow, count me impressed! Way to go! You're combining three great things: the water, a fitness class, and toning!
You're motivating me to do a water fitness class soon! I remember my abs being sore the next day. Never a bad thing, in my opinion.
I've come too far to give up now.

Thanks Shu, our instructor has us using weighted dumbbells so I use that as part of my weights for toning. Cool huh!

Wow, Bawnee, you are racking up fitness minutes for sure!!
Great job with the exercise and swimming and water fitness classes. Those classes are tough, especially if you only rely on the floating dumbbells and forgo the belt!

Due to a SuperBowl party yesterday, I didn't have time to get a swim in! But I did swim 1000m on Friday (it was a rushed workout, after a spin class!), and I don't think I counted what I did last Tuesday. I hardly got in the pool last week!! Eeep! No wonder I was grumpy. It's tough because I am training for two BIG events: the 3-mile swim and a half-marathon. Balancing training between the two is tricky.
I swam 1.625 miles last week (better than nothing, right?).
16.875 mi to go; 27000m to go!
Deevanna! We are really excited to have you join our pool of friends.

Not much for the weekend. My daughter has girl scouts and a bday sleepover. My son has the sniffles and is putting a car together for the boy scouts pinewood derby.
Managed another 1280 yesterday. Feeling like I'm getting some of my groove back at least!
Cheers, Berna

Deevanna Welcome!!! We love to swim and we are glad you have joined us! Shu thanks for the explaination! I haven't swam in competition for a long time so not sure how it was set up. I sure hope your are feeling better, but look at you in the water and work too. Take care and get some rest. Bkinak had a fast weekend spent time with the daughter mother/daughter bonding aka shopping and lunch. The men in the family went to the senior game in Mobile and froze. WE are so smart! I swam Monday 1.3 and today 1.5miles so I am pumped and happy its done. I have been praying while I swim. I love that time.

Hey Shu, Sorry to hear about another somewhat lousy feeling swim. Are you feeling any better?
Bawnee- what have you been up to this weekend?
Made it to the pool today. Something like another 1200 yards. I lost track somewhere between convincing my son that he can NOT be sucked into the circulation intake and making amends for my daughter trying to swim with her belly on a kickboard only to have it shoot across the lane line and into someone's snorkel...ahhhh the joys of parenthood!
3 miles, 1620 yards done. about 38 miles to go.

BKINAK, those sound like excellent reads. I look forward to hearing how each book progresses. How inspiring, to have the knowledge that anything is possible, even the seemingly impossible!
BAWNEE, in Masters Swimming, you are in heats according to your seed time. For example, if I sign up for an event, say, the 200m breast, I will put my estimated time (I think I put 3:50). Then I will be assigned to a heat with other people who put times close to mine. It goes from slowest heats to fastest. So no one in my age group swam in my events or heats, but I swam with other people (men and women sometimes, if it is a small heat- they call those "mixed") who put times similar to mine. I did the triathlon on Friday, swam 2.09 miles on Saturday, and did the meet on Sunday.
This morning I swam 1600 slow meters with a really upset stomach. I crawled out of the pool this morning and went to work and didn't feel like eating breakfast. I made myself, though, since I knew I needed to.
Wow, great job, Bkinak, swimming with your kid! It must be hard getting laps in but I am proud of you for being a great role model to your kid.
Hugs, Shu

Get ahold of this......!!!! I was at the bookstore tonight and wound up getting "The Crossing" by Kathy Watson which is a biography of the first man to swim the English Channel.
Then....I found "The Man Who Swam the Amazon." ALL 3274 miles!!!!! It is by Martin Strel adn Matthew Mohlke. It goes basically mile by mile along his journey. I figure I could try to read along as I "travel" if I try to "swim" the Amazon! It's also long enough to last a few years! Will be interesting to see the geography of a trip that long.
THEN...I FOUND THIS: "SWIMMING TO ANTARCTICA" That's right. This is by Lynne Cox. AUTOBIOGRAPHY of a girl who swam the REAL English Channel at 16 years old! She's also swum THE BERING STRAIGHT, and THE STRAIGHT OF MAGELLAN!!!!!
Had to buy all three. Then I HAD TO TELL YOU!!!!!!

Go Girls! Shu I'm so sorry you missed that plane. GREAT RECOVERY!! Who swims your heat with you if you are the only lady in your age group? Bummer on the soda. I'll double check the postings, was that your triathalon day?
Keep up that GREAT work Bawnee! You guys are going to smoke me home from the English Channel. Maybe we should set a longer trip? Yukon River? Iditarod? What's big where y'all are?
I made it to the pool Friday as planned. It is the time I get to swim with my son. He's 7 for one more week. I didn't make 1200, but 1000 yds seems good when every 40 yard lap ends with him pouncing on me, tickling me, or cheering for me to go faster (so we can get done with the work part sooner).
Did you girls have a great weekend? -Berna
oh...that's 2 miles, 420 yards in..just short of 40 miles to go!

The meet went well. It was a small meet. I was the only female in my age group, so I automatically won all my events, lol. I swam 200 breast, 200 free, 50 breast, 100 free, and 500 free. Ok times, but I was just happy to be swimming and at a meet. I love that competition feel.
I swam an 1850 (events + warm up and cool downs)
18.5 miles to go; 29600m to go!
It was great to be in the pool today.

Word to the wise - a couple sips of Pepsi Throwback almost threw me out of the pool today... I never drink soda but today before heading out the door, I thought that a little caffeine could give my workout a little oomph. Little did I know, that 'oomph' gave me a headache and made me sick to my stomach. I almost got out of the pool today but I kept hydrating and trucking on. I bargained with myself, saying "just 10 more minutes and then see how you feel" and "you've been wanting to do this 3350 all week, now's the time to finish it, you don't want to have to try to do this another time" and "you don't have to be fast, just try and finish." I even told myself, the 3350 or 1 PM, whichever comes first. 1 PM came first but by that time I had 3x50s left and they were kickboard so I just did it! I had a celebratory sandwich (peanut butter and pumpkin butter - mmm!) after my workout.
19.66 miles to go; 31450m to go!
I was supposed to be in Atlanta this weekend, but missed my flight and opted not to pay the $150 for the transfer fee for a flight 24 hours later. (My return flight would've been 24 hours after I arrived in Atlanta on Saturday night). I miss my family (mom, dad, brothers) but all's well that ends well. I got the swim in today; I got to clean my room; I got to do laundry; I get to swim in a meet tomorrow (last year we actually won a trophy in that meet); all good stuff.
I've come too far to give up now.

Bawnee, Gu and Sport Beans are ... like fruit snacks, except made for Athletes. Triathletes like to eat them to keep them replenished between events. I tried Gu chomps for the first time and it was actually ok. A bit... gooey. Lol.

Congrats on the 1.5mile Bawnee. Good luck with the yoga. I really like neck circles, turning the head towards one shoulder and "nodding" yes - then the other side, and holding one ear towards a shoulder on the same side, then switch sides. Oh- and make sure you try to keep shoulders back and down. Mine tend to go up and forward (a no-no) when I don't think about it.
I have two kids. My daughter is 10. My son is 8. I made another 1200 yards tonight and hope to swim the same workout tomorrow.
'night!

Shu and Berna hi! I made 2500 my mile and half today. Shu what is Gu and Sport Beans? Berna I started swimming after a lung surgery 2 years ago but was on swim team in the 70's I have 3 kids and (8) grandkids.. I love keeping in touch with swimmers this is great. I have walked alot of races in Spokane WA but have not here in Florida. Berna will start with Yoga tonight. Thanks if I have questions I will let you know. My neck is tight and I don't alternate breathing so I thought I would try Yoga for that too!

I've never tried it before but I hear Sport Beans are good too. I'm not a huge fan of the bike to be honest... During tris, it is the weakest part. I am almost 26 (my birthday is next Thursday) and I think I am a little afraid of settling down, getting married and having kids. You give me hope because you have kids and still swim a mile or more most days. I'll let SP know via blog post how it went!

Bawnee- I am SO inspired! How long have you been swimming now? I used to be a yoga instructor, so if you have any questions I'll do my best to help =-).
Go SHU! Congrats on the wrist. Let us know how the 3350 goes. You and I can agree on a great way to spend a vacation day! Oh for my life before kids.... I used to do personal triathalons ALL THE TIME!!! Might consider throwing in a banana, apple and some carrots =-). Enjoy your massage and let me know how you like the Gu. I was overloaded with it when we did a 150 bike ride and don't understand that particula love affair of some athletes .
Cheering for you all, Berna

Wrist is not even remotely an issue today. Yesterday I had trouble turning knobs and opening jars! Weird. I swam 2250m this morning. It was tough to get to the pool but I have a buddy that I meet every Tues and Thurs morning. I knew she would be there. Oh, the power of a workout partner! She said she wouldn't be there this morning either if it weren't for me too.
21.75 miles to go; 34800m to go!
My goal this week was to get in the pool 4 times last week. My goal last week was too ambitious and I gave up because it was a really tough week, personally and work-life wise. Tomorrow I have the day off (took a vacation day) and I am planning on doing the Masters work out. It is .... (drumroll please)... a 3350. Seriously!!! I think I can do it. I have no excuses tomorrow.
I am doing a personal triathlon tomorrow. That's right. You heard me. On my day off, I am waking up at 5:15, taking a spin class at 5:45, running two easy miles after that, then doing the swim workout (the 3350m one). I think I'll pack some Gu since I have it and have never tried it. Then I am getting a massage!! I'll pack a PBJ to eat after the swim... I'll need something to nourish me after all of that!
Wish me luck! Shu

Bkinak welcome to our small but powerful group! We are making a difference. When I started back swimming I could not make it 1 lap of the pool so hang in there it will happen. I was in the pool today 45 min. 1.3 swimplan gave me 750 yds Whatever! So I did the plan and with the rest in the workout I do work harder but wanted my mile+ in. I also put in 60 min water aeorbics I love it because it helps with the laps. I picked up a yoga book today and will try it. Hope your wrist is better soon Shu but keep moving! The water is what the doctor ordered! Ceeme2 I am hoping you will be back soon!

Good for you! Who needs luck when you have a plan?
Hope the wrist feels well soon. Maybe you could try some yoga poses where you stand, sit, or recline without bothering it. Wouldn't want you to lose gained flexibility!

I am notorious for miscounting laps so I always swim more than I had planned. Today, swimplan.com gave me a 1900m set but I must've written it down wrong so I swam a 1600m today. Wow, a mile sure feels great, especially in the middle of the day.
23.16 miles to go; 37050m to go!
My big goal is to swim a 3350 on Friday. I took a day off that day, just because I felt I needed to. I have officially signed up and paid for the 3-mile swim in Vermont. A coworker of mine retired to VT and he and his wife have agreed to let me stay at their house and they are going to be my support crew! (you have to bring your own canoe with supplies, floatation devices and cell phone).

Bawnee, nothing like getting back in the pool after partying for a while ;)
BKINAK, you are totally, totally welcome in our group. We are so glad to have you swim with us. Your pool does sound fantastic. Under a mall, you say? Oh boy, that's temptation if you ask me! Soooo cool about the saline water. I could use a saline pool right now, lol! Good job getting to 1200 yards. That is awesome. Seriously, I remember when a 500 was daunting. Now I am swimming 1600m regularly most days, trying to get more in when I can.
Going to go for a mile or more during lunch today. Wish me luck! I gave blood on Monday so I am trying to take it easy on the exercise front... maybe that's not a good excuse
My wrist is aching like crazy so no yoga since yoga involves lotsa wrist action. Swim it is! It'll be great to get in the water during my lunch break.
Love, Shu

Hello! I ADORE this challenge! Hi, my name is Berna. I live in Alaska. I have been with SP for just two weeks, but when I saw this challenge my swimming took a flying leap! I was just trying to get in 500 while my kids played. Then I saw swimplan and up to a mile so now I'm swimming 1200 yds on my way to a mile at a time.
So far, 2 miles, 1200 yards down.
Oh, and I swim at a pool that is only 20 yards long under our biggest mall. The price is right, the hours are FANTASTIC and the water is saline =-).

I did not swim today. I volunteer at food bank/thrift store and run all day long. I am glad to see you are back in the pool Shu. Sorry to hear about the shoulders I guess maybe some rub or something warm. Mine hurt sometimes but it does go away. I will swim tomorrow I will try for mile and 3rd or maybe half we shall see if I have the time in the pool. My hubby wants to get out of the gym. I am feeling the difference and I have more energy. Thats great. I love how I feel when I am in the water its freedom. Keep the party low key you party animal.

1/26: I swam a mile this morning. My shoulders are SO sore from the lifting yesterday. I gave blood last night successfully, yay! So I decided a nice and easy mile this morning. It sure was difficult because my shoulders ached and it was cold & snowy out! But I feel great now.
24.16 miles to go; 38650m to go!
You all are doing wonderful. Great job, Bawnee, on your 1.3 miles. Woo hoo! I bet you're feeling the difference too. There is nothing like getting in the water, I tell ya.
This morning, the girls and I tread water for a couple minutes at the very end of the swim and we called it a swim party, hehe. My quad started to cramp so I guess I was the party pooper! Lol.

I was all set to swim after work today, but I am giving blood at 5:15! We'll see if I can get a quick mile in but we'll see.
Ceeme2, great job with the 1.36. Swimming on Saturday! That's awesome!
I didn't swim this entire weekend. Interviews, volunteering, and traveling. Ugh. I am getting cranky without my pool time!
Keep up the great work everyone, and wish me luck today.

Bawnee, look at you go! You are great!
Good goal to have. I think I will follow suit and have a goal - take a minute to breathe when I am feeling emotional and want to eat.
Keep on swimmin', Shu P.S. No swim for me yesterday or today - busy with interviews for grad school and the pool was closed before the interviews were done. Oh well, I will try to get a swim in tomorrow!

You guys are doing great as well! Unfortuately, I looked at my schedule for next week and I won't be able to get in any pool time. Work commitments each night. In lieu of that I am planning on attending 2 Yoga classes, 1 hour of volleyball and walk at least 3 miles. I am looking forward to tomorrow's extra pratice. I am so glad I found you guys. Your support and enthusiam is so encouraging.

1/21/10: I actually swam 50 m more than I thought! I'll just add that total to this morning's swim.
Was tough getting out of bed but I made a pact with Molly to swim Tues and Thurs mornings at 6:30! I pulled myself out of bed (so warm and comfy) and almost slipped on the ice outside of my door! I got there... and Molly wasn't there. Oh well. I was 500m in and she showed up, saying "I wouldn't be here if we hadn't said we'd do this!" Looks like the spark is spreading :):)
Ok, I swam 1800m + 50m from the other day, so:
25.16 miles to go; 40250m to go!
I love how we are bonding in this team, and how we are planning another swim already! Big ditto on the warmer water swim... it is COLD in the MidWest! (I'm on the Indiana/Ohio border!)
Love that swimming!!
I've come too far to give up now.

That's what I like the best about swimming is the quiet! I don't have a lot of time where there is or can be quiet. No computer, cell phone or other people. It's a great time to get into my own head and see what's going on up there today.

Thank you everyone for your warm welcomes and encouragement. I really liked counting my laps in yesterday's pratice. It kept me motivated not to skip one. I was going to use my weight loss or the next meet as a goal, but this one, I can see the yardage and know how far I am going. I am already packed for tomorrow's pratice. Now if only I can get myself walking again. I was walking cross country using mapmywalk at one time. This kind of reminds me of that.
