Some notes on two activities that I've shared through Teresa (thank you Teresa).

The tubing @ Kelly County Park is a very family friendly event. They have picnic tables and an inexpensive refreshment stand. The tube run is about 1/2 hour but you can get out in the middle section. The spring water is clear, very cool, with NO alligators. The park is fenced and they have lifeguards. It is an utterly refreshing way to be outside in Florida in the summer time. There is a short circular path that is also fun to walk. I have seen deer on the path.

Black tube rentals are available outside the park for about $5. Right now Publix has the right size tube for $6.99. The nice thing is that they are not black-it can get warm in the sun. I will be bringing a portable compressor to blow up my tube & anyone else's..

The bike ride is more "off" road than I first anticipated. You will be dealing with biking over roots.

Below is the activities calendar forwarded from EileenV. Thanks, Eileen, for all you do!!!

The Heartland Chapter of the Florida Trail Association has several events coming up. I have not in meeting times as it suggested you contact the activity leader. Knowing who may or may not be coming is very helpful to them. Details can also be found @ http://heartland.floridatrail.org
Please look for the calendar section. Please note on the home page, there are links to information on trails in Polk County.

For any event, please bring water & usually sunscreen. Bug repellent may be advised. Some sort of food-snack and/or lunch depending on event. Please check with event leader as what type of food is advised.

Sat. June 8th. there will be a hike starting from Saddle Creek Park off of US92. It will be about five miles long. This area is slightly hilly and most of the hike will be in a shaded area. If interested, please contact Monika Hoerl @ 863-858-3106. This is one of my favorite hikes; however, due to illness I had to cancel & will not be attending.

Sat. June 16th there will be a kayak trip. It is potentially @ Reedy Creek. However, it the water is too low the location will be changed. There are no kayak rentals available for this particular trip. If interested, please contact Bob Yost @ 863-644-5448 or bobalinks3@yahoo.com

Sun. June 17th there will be a nature walk @ Circle B Bar. It will be about three miles. Liane Plumhoff, who leads the walk/hike, is very knowledgeable about the plant & wildlife there. Please contact her @ 863-646-2398 or lplum@verizon.net

Sat. June 23rd, I'm leading a tubing activity @ Kelly Park on Rock Springs in Apoka. I've done it several times & love it. The tubing takes about 1/2 hour per trip. Option of walking against water (great exercise) or walking on trail. Tube rentals are available outside park. The drawback is that when Kelly Park reaches capacity, they will not allow anymore vehicles. We will meet @ I-4 & 27 to carpool. For more information, please contact me @ EileenV3@gmail.com or through SparkPeople. My cell phone is 757-636-9450. I can not answer it during work hours (10:30 to 8 Mon-Thurs) but will return voice mails.

Sat. June 30th there will be a bike ride @ Alfia River State Park. It will be on an off-road trail. You will need a bike with all terrain or wide tires. When the event was discussed, I understood that even though the trail is off-road, you will not need a mountain bike but please verify this with Teresa. For details, please contact Teresa Nugent @ 813-882-9558 or newgt@msn.com..

Sat. July 28th, I will be leading a kayak trip @ Weeden Island. Rentals are available. I do not have my details this yet.

There is another opportunity for walking in Polk. For the moment, every month, a Florida Trail member leads a 3 mile Nature Hike at Circle B Bar on Sunday. The next one is tomorrow. If you are interested, please call Liane Plumhoff @ 644-2398. Her March walk will be on Sunday, March 18. Liane has volunteered @ Circle B Bar for several years and is very knowledgeable about the area. She's also a neat person.

There are some great opportunities for physical activity in Polk County whether in groups or by yourself.

One great resource for information can be found off of the FriendsOfTheParks.net page. Choose the link to 2012 Trek Ten Trails. The page has fact sheets on great places to walk in the county as well as information on their upcoming group walks. The group walks are incredibly family friendly. The next one is on February 18th in Haines City at Catfish Creek State Park. On March 17th,, the walk will be at Hilochee WMA at Four Corners.

I am a member of the Florida Trail Association. The Florida Trail is a trail that goes through the whole state of Florida. There is a connector trail in Georgia that links the trail to the Appalacian Trail. You can get more information on the state wide trail @ http://www.floridatrail.org/ If you explore the pages, you get links to outdoor activiites all over the state.

As part of the Florida Trail Association, I am a member of the Heartland Chapter. We have a webpage: http://heartland.floridatrail.org/ On that webpage is a map with links to information on trails all over the area. If you check out the "Calender of Events", you can information on events coming up with contact persons. Another place we post events is on Meetup.com. You can find us @ http://www.meetup.com/Heartland-FTA/

If you are interested in doing a 5 mile hike on Sat. 2/18, it will be @ KICCO. If you think you would like to go, please contact David Waldrop for time & directions. His phone number is 863-605-3587. I will be leading a bike ride for this group on Feb. 25th on the Van Fleet trail. if you interested, email me through SparkPeople.

A word about Meetup.com. Membership is free and it is a fantastic way to connect with other people in your area with similar interests. There are so many interests including physical activities, photography, mother's groups, political, singles, religious, and meeting for supper. To join, go to the main page and look for directions. Next list what type of activities or interests you have. They will set the default range of 25 miles from your location. I have mine set for 50 miles and get information on groups in Tampa & Ortlando. My husband & I kayak quite often with groups out of Tampa.

There is a new group that might be of interest to us in this area. It just started. It is called "Get In Shape for Summer" . Infomation may be found on http://www.meetup.com/Get-In-Shape-for-Sum

After falling yet again, I will only be able to attend walks for moral support and not for participation so, wherever anyone wants to walk is fine with me. In fact, I would absolutely LOVE for Vikki, Eileen or someone/anyone else to completely take over the walks and activities. I will still do the dinners and postings but, it isn't fair for me to add my comments or to vote when I cannot participate. Please, please, please advise as quickly as possible! Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!!!

I won't be able to make the walk.
Yesterday, I got to kayak on the Hillsboro River. The original "snow birds" are back in abundance. Have you thought about going back to Circle B Bar for your walks. That is another place that should be teeming with birds.
Wherever you go, enjoy!
I will see you at the dinner this Thursday.
For anyone interested, I am leading a bike ride on the Van Fleet Trail. It will start at the Polk City Trailhead going up to the next trail head. We'll stop to use the restroom & have a snack before heading back. The ride will be about 20 miles. After the ride, if you're interested, some of us will be going to The Other Place in Polk City for lunch. If you're interested, email me through SparkPeople.

Yes, we are still sending out team reminders. As a matter of fact, I was just coming on to remind everyone of this coming week's team dinner on Thursday and the the team walk on Saturday. Most members are responding with sparkmails thus, not showing up on the team page.

Team dinner is on Thursday, February 2nd, @ 6:00 at the Ruby Tuesday on South Florida Ave. in Lakeland. Yes, again. The team members attending have been having such a great time there that they have requested to go there yet again. It is located just north of the Polk Parkway making it easier access to those who live in other areas of Polk County.

On Saturday, February 4th, @ 9:00 am is the team walk at Lake Morton. We still meet at the north end of the lilbrary parking lot and walk from there. You are also welcome to bring your bicycle, skates or any other "toys" you wish to make your trip around the lake more enjoyable for YOU! We have some that walk, some that run and those in between. We have been having new attendees at both of these events and hope that the groups continue to grow!

Pick one or both of the events, just please and try to attend something. We would absolutely LOVE to meet YOU!!!

Are we no longer sending out email reminders for team events? Several people have asked me about it and I didn't know what to tell them. They missed the last team walk and the last team dinner. Just wondering....I was at a loss as to what to tell them so I told them to contact the team leaders. I hope that was okay!

The nice thing about smaller groups is that you get a chance to chat more with everyone there. Glad for new people at the walk.

Hope you all had a good time on the group walk & were able to stay warm. My bike ride didn't start until 10am but I still started out with a lot of layers.

If anyone is interested, I'm leading a bike ride on the Van Fleet Trail for the local Florida Trail group on Saturday, 2/25. It will be about a 10 mile ride from the Polk City Trailhead to the Green Pond Road Trailhead. We'll stop there to eat & use facilities before heading back to Polk City. Some of us will be going to The Other Place in Polk City after the ride for lunch. If you're interested, email me through Spark.

There's also one in Colt Creek State Park. It's in today's Ledger if you want to check out the details. Starts at 10:00, approximately 2 miles.

I stay on my road and I don't change lanes.

There are two opportunities for walks/hikes on Sunday, New Year's Day.

Florida Trail is having their annual New Year's Day at the Arbuckle Track in Lake Wales. If you're interested please email me.

Also, there will be a hike at Circle B Bar. Below is info I've copied & pasted from an emal I've received:
Some Friends of the Parks members and Trek Ten Trails trekkers will be joining Commissioner English for his traditional hike on New Year’s Day at Circle B. Let’s make it a crowd - what a great way to ring in 2012!

Hope to see you at noon this Sunday.

OK ~ It's official, our next Team Walk is going to be in 2012. January 7. That gives you a week to get over your New Year's Eve partying, celebrating and likely EATING !!

Start the New Year out right. Join us for some fresh air, sunshine, exercise and good team fun and support. If you've not joined one of our walks or dinners you are really missing a good time!
9:00 a.m., Saturday morning 1/7/12 at Lake Morton in Lakeland. We meet in the library parking lot and walk from there. We have some who walk fast, others who walk slow and a few that walk even slower. So - don't think "I won't be able to keep up" or "they'll walk too slow." There is a pace for everyone. You might be that person who encourages someone to walk faster. Or you might be the one that is good company for one of the slower walkers. Speed doesn't matter. Making friends who help us on the path is what matters. Don't be SHY! We're all just friends who haven't met you yet! I personally have never met a stranger so I know that you and I are already friends!!

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions for our team walks, please feel free to send me a SparkMail. All the Team Leaders really want this to work for EVERYONE and we all want the team to GROW!

Our next Team Dinner is 1/12/12 at Ruby Tuesday's on South Florida Ave, 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Another great opportunity to meet all the friends you haven't met yet. Ruby Tuesday's has a very diverse menu. Everything from Vegan - they have a great salad bar with tons of options. Steak and potato lovers - they have all that. Chicken and seafood dozens of ways. Want to make it your splurge day? Their menu accomodates that too. Bring your spouse or your neighbor or your best friend or a stranger you met at the mall. Your kids are welcome on the walks, but DINNERS ARE ADULTS ONLY - Spark Membership NOT required.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions for our team dinners, please feel free to send me a SparkMail!

Your assignment for today, as you make your plans for 2012 ~ Send a little energy to TBRANCH2. She needs to be feeling better, ready to celebrate the holidays with her family. AQUAGIRL08 could use a little energy to help her move forward after sugery and through physical therapy. I'm sure there's others, so while you're at it, send a little energy for the whole team to be happy and healthy through the holidays!

I hope whatever holiday you celebrate it's a happy one. For me it's MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Vikki

There is a partial schedule for Trek 10 trails the website: friendsoftheparks.net/2012TrekTenTrails

On their page they have links to various walking sites around the county.

Note, the first event on 12/17 is at Marshall Hampton Reserves in Winter Haven @ 9am. Their walks are not strenuous but a fun group event that is also kid friendly. RE this walk please also see info below from an email I received:

"Who couldn’t use a little extra spending cash for the holidays? Organize a team of family, friends, neighbors, club or church members – and email me your team name. Then make sure your team members attend our Trek Ten Trails hosted hike at Marshall Hampton Reserve December 17 beginning at 9:00 AM. It’s as simple as that! The team with the most team members in attendance qualifies for the prize drawing. Cash amount is SECRET, but one of our trekkers won $50 at last month’s kickoff to our 2012 season just for wearing a pedometer:"

If you all are interested in doing this a group event, the person to email is: Glenda Mink @
GlendaMink@polk-county.net

After putting all this info up, I will also add, the Heartland Chapter of Florida Trails is doing a hike at Kissimmee State Park. I will be doing that. If anyone is interested, please email me for details or check the chapter website:
heartland.floridatrail.org
We have very few activities that are not open to the public.

Yes, Nov. 19th, then Dec. 3rd and 17th. Feel free to make arrangements for any extra walks on the other Saturdays! I am sure that others like to walk the Circle B, Bok Tower, Peterson Park and other locations.

Lake Morton walks are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month unless it falls on a holiday weekend then, we vote to skip it or move it.....

Good luck!

Hey gang!

I need help with the November 5th walk at 9:00 a.m. at Lake Morton. I have a family gathering that day (it happens only once a year) and will not be able to be there. Is anyone else able to step up to the plate and lead the walk that day?

Please let me know -- you're all awesome!

I should have sent a letter out to the team but hind sight is always 20/20. Sorry about that. I have made the decision to discontinue being a leader of the Polk County Team. As many of you know, I had surgery in September. The surgery was highly successful but left me with an nasty abscess at the surgical site. My doctor has tested me for MERSA and put me on some very strong medication. If that doesn't work, it will have to be removed surgically. I've felt very poorly for the last few weeks because of it.

On Monday, I started physical therapy which is very painful for me. I'm trying to work some muscles that haven't been used for four years, others that haven't been used for over a year. I have decided to focus all of my energy at this time on myself and my family. If I seem to disappear for a while, please understand. I will re-appear later on once I get my strength back.

Keep Sparking!
Cyndi

You were definitely missed as were the others who didn't make it!

Since there was such a poor turn out at the last team walk at the Circle B due to the "unlevel terrain" and "allergies", I am suggesting that the first team walk of the month is a dual location with those who want to attend at the circle B meeting there and those who can't, meet at Lake Morton. I'll take responsibility for the meeting/time at Lake Morton and anyone willing can take responsibility for the circle B meeting place/time.

The date is Saturday, November 5th, 9:00 (returning to the original time per the vote of today's attending members). This is for the walk at Lake Morton.

As for the circle B walk, a volunteer is needed.....will that be you? If so, let any of the three team leaders know and we will pass it on! Thank you for your cooperation!!

Saturday, October 22nd, @8:00 am, will be our next team walk. We are relocating the walks back to Lake Morton in downtown Lakeland since the weather is cooler. We meet at the north end of the parking lot for the Public Library. The paths are stroller, walker and wheelchair friendly with lots of shade. As always, ALL team walks are open to EVERYONE of ANY age! The more the merrier. We try to meet a few minutes earlier so that we can begin walking at exactly 8:00. See you there!!!

I apologize to anyone who arrived this morning at Circle B Bar to walk at 8am. I arrived 15 to 20 min late. I drove through the area by the portatoilets but that area was set aside for handicappped parking. I ended up parking in the Vendor area nearest the Florida Trail booth.

Did anyone else show up?

Teresa-I'm disappointed that you're not coming. I'll miss seeing you.

Re walking at Circle B Bar this Sat. my volunteer time at the Florida Trail booth will be in the afternoon so I will be able to do all the walk with whomever comes. My thought is to meet close to the porta-toilets unless you would like to meet somewhere else. Whomever comes please be aware that there will be more cars so you might want to come early. I have a Vendor pass so I may be able to get closer in.

I'm looking forward to walking with the group. emoticon

I am sorry to say that due to my instability on my feet, it is not in my best interest for me to attend the walk at the circle B. It is too much of a safety risk with the possibilities of my tripping and/or falling. My heart and thoughts will be with everyone!

However, I WILL be at the next team walk on Saturday, October 22nd at Lake Morton. It is to be at 8:00 am. See you there!

Have a great time at this week's walk at the circle B reserve!!!

Theresa

We had a good time too. My kids want to do it again. It was a nice workout.
