Do plan your menu for 2 weeks, then make up an ingredient list according to the menus,
THEN GO THROUGH YOUR PANTRY AND FRIDGE and cross off those items you already have....... What you have left is your shopping list.

Just my little tip.

Here is another one..... keep some paper on your fridge on close to your work area. When you notice you are running low on an item (soap, a favourite spice, etc), write it on the list. Then on shopping day, take that list with you.

I hate sharing this info but I don't make any type of list! With my job (I work 11-13 hours a day) and running around here, there and everywhere BUT the grocery store on my days off, I unfortunately shop day to day which I know is costing me tons of money! Money that I dont have to be wasting like that. My friend always plans her meals out for the week and then her and her husband go shopping for the week. I've always wanted to try that but then I just start thinking "well if you do that, what if you already have half the items you purchased at home and you're still wasting money?!". I guess I should go through my fridge and pantry and get rid of stuff and see what's left and then make up my menus for the week as well as my shopping list. Has anyone found it lighter on your wallet to plans for more than just one week at a time?

Thanks for the suggestions Tracy. I think there's a farmers market near me for at least part of the year and a Food Basics close by. Not sure that I can afford the Costco membership right now. I loved the soup recipes on the other thread. I also love using my crockpot.

Hi Folks,

My name is Josh and I'm new to the team. I was wondering what stores you are speaking of. I tend to shop at Metro here in Mississauga but I don't think my money is going as far as it could. I know it may not be possible to post names here but if someone could message me I'd appreciate it. I've been to the recipe thread. There are a lot of great recipes there!

8/4/2012 I usually buy for the month. We always make into a store once a week for something. I freeze fresh produce so I have food without extra salt and preservatives. Grapes are cheap right now, so I put a cup of grapes in individual bags and freeze. It's a great treat to eat frozen grapes to cool off or to have frozen grapes in the winter and only 65 healthy calories. We do the same with peaches, nectarines and the like. I have also discovered that it is easier to do quick canning of any thing we have left over from dinner. Like too much spaghetti sauce. Just throw it in a sterilized jar and put it in the pressure cooker for a time and you have ready made sauce for another meal. The great thing about this is you don't eat things you didn't plan on, just to keep it from wasting. The hard part for me is I have 5 adults and no kids in my home. It's harder to deal with the tastes of adults then to deal with picky kids. emoticon

There are a couple of stores that have a discount on the first Tuesday of each month. Now that I am living on a very tight budget, I am shopping on those days. I will check the flyers to see what is on sale so I get the sale price plus the discount of 10 percent at one store and 15 percent at another......

In addition, one of those stores has been having special sales on Fridays. Not sure if this is just for the summer or if it will continue into the fall, but I have gone on one of those Fridays and saves over 40 percent off my grocery bill.

When the fresh veggies are gone, they are gone for the month, unless there is a big sale, such as this past week, another store had dollar days where I could get head of lettuce for $1, or an english long cuc, or whole bunch of celery, even green grapes for $1 a pound, and they are usually never that cheap!!!!

So, sad as it is to say, I do not plan my meals then make up a grocery list. I check the flyers, make up a grocery list and then plan my meals based on what I have in the fridge/freezer.

Anyone else????

Hi Everyone How do you plan your store list, first of all is it for 1 week 2 weeks, or more. I usually plan for 2 weeks and I alway plan for 3 very cheap meals to be included in those 2 weeks such as grilled cheee sandwiches, pancakes. I always list my meals for the 2 weeks and all the ingredients I will need so I will have a good list and will not over spend

How do you shop?

Hugs danlin
