I am going to start this challenge (I am from Ontario) and try to finish by the end of February!!!! That means 6km per week for me. I think I can do that if I push myself hard.

wow, that will be quite a crowd, then! if you don't hear from them you might still want to show up in case someone "chickens out"? i think the distances sound perfect for a first tri. i haven't started running yet, but i think that is about what i would aim for at a first try. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that you will get in!

Bine, I'm wait listed to do a "sprint" triathlon in April. 1000 yard swim, 20K Bike, and 5K run. The race is so popular that it filled up in 12 hours. I was out of town that day so by the time I got to sign up it was full. I'll know by the end of March if I got in or not. I'll let you know.
Got a mile in after spinning class yesterday. 17.1 miles to go. Rebecca

cherith, you don't have to leave the team because you are not able to swim at the moment. as you can see we have a lot of "inactive members", but as long as somebody is always in the water i think this is fine. i'm having a "dry" phase at the moment too, but i'm sure i'll be back in the water by spring the latest. please don't feel you have to leave, you can just jump in any time you get the option!

Bine, I see myself as into minimalism and online is no less so. I don't have the money to spend on swimming at present and so I decided to leave the group for now. But be forewarned, as soon as I either pay to swim for the semester at the college or the pool opens here at the apartment complex, I will be back! Bine, the Mediterranean swim across the straight in Greece sounds delightful. See you soon. Cherith

helen! it's great to see you here! the way you're going at it you'll probably be finished before me, lol! i think i'll have to think of a new challenge soon. cherith brought up the idea of swimming the mediterranean, and i found a nice little stretch across a greek bay that seems to be a popular long-distance swim.
cherith, i have similar money issues. i also had minor skin surgery that keeps me out of the water, but i hope to be back soon. and i'm always checking in on y'all!

Bine, this pool, and another I Lifeguarded at are significantly longer but with ....oh, what do you call them.... bulkheads in between. This pool, like the other, has two bulkheads. The pool is divided into two Olympic-sized pools.
Frankly, when we guarded on the lake we used to take swims straight out, or take the kayaks out. I've been out in the real lake farther than my paltry 2+ miles. But I do love it. It's my lake. Farther west from our beach was Braddock's Bay, a stop-over for migrations of geese. Very picturesque.
With regards to the temperatures- we opened for weekends in May and laid the lane lines. The water was in the low 50-degree range. The short-sleeved/short wet suits helped little.
I walked to/from our library today, 4.65 miles total. Figure I won't be able to swim again until later in the week (if I don't go tomorrow). Peace.

yes cherith, 25 yards per length, 50 per lap sounds reasonable. a 75 yards long pool i've never seen, that would be longer than an olympic-size pool! mine is 25 meters long, with is half olympic size and about the same as 25 yards (27.34 yards to be exact). you had a great start, have fun with the lake!

I checked on things today. The marked distances are feet so our length is 75' or 25 yds., 50 yd. laps. Today I swam
1/17- 60 laps x 50 yds.= 1.70 miles (65 min)
Total= 2.84 miles

OMIGOSH I don't know if this can possibly be accurate. I swam 60 minutes today, first time in this pool. My old pools were 50 yards, and 35 laps=1 mile. I assumed that was the case here and in 60 minutes, swam 40 laps. Then I noticed he bulkhead was set at 75 yds. That means I swam.
1/16- 6000 yd = 3.41 miles.
I'm skeptical. I'm not that good. But for now I'll take it. At that rate, I'll be across Lake Ontario in no time! OTOH, if the markings on the side of the pool were in feet, the 75' translates to 25 yds. for a 50 yd. lap, meaning I swam
2000 yd = 1.14 miles. This sounds more logical to me.
Bine, what say ye? Would a pool be marked in feet or yards?
LOL! Then it was out into our 0 degree weather. brrrrr.....

Let's see... on Monday I swam 4,800yds and on Thursday I swam 4,100yds so that's...
Bine, I haven't gotten to a pool yet. Lots of research done! The pool was closed on Friday due to a swim meet. I did a little research and found out that nearby SUNY Brockport College offers memberships to community members but one can swim for a nominal fee ($5 for adults) during open swim hours. As I work out at the high school workout room on M-Th, I'm planning to swim at least a few days of F-Sun. Sounds like a plan to me.

cherith, we haven't started a new challenge yet, but all of the challenges here are ongoing challenges. it's just a matter of finding one that isn't completely deserted or finding someone to start with you - it's always nicer to swim "with" someone, so you aren't completely swimming and tracking alone. i am pondering on a santa barbara channel swim, and there is also a challenge to cross the amazon river close to it's mouth, i think it's 24 miles, and there is someone swimming there at the moment. i'll think about the mediterranean - there must be a nice strait between some lovely greek islands somewhere!
hope you had a great swim last night!

I'm hoping to "dive into" this challenge tonight before you are all done with it! Have you started another yet? I was wondering what in heaven's name made it such a challenge to swim Lake Ontario for me, since it's home and I swam it daily several summers when I Lifeguarded at a beach here. Let me tell you ladies...and gentlemen (?).....IT IS COLD!!! When we would begin work for the year, setting up lines and such, we wore half wetsuits, and would still freeze in water in the low 50 degrees. Even mid-summer it was often frigid.
I was thinking about what exciting body of water I would really like to "swim," if it's not too wide (check Google Earth?) What could be more tropical, or sexy, than the Mediterranean? Just a thought.... Have a good weekend all! I am swimming tonight, in a nearby town. Peace.

JAYMATTER, LEELEE0405, ALIAGOGO and SHUCG1004 have finished the lake ontario and have moved on to the amazon, i think all the other's have stopped posting here ... there are at least 2 more on the english channel swim. there are still a few left of our little team, but it's kinda quiet. what worries me a little is that our team leader is completely MIA. if we want to keep something up here with new challenges and things going on we might want to ask her if she could maybe use the help of a co-leader ... or maybe she wants to pass on the team to someone else. but i don't want to rush it - maybe she just needs a little spark break.
you dream of "cool days" in the eighties - i woke up to 40 this morning. not funny! i'm freezing my butt off biking to work. enjoy the fall, shannon!

I did 2800 yards= 1.59 miles. Total 8.52. Less than 20 miles to go!!! You are so good about going to the pool! Bummer about having only certain times to go. I leave my pool bag in my car. (lots of melted swim caps in the summer) It is just so hard for me to will myself to the pool. Once I am in though I feel great. Love taking a break from running. I have been just swimming and biking. It feels great. It is hopefully starting to cool off in Phoenix so in the eighties soon :o) Have you heard from any of the other ladies? Did everyone go MIA for the fall?

i did 2500 meters/1.55 miles today, this gets me to 22.31 done, 5.69 to go. i already know that i won't be able to swim next wednesday because i have to work, but i'll try to get in a few laps at least on monday evening. not having access to the pool at all times really sucks. if i can't go monday night or wednesday noon, i have to do without my swim.

OK Great so I did another 2500 yrds last night. So 4.09 + 1.42 + 1.42= 6.93miles I did get a message from MHENNE02 that everyone has jumped over to Amazon. I was thinking of going as well. But, if you are still here I will stick around and try to get this done first. I love how you call it TOM. I do the same and everyone usually has no clue what I am talking about. :o)

you were at 4.09 miles the last timeyou posted, shannon! it's good to see you back, i thought i was all alone here now that shu is done. you may still have a chance to catch up, i'm not doing so very good this month, was excited to go to the pool last night but then skipped it because of a quite unexpected and unwelcome appereance of TOM. good to see you swimming again, girl!

SO I took a really long break. I may have started this challenge a long time ago. I do not remember how far I got so it looks like I am starting over. 2500 yrds=1.42 miles

hey Shu, glad to see you back at it (and posting!) I feel what you're saying about newbies who don't know the etiquette yet. mostly, though I find them pretty accommodating if you can catch them at the wall and let them know what you're doing. if it's just the two of you, maybe you can split the lane straight down the middle... just suggestions. keep swimming!! are you going to join the amazon swim when you're done?

Bine, I know I sounded like such a meanie in my last post. I hope I didn't offend anyone. The pool is divided into leisure lanes and lap lanes. The guy was pretty young, around my age, and just stood around, blocking the wall so I couldn't do flip turns, and got mad at me when I tried to swim around him! Ah well, I guess I'll have to wake up early and grab a morning workout, when there are less people! :)
Swam 2950m last night, which brings my total to 26.3 mi. Only 1.67 mi to go and I will have swum Lake Ontario! Woo hoo!
Hope you can have a chance to relax this weekend after the show, and have a great swim next week.

sorry, i have been MIA, we have been crazy busy at work here for a show tonight and i hope to be back in the water next week when things have calmed down.
shu, we have loads of people like this. lots of old ladies who mainly come to the pool to chat and tread water or hold on to a wall. they are always sweet, so i can't be mad at them for getting in the way! swim on, you're almost done!

Swam 1250m yesterday. It was a good swim, but a clueless guy jumped into my lane with me and another very fast swimmer, and he messed up our rhythm. I really hate it when people are inconsiderate and don't move out of the way when they're standing on the wall so you can do a proper flip turn!

Ali posted on my spark page, asking where I was. I slacked off in posting my distances. I have swum 5.4 mi since my last post, so that brings me up to 23.7 mi. I have 4.29 mi to go before I have swum Lake Ontario!

ali, good to hear you are doing better and are motivated again! you will feel like new in the pool!
shu, ridiculous indeed! but at least you got in a good run, and we are swimming head to head now.
but i skipped my swim today, i had thought about an all pulling session but THEN i strained my shoulder this morning. how ridiculous is that? i'm having dificulties with the cold - the temperature dropped to the lower 50s and i'm refusing to turn on the heating in the middle of september. i'll give it a few days rest and try again next monday!
you all have a good rest of the week swimming!

18.3/28.0 -- the pool closes for an hour between 630 and 730 PM. How ridiculous! What am I supposed to do for an hour? I ran two miles right before the swim so I decided to go home. I felt tired yesterday and was frustrated that I could only swim 0.8 mi yesterday.
Sorry to hear about your leg, Bine! Ali, we'll be waiting to hear about your distance after your swim today! :)
Only 9.7 mi to go! Swim long and strong, ladies, and don't forget to heat up that water a little.

Well done Jay!! Thanks for the invite... I promise not to trash the place when I get there. Do you realize, you just swam across an entire lake!? And back to your home town... How sweet. So we've got the swim, the bike ride, now we just need to run to the next challenge, and we're triathletes! LOL. You up for the Amazon? Come join us (when I'm done being sick and eventually make it out of lake o myself) in the murky waters... you're a distance swimmer now, gotta keep those arms moving! :)

Wish I could be there to 'que it up with y'all, but hope you all had fun. It's Labor Day here in the States so the pool is closed today. I'll be looking to swim another two miles tomorrow evening! 2 miles has been a goal of mine since March and finally I can do it. Thanks so much for all of the encouragement. :) We are blessed to live in an age where we can get support through message boards! I'm not sure what I'd do without sparkpeople -- I've made such great strides, all thanks to accountability and support and the motivation to live a better, healthier, richer life.

Righto, I made it today with a 1500 yard finishing kick.
Very exciting for me -- I lived in Toronto for more than 18 years prior to March of this year. Homecoming! Here are directions to a barbecue at my old place (I'm sure my landlord will mind, but the other tenant won't):

leelee, don't worry about those piranhas and gators - i've swum the amazon before and they seem to prefer locally grown brazilian swimmers! even piranhas are going green!
shu, i won't be able to keep up with you if you continue at that pace! i can only go to the pool twice a week and i don't get in more than 3000 meters at a go - but you keep going, there's free drinks waiting!
