Wow it's been another busy week. I'm so happy it's Friday! Looking forward to the weekend. It looks like it might actually get above 50 degrees. I may be able to get outside a rake the lawn.

I have my own swim-technique lesson very early tomorrow, then I will teach 3 big parent/child swim classes in a row. After that, I'll do some errands on the way home, then chores, and getting ready for a busy Sunday (my own swim, back home to study for a re-cert exam, then a history club meeting and potluck, and prepping for the week ahead.)

I'm so happy it's Friday. I've had a really busy week and a busy weekend coming up. My granddaughter has volleyball tournaments all day on Saturday then on Sunday we have a birthday party for my grandson. Hopefully I can find some time to relax.

I'm home now. We had a great time. I even managed not to gain any weight. I always seem to gain weight at these things. Too much great food and an open bar.

Now to get through the long weekend. We are taking our granddaughter bowling and out to lunch tomorrow for her birthday. I like eating out but it's so hard to eat well at restaurants.

Headed out of town tomorrow until Wednesday. My hubby has a conference. I'm taking my workout clothes and am hoping to hit the hotel fitness center while I'm gone. I know one of the other wives that will be there and she was a pedometer and has a step goal. I'm hoping to talk her into a few walks while our hubby's are in sessions.
I'm taking my computer but I'm not sure how much I'll be on.
Have a great weekend everyone!

It wasn't at a facility. The woman doing it the 1st grade teacher at the school I sub at. She just held the class at the school in the auditorium. She only invited school employees. She has to have 8 hours of "community service" in as part of her certification. However after the 8 hours is up I bet we can talk her into holding more classes.

I'm so glad you liked the class. Write an enthusiastic note about it to the facility, and encourage them to add her classes to their regular offerings. (Many certifications require or suggest a period of teaching classes. I started off as an unpaid sub to get my water aerobics cert.)

I loved the yoga. I slept like a rock last night.

Unfortunately the class is just part of my instructors process to getting certified. It's going to take her a while so who knows if she will be teaching after this month is up.
It could be a couple of years before she is certified.

I hope you enjoy the yoga classes, Laura. I took some several years ago and loved it. If I can take off a few more pounds, I'd like to get back to it.

Hope everyone here is sparking right along. I've been really busy this week, which is why I haven't been around as much. I do see that we've gotten quite a few new members. That's great!

I'll be pretty busy the rest of the week, too. Lunch with my mom tomorrow (she's 80 and having back surgery on 2/17), hematologist with the hubby tomorrow afternoon, doctor appointment for myself Friday morning (no biggie), and doctor appointment for son early Saturday morning. Next week, I take the dogs to the vet and I have an appointment to have my income tax done. I'm hoping to somehow get a day free and clear to just relax and finish the book I'm reading. It's called "The Gift of Rain" and is really good in case anyone is looking for a good read. It's historical fiction, centered in Asia around the beginning of WWII.

Keep movin' and losin'!

Happy hump day!

Today I am going to my very first yoga class. I'm very excited. A teacher I work with got certified as an instructor. She's offering a beginners class for free for a month for school employees. I've wanted to try yoga for a while but being from a rural area have to drive an hour to get to one. This one is at the school where I sub less than a mile away!! Wish me luck!

He turned 10. We get to do it again in 2 weeks for my granddaughter's 13th birthday. She's a lot easier. My grandson is a bit high strung and has control issues, but he had a good time and was well behaved.

Just thinking about spending the day with little ones exhausts me! Sounds like you have a full day ahead of you today, too. Have fun and Happy Birthday to your grandson. (How old is he?)

Today was a day of relaxation for me -- my exercise day off. I'm going to head in and watch the Superbowl now and try to write a blog later.

Plans for the week ahead: several doctor appointments, lots of fitness, and piano lesson on Tuesday.

I'm physically and mentally tired. Thursday I subbed in 4th grade (the class from hell) and yesterday I subbed in kindergarten. I love the little ones but they suck the energy right out of you.
Today we are going to a charity basketball game which is fun and lots of laughs. Then we are going bowling with our grandson for his birthday. I'm going to be pooped by the end of the day, but it will be a fun day.

Hi,

I'm late checking in and I hope everyone had a good day.

Jo-Ann, I'd say you live in New England somewhere, what with all that snow you've got. It was nice that your neighbors helped out.

Robyn, don't work too hard. Hopefully, the person you're filling in for will be back soon.

I didn't sleep well last night, so I'm pretty tired today. I still got up and went to the gym for ST & water aerobics this morning, which I'm pretty proud of. It would have been very easy to blow it off because I was so sore and tired. Been playing catch up all day. Was able to run some errands, practice my piano. and have lunch with Dottie, which is always entertaining. We go to the Friendly's near us and they know us there. It's kind of like our version of "Cheers" -- you know, where everybody knows your name. Right now, I'm listening to the wind blow things around outside. It was nice outside today, but once the wind kicked in, the temp dropped like a rock and now it's FREEZING! We're supposed to get a good bit of snow tomorrow night, so I'll be shoveling with Jo-Ann. UNLESS it's a wet, heavy snow. Then, we'll use the snow blower.

I just looked at this and realized I'm rambling. Sorry about that. It's because I'm so tired. That means only one thing . . . time for bed.

Nighty night!

Kathy, I am sorry you trip was not all you planed it to be.

My sister has now gone home emoticon , I don't get to see her more than 2 or 3 times a year since our move to Northamptonshire, but I still see her more than my parents or brother.

I am feeling particularly tired this week as I have been covering for a cleaner at the church nursery who is off sick. Yesterday the pastors wife phoned and asked me to clean the church too as that cleaner has time off.

I shoveled for 2 hours yesterday. Thankfully, although it was deep, it wasn't too heavy. Our nice neighbors used their snowblower on the front walkways that I was dreading facing today. We had a lot of drifts that were chest-deep (or more) on me.

Lots going on here . . .

Got my new Fitbit Charge HR and I think I figured out how to assimilate all the information it provides (and it provides A LOT!). I've got it synced with SP, but not everything crosswalks exactly with SP, so I have to be careful not to double-enter some things. I'm really excited about the sleep monitoring function and am already using it. Improving my sleep is one of my SP goals and I'm happy to say that is one piece of info the syncs in with SP very nicely.

Happy to report that we didn't get as much snow as anticipated. That means we didn't have to use the snow blower and got some good exercise shoveling. We have a double-wide driveway, a back patio, and a long sidewalk across the front of our home that needed to be cleared, so I got lots of extra fitness in today.

Hope everyone is doing well and that our friends in New England are all safe, dry, and warm.

Happy Sparking!

Kath sorry to hear your trip wasn't that good. Glad you got to go to the zoo. I love the zoo. Monkey's are my favorites.

No baby yet. He's actually not due until the 29th but she's ready to go now. Then it will be one down one to go. I have another grandbaby (a girl) due April 1st. Then the grand total will be 14. Yes 14 grandkids!!! 7 boys and 7 girls.

I'm back and I have to tell you, I really missed you guys!

Hope you have fun with your sister, Robyn!

I'll be shoveling snow with you today, Jo-Ann. We're in PA -- right on the tip, across the river from Trenton, NJ -- and right on the line between "heavy snow" and "blizzard". We're expecting anywhere from 10 to 20" of snow and the winds are already whipping around pretty strongly.

Laura, I hope you new grandbaby is already here and that all went smoothly (and quickly) for your daughter (in-law). Great job with the squats. I'm keeping up with mine, too.

I wish I could say my trip was a great success, but there was a bit of an emergency. Short version of the story: it snowed the day before I left, so travel to wasn't the best. I had a nice, long walk on the boardwalk and terrific dinner the evening I arrived. The next day, I had went to the zoo and took some nice shots of the animals (I especially loved the otters!) After that, everything we downhill. The woman who owned the B&B where I was staying had her terminally ill father staying at the B&B and she was taking care of him. She didn't tell me, so I had no idea what was happening. He died the morning after I went to the zoo, so, of course, with everything going on, my trip was cut a bit short. I just wish she'd told me the situation before I went because I would have chosen a different option. I ended up driving home in a snow storm and now it's snowing here again. Guess I'll be getting lots of exercise tonight!

Everyone, stay safe and warm!

Waiting is driving me crazy. I have a grandson due anytime now. Just waiting for a phone call saying they are on their way to the hospital. Luckily she goes quick when they do...not so luckily the hospital is 35 miles away. She had or at least half had my granddaughter in the elevator. emoticon

Sorry to be so "missing" these past few days. Just really busy and getting ready for my trip. Had a few issues with hubby that had to get taken care of, too. Heading off for a long weekend of relaxation tomorrow morning and will be back Sunday afternoon.

Hope everyone is doing well. I promise to catch up as soon as I get back.

Keep your Spark shining! (It's snowing tonight and the forecast is for more on Saturday, so I may need you to light my way home!)

I am using exercise as a stress reducer. I am currently looking for a job and trying desperately not to let it stress me out that I am not working. I am not used to being idle and the exercise is helping me to focus and not think about unemployment so much.

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Today is going to be a relaxing day. I'm making jambalaya in the crock pot which involves a lot of chopping. I put a ton of peppers in it.
Then hubby and I will work on a puzzle we have going while watching the movie Battle of the Bulge which I got for Christmas. I'm hoping to get my 10,000 steps in as well.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks, Laura. Yesterday was better and today will be better still -- no stressful appointments or meetings. I plan to practice my piano, spend some time with my dogs, and workout.

Hope everyone here has an active, healthy, and Sparkly day!

Hey Kathy sorry to hear that you've had such a hard and stressful time lately. Hopefully things get better for you. Don't let the stress get you down. Take a nice hot bubble bath or try some yoga. That always helps me when "life" gets hard.
Remember that we are here if you need us.

Hi, all! Sorry I've been "away". The past couple of days have taken their toll on my psyche. First, I had a less than stellar workout at the gym the other day, which made me a bit cranky. Then, my hubby (who is elderly), started to have "issues" that I don't want to get into here. But we ended up spending 2 hours at the doctor's office yesterday. They took some blood and we have a couple of things to check out, one of which is a "mental status change" eval with a neurologist. (I have to make that appointment on Monday.) By the time I was done at the doctor, I fell off the old SparkWagon in a BIG way. Completely skipped my scheduled workout and my dinner was a cheesesteak hoagie with mayo, French fries, a light beer, and a Hershey bar. OUCH!

This morning, I had a 2 hour meeting about my son, which is always a stressful thing for me. Fortunately, all went well, so my cortisol levels are starting to drop.

I'm back on track with food and exercise today, but still feeling a bit "blue". I'm really looking forward to my little mini-vacation this coming week (Thursday -- Sunday) and hope the quiet and solitude will help me regain a bit of my "normal" balance.

I'm heading back to the gym for ST and water aerobics tomorrow, so you suggestions for what to do in the pool will come in handy, Jo-Ann. We're already doing some of what you suggested and I'm going to try to vary the tempo and add in some diagonal kicks tomorrow. Are skis the same as lunges?

As far as Wal-Marts go, I've got the same situation as Jo-Ann, I can think of at least 3 right off the top of my head that are less than 10 miles from my home. I try to stay out of them as much as I can.

Hey, MyMollyCat! Thanks for chiming in! It's nice to see you! I have a fed dvds that I like to use when I can't get to the gym and outdoor exercise isn't feasible. The one that kicks my butt the most is Leslie Sansone's 4-mile walk. I've looked at some of the SP and youtube videos and they look pretty good. Problem for me is that my computer is in a room that's too small for exercise. Otherwise, I'd try them out.

Hope everyone has a nice evening.

Let your Spark shine!

Sometimes it's a pain to drive all that way just to get to a Walmart but most of the time it's worth it. I love my little town. It's nice not having traffic or a ton of people.

I like the spark videos but most of the time I find stuff on YouTube to do.

Heh, I can think of 4 Walmarts within 10 or 15 miles! I bet there are more that don't spring to mind.

LOL. Most people are floored when they find out I have to drive 40 miles to get to the nearest Walmart. We have one stop light in the whole county. emoticon .

We do have a McDonalds (I don't eat there) and a Subway (I do eat there).

We do have a hotel with a pool. Unfortunately it closes from Dec to the beginning of May. No others in my area. I live in a VERY rural area. There are only about 9,000 people in my county (about 2,500 in my town)....and in the winter we lose a lot of people that head to Florida.

I'm glad you liked the tips, Kathy.

Instead of shoulder level, try chest level water for most moves to keep your core muscles more stable. If it is too deep, you are not able to control/engage your abs as well, and your body may not remain aligned properly.

One way to vary your current moves would be to change the tempo to vary the intensity: slow, slow, quick, quick, quick, repeat.

You could do this with jogging and marching, as well as alternating kicks straight in front, and also "diagonal kicks" with left foot kicking to 10 o'clock and right foot kicking to 2 o'clock.

You could also try cross-country ski moves as well as jumping jacks. (In the water, your arms go out to the sides but stay in the water, then you clap underwater near your stomach instead of out of the water above your head. Really use your arms to push out/pull in.) Look online for youtube videos showing different variations on skis and jacks. These would all work with the slow/slow/quick/quick/quick tempo, too.

Another one is reaching across to touch (or aim for your opposite ankle), then switch. You can also reach behind for your opposite heel. A variation on these is to do 16 touching in front, 16 in back, then 8 front/8 back, then 4 front/4 back, then finally 2 front/2 back.

Another one I like is standing arm's distance from wall, facing it (but not holding on). Jog, landing on flat feet, tapping the wall with your toes. Keep it low at first. If that feels OK, kick higher. If that feels OK, kick even higher. (If it isn't comfortable, just kick low the entire time.) Randomly call High/Low/Medium and kick there. If no hip issues and it feels OK, you can also kick diagonally (kick right leg to the left, etc.) Try to increase your pace and keep it steady.

Let me know how these work out!

Lakendal, I wonder if there are any "hidden" pools near you that have some hours they are open to the public. Some hotels will let you pay to swim or attend their fitness club classes. Colleges and technical high schools sometimes have public swim times, as do some senior centers and community centers. Some gyms and country clubs here have pools and water aerobics classes. Ask around, you never know!

Those are GREAT tips, Jo-Ann, and much appreciated. I will share them with Dottie.

I took a water aerobics class a few years back, read a short book, and looked some stuff up online and we're winging it on our own based on that. I think we get a pretty good workout because we're both pretty beat afterwards. When we exercise, we're in water up to our shoulders. No noodles or equipment of any kind, but we'd both love to try it. Right now, we're mostly jogging in various forms, jumping, kicking in different directions, and doing so exercises at the side of the pool. We're probably going to want to add some new moves pretty soon because the same ones are getting a bit boring. Are there any exercises you particularly like or find effective?

Thank you again!

Sounds like a great day, KALANTHA.

There are lots and lots of YouTube videos online. I'll take a look and see what I can find.

What sort of workout are you doing now? Are you in shallow or deep water, or both? Do you have an instructor? Do you have access to any equipment, kickboards, pool noodles, resistance hand weights?

Best generic tips:
1. Actively think about posture. Ask your buddy to let you know if she sees you slumping, leaning, or butt sticking out. Keep your butt tucked under, not trailing out behind. Engage your abs by picturing pulling your belly button in towards the back of your bathing suit. Relax your shoulders downward. Land on your flat feet, no tiptoes (to prevent shin splints), keep knees "loose". Many exercises are done with legs at "shoulder width" apart. This is much narrower than many people think. Raise your hands up in front of your shoulders, then bring them down in a straight line to determine correct leg placement. Too wide apart means your body isn't properly aligned, abs not properly engaged.
2. Pay attention to what moves you really don't like. Those may be the very ones your body needs the most. See if you can reframe your thinking about those moves to help you make progress--actively try to make friends (or learn to tolerate) with those moves. Some of my own tricks: count the reps down backwards to make them seem to go faster; put yourself on auto-pilot and just do it.
3. Challenge yourself, constantly. It is easy to fall into a habit of just paddling around and chatting or doing the minimum of the instructor's moves, but the best way to burn calories and get stronger is to consciously push yourself hard enough that conversation becomes more and more difficult. (You should be able to get in a few words, now and then, but breathing and working hard.) Remember that even if you have a teacher, you are in charge of getting your own good workout. Try doing a couple of extra reps or jogging a little faster for just a little longer.
4. Stretch before and after, drink extra water to prevent leg cramps. Don't do anything that hurts. Let instructor know before the next class if you had any pain--she may be able to help you modify a move or make sure you are doing it correctly.

Did you know that there's a Water Aerobics Spark team?

Thanks WHYNOTJ1 My favorite inspirational quote today: Breathe in inspiration and trust yourself. The answer is, "Yes, you can."

Love that. Yes, I can......and I am! It feels so good to be doing this for myself instead of all of the dread I was feeling about not taking care of myself and how hard it is to get started blah blah blah. I'm about two and a half months into this leg of my journey and my spark is officially a flame. Hope every one is having a great week!

A late check-in for me . . .

I had a busy day: piano lesson, lunch with a friend, errands, and a long, cold walk at the park. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow because I get to do 60 minutes of water aerobics, which is sooooo much easier on my hips and knees. My best friend and I go 3 times a week and it's really helped our workout routine. Unfortunately, we're basically putting our routine together ourselves as we go. I was wondering, Jo-Ann, if you might give me a few tips for an effective workout since you teach. Do you know of any good water aerobics videos?

I'm off to bed very soon.

Hope everyone has a good night!

I already got in a decent workout today and the kitchen cleaned up. I have other little household chores to do. Tomorrow morning I'm subbing in 2nt grade and Wednesday I have jury duty (unless it's canceled). I need to start working on a grocery list/menu. Friday is payday so we will probably do a major shopping trip by going to Walmart and the meat market. I love getting my grocery's there just wish it wasn't such a long drive.

Hi Kalantha,
I swim every day. I teach water aerobics classes (I'm in the water, too) four nights. I'll also be riding stationary bike 3 nights for 30 min. and starting to increase my walking. (I had a very sore knee for a couple of months, so I needed to pace myself to get through all the other activities above, plus it has been cold and icy out. Knee is finally better, so I am going to start adding a few minutes more walking every day to get back to what I'd been doing earlier.)

What does everyone else have planned.

Hi, team!

Walking in the house is a popular sport! When I find myself short on steps for the day, you'll see me doing laps around my living room or dining room table! Every step counts!

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was very busy, but productive. I'm happy to say I finally got all the Christmas stuff moved up into the attic and was able to walk outside today. It's been way too cold here for about the last week and I was getting cabin fever in a very bad way.

I'm ready to start the new week and, so far, my plan is to head to the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and walk at the park on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday -- weather permitting. Do you have any goals or plans for the week ahead?

Let your Spark shine!

I've been way out of the loop, for over a year, and managed in that time to gain 20 pounds rather than lose any. I'm hoping that I can turn that around this year. Having to work through depression, unemployment (but I have an inheritance to keep me above the no money line) and grief (Lost my Dad last June and whole life got pretty torn up and mixed around dealing with that), but I also have plenty of free time right now to figure out how to get myself back on track while I job hunt and do blog stuff and minor graphic art to sell online. Just restarted yesterday, so we'll see how this goes.

WHYNOT- like you the holidays really did a number on my weight. I gained 5 pounds over Christmas break. I also would like to get back into a regular workout routine. I was doing great over the summer and then school started again (I'm a substitute teacher) and I just stopped working out...even on days I didn't get called in.
I'm setting smaller weight loss goals. 5 pound by the 2nt week of February when I go to a conference with my husband. Another 5 by spring break. Not sure after that. I also need to get back into eating healthy again. need to watch the fat grams and measure/weigh my food. I also want to get in the 5 a day on fruits/veggies. I don't know why I have such a problem with this. I love veggies.
I just need to be more focused on my goals and what I put in my mouth.

Also I need to make sure I get in my 10,000 plus steps a day. I want a big spark streak going on that one!

KALANTHA, it is mighty cold here today, too. (Northern MA, on NH border).

I put away a lot of Christmas stuff last weekend, hope to get to the rest of it this weekend. (I work a second job, so don't have much time during the week.)

Yay for getting a good workout, despite the pool problems. I only had one person show up for the water aerobics class (I teach it) last night, because of the cold weather, but we worked hard and had fun.

All those New Years resolution folks are keeping my gym crowded, too. I had to use a different recumbent bike because "my" bikes were all in use. (The Espresso bike feels awkward and uncomfortable to me and I have to turn the dizzy-making graphics off. I prefer the Precor bikes.)

See my other post with my goals. What are yours?
