This has been an insane week. I have running (limping really) like a mad woman trying to get everything set for my surgery tomorrow. I will promise to be a better about posting when I get back home from the hospital. I will have time on my hands while getting pampered by my family. (A girl can dream, huh?)

My surgery is tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. . . . total knee replacement. I hope to have my dancing shoes on by Christmas! I will in hospital for 4-5 days. See you soon!

I may have my mom with me for the team dinner. She and my sister are driving in from Tucson, but don't want to drive to a deadine They may or may not make it in time. They are in Texas right now. Sis will be staying with her daughter; mom with me. Doubt if sis would want to eat out, anyway. She follows the McDougall diet.

Jane, you are very, very smart to start slow. I used to never wear shoes around the house (now I do thanks to Flylady). I put slip-on shoes by my treadmill and that helped me get started. I'd tell myself if I still didn't feel like it after 10 minutes I could quit. Almost always I felt better after 10 minutes and would do more. My friend who is a certified personal trainer used to laugh at me working out in my slip-on shoes, but honestly if I'd have had to take the time to put on tie shoes, I might not have gotten started. Of course, now I wear good tie shoes!!

Eileen, I'm going to try to get myself up to being able to take a hike of 5-6 miles. I'm starting small since I have to start where I am . . . which is wimp level. I walked my treadmill yesterday for the first time in a while as well as riding my bike and swimming, It is SOOO cold today I don't know if I can face the pool!

Trek Ten has a hike Saturday. See info below:
Join the Friends of the Parks for a 3.5 mile guided hike on the Acorn Hammock Loop Trail. This scenic trail is mostly shaded as visitors move through an oak hammocks and historic pine flatwoods. Trails may be seasonally wet; look for the old footbridges which allow visitors to cross some of the wetter areas.






WHEN:

Saturday, March 8, 2014 9:00 am until 11:00 am


WHERE:

Marshall Hampton Reserve on Thornhill Road. This 1173 acre former ranch was purchased in 2008 by the Southwest Florida Water Management District in connection with the Lake Hancock water level modification project and is managed by Polk County Environmental Lands.

Today I finally got below my ticker. It has been "stuck" for months. I have weighed more than my ticker for most of that time, but just couldn't do the discouraging task of increasing it. Today, after an incredible week of diet and exercise, I was able to lower my ticker by 4 pounds!!! Tah-duh!

I'm so excited. I'm hoping to be in "One-der-land" by July 1 and I'm definitely on track to achieve that short term goal!

Thanks for the goodies and notes of encouragement. You are, indeed, my peeps!

Reminder two fitness activities this Sat. I'm leading a hike for Heartland Chapter Florida Trail on the Tenorac Trail that originates in Saddlecreek County Park off of 92. The hike will be about 6 miles. Depending on pace of group will take between three & four hours. If you hare interested, email me through SparkPeople.

Trek Ten is having their January event at Tiger Creek in Babson Park. Check their webpage for more info.

The Tenorac hike will be more rigorous than the Tiger Creek. There are no bathroom facilities @ Tiger Creek but there is at Saddlecreek Park.

I've posted some formal exercise opportunities in that Discussion Forum; but the picture for our group gave me an idea re another general opportunity that might be forgotten.

When you think about Exercise activities, don't forget Bok Tower. I was there yesterday to exchange a shirt. While there, I focused on getting exercise. I made it up the hill five times. I was going to stop at four but wanted some ice cream. I decided I would do ice cream if I did a fifth trip up the hill. Done at a fast pace, you can do it aerobically. So much prettier than doing a treadmill at the gym.

Additional note, Val & I have a membership. We use our membership a lot to get half price on a lot of attractions in the state. If I want to go to Polk Museum of Art, it's free with my membership.

I trust everyone is full of the holiday spirit!? Now is time it is so easy to get it dampened by those crazy people at the mall . . . and one the roads! What on earth is it about the holidays that makes people nuts behind the wheel?

I'm doing only so-so as far as eating healthily . . . but if I can just make it through the holidays without jumping ship, I will be doing good.

Looking forward to the next team dinner. BTW, THANKS Eileen and Cyndi for the beautiful greenery baskets. They make me smile every single day . . . because they make me think of you and the fun time I had with you all on my lanai! We must repeat that in the summer when we can bar-b-que.

Hmmm. I seem to be checking in with myself. So here goes:

Jane: Hey Jane! How ya doing?

Jane: Well, I've had a pretty good week except for Thursday evening when I went nuts after Jordan's cameo roll as a snowman in the Kindergarten Christmas play. I decided to honor him by eating everything in sight.

Jane: Why?

Jane: I have no idea. Is there a doctor in the house? Preferably a psychiatrist.

Jane: No, but Marsha is pretty good at hard work on the head.

Jane: And Cyndi and Eileen and Donna inspire me. What to do?

Jane: Get right, girlfriend. No one else is going to do this for you.

Jane: Rats. Where's my mother when I really need her. Oh yeah. She was 100 pounds overweight. Gee, thanks Mom.

Jane: Bad! Bad! Bad! You have no one to blame but yourself. Not Mom or Bob or childbirth (which I know you blamed this on for 38 years).

Jane (feeling chastised): Ok. I get it. I will fix my ticker to reflect reality as Step 1. Track food this week for step 2. AND get moving for Step 3. That will work. I'm sure.

Jane: Just remember . . . I am watching you!!!

Just checking in to say HAPPY SATURDAY! I decided that I would make breakfast special to honor the weekend. We have basically the same couple of things all week, so today I changed it up by trying a new recipe for Basic Buttermilk Pancakes. You can make a variety of pancakes with this batter. I made Lemon-Blueberry today. Let me just say, these were the best pancakes I've ever made. Ever. Light, fluffy and loaded with fresh blueberries. Two four-inch pancakes plus 1/4 cup sugar free pancakes syrup and coffee creamer in my coffee for 318 calories. Big yum!

Moments like this help me realize that I can still "splurge" and say within the limits I need to follow to lose weight. The other variations are Pumpkin-Pecan, Cranberry-Orange, PB&J, Banana-Bacon, and Reverse Chocolate Chip. I'm sure the last two are higher calories, but nice for a treat . . . maybe for Christmas morning?

If anyone is interested, I will pass the recipe along. I will do that making a blog post. DRAT! I should have photographed them. They were gorgeous. I used half the batter to make 6 four-inch cakes. I had two. Bob had four! There is so little he has enjoyed eating for the past five months, it was s-w-e-e-t to see him chow down!

f anyone is interested in a longer hike, Heartland Chapter of Florida Trail is having a hike @ Tiger Creek. It will be about 7 miles. If interested, reach out to David Waldrop @ david_lwfl@yahoo.com for more details. They will be meeting at a different spot and then carpooling in. Tiger Creek is in Babson Park.
I may be doing that hike--am unsure at this point.

Lakeland Highlands Scrub is a 551 acre Polk County Environmental Lands site that features a 2.2 mile multi-use trail and a 0.6 mile walking trail. It contains one of the largest undeveloped scrub communities (140 acres) on the Lakeland Ridge. The natural communities in this ecosystem are very diverse including sand live oak, scrub, dry prairie, pine flatwoods, depression marsh, basin marsh, and basin swamp.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Polk Pkwy (SR 570) Exit 9, take Lakeland Highlands Blvd (CR 37B) south. Reach 540A at 1.8 miles, and continue south another mile, crossing Crews Lake Rd.

OR, take US 98 south from Lakeland or north from Bartow to 540A and head west. Turn left on Lakeland Highlands Rd. After crossing Crews Lake Road, Lakeland Highlands Blvd becomes a dead end road. Keep going to where the road ends at the trailhead.

I'm leading an aprox. 20 mile bike ride on the Van Fleet Trail next week, Sat. Oct. 5th. If interested, send me an email through SparkPeople.

Other Florida Trail events coming up in near future:
On Sat. Oct 12th starting from Paynes Creek Historic State Park are two events. One is a hike in that park (aprox. 6 miles). The other is a kayak on the Peace River. We will be shuttling cars to the take out point before the trip.
Sat. Oct. 19th, there will be a hike at the Tiger Creek Preserve in Babson Park (aprox. 7 miles).
Sun. Oct. 20th, there is the monthly 3 mile walk around Circle B Bar.

At our team dinner last week, we decided to plan the team dinners for the remainder of 2013. We felt that this would make it easier for people to plan during the upcoming holiday season. Here are the dates, times and locations for the October, November and December 2013, team dinners.


October Team Dinner

Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 6p.m. Applebee's

Wednesday, November 13 at 6p.m. Spice Thai & Sushi

Spice Thai & Sushi is located in the shopping center by Hobby Lobby. There was no web site available.


December Team Dinner and Holiday Party

Thursday, December 5 at 6p.m. At the home of JANEWATKINS (team member)

Team members will sign up to bring a dish. Directions to JANEWATKINS home will only be sent to those team members who sign up and plan to attend. (We do this for security purposes.)


Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend as many of these dinners as possible. If you haven't attended before and feel uncomfortable coming by yourself, please feel free to bring a friend or family member with you. (Many of our members bring spouses.) Team dinners are a good way to get support and they are fun!

I got a chance to pre-hike the trail I'll be leading on Saturday. It is a new hike in an area recently worked on by to put it back to the natural state. There were several water birds today--someday the area will be teaming. It is a really pretty hike with parts in shade and parts by water areas. I'm looking forward to more hikes on it. In another year, there probably will be more wildflowers on the trail.

I had taken a half-day off--was hoping the rain wouldn't be an issues. I only walked five miles; on Saturday, the distance will be closer to seven.

There was not website with a menu listed but I can tell you that they have a small salad bar, good pork chops and a nice 1950's family atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable; entrées are under $10.00. (At least they were the last time we were there!)

Does anyone know where to get the peanuts and equipment to make peanut butter with no salt? It's been suggested to me that to bring down my sodium intake one of the things I could do is buy peanuts to grind at Whole Foods. We don't have a Whole Foods here, do we?

Hope everyone is doing great!

I'm overall doing fine maintaining my weight, but I'm not close enough to perfect for me when it comes to eating. Don't know if this weight management/fitness stuff will ever get easy. But I will just keep on trying!!
