If anyone is interested, there will be a morning walk @ Circle B Bar on Sunday, June 29th. Because of warm weather, it will be starting early. If interested, contact Jan Wells @ 863-608-2046. She has requested no texts. Info from Heartland Chapter Meetup.com below.

Meet in Nature Center Parking lot. Circle B Bar Reserve is on Winter Lake Road between US 98 and Thornhill Road.

Please note, no pets are allowed at Circle B Bar Reserve. Meet in the parking lot of the nature center. {Call Jan for time}.

This is moderately paced hike with lots of opportunity to observe wildlife. It will be a two-part hike: the first half will be 2.5 miles (approximately) and then those wishing to leave may do so; the second half will be another 2.0 miles (approximately). Bring hiking shoes, brimmed hat, water, sun, and insect protection. Please be prompt.

Trek Ten has a hike Saturday. See info below:
Join the Friends of the Parks for a 3.5 mile guided hike on the Acorn Hammock Loop Trail. This scenic trail is mostly shaded as visitors move through an oak hammocks and historic pine flatwoods. Trails may be seasonally wet; look for the old footbridges which allow visitors to cross some of the wetter areas.

WHEN:

Saturday, March 8, 2014 9:00 am until 11:00 am

WHERE:

Marshall Hampton Reserve on Thornhill Road. This 1173 acre former ranch was purchased in 2008 by the Southwest Florida Water Management District in connection with the Lake Hancock water level modification project and is managed by Polk County Environmental Lands.

Several opportunities for exercise this month. As I mentioned before, I'm leading a bike ride on the Auburndale-TECO trail on Sat. 2/15. It will be about 10 miles up, take break, and ride 10 miles back with possible side trips. Afterwards some of us will be going to Peebles Barbeque. emoticon

On Saturday, February 8th. there are two hiking opportunities. Florida Trail Heartland Chapter will be hiking in the Lake Wales region. It will be 5+ miles. If you're interested in this or the bile ride, email me through SparkPeople or at EileenV3@gmail.com

Also, on Sat. 2/8, Trek Ten Trails will be hiking the Blue loop in Tenorac. That hike is from 9am to 11am. I have copied into from the email below.
WHAT: Guided hike at the Tenoroc Fish Management Area (2 mile loop trail)

WHEN: Saturday, February 8, 2014 9:00am until 11:00am

WHERE: Tenoroc Mine Rd, Lakeland, FL 33805

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

From US 98 and the Polk Parkway: One mile north of the Polk Parkway turn right onto SR 659 (Combee Rd). Continue north 6.4 mi. Turn right onto Tenoroc Mine Rd and continue east almost two miles.

GPS Coordinates for Parking:
N 28° 06.436 W 081° 51.909

PUBLIC ACCESS:

Stop at the Tenoroc Headquarters and purchase your pass for Tenoroc and Bridgewater ($3 Daily Use Permit per person or an annual WMA Permit).

When you check in at Tenoroc let them know you will be hiking the blue blazed loop and want to park at Picnic lake and you want to visit Bridgewater and hike the blue loop trail there. Open 4 days a week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday), 6 AM to 8 PM during periods of Daylight Savings Time and 6 AM to 7 PM during periods of Eastern Savings Time.

THINGS TO SEE

Although mining has modified the natural environment of Tenoroc, habitats support abundant birdlife. Tenoroc is a gateway for the East Section of the Great Florida Birding Trail, which spans an eighteen-county area. Tenoroc lies along a major historical songbird migration route that once followed hardwood forests lining the Peace River. Birding hotspots are numerous. The trail passes the Collins Cemetery where some of Polk County’s early pioneers were laid to rest.

NOTE: Dogs are prohibited unless leashed as authorized by Commission.

VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE DETAILS: www.friendsoftheparks.net

For more information contact Marian Ryan 863-293-6961 or marianryan@gmail.com

If I wasn't doing the hike in Lake Wales, I would do this. I have spent a lot of time there between Trail Maintenance (including painting blazes & lopping) as well as hikes. This part of the trail system (accessed from Combee Road) is not as strenuous as the part accessed from Saddle Creek Park).

Happy February all! emoticon

I'm sorry I didn't thing to mention this earlier. I apologize. Bok Tower has a celebration tomorrow and entry is free. That being said, the place could be mobbed. If you haven't been there before, it's a beautiful place to exercise in.

Reminder two fitness activities this Sat. I'm leading a hike for Heartland Chapter Florida Trail on the Tenorac Trail that originates in Saddlecreek County Park off of 92. The hike will be about 6 miles. Depending on pace of group will take between three & four hours. If you hare interested, email me through SparkPeople.

Trek Ten is having their January event at Tiger Creek in Babson Park. Check their webpage for more info.

The Tenorac hike will be more rigorous than the Tiger Creek. There are no bathroom facilities @ Tiger Creek but there is at Saddlecreek Park.

When you think about Exercise activities, don't forget Bok Tower. I was there yesterday to exchange a shirt. While there, I focused on getting exercise. I made it up the hill five times. I was going to stop at four but wanted some ice cream. I decided I would do ice cream if I did a fifth trip up the hill. Done at a fast pace, you can do it aerobically. So much prettier than doing a treadmill at the gym.

Additional note, Val & I have a membership. We use our membership a lot to get half price on a lot of attractions in the state. If I want to go to Polk Museum of Art, it's free with my membership.

If interested in a seven mile hike on New Year's Day, please reach out to me OR go to Heartland Chapter of Meetup.com. A hike is a great way to start the New Year.
I will be leading a hike at the Saddlecreek section of Tenorac on Sat. Jan 11th. That hike will be about 6 miles long.
Also, on February 15th, I'm leading a bike ride on the Auburndale-TECO trail. It will be an approximate 20 mile ride. There will be a good break half way.

If anyone is interested in a longer hike, Heartland Chapter of Florida Trail is having a hike @ Tiger Creek. It will be about 7 miles. If interested, reach out to David Waldrop @ david_lwfl@yahoo.com for more details. They will be meeting at a different spot and then carpooling in. Tiger Creek is in Babson Park.
I may be doing that hike--am unsure at this point.

Lakeland Highlands Scrub is a 551 acre Polk County Environmental Lands site that features a 2.2 mile multi-use trail and a 0.6 mile walking trail. The natural communities in this ecosystem are very diverse including sand live oak, scrub, dry prairie, pine flatwoods, depression marsh, basin marsh, and basin swamp.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Polk Pkwy (SR 570) Exit 9, take Lakeland Highlands Blvd (CR 37B) south. Reach 540A at 1.8 miles, and continue south another mile, crossing Crews Lake Rd.

OR, take US 98 south from Lakeland or north from Bartow to 540A and head west. Turn left on Lakeland Highlands Rd. After crossing Crews Lake Road, Lakeland Highlands Blvd becomes a dead end road. Keep going to where the road ends at the trailhead.

Some " Relay For Life" events will be taking place in downtown Bartow this coming weekend, starting on Friday, April 12. The downtown area will be partially blocked off and BBQ and Mexican food will be sold along with other things. On Friday evening, a band will play in the area that is blocked off. There will also be several evening races. Many local businesses have been selling raffle tickets for donated items. The majority of the funds collected will go to "Relay For Life". Please check your local paper for the cost of this event.

I got a chance to pre-hike the trail I'll be leading on Saturday. It is a new hike in an area recently worked on by to put it back to the natural state. There were several water birds today--someday the area will be teaming. It is a really pretty hike with parts in shade and parts by water areas. I'm looking forward to more hikes on it. In another year, there probably will be more wildflowers on the trail.

If anyone is interested in joining me on Sat am (it's an early start), please email me @ EileenV3@gmail.com.

I had taken a half-day off--was hoping the rain wouldn't be an issues. I only walked five miles; on Saturday, the distance will be closer to seven.

Info is below:
ATTENTION: NEW TUESDAY AND THURSDAY GROUP RIDE FOR BEGINNERS! Beginning tonight, there will be a group ride leaving from the large parking lot on the north side of the county line road exit and I-4. This ride is for beginning riders, especially kids and women, who may or may not have group riding experience. The pace will be 14-18 miles per hour and is a no drop ride. The distance will be between 16-24 miles, but we will pass the parking lot every eight miles if you need to stop. All riders are welcome. There will also be an A and B level ride leaving the lot at 6pm if you want more of a challenge. Julie Jerue will be leading the ride.

Thank you for the info.

As I think I mentioned before, I am leading a bike ride on the Auburndale-TECO trail on Saturday, March 23rd. It will be about 20 miles long. I'm doing with the Heartland Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. If anyone is interested, please email me through Spark or at EileenV3@gmail.com.

Our group is also doing a kayak @ Saddle Creek on Saturday, March 30th. You will need your own kayak; there are no rentals available.

However, over the summer I will be leading a kayak in the Apokaa area that will be one way with rentals available. It's on one of the springs and is an easy kayak. I'll have more about that later.

In April, there will be a Florida Trail hike at Tenorac. Again, for any of those events, please email me OR go to http://www.meetup.com/Heartland-FTA/

Trek 10 trails has not posted info on their March walk. You might want to check the website:
http://friendsoftheparks.net/2013TrekTen
Trails.html
The nice thing about the website are the info sheets on walking and/or hiking locations in Polk County.

The Heartland Chapter also has info on outdoor locations in the area. Their web page is:
http://heartland.floridatrail.org/

If you haven't been to Bok Tower lately, it's absolutely gorgeous. I was there last Saturday. Spent 40 minutes in continuous movement going up and down the hill side. It was a good workout. The Azaleas are awesome--and they're not the only thing blooming. (I also took some pictures & did a few sketches). What I love about my membership besides getting discounts in the gift shop is all the discounts I have gotten on other attractions in the state. If there is a discount, it is usually better than AAA. Again, it's a BEAUTIFUL location to get some exercise.

Hope all is well with all of you AND I look forward to when I'll be able to join you again at the dinners. They all have been a lot of fun.

The Bartow "Bloomin Arts Festival" in downtown Bartow will be held on Saturday, March 2, and on Sunday, March 3. The cost is FREE! The festival hours are 9a.m. to 5p.m.

There will be music, crafts, artwork, an antique car show and food. It is a family oriented festival that is priced just right!

Thanks, Cyndi! I should try some of those free group runs!! I vaguely knew about them, but appreciate you pointing out the details.

Also, there is paid group coaching from Faith Runners at $50 a month. The runs are group, I believe everyone gets individual consultation, though. I'm considering doing it, but haven't decided. The session starting March 4th, Monday eves 6-7pm, is aimed at preparing people for the Mayfaire event.

On April 13th there will be a 5K around Lake Hollingsworth to support a nonprofit agency serving autistic children. I'm pretty sure it is a morning event. Registration is not open yet. When I find out more, I'll let you know.

Thanks, Eileen. Appreciate the info.

I'll be running the Senior Games 5K starting at Bartow High School Track on March 9th at 8:30am, but I think registration has closed.

My nephew is going to run a 5K leaving from Winter Haven Public Library at 1pm on March 9th. I'm trying to decide, but I'm thinking of not racing it, but pacing him. Last time he did a 5K in 45 minutes plus a few seconds at walk 2 minutes/run 1 minute. The name of the 5K is something like Shamrock Walk, Run or Jog with your Dog. Only some of the races are or dogs. There is a kids' race as well. To register:

The Mayfaire 5K will be held on Saturday May 11th, 7pm, in Lakeland to support the Polk Museum of Art. Registration opened yesterday. It is a walking &/or running 5K. To sign up: www.active.com/running/lakeland-fl/3

Thank you for starting this discussion group AND the sharings. I've requested the email newsletter from Circle B Bar. I'll try to add activities as they come up (or I have time to share).

Here is a link to Trek Ten events. The site has info on their hikes & public lands to walk or hike on. There are links to different Polk county towns.
http://friendsoftheparks.net/2013TrekTen
Trails.html

There next hike is at 9an on Feb. 23 @ Lewis Arboretum, Winter Haven. Their walks are very family friendly; not too strenuous; and a nice social event.

Here are three links to Heartland Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. The group is into hiking, biking, kayaking, trail maintenance, and other misc activities. Most actuates are in Polk County.

https://www.facebook.com/heartland.fta
As a personal note, I'm in the group picture at the top of the page.

http://heartland.floridatrail.org/
This is the home page for the group. There are links to public trails & our calendar of events. The info re activities usually are more up-to-date on our Meetup.com group.

http://www.meetup.com/Heartland-FTA/
If you're not familiar with Meetup.com, I can express what a great resource it is. It costs nothing to join. Anyone with an interest who wants to pay $150/year can sponsor a group. The interests available are so varied. Because of the fee, some groups charge annual dues or charge per event. Heartland Chapter charges nothing to be a member or participate.

As a personal note, I'm leading a bike ride for Florida Trail on Sat. March 3
rd on the Auburndale-TECO trail. The ride will be about 20 miles long. After some of us willing be going to Peebles barbecue in Auburndale. All are invited to go after the bike ride.
Please contact me through Spark if interested.

Liane Plummer will be leading a nature walk @ Circle B Bar on Sunday. February 17th. You will get exercise but a pace you will be able to take pictures of the many birds that will be there. If interested, email me & I'll send you her info. She does this most months.

The day before on Sat. 2/16, there will be a hike @ Tiger Creek. Depending on the weather & participants, the hike will either be four or seven miles. Again, contact me for more info.

This Wednesday, Monica Hoerl, will be leading a hike in the Tenorac Area. This is becoming a monthly thing for her also. Again, If interested, email me & I'll send you her info.

Info doesn't seem to work as links. You may need to copy & paste the address to have them work. Sorry!

My Galloway group runs every Saturday morning. You are invited to run as a guest 3-4 times in a year before you are expected to join (and pay). We meet at Starbuck's at Lake Miriam Publix shopping plaza. There is almost always a group running at 6am, but mine often starts at 5am.

This is a run-walk-run group. The slowest group right now is run 30 seconds, walk one minute; repeat. You can almost always find a group running 4-6 miles and one running 10-12 miles. My group is run 2 minutes/walk 1 minute. We did 12 miles today. The year for this group starts in June and most people are training for half and full marathons from Nov-February. In June usually there are quite a few beginning runners. You need to be able to go three miles at least in run 20 seconds and walk 40 seconds. The group has people in their 20's, 30's, a lot in 40's and 50's, many in 60's, a few in their 70's. There are about 150 members.

If you google on "Galloway running" you will find the web site. You can e-mail Brendan, our leader, and he'll assign you to the best group for your needs. Or you can just show up and see what's available. Should anyone ask who invited you, say "Marsha West". Probably SparkMail me so I can be looking for you. After the run we sit around usually outside and drink coffee and visit. It's fun!!

The Circle B Bar Reserve, on Winter Lake Road in Lakeland, is a wonderful place for hiking and family events. I am on their email list and get a monthly list of events. Most of their events are free, which makes it even better!
