Good to hear from you. I have not been in the pool since end of May so I am trying to walk etc. Keep the races going. Missed hearing from ya!

I did the 3.19 bayswim from Pensacola to Gulf Breeze. I finished 31 overall and 1st in the womens fin division. I was so pleased. My goal was to finish. My time was 1:34.16 Hope you all are doing fine. I will be traveling and away from the water. I hope to get water time but will be measured in minutes. Bonnie

Focus on the swim and enjoy the peace you get. I am sorry you had to quit your job. I am pulling for you getting through graduate school. You go girl! Keep up all your good work and forget about the guard.
I am hoping we get to do our swim. We have the oil in the area and so we are just waiting to see. We are all upset in the area because of the oil. Race managers say we may have to move the race.

Hey Bonnie,

Running is fine, probably need to ease off of it a little since I ran 9.5 yesterday and the heel/ankle started to hurt.

I've not been swimming very much. I quit my job and not being on a schedule kills my work ethic. The last time I was in a pool (last Friday), I had a pretty good swim. The manager of the life guards commented to me, upon finishing my swim, that it must be nice to be able to swim all day, whenever I want. I thought it was really rude of her to assume I have all the time in the world since I have quit my job and am starting graduate school. The pool is only open during select hours of the day so it is impossible to swim "any time I want" unless I break into the pool!

I hate to say it, but sometimes I let people take away my joy.

And I have a really hard time being motivated to get back into the pool knowing she'll be thinking those things about me! I wish I didn't care what she thought.

Well, I won't tally up my mileage at the moment since I don't have that on hand, but I am going to swim. Who cares what she thinks... Of course, she wouldn't dream of saying it to the MEN who swim way more than I do. I guess she decided to mouth off to someone who doesn't threaten her job security.

Just Do It.

And yes: Set a time goal, and run one minute, then walk one minute until you're done. That's the way to do it.

I usually have a distance goal and do the ratio (3:1 for me since I've been working up to it) until I am done with the distance. For a beginner runner, I would do as you'd originally thought: set a time goal and work toward increasing your time. Don't worry about the distance.

As you get farther into your workout and longer in distance, you may lessen or eliminate the walk breaks if you are feeling fine. The key is: early and often.

Good luck! And have fun in the Northwest. I am jealous!

Just Do It.

Hey: Thanks I am still thinking about it, and wanted to do the slow approach. I need to have a routine for the summer. We travel to the northwest and I don't swim so this could be the way to go. I will let you know... just so that I understand you set amount of time to run say 15 min. and run 1 min walk 1 min is that the process?

Have you made any decisions about the running? I think if you approached it slowly and steadily, it can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for you.

Right now I am doing a ratio. Run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute. If you're new to running, I would suggest a 1:1 ratio, run:walk. Trust me - I've tried running straight through 10-12 mile runs before - this way actually makes you feel great at the end of the run. One of the perks is that you don't lose much time by doing it this way. I love the mental and physical break, too. I think about my stride and my footing and my form during the walk breaks so when I do run, it's quality.

Didn't get in the pool today but tomorrow I will!

3/28: swam a total of about 1400m for the Masters Swim Meet. It was a blast! Swam the 1000y free, 100 free, 50 free and 100 IM.

I volunteer with an org called Girls Inc, encouraging girls to be strong, smart, and bold. I wish I could volunteer more than once a week!

14.62 miles down! And I think I did the math wrong... 111 - 13.74 is 97.26 for my last post.

Bonnie, how long does it take you to swim a mile? I am getting totally smoked by you!

You are totally awesome! Training for 2 events, working full time and not sleeping. Whew that's a lot to handle. I will get up at 4:30 tomorrow to swim with the masters. This is tough for me because I think I should be able to stay up with those younger people. I have to focus and swim my own race. Its a process. I know what you mean about really enjoying the swim. I need to move more and I like doing all that but the days goes by so fast. I like to spend time here checking this out and staying motivated too! Get some rest.

Bonnie,

I am training for two events (running and swimming) but if I had it my way, I would only train for the swim. Running in my life is a social thing. I run to catch up with people (we have a running group) or I run so I have something to talk about when I see other runners! (They just don't understand us swimmers). I'm training for a half marathon that I'm doing with relatives. Running is a great way to get and stay in shape, as well. Really cannot beat the convenience of running, either. It's also how I lost most of my weight (but then again, I dieted my way to that weight and it came back when I was injured and emotionally/spiritually void). Now I'm working on being healthy/skinny in my mind as well as my body. It has to be a whole approach, and it has to be out of kindness and love toward self.

I had a revelation the other day while swimming: burning calories feel good. It's true. I previously would exercise so I wouldn't put on weight but it wasn't that enjoyable. It was like a chore. Now, I feel like it is a necessity but something that I deserve as well. I deserve to feel good about myself, and endorphins are the way to go!

I swam a 1650m (what I call a maintenance mile) today. It was tough to wake up (still scraping ice off the windshield) but boy was I glad I did! I finished the mile and had to get a move on or I'd be late to work... I wish I had more time to swim.

8.99 miles down, 102.01 miles to go!

I actually don't sleep well at night due to my not being able to relax right away. With my tight schedule and stressful job, I don't get enough sleep, or quality sleep for that matter. Just gotta keep on keepin' on!

Shu

I want to lose the rest of the weight and I am thinking I need to bump it up some and just thinking so far I may just get on the treadmill and see how that goes. I am getting to the pool almost everyday. I was swimming mwf and now have practice on Tues Thurs and Sat so lots of pool time. I went back to my older fins and no blisters so will not have to buy water socks. I am in awe of you running and swimming. Wow you have to sleep good at night. How is everybody else doing??

I run too. Are you thinking about it for convenience purposes, like when the pool is closed but you still want to get a workout in? SP is a biiiiggg fan of running. I love runnersworld.com and runningtimes.com. Good articles, especially for the newbies.

Wow, Bonnie, you are really putting in the miles in the pool. I see that you're in there almost every day. Do you want to run and swim in the same day? I'm doing that today since I am training for a half marathon as well.

I'm interested to see what kind of socks you buy for fins. I never use fins but in case I want to, I'd like to not get blisters!

Bonnie,

emoticon that you found an event with fins! Phenomenal.

3/9/10 swam 2400m! (Was supposed to swim 2800m but got in the pool late, plus I was feeling really stomach sick).

3.4 miles down, 107.6 miles to go!

Hi Shu There is a fin division. I was so excited. However, my feet are not use to the distance and will have to buy water socks so I don't get the blisters. I found a wet suit on Ebay farmer type sleeveless. I trained this am @ 5:30am I dont have 5:am on my clock anymore so it was different getting myself to practice. We will start with weight training on Thursday. Talk to you soon

Bonnie, is the race you're training for allowing you to wear fins, or are you training without them now?

I have just started so you can put up your pictures by your computer and add up the miles as we accumulate them. Its just one mile at a time in the pool or 2 or 3 or whatever you can do...Hop on board

I'm so jealous!! That must have been a wonderful experience. Hawaii is my dream vacation, and swimming in those waters would be wonderful!
