From EileenV3:
Some notes on two activities that I've shared through Teresa (thank you Teresa).
The tubing @ Kelly County Park is a very family friendly event. They have picnic tables and an inexpensive refreshment stand. The tube run is about 1/2 hour but you can get out in the middle section. The spring water is clear, very cool, with NO alligators. The park is fenced and they have lifeguards. It is an utterly refreshing way to be outside in Florida in the summer time. There is a short circular path that is also fun to walk. I have seen deer on the path.
Black tube rentals are available outside the park for about $5. Right now Publix has the right size tube for $6.99. The nice thing is that they are not black-it can get warm in the sun. I will be bringing a portable compressor to blow up my tube & anyone else's..
The bike ride is more "off" road than I first anticipated. You will be dealing with biking over roots.

I had a good time biking on Saturday. There were 16 of us. Thank you Teresa for sharing the information. I will leading a kayak trip on Saturday, March 17 in an area near Homasassa. Canoe & kayak rentals are available if anyone is interested.
It is with regret that I'm announcing that I will not be able to make the team dinners. Where I work we will be serving the Washington State area as well as Florida. However, there is a three hour time difference. I will be working Mon. thru Thurs. from 10:30am to 8pm with a half hour for lunch. I'm switching because I will have FRIDAY off. I will miss the dinners.

There is another opportunity for walking in Polk. For the moment, every month, a Florida Trail member leads a 3 mile Nature Hike at Circle B Bar on Sunday. The next one is tomorrow. If you are interested, please call Liane Plumhoff @ 644-2398. Her March walk will be on Sunday, March 18. Liane has volunteered @ Circle B Bar for several years and is very knowledgeable about the area. She's also a neat person.

There are some great opportunities for physical activity in Polk County whether in groups or by yourself.
One great resource for information can be found off of the FriendsOfTheParks.net page. Choose the link to 2012 Trek Ten Trails. The page has fact sheets on great places to walk in the county as well as information on their upcoming group walks. The group walks are incredibly family friendly. The next one is on February 18th in Haines City at Catfish Creek State Park. On March 17th,, the walk will be at Hilochee WMA at Four Corners.
I am a member of the Florida Trail Association. The Florida Trail is a trail that goes through the whole state of Florida. There is a connector trail in Georgia that links the trail to the Appalacian Trail. You can get more information on the state wide trail @ http://www.floridatrail.org/ If you explore the pages, you get links to outdoor activiites all over the state.
As part of the Florida Trail Association, I am a member of the Heartland Chapter. We have a webpage: http://heartland.floridatrail.org/ On that webpage is a map with links to information on trails all over the area. If you check out the "Calender of Events", you can information on events coming up with contact persons. Another place we post events is on Meetup.com. You can find us @ http://www.meetup.com/Heartland-FTA/
If you are interested in doing a 5 mile hike on Sat. 2/18, it will be @ KICCO. If you think you would like to go, please contact David Waldrop for time & directions. His phone number is 863-605-3587. I will be leading a bike ride for this group on Feb. 25th on the Van Fleet trail. if you interested, email me through SparkPeople.
A word about Meetup.com. Membership is free and it is a fantastic way to connect with other people in your area with similar interests. There are so many interests including physical activities, photography, mother's groups, political, singles, religious, and meeting for supper. To join, go to the main page and look for directions. Next list what type of activities or interests you have. They will set the default range of 25 miles from your location. I have mine set for 50 miles and get information on groups in Tampa & Ortlando. My husband & I kayak quite often with groups out of Tampa.
There is a new group that might be of interest to us in this area. It just started. It is called "Get In Shape for Summer" . Infomation may be found on http://www.meetup.com/Get-In-Shape-for-Summer/ The first event sceduled is for a 3 mile walk around Lake Hollingsworth on Sun. 3/4.

After falling yet again, I will only be able to attend walks for moral support and not for participation so, wherever anyone wants to walk is fine with me. In fact, I would absolutely LOVE for Vikki, Eileen or someone/anyone else to completely take over the walks and activities. I will still do the dinners and postings but, it isn't fair for me to add my comments or to vote when I cannot participate. Please, please, please advise as quickly as possible! Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!!!

I won't be able to make the walk. Yesterday, I got to kayak on the Hillsboro River. The original "snow birds" are back in abundance. Have you thought about going back to Circle B Bar for your walks. That is another place that should be teeming with birds. Wherever you go, enjoy! I will see you at the dinner this Thursday. For anyone interested, I am leading a bike ride on the Van Fleet Trail. It will start at the Polk City Trailhead going up to the next trail head. We'll stop to use the restroom & have a snack before heading back. The ride will be about 20 miles. After the ride, if you're interested, some of us will be going to The Other Place in Polk City for lunch. If you're interested, email me through SparkPeople.

Yes, we are still sending out team reminders. As a matter of fact, I was just coming on to remind everyone of this coming week's team dinner on Thursday and the the team walk on Saturday. Most members are responding with sparkmails thus, not showing up on the team page.
Team dinner is on Thursday, February 2nd, @ 6:00 at the Ruby Tuesday on South Florida Ave. in Lakeland. Yes, again. The team members attending have been having such a great time there that they have requested to go there yet again. It is located just north of the Polk Parkway making it easier access to those who live in other areas of Polk County.
On Saturday, February 4th, @ 9:00 am is the team walk at Lake Morton. We still meet at the north end of the lilbrary parking lot and walk from there. You are also welcome to bring your bicycle, skates or any other "toys" you wish to make your trip around the lake more enjoyable for YOU! We have some that walk, some that run and those in between. We have been having new attendees at both of these events and hope that the groups continue to grow!
Pick one or both of the events, just please and try to attend something. We would absolutely LOVE to meet YOU!!!

Are we no longer sending out email reminders for team events? Several people have asked me about it and I didn't know what to tell them. They missed the last team walk and the last team dinner. Just wondering....
I was at a loss as to what to tell them so I told them to contact the team leaders. I hope that was okay!

Thank You and Thank You. I look forward to meeting everyone. I am all scheduled and on board for Feb 2nd. I am "trying" to see if I can move a few things around to make the walk this weekend. I can't say for sure but I plan to try. I put this new calorie counter app on my smart device and it has been keeping me motivated. Thanks for warm welcome again. I appreciate it! Go Team!

Absolutely, positively, and for certain!!!! I will personally save a seat for you! I usually am there solo also since Bob's work schedule has changed. I am so very excited!!!! Can't wait to meet you!!! Plus, like Vikki just said, we are having a team walk this coming Saturday at Lake Morton if you can somehow make that, too! We meet at the north end of the Library parking lot @ 8:45 so that we can leave together at 9:00. You are more than welcome to bring ANYONE with you to the walks, kids/grandkids included!!! We do try and reserve the dinners for adults only, though. Sometimes a person just needs a "grown up" time out!!
WOOHOO!!!! GO, TEAM!

I hope I can still join this worderful team. I have been inactive for a LONG time due to medical reasons. I am getting back in the fold. I would love to join your next Team meeting at Ruby Tuesday's. I would be coming solo and it looks like the next meeting is Feb 2nd. I would love to meet some folks in Polk that are thinking about a healthier lifestyle. We can do it!

I added Spark Dinner to the planner with an email reminder. It's an easy way to get a point as well as a reminder.
Looking forward to the dinner--the company & conversation has always been great.

Team Dinner Thursday 1/12/2011 !
Be there !!
6:00, Ruby Tuesday on South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. It’s right off the Polk Parkway, convenient even if you are coming from the east side of the county. ( I come from Dundee so I know!)
Their menu has something for everyone. No matter what eating plan you are on there is something on their menu or salad bar you can eat.
If you’re feeling like a splurge they even have beer, wine and a full bar.
Bring a spouse, sibling, cousin, friend, or a neighbor, adults only. (Kids welcome at all team walks, dinners are adults only.)
DON’T BE SHY !! If you have never been to a team dinner you are missing out on meeting some really fun and supportive people. Even if you don’t know anybody, I promise you WILL FEEL WELCOME!! I didn’t know anyone the first time I showed up by myself and now I have some great friends!
Please let a team leader know that you will be there. We just need a head count. We like to make sure the restaurant has room for us so we can all sit together.
If you have any questions about our team dinners or walks feel free to Spark Mail me. I’ll give you my phone number and personally answer any questions you have. Seriously, you owe it to yourself to participate !!
WE CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU!

There are two opportunities for walks/hikes on Sunday, New Year's Day.
Florida Trail is having their annual New Year's Day at the Arbuckle Track in Lake Wales. If you're interested please email me.
Also, there will be a hike at Circle B Bar. Below is info I've copied & pasted from an emal I've received: Some Friends of the Parks members and Trek Ten Trails trekkers will be joining Commissioner English for his traditional hike on New Year’s Day at Circle B. Let’s make it a crowd - what a great way to ring in 2012!
IT'S A GREAT START TO THE YEAR TO DO A PHYSICAL ACTIVIITY.

There is a partial schedule for Trek 10 trails the website: friendsoftheparks.net/2012TrekTenTrails
On their page they have links to various walking sites around the county.
Note, the first event on 12/17 is at Marshall Hampton Reserves in Winter Haven @ 9am. Their walks are not strenuous but a fun group event that is also kid friendly. RE this walk please also see info below from an email I received:
"Who couldn’t use a little extra spending cash for the holidays? Organize a team of family, friends, neighbors, club or church members – and email me your team name. Then make sure your team members attend our Trek Ten Trails hosted hike at Marshall Hampton Reserve December 17 beginning at 9:00 AM. It’s as simple as that! The team with the most team members in attendance qualifies for the prize drawing. Cash amount is SECRET, but one of our trekkers won $50 at last month’s kickoff to our 2012 season just for wearing a pedometer:"
If you all are interested in doing this a group event, the person to email is: Glenda Mink @ GlendaMink@polk-county.net
After putting all this info up, I will also add, the Heartland Chapter of Florida Trails is doing a hike at Kissimmee State Park. I will be doing that. If anyone is interested, please email me for details or check the chapter website: heartland.floridatrail.org We have very few activities that are not open to the public.

No matter what kind of eating plan you subscribe to there is something on their menu that works. That's why we decided to go back. They have a very diverse menu and a full salad bar with a great selection of veggies and more.
Make plans! Put it on your calendar IN INK !! Be there or be square !!

Ruby Tuesday has an awesome salad bar. For an extra $1 you can order 3 sides to go with it. Sides include grilled and steamed veggies, baked potato and other goodies that are diet friendly. If you're maintaining or splurging there is a great menu to choose from, you don't have to limit yourself to salad and veggies. Come for the team companionship, AND have a great meal!
Will I see YOU there ??

Glad you had a good time at your walk.
On Dec. 3rd. our Florida Trail group is doing the MOSI rope course. Should be interesting. Originally I was only going, but the person leading it ended up with commitment she couldn't back out of so now I'm leading that event also.

I've been trying to think of an excuse not to show up tomorrow. Here's what I have come up with so far.
I'm too tired. It's too far to drive. I have football to watch. I need to do laundry. I don't have anything to wear. I need a hair cut. I haven't done my mani - pedi. My hip hurts. I need new walking shoes. I might not be able to keep up with everyone. It might rain. I should stay home and clean house. It's too early. It's too late. It might be too cold. It might be too hot. I don't know anybody. I don't feel like it. My husband needs me at home.
OK - You're right. Most of them sound pretty lame. SO - I AM GOING TO BE THERE !!
Are you going to be there? What's your excuse ??

I agree it was a fun dinner. I'm so glad I came. Two things, Ruby Tuesday is right next to the Polk Parkway South Florida exit on the side closer to Lakeland. The other thing, besides marking your calendar, you can use SparkPeople planner to send a reminder to you & you'll even get extra points for doing so.

Next team dinner is scheduled for Thursday December 1. There were only 6 of us tonight and we had the BEST time. Stayed way beyond finishing our meal and had a fabulous time chatting about the funnest stuff!
So mark your calendars RIGHT NOW. December 1, 6:00, Ruby Tuesday’s on South Florida Avenue in Lakeland. Close to the Polk Parkway so even those of us coming from the far east side of the county can get there. (I come from Dundee, so I know the issue of distance.) But it’s really, really worth it.
Ruby Tuesday’s has a great salad bar so everyone can stay on plan. If you want to splurge there’s a full menu to choose from. Get to know your team members. Gain health, lose weight, have fun and share the SPARK!
Put it on your calendar, IN INK! If something else comes up, repeat after me, “I already have a commitment for that night.”
As a new Team Leader I would really like to meet as many Team Members as possible. I have a December birthday and my birthday request is to have AT LEAST 15 people show up to help us celebrate on December 1.
If there are any other December birthdays – we’ll celebrate you too !!
Help make my birthday wish come true and come join YOUR TEAM on December 1. I promise you’ll have a great time!
Did I mention that I had a really great time tonight? Thanks to everyone that was there. We all have lots of Spark to share !!
