Gini - I am SO proud of you!! (really I am) It's not about perfection - & as Raylin says a lot - we ARE alllowed to LIVE. That means having something we really like sometimes, ya know? But learning to rein it in a little is the key. I call it "damage control". lol

Again - good for you!!

Today was my DH's birthday dinner. He wanted Chinese and a mousse cake. Like a fool I indulged too. I must say that compared to how I would normally have loaded my full size plate, my luncheon plate with a few things on it was a surprise even to me. The mousse cake, well, I had a normal sozed serving, but again, I only had 1 piece whereas I would usually have had 2. There is lots of both leftover but I am done. I have had my thrill and I am done. My satisfaction today comes from tracking. In the past, when I ate too much or some high calorie foods, I would not track for a few days that would turn into a few weeks.
So I guess I am saying that although I am over my range I did well. I am learning moderation and that is the best lesson I could be learning.

Absolutely Jenn, "if you bite it - you write it!"

All those "smidges" and "tastes" really add up!

We cannot fix what we do not know. I would eat the turkey liver and not count it until my friend asked me why I didn't track it.
So I went home and logged it in emoticon 140 calories!!

Tracking/logging your foods is the only "weigh" to lose!

Have been studying my charts & graphs today. The only commonality I see during my times of weight "upswing", is that I am NOT TRACKING REGULARLY. (so who know WHAT THE HECK I was doing!? lol) But yeah - I'm trying to figure out why I haven't gained weight lately, & that's all I'm coming up with over a 6 year period. Yes, I see some stupendous eating... but only on the days I tracked. Was I eating like that on all those days I skipped also? Probably some of them. But I find it noteworthy that I gain weight when I don't track.

As somebody I know (?) says, "You BITE IT, you WRITE IT!"

I thought of doing exactly what you are doing, but then after some consideration, I veered off into medical office work. Seemed interesting to me. But I've seen a few medical offices where all they really asked for (besides experience - whine), was Word & Excel skills. We actually get a 5 week course at the end of this semester that is Word 07 for medical professionals. I don't know if there is actually a special Word FOR that, or if it's just Word 07 as it applies to what we are doing. But I am glad to be taking it, as I've never gotten very in depth with Word, especially the jump it seemed to make between 2003 & 2007 - good grief. My niece, as you probably do also, knows all the functions & tricks with it. When she was helping me edit my dad's obituary last year, she'd be telling me stuff & I'd be like, "Okaaay... sure" lol

It's like 48 degrees here today, but guess that's still pretty chilly - I'm still cold - my space heater hasn't warmed up my office in the garage yet.

Hoping to to get my car fixed today - Hubby thinks they are warrantying the radiator, so here's hoping. But he still has to pull it off & take it to NAPA & then put it back on. That man has saved us many thousands of dollars, being able to work on cars. Let us tell our daughters on the subject of husband finding - let them be faithful, loving, good with children, & ABLE TO WORK ON CARS!!!! heeheehee

laters all - Jenn

we had a great dinner tonight at tucci. I had Cioppino Italian Fish Stew of Mussels, Clams, Prawns, Salmon,White Fish, Scallop, Tomatoes & Wine Sauce,
served with Grilled 2 pieces of Ciabatta but i only ate 1. and a house salad for dinner and then for desert i had vanilla bean Gelato. For drinks i stuck with water and ice tea.

I went back to school in Dec of this yr so that I could brush up on my office skills and to upgrade my comp skills. I have taken Word and Excel before but that was back in 2000. I think i used Word more then Excel so i was pretty rusty with the program. I have finished Word 07 and just finished the last ch in Excel so this coming week will be taking the last excel test and then it is on to access. I still have outlook, and powerpoint to do and then i am done with the comp skills part.

I would like to be able to get back into the workforce soon. Maybe doing either Office jobs or having a job where i am helping and or taken care of other people.

Carrie - I just went back to school this semester & am working my hiney off. What are you studying, & is it new to you, or have you been at it awhile? I myself am trying to acquire some new job skills in a Medical Front Office program.

RaylinS- My hibernation buddy. lol. I've done a superb job of it this week. At least I was getting out for a little walk between studying when it was warmer. I haven't even registered as "sedentary" on my pedometer steps this week, between the ice and coursework! Just study & freeze & eat. That was my week. And even now I should be studying. People would think I study an awful lot, but I seem to have adult onset ADD or something - get alot of goofing off done sometimes.

Hey Carrie!

Your dad only has a birthday one day a year - do your best but remember to celebrate while you still have him!

Tomorrow get back on track and watch that sodium! Flush yourself with water and eat those freggies and the scale will start moving in the right direction.

Never doubt it - you CAN do it!

WTG Carrie!

School is very challenging. I'm sorry you needed Excedrin but glad you are taking care of yourself!

This is a 'rest of your life' lifestyle change. I know I have weeks that I just don't do my exercising - life must go on.

You are doing great!!

Well - wierd thing - my weight is creeping down, but according to my numbers the last couple of months. it shouldn't be. (!?) Nor should I have maintained the month of December & half of January. NO WAY, ok. I've never had stress cause me to lose wieght before - not sure if that's the case now or what. I don't feel "ill"... except at times from anxiety. I can't remember if I posted it on this team, but I just started school last week - my first time EVER in college & it's almost giving me anxiety attacks at times. (mini attacks?? like NOT palpitations or sweating - not that kind of attack - just the feel horrible kind for short periods of time) Still - my numbers have been to outbalanced to have maintained the last 2 months, let alone lost! Let's ADD some anxiety.
They have free counseling at the school - just have to remember to call them & make an appt - not to mention, I'm practically afraid to do anything but study... but at the same time, keep procrastinating with it, which makes the anxiety worse.

I am glad to learn you are planning to stay with us - we have a decent track record for losing weight here.

I am not sure this will work - but have you ever tried putting a workout dvd on and letting your 2YO "play" with you?

You might just be surprised and it would definitely make the time go faster!

Hugs,
Linda

Oh no - this is one team I want to keep for sure! Top pick. It is one I'll use possibly most, as it corresponds with my calorie "records" that I already keep.

My other teams are "special interest" only. I just joined a "challenge" team because I have an old friend on there that I used to talk to on here almost when I first joined Sparkpeople - back in the day - lol. Then I was like "challenge"? Who am I kidding? It's a challenge to get off my a** lately. Last time I posted a "goal" with a "plan" even - a couple of weeks ago - I only lasted about a week with it. Same reason I don't do the whole "resolutions" thing. I'm more of a "one day at a time" gal myself. I think my adductors are healing & when the baby leaves & the weather warms up - boy I'll get after it - hahaha. (Let's see how much I have to study) Also, days when DD does not work, are worse than days when I'm actually babysitting. She's having to find a daycare with me going to school, & I have high hopes she'll put her there even on her days off. (oh pleeeeze)

ok - babble babble babble.

I've technically HAD dinner all ready - got out in the cold for a few minutes in the car & got my fill of THAT for the night. Just me & a well napped baby here now - who is mostly playing with toys & occupying herself (lol) - peaceful - no need for stress eating - lol. If only life could stay like this.

You don't have to post anything you are not comfortable with.

As a "leader" and one that has reached goal weight, I feel obligated to share my information even when embarrassing to me.

We are all human and at times of stress, I do not make smart choices. Plus this 59 year old body yearns to hibernate and take with me as many jars of peanut butter as possible!

This is why I am always saying, this is a One day at a time, Rest of my life journey - I have the rest of my life to perfect this lifestyle change. You do too.

Posting or not - it is more important to be true to yourself. No one here will judge you.

While I would hate to lose you as a member, I meant what I said on your blog. Whittle down your teams until you feel comfortable. If we are cut out, we will understand. Later if you change your mind, we will gladly take you back as a member. No pressures here.

We are all trying to accomplish the same thing - arrive at a healthy weight and maintain it.

Yeah & I seem to be less resistant to the cold as I "age" ahem. Have never been good with the extreme Texas heat & always longing for winter, but I'm not liking this 6 day super cold spell. They said 41 today, & now only 38. wwwwhiiiine....said in a Shiver.

Found out baby is going to Daddy's tomorrow via DAYCARE! yippie. Then got reminded I have a birthday party wiping out most of my day Saturday. Was looking forward to the party, but had forgotten about it. Now I'm wanting every available minute to do the things I've been trying to get done all week. Glad my first class isn't until the 22nd.

BTW - I have still be tracking my calorie deficits on excel, but too embarrassed to post some of them. (not to mention I keep forgetting)

laters all - happy counting - lol - Think WAARRRRRMMMM

Perhaps you need to tell MOTHER to stop the texting and take care of the 2YO?

Only you can enforce it by standing up to your daughter.

Other than that, you are not alone. Winter is a rough time to stay on track. I too am struggling and I don't have a 2YO underfoot. It's cold and I want to eat and hibernate.

*sigh* Spring is supposedly just around the corner.

Hey there. Just checking in. Have been struggling with my diet & exercise the last few months. Miraculously, I haven't gained any significant weight. (like ANY?) Maybe I've lost muscle & gained fat? Don't know, but I'm still wearing the same clothes & they aren't a whole lot snugger - except when I binge on salt which is real regular on weekends. This cold weather is getting to me this year. We usually don't have this many days in a row of frigid weather. And also, now with the baby here every other week, I tend to go on "brain-freeze" anyway. I've been frozen in position in front of my computer for DAYS. (Maybe I'm hiding from my torn up house?? Flylady has some important points about what clutter & mess do to your BRAIN!) Going to try to emerge from my house today - heat wave - 41 they SAY. Will have to take 2 yo with me. Whine.

I'm curtailing my eating when I can. Trying to taper it off....AGAIN. Weekend starts tomorrow - oh no.

But the exercise is a problem. Seems like my house is occupied ALL THE TIME & I can't think straight & just don't have the "want to", to go in my room & SHUT THE DOOR & sweat to a video tape/DVD. Not to mention, the door will open during this time & the 2 yo will enter, unattended by her MOTHER, who is oblivious while texting in the other room. The little one will be leaving for a week to her Dad's tomorrow night, but at the end of next week, about the time she is coming back, I am starting school. Trying to declutter & organize a bit before that.

(Oh yes, & again/still, the finances are a HUGE distraction from motivation - like staring at Quicken 24/7 will make money appear)

Jenn

It's really easy - SP is very user friendly.

From your "edit my page" you just need to browse your computer and click on upload. If you have "windows" most of your pictures will be in "My Pictures" in My Documents.

Don't laugh Jenn, you actually had a great idea with the green beans. When you get home and are starving just open a can of green beans, drain them and eat them right out of the can. 70 callories a can beats 700 in snack crackers.
One thing I do is when I take that first bite I think to myself "I'm full" and I keep thinking that after every bite and about half way through I usually feel full and take the rest for lunch the next day.
You will get through this stress.

Thanks you guys - I know I'll eventually pull out of this, but am beginning to wonder "WHEN" ok. Still doing badly. It's been WEEKS. Yesterday I just couldn't stop snacking - like a chain smoker, only with snack crackers. Probably a bit of stress. Holidays - no money - starting school next month which is totally new for me. As far as I know I did really well on the 2 exams I took Monday though, so I'm glad that is overwith. But then the next day - oink oink OINK. Probably not being able to afford healthy food - AGAIN - is contributing, as well as the cold & not getting out as much. I'm going to try to at LEAST walk the dog around the block today. I'll put her little coat on her if have to.

I wrote my simple health goals down this morning for today.

Enough sleep - Check
Drink all my water - Already have my pitcher filled in the kitchen
Exercise 10-15 minutes
STAY IN CALORIE RANGE.... (wish me luck...whine) Having spaghetti tonight, it is my Weakness, but I will TRY to be careful with my portions. Maybe I'll eat a can of green beans first - hahaha. (?)

Hang in there, Jenn! I had two weeks during the month of November where I ate horribly and didn't exercise at all. I finally got back on track and am doing okay. You will too!

Jenn, my weight bounced all over the place on the 'weigh' down and still does! We are only human and we have to consume food to survive.

Cut yourself some slack. You might regain a couple of pounds but you will get them off again.

You only fail when you quit.

Good job, Janet! That is great!

I on the other hand am having a relapse or something. Can't seem to get back on track. It has NOT been pretty. A real Pig-Fest - & I've gotten very discouraged. Can FEEL the fat coming back.
I've got to go the the college tomorrow & take 2 credit by exams tests - hopefully fairly simple ones - but stressful nonetheless because I haven't taken a test in a LOOONGGG TIIIIME. This will all cut me short on time to exercise also.

Yesterday I discovered a way to increase my overall STEPS though! Outdoor Christmas decorations!! (laced with a trip to a couple of stores for more lights) lol

Just a quick share!

Last night my DH and I received a last minute invite out to dinner! As I was hurriedly getting ready and feeling some stress, I suddenly realized the absence of a stress I usually have felt over the years! I did NOT feel fat and I actually had an outfit that I fit into and felt good in!!!

That feeling is better than all the chocolate in the World! NEVER GIVE UP! The results of your efforts will pay off in ways you can't even imagine!

You are not alone! I gained back the weight I lost in November, but I'm moving on. Today marks a new week and December is coming up. My plan for today is to track 100% of what I eat and to exercise when I get home. Getting back on track!!!

I am glad to see you taking the holiday weight gains in stride. I was not happy to see a weight gain - but I was happy to indulge my "naughty" self for a change. I spent 2 days tapering off and managed to drop 2 of the 4 lbs.
(2 lbs were before Thanksgiving)

Have no regrets - this is a lifestyle change. The only important thing to remember is "GET BACK ON TRACK"

That's what "skinny" and "normal" people do and we are learning how to become normal people!

YES! The Calorie Differential Challenge works!

Thanks everyone for being so supportive! We will all get through this holiday season the best we can, and I look forward to getting back on track quickly.

One thing is for sure...when I tracked my calorie differential, I definitely saw a difference and lost weight. There is hope!

lol - I was really Getting Back on Track this week... then with all my grocery list etc I've been doing, suddenly... the wires MET in the middle of the light bulb in my head & I thought about T-H-U-R-S-D-A-Y. I think what I might do - to destress a bit on Thur, is to put in a "preliminary" intake the night before, so there won't be so much tracking to do. I'm pretty sure I'll eat too much of some things - I wait all year for my stuffing, ok. And it's something that I cook that my daughter actually EATS, which makes it doubly enjoyable for me - ha.

I do what I can in the meantime - at the moment that means light lunch & a NAP. Got up at 6:30 this morning, so I could get to the college for registration, then remembered I had to CALL first & make an appt with one particular lady - glad she got me in this morning anyway, so I'm all registered. Now I just have to PAY for it & buy books - lol. Didn't get my financial aid app in early enough, but I'm pretty certain I can get it & it will reimburse me later.

Hey though - I DID check out the Jogging Track at the college. I walked around part of it, as I had on tennis shoes, but otherwise street clothes, lol. But I'm working on my steps today so far...but right now I need the naaaaap. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Lindar, I'm with you!!! I have been trying not to be discouraged, but it seems since we recently had a death in the family... I"m eating things I can't track. Foods that are brought in by others....family being in town and going out to restaurants that don't have nutritional info. etc..
I just try to keep it simple when looking at menus. tossed in a cream sauce...nope; Fried Shrimp.(yes)..NO I know better.... but I wanted it. LOL. Settled for seared grouper and steamed veggies.. no rice, no potatoes. Just thinking that through has been about the best I can do. And I was soo excited to get started on the Cal Diff tracking ... but hasn't happened for me in a week or 2...With the holidays coming, it might be harder to track every bite to get that Cal Diff number.. but as long as you are mindfully eating and keeping up with your other goals......then we'll be back to tracking Cal Diffs in no time...... Sighhh...Last week and this week have been more difficult for me. For the most part, I am maintaining my exercise, but having a hard time keeping up with the food tracking.

Unfortunately, that means I don't have numbers to post for the calorie deficit. Sorry team!

This time of year is definitely tough, but I am hanging in there so far.

WTG on a deficit daily! Small deficits all add up to great losses!!

Sometimes you just have to eat whatever it is your body is calling for - life does go on! Again, WTG!!

I hope you had a great walk!

What a week this is - different from last week, but not totally. Alot of stress - alot of DESK SITTING. sigh. Not alot of steps or exercise - is driving me up the wall. But I finally got my project (hopefully) completed last night & after this afternoon when I turn it in, THAT pressure will be somewhat relieved. Maybe.

But this week I HAVE -so far - stayed in my calorie range, & stayed in a deficit daily, albeit Small. Yesterday my food choices weren't the best - COMFORT FOOD, ok, but I made these CHOICES & didn't totally overdo it. Not a healthy eating day, but it is behind me. I actually had a Snickers bar in the afternoon! Do you know how long it's been since I had a candy bar?! It was heavenly & it hit the spot & made me feel BETTER. (have been very tired & stressed & self-pitying to boot) I almost never indulge like that, & wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but by golly, it HIT THE SPOT. As compared to ramsacking the kitchen, picking at this & that, when what I REALLY wanted was S-U-G-A-R. ONCE in several months is ok for me.
I probably shouldn't mention the fried chicken thigh I had for dinner, huh. ahem. I gave 1/2 to 2/3 of the skin to my dogs, ok. But again, it was fast - it was good - & it hit the spot.

Now today - I'm about to lace up my tennies & get out & walk before the house wakes up. Didn't sleep well again, so finally got up about 6. I had just Whacked my husband for snoring, in my frustration. Decided I better go let him sleep...haha.

ok - that's my blabbing for today.

laters - Jenn

This is a One Day At A Time program - and also a Rest Of Your Life program.

One day does not a failure make. We can only fail if we give up.

Never never never give up on yourself.

Yes, I rid myself of 90+ pounds (I hate to say lost because when you lose something you want to find it again!) - this does not make me a paragon of virtue - I am still human and I cannot be trusted with cookies of any type! I am dangerous around a jar of peanut butter!

Every meal you get to choose what to do. Every day you get to choose what to do. Slowly, the choices start getting better. But we are human and we will give in to temptations.

Here's the secret to a successful program:

Get back on track as soon as you can.

Hi Kelly - take heart - as people told me the other day - it's just one day. And I know weigh in is tomorrow - I visited your Sparkpage & saw your entry. Mind is tomorrow also. I've had many MANY bad weigh ins - I'm not minimizing it - I hate it too. But you WILL have good ones in the future.
My calories were WAY over yours just yesterday. Yep - I'd call it a binge alright. But I got it out of my system.
You don't look like you've been on Sparkpeople for a terribly long time. When you feel like, maybe look for some articles on ideas for what to order when eating out - healthier choices. I know it's hard anyways. I just noticed on your food log that you'd done alot of eating out, which can make it hard to stay in your calorie range, unless extreme caution is used. My dear husband actually invited me out to eat this evening, & as spastic as I'm getting about losing weight I told him "nooooo - wait a few days until I get over yesterday's BINGE!" LOL

Anyways, I don't know if I'm being much help - but wanted to say "I've been there", & as disheartening & to me myself "annoying" at times, to go way over on my calories, you can recover from it. Just go back to HEALTHY eating tomorrow. NOT STARVING ok, to try to recreate a calorie deficit.

Ok I'm toddling off to bed soon.

goodnight - Jennifer

Thanks Linda :) Yeah, we did get out for a lap around the block with the stroller - but had my little old dog in tow also, so it wasn't far & wasn't fast - lol. But then yesterday, we went to the park & I feel like I got "some" kind of exercise pushing the swing endlessly & picking her up over my head to get her onto things & into the swing, etc etc.

I am OFF TODAY... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - that's hysterical laughter. I went out & walked for a full 60 mins. First time I've managed to make the whole 60 mins in years! Hey - after 5 days off, my muscles were ready!

Unfortunately, I woke up with a THUMPER of a headache - was awful - seems like my neck is strained (maybe the swinging plus stress) - but think the new meds have something to do with it too. Am thinking about dropping them, but we'll see. I know side effects sometimes wear off after while. The new meds are for stress, but I'm beginning to wonder if I "really" needed medication to begin with. Thought I'd give it a try - have been through alot this year - caring for my Dad & then him dying, the royal pain in the butt that his "simple" little estate turned out to be, my daughter & grandbaby moving in with us in Jan, major financial stress (bankruptcy in the works, ok), a different daughter splitting off from the family (her choice), etc & blah blah. Maybe I'm stronger than I would think, ya know. They say what doesn't KILL YA, makes you stronger. (but can give you ulcers in the process! I almost had them! Thus my thoughts of a little "help" in controlling some of my worrying if nothing else.)

All in all, I'm having a good day today - since the PAIN SUBSIDED - ha??

Jenn

Hi Jenn,

Depending on the weather, maybe you can take a walk with your granddaughter? Pushing the stroller will be burning extra calories! Plus, the fresh air can help clear a foggy head when you are tired from lack of sleep.

Hang in there today!

Drinking water helps me to resist the temptation.

I surprised myself yesterday by telling DH who was hungry before dinner time to go and drink a glass of water while waiting for me to finish our meal. He did it! emoticon

Good luck with your company! Enjoy the gathering!

All any of us can do is to do the best we can.

I find some deep breathing helps me to resist temptations - most of the time.

But like you, I am human and I don't always resist hard enough.

What got me through the holidays the first year was all the clothing I had hanging on my closet door. I was determined to get into everything I had purchased and this year I got into the last 2 items.

I would look at the various foods - and nothing was worth falling off the wagon.

Just do the best you can - we will still love you!

I swing between doing very well and doing very poorly. "Life" intervenes and off the track I go. This week I am doing very well with eating and exercise. However, we have company coming Thursday and the temptations to eat 'company' food will arise again. If I can eat small and healthy when company is here, I will achieve a small victory.

Venting is good!

I started this week with a huge excess of calories yesterday - it happens.

Just do the best you can and try to get back on track as soon as you can.

Marching in place 10+ minutes = cardio

Try doing any ST every time you use the bathroom - it all adds up.

Keep coming back and keep on trying!

***VENT WARNING***

Seems like every time I come on this thread I'm whining. Sorry. Guess when I'm NOT having a hard time, I'm pretty much "holding my own" & don't need support as much. (duh)

Having a very bad start to my week. (Number & weight loss wise) Had a nice time at church yesterday - was our pastor's 30th anniversary pastoring the church. But the lunch after blew me out of the water. It could have been worse - could have been pizza or something. But I still really needed to NOT eat for the REST of the day! Oh yeah, right. AND, I didn't get any exercise & starting my week with no deficit makes the week seem extra daunting. Especially since apparently I'm not going to get any exercise TODAY EITHER. I'm babysitting my 2 year old granddaughter, PLUS started some new meds yesterday - don't know if it was that or combined with DH's SNORING, but I didn't get NEAR enough sleep last night, so am tired & have a headache, & don't know if I could exercise if I DID get a chance. DH asked me a few mins ago if he could watch the baby while I got a nap. Perfect! IF HE'D ASKED ME 30 MINS BEFORE!! BEFORE I drank the cup of COFFEE & BEFORE I got my lunch ready. So I'm letting him watch her so I could at least eat my sandwich in peace. If my DD gets home before 7 pm tonight, maybe I can at least get out & walk around the block - it'll be dark, but oh well. It still won't exactly be cardio. (Oh - I took the day off Saturday too due to a heavy workout on Fri & a possible impending groin pull) So you see the cycle I'm getting in. And I had a weight loss goal, of which I am now FOUR pounds BEHIND. No way to make it up. May be next year before I accomplish this now, it's getting too late in the year. I could just SCREAM. (yeah yeah - feel like the tired whiney 2 yo I'm watching)

Thank you so much, Linda, for your valuable info.

I'm slowly resuming my fitness exercise, with my bad foot it is not that easy to find workouts that won't hurt: water aerobics is great on that regard.
Imagine, I couldn't walk at all for two months!! Yet, I am doing better and better every day, and could sure use some variety in my workouts.

I had never asked the experts. I had never thought of asking them--silly me.

I thought my carbs and proteins were not high but just okay, but I am going to examine that more carefully. Thanks for pointing it out to my attention!

Hey MIKIIO!

According to Spark, we should never go above 1000 for our deficit/differential. There are many articles that will pop up on a Spark Search for Calorie Deficit.

That said, I think maybe you are quite off on your calories for the exercise videos. WATP averages 100-125 per 15 minute mile and they are low/no-impact.

Using an exercise video should be burning at least as much as water aerobics I would think. Have you asked at the Fitness & Exercise forum (asking the experts)?
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageb
oa
rd_topics.asp?imboard=6

They helped me get off my 2nd plateau so I know they can help anyone who asks. (My first plateau was helped by adding evening cardio.)

Other than that, your carbs and proteins are below average - is there a special reason you are not staying in range? The brain only uses carbs so they are needed and I believe the muscles use the protein? Both are really important. I could be wrong, but maybe your body thinks it is starving from too few carbs & proteins? This can be asked at the Nutrition & Diet forum

Hello teammates,

I have a question (a few, actually).

My BMI is 1,641 (I'm 41, 5"4), and I am not sure I have been recently eating enough for what I am actually burning daily.
My tracker is not hidden (don't look at yesterday, it was one of this very strange day), but you can see what I consume and what I burn on the Calorie Differential Challenge--it might give you a better idea.

1)Is there a daily maximum deficit--I don't want to be counterproductive?

2)Taking into account my BMI, what would you consider to be my calorie range?
I am having a hard time to figure out what my calorie range should be to lose weight--or at least to not gain extra pounds, but on the top of everything what is my healthy calorie range.

I'm a very sloooow loser due to my underactive thyroid condition; but I am fine with that now.
Even if I have been having a weekly deficit superior to 3,500, my weight loss is never a pound, but a few grams a week: part of that is due to my condition aforementioned, yet it might also be due to the fact I don't really know my numbers.

3)If someone has the time (and the patience), could you check my Nutrition/Fitness trackers on my SP page, and see what I could/should improve?

emoticon for your help!

WAAAAHH!!! My diet has been a TRAIN-WRECK this week. Big family long distance drama.... CRRRRAASH went Jenn's diet. Up...down....WAY UP...down...UP AGAIN... Ok - that's more like a roller coaster. Still not good. sigh. I'm SO hoping to go renew my membership at the city rec center tomorrow & be able to use their elliptical & bike at least once a week. Especially tomorrow - need to seriously work off what I ate today. The problem is see, is I'm having car trouble. RATS. Hopefully I can at least do better on my eating tomorrow!

This question should really be posted in the Expert's Fitness Forum - we are asked to refer this type question to them. You can reach the Fitness & Exercise Message Board here:

Many sparkers use HRM's - Heart Rate Monitors. I tried a couple but felt they were inconsistent for me and I returned them.

I can say that using the estimates from the SP Fitness Tracker has enabled me to lose 90 pounds so for me the number was apparently close enough.

I can also tell you that I struggled with my weight last winter and when I looked in the Report for my Calorie Differential over the 4 months - I clearly was eating more than I was burning.

Are you losing weight using the estimates?

Please come back and tell us what the experts advised you.

Good Luck!

I have a question. How do we know we are burning the same amount of calories the tracker says we are? Is there a accurate way to figure how many we burn?
I was wondering if there was a good device that will tell us total calories burned for a day. Like our pedometers tell us how many steps we take a day.. those are all over the place. But fairly simple to know if its accurate.. just count your steps.. it still takes a little to find a good one..
I just don't have a lot of faith in the presumed cals burned by the tracker. I work up a great sweat so I feel good about my work outs but I'd like to be sure of what I'm doing.
Any ideas???

Just make a commitment to do things as right as possible as much as you can

Well,I'm just patting myself on the back that I'm actually getting the number to go DOWN.

That downward trend may be coming to a screeching halt however - whine & sigh. I have a pulled ummm... don't know if it's adductor or abductor. The left one is BAD, the right one is threatening. These big Mon morning walks did me in. (overdid it) Of course they weren't as far as I "used" to walk, but since walking doesn't burn calories really fast, I tried to go longer. (like 55 mins, about 3 1/2 miles) I don't know how many calories I'll be able to burn while babying my legs, nor how long they will take to heal. I know there are other exercises - like swimming - but I think of trying to get down the steps....oh boy. And you still use your legs, even in the pool.

ok got to get busy now - if I can't exercise, I'd better get alot of other things done in my down time.

Well, even though I keep POOPING OUT on the Calorie Deficit challenge EVERY week, I am happy to report that over the last 3 weeks, I have gone over LESS each week. (I keep a spreadsheet weekly of my own) I am hoping this week for an actual DEFICIT, ok. Gee whiz. And here Saturday is my husband family reunion. I'm going to have to bring a VEGGIE TRAY & stay out of the crazy stuff. Not to mention run around & chase kids or something. sigh.

Here's my (awful) weekly numbers from the last several weeks. Has gotten so out of hand some days, that I keep just giving up posting. (for several weeks after my Dad died in May, I wasn't keeping accurate records, let alone exercising, but my first week back was:

Threw (pulled, whatever) my back out today, which royally ticks me off. I had been trying really hard to be more active. Perhaps overdid a little of some things. (in the pool for instance - hadn't done that in a LONG time & was really "goin' at it". Then have been sitting alot in a low, soft chair in my room, going through papers & pictures & stuff. Too much bending. Gee it's great bein' old! harhar This too shall heal.

Yes! It is an improvement!

Eating the food comes naturally, logging it in takes commitment. I am proud of you for logging in everything that passed your lips.

You are now on the road to reaching your goal weight. Logging it all in is the secret to a successful journey.

You are making progress! WooHoo!!

Thanks Raylin.

I actually got a calorie deficit 2 days this week, Wed & Thur.

But then last night was my son's (19) birthday party, which I really hadn't been "up for", but reached deep & made myself do the preps. He & his friends had a good time - I went to bed after while & DH stayed up til they left. But due to a number of reasons, I went into "LETTER FLY" mode. (Let her fly) Would you like to KNOW how many calories I ATE yesterday!!!???? See, I DID do something different than I've been doing the last 6 mo to a year. I ate whatever & however much I wanted, but today I LOGGED IT. I had completely given up most days. So. I GUESS that is an improvement??

Ok...here it is.... 4866 calories yesterday.

As I kept remembering things, I was wondering if I was going to hit 6000.

I credit this complete blowout to stress, grief, having a party I didn't Really want to have in the first place - house full of teenagers - (ok if one is not in the emotional state I've been in) - was ok - but my only outlet was FOOD, ok. Kept the crazies at bay? Talk about emotional eating! Oh yes - & HABIT. I haven't REALLY been trying, for any extended periods of time, to REALLY control my eating for like over a YEAR. It's like - sometimes I do - sometimes I don't - whatever....

So - today is a new day & here I go. Not beating myself up over yesterday - today has enough stress of it's own.

Allow yourself time to grieve.

One day at a time works for practically everything in life.

I find I do better in this heat when I sip water all day long.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for all the kind words. My Dad has been gone a month today now. Hard to believe. And I'm dealing with the aftermath and trying to find a normal life to return to. Oh - wait - my life wasn't Normal before!! sigh.

Nevertheless - Not sure how I'm going to get my eating back under control, the way I'm feeling. I was doing good yesterday, but wasn't feeling well all day & then had to go out in the Texas 96 degree heat & felt even worse. (no good A.C. in my car) By the time I came home & still had a sink full of dirty dishes in the sink, I wasn't fit to make dinneer, so had my husband go over & get Taco Bueno! Then I layed around like a dying lump the rest of the night. Alas, another day's nutrition and weight loss gone by the way. I'm not feeling great today either, but MAYbe I can stay inside after I take my poor little dog around the block here shortly.

I am very sorry for your loss.

I hope he wasn't in a lot of pain. It is a day I know that I too must face in the future. It never gets easier.

May it help to know that others do care.

Love,
Linda

Am not up to much now - as far as joining challenges etc. My Daddy passed away tonight. I've been helping take care of him for 2 1/2 years, & this is leaving a large hole in my life & in my heart.

Will rejoin soon with the challenges etc. Jennifer

Thanks Raylynn - just got the word from my Dad's doctor today that it is time for me to at least have a talk with the hospice people. This was not a shock or surprise, but definately painful to finally have to deal with. I had asked them about it several weeks ago when he came home from the hospital, but they wanted to give him a few weeks & see how he did.

I didn't do any large amounts of stress eating over it, but I definately didn't have it in me to exercise either. On the other hand, I was tired when I first woke up for some reason. I did get 2 hour nap this afternoon though, & that seemed to help ALOT.

Seem to be having alot of trouble getting back on track after this weekend. I know it's the old "all or nothing" mentality. I was doing SO good last week, Sun-Thur, & then KERPLOW!! And now my "numbers" are all messed up, especially for THIS week - like beyond repair. I know I can salvage the rest of the days, but I won't be able to "undo" the last few days... sigh.

I'll try to make a plan for tomorrow before I go to bed, but it's getting SO late already, sigh.

Night all - Jenn

Oh yes - very cool!
Just like the little calendar I used to keep, only I'd have a total at the end of the week for calories burned, & an average for calories consumed. Guess I could print it out at the end, & tally that in to the side! Yes, I like it!

As you all know Spark People is always working to bring us new tools to help us manage our life style and achieve our goals. I just noticed this morning a new offering on my Start page. It is called the SparkSummary Calendar. It is great! It shows you your calories eaten, fitness minutes, strength training and weigh-ins for each day of the month at a glance!!! It gave me a new perspective on what I've been doing for the last month and made it very clear the areas I would like to put some additional focus on. Check it out!!! :) Janet

All you can do is the best you can. When life gets in the way, we just keep on wading through it.

Been there, done that, understand completely!

I hope better days are coming for you. For now just take care of your 93 yo dad and yourself!

Hugs,
Linda

Thanks Linda! I read your advice he other day & thought it was good, but needed to go back over it & try some of it. Then yesterday - my 93 yo Dad lands in the hospital, & I'm having to oversee that. (I say "oversee that" but anyone with an elderly parent they care for know how involved it is. To have ANY close family in the hospital is very involved actually - kind of wipes out anything else you thought you were doing. LOL?) Don't even ASK what I'm eating. Some good - a good bit bad. Getting a good bit of walking in though.

Got to get some sleep & get back to the hospital early.
Night - Jenn

I know all about money woes!

I do not do salads and they are probably more expensive than vegetables. You should be able to buy a 1 lb bag of mixed vegetables for about a dollar and that is about 5 portions if memory serves - let's say 4 just in case.

If you eat one portion of vegetables daily, that is healthier than none. Bread does have it's place in your diet/meal plan. But you can eat an open sandwich on one slice of bread instead of making a closed sandwich with two slices. Eat a portion of vegetables with this open sandwich.

Fruits are expensive too - but nothing is cheaper than apples and bananas. A typical apple is 2 portions or more and a large banana is also 2 servings. Now we have you eating 3+ freggies daily. Can you eat another portion of mixed vegetables for dinner to round out your freggies for the day?

Meat is probably the most expensive part of your meals - how about peanut butter as your main protein? No cholesterol and great fiber!

I know how stressed you are, but a little careful planning could help you over this hurdle. Do you live in an area with a "soup kitchen"? We have one about 25 miles away but they will feed you free and you get a meat, a sweet, a bread and 1 or 2 veggies in the meal. Contact your local churches to see if one of them has anything like a meals on wheels to assist people in financial need. You might be surprised.

Good luck to you!
Love,
Linda

Having a rough time getting back on track here. Think one of the big reasons is financial stress. And not just the stress, but lets say "dire straights" financially, so we're taking what food we can get in efforts to put together our mortgage payment. So, we end up with alot of breads, sweet rolls, junk junk junk. A carboholic like me can only stand so much junk set in front of her, (with no healthy food in the house), without going on a complete binge. Which is where I've been for several days. May have to borrow a couple of dollars from my Dad & buy one salad or something - ummm- a VEGETABLE - it's been awhile - sigh.
