Harvest Fruit Bars

One 6-ounce package diced dried mixed fruit bits
1 cup chopped banana (about 2 medium)
2/3 cup orange juice
1-1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice or ground cinnamon, divided
1-3/4 cups whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
1-1/2 cups Large Flakes Oats or Quicker Oats (uncooked)
1/2 pound (2 sticks) margarine or butter, softened
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Heat oven to 375°F.
In medium bowl, combine dried fruit, banana, orange juice and 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice; set aside.
In medium bowl, combine flour, oats and remaining 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice; mix well. In large bowl, beat margarine and sugar together with electric mixer until creamy. Add oat mixture; beat until crumbly. Reserve 3/4 cup mixture for topping.

Washcloth Easter Bunny

Supplies:
washcloth - a large baby washcloth is ideal
rubber band
two small black pompoms or plastic, movable eyes
one small pink pompom
one medium white pompom
small amount of thin ribbon or yarn
optional: small silk flower

Washcloth Easter Bunny
Instructions:

1. Lay the washcloth on a table. Roll one corner, diagonally, into the middle. Roll the opposite corner in the same way, so that both rolls meet in the middle.

Fold the rolled washcloth in half, as shown in the photo at right.

2. Hold the two sides together and fold the two ends backwards, over the top. Fasten a rubber band around the front area to form the head. Fluff out the two ends to make bunny ears. This photo shows a side view of the bunny so far.

3. Glue the white pompom to the back, to make the bunny's tail.

Glue two small black pompoms in place as eyes. Glue a small pink pompom below the eyes as the nose.

Fasten thin ribbon around the bunny's neck and tie it in a small bow. If desired, glue a small silk flower in the middle of the bow.

4. Your washcloth Easter bunny is finished now. But, wait - where's the Easter egg?

Slip an Easter egg into the open circle at the back of the bunny, behind the ears. You should find that the bunny will hold the Easter egg in place quite well.

Now all you need to do is set your bunny in a hiding place, ready for the Easter egg hunt.

Friendship Box for Valentines Day!

What you'll need:1 empty box, any size
Valentine themed wrapping paper or pink/red construction paper
Pink construction paper
White paper for poem
White craft glue
White ribbon
Scissors

How to make it:Wrap the empty box in wrapping paper or construction paper.
Tie white ribbon around the box and tie into a bow on the top.
Print out the poem below.
Trim the poem and glue the trimmed poem to pink construction paper.
Trim the pink construction paper to give it an even border all the way around.
Glue the poem to the box.

Friendship Box Poem

Inside this fancy little box
I placed a gift so nice
You’ll probably always cherish it
Not even thinking twice

Now even though this box I give
Holds nothing you can touch
I’ve placed inside our friendship
It’s you I like so much!

Tips:You can use any size box you like. If you are doing this as a school project, suggest boxes such as toothpaste, toaster pastries, crayons, toothpicks or cereal bars.
If you don’t have wrapping paper, you can wrap the box in construction paper and decorate with stickers, glitter and sequins.
If giving this gift to or from a boy and prefer alternate colors, try light blue and purple!

Paper Bag Reindeer

What you'll need:Brown paper lunch bag
Medium black pom-pom
White craft glue
Construction paper: black, white and tan/brown
4 jungle bells
Scissors
Red plastic milk jug lid
Glue stick
Gold paint pen
Pattern

How to make it:Use white glue to attach the black pom-pom to the flap of the bag. (See photo.)
Cut out the eyes using the pattern as a guide. You will need two brown/tan eyelids, two white eyes, and two black pupils. Assemble the eyes with a glue stick. Use the glue stick to attach the eyes to the front of the bag above the pom-pom nose. (See photo.)
Cut a strip of black paper with width of the paper bag, about one inch wide. Cut a small piece of black paper for the nametag hanger. Glue the small strip to the center of the larger strip so that it is hanging down.
Use gold paint pen to write "Comet" on the red plastic lid. Glue the lid to the bag, overlapping the small black strip (hanger). (See photo.)
Use a generous amount of white craft glue to attach 4 jingle bells to the black strip (collar). (See photo.)
Trace child's hands onto brown/tan paper and cut out. Use glue stick to attach the hands to the back of the bag as the antlers.

Tips:To make this puppet into Rudolph, use a red pom-pom and write "Rudy" on the plastic lid.
Instead of hand print antlers, you can simply cut simple antlers from brown paper.
You can use large wiggle eyes instead of our pattern if you prefer.

Heart Counting Game

Materials Needed:

• Construction Paper
• Glue or Stickers
Instructions:
Cut larger heart shapes out of construction paper. Cut the hearts in half. On one half of the heart, write a number. On the other half of the heart, place a corresponding amount of smaller hearts (made from construction paper). You can also use stickers instead of cut out hearts. Make as many puzzle pieces as you want. Use these for younger kids to match the correct number of hearts or pictures with the numbers

Soap Crayons

Ingredients:
•1 c Soap flakes

•Food colouring

•2 tb Hot water
Have one large bowl and several small bowls, one for each color. You will also need an ice cube tray with different sections, or containers to act as small molds.

Put soap flakes in a large bowl and drop the hot water into the soap flakes, stirring constantly. The mixture will be extremely thick and hard to stir.

Spoon some of the soap into each of the small bowls and color each separately, adding the color by drops until the soap has the consistency of a very thick paste.

Press spoonfuls of the soap into your molds and set the crayons in a dry place to harden. They should take a few days to a week to dry completely.

When dry, remove from the molds and allow to dry for a few more days before using.

Yield: 20 Crayons

Frosty the Doorstop

Materials
Keyhole-shaped paver (available at many home improvement stores) *
Paintbrush
White and black acrylic paint
Orange modeling clay
Superglue
Fleece
Pipe cleaner
Two 1 1/2-inch pom-poms
Rubber band
Felt
X
Instructions
Rinse off the paver to remove any loose bits of dirt or cement. Paint it white and let it dry. If needed, apply a second coat and let it dry completely.

Lay the paver flat and paint on the eyes, mouth, and buttons. Let the face dry, then mold a clay nose and affix it with superglue (a parent's job).

Cut a fleece scarf (ours measures 1 by 22 inches) and tie it in place. For the earmuffs, bend a 5-inch piece of pipe cleaner into an arc. Superglue the ends to either side of the head and the pom-poms over the ends (a parent's job), then wrap the rubber band around the snowman?s head to hold the earmuffs in place until the glue dries.

To protect indoor floors, superglue a small piece of felt to the base of the snowman.

Butterfly Fun Foam Pencil Toppers

Supplies:

craft fun foam sheets or scraps
paper to make a template
glue
scissors
pencils
black pipe cleaners or chenille stems
sequins, buttons, or other ornaments

Craft Fun Foam Pencil Toppers

Instructions:

1. Take a blank piece of paper and fold it in half. On the fold, draw a heart shape without the point at the bottom (the point extends beyond the fold). Look at the picture of the template shape above to see what this should look like - when you open the heart shape, it should look like a butterfly!

2. Once you are satisfied with the butterfly shape, use it as a template to trace on any color of fun foam. Cut this shape out.

3. Now fold the fun foam butterfly shape in half, and make two small slits close together, in the center, as seen in the picture. This is where your pencil will fit.

4. Decorate the butterfly pencil topper with foam shapes, rhinestones, glitter, sequins or fancy buttons.

5. Insert a pencil through the two slits.

6. Take a black pipe cleaner or chenille stem and cut it in half. Twist around the front of the pencil in the front of the butterfly and make a loop at the tip of the antennas.

Bath Buddies Soap

Ivory Snow detergent (or any other soap flakes)
Liquid food coloring
Water
Vegetable oil

Bowl
String (for soap on a rope)

Pour approximately 3 cups
of soap flakes into the bowl. Add 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water with a few drops of food coloring added to it.

Mix the contents of the bowl with your hands until it becomes the consistency of play dough.

To shape it, take a drop or two of vegetable oil and rub it between the palm of your hands, then shape any way you wish.

If you want to make a soap on a rope, cut a piece of string and tie the ends together. Push the knotted end gently into the your finished shape.

Let the completed soap stand to set overnight

Bathtub Colors

Inexpensive shaving cream
Food coloring

For each color, mix 2 tablespoons shaving cream with food coloring. Mix, and put each color into an old muffin tin. Give a paintbrush to the child, and let him/her draw their own art on the bathtub. This washes off very easily

Applesauce Cinnamon Dough

1/2 cup cinnamon
1/2 cup applesauce
1 plastic ziplock sandwich bag
Pour cinnamon and applesauce into ziplock bag. Seal bag and knead until mixture turns to dough. Allow your dough creations to air dry for 12 hours or until hard. Suggestion: Use cookie cutters to make really great, very fragrant tree ornaments,or air fresheners. Roll out dough between two sheets of wax paper. Don't roll out too thin(roll out dough to 1/4 to 1/2 inch in thickness).

Edible Necklaces and Bracelets

Supplies needed:
Shoestring (long, thin) licorice, cheerios, fruit loops, marshmallows, and/or any other stringable food
Thread the cheerios or whatever stringable food you've chosen onto the licorice string. Tie the licorice strings together in a knot and there you have it!

How to Make a Popsicle Stick Picture Frame

Craft Project Instructions:

1. Glue two popsicle sticks together. Repeat three more times, so that you have four sets of two popsicle sticks glued together. Each one of these will be a side of your photo frame.

2. Use the photo of our frame as guide and glue your four sets into a photo frame. We placed the right side and the left side down on the table and then glued the top and the bottom frames across them.

3. Use white glue or craft glue to draw squiggle lines on all sides except the back of the frame. Let the frame dry thoroughly.

4. Now you may need an adult to make the design on the top corners. We cut three pieces of popsicle stick for each corner and glued them on in an "X" shape, then glued one more piece on top.

If you prefer, you can leave the corners blank until after the painting, then glue on a flat glass marble, a seashell or a piece of sea glass, or maybe pretty buttons or small flowers.

5. Paint the entire frame in silver or gold paint, including the squiggle lines of glue.

6. To make the frame stand up, we glued 7 popsicle sticks together, with one on the bottom to keep it strong. You will need to ask an adult to help you to glue your photo frame to the side of the stand with hot glue. Paint the stand in the same color as your frame and let it dry.

8. Cut some clear plastic to the size of the frame and glue it to the back of the frame. Cut a piece of cardboard to the same size and glue this to the back of the plastic on all three sides, but not the top.

9. Cut out your photo and slide it between the plastic and the cardboard.

10. Present your gift to mom with a big smile!

Foam Bookworm Bookmark

Supplies:

•Craft Foam
•Pompom
•Paint Pen or Permanent Marker
•Floral Wire
•Wiggly eyes
•Tacky glue

What You Do:

First choose the pompom size you'd like to use: I used a two inch pompom, but yours might be different. I haven't supplied a pattern for this craft project as it is quite simple.

Place your pompom on the craft foam and draw a line around half of it to begin your pattern. Now measure seven inches from your pencil mark and place your pompom once again and draw a line half way around the pompom again. You should have something that looks like (Brackets). This is your pattern to begin cutting for the bookmark.

Cut around the lines you made and straight ahead to the next line you made, cut around that line and cut straight to the first line, ending where you began. Now you need to add a little wiggle to the sides of the bookmark. Just cut along the straight edge creating a little wiggle on both sides.

Glue your pompom to one end with tacky glue. Make a pair of glasses from floral wire (you can purchase these ready made, but they are really easy to make). To do this, use a fat pencil or some sort of tool that is round. Starting at the centre of a five inch piece of wire (if you're using a smaller or larger pompom, you'll have to adjust this length), wrap the wire around your pencil to form a circle in the wire. Remove your pencil and immediately beside the circle make another by wrapping the wire around the pencil again. Now you have the eye glasses part, just pull the two ends of the wire very gently to separate the two lenses slightly and bend each end of wire back to form the ear rests.

Glue the glasses in place on the pompom and once you are happy with the placement, glue wiggly eyes inside the lense part of the glasses.

Finish off by writing "Book Worm" on the foam with a permanent marker or paint pen.

Of course, you can also write a name or whatever you like on these adorable bookmarks.

Clay Pot Snowmen

This darling snowman and snowwoman make the perfect couple. All bundled up for a cold winter's day, and so easy, the kids can make them too!

You will need (for each snowman)

1- 1 1/2" diameter wooden ball
1- 2 1/4" diameter clay pot
2 buttons
gold ribbon
child's sock
material or mitten scrap
white craft or hot glue
black fine tip marker
small and large paintbrushes
acrylic paints in white, orange and pink
clear coat spray

What you do

Place newspaper down on work surface. Turn clay pot over and glue wooden ball to bottom of pot. When glue is dry, use large paint brush to paint entire the outside of the clay pot and the entire wooden ball with white paint. Let dry and apply a second coat.

Cut the foot end off of the child's sock. Create a brim by folding up the cuff of the sock, then position the cuff of the sock onto the "head" of the snowman (see photo). Glue the brim in place. Tie a piece of gold ribbon around the top of the hat and fringe the top with scissors. Adjust the fringe edges with your fingers until they look the way you want.

Tie a strip of material or mitten scrap around the neck to fashion a scarf. Glue in place if desired. Glue two buttons to the front of your snowman. With black fine tip marker, dot on eyes and mouth. Use a small paint brush to apply orange paint for a nose and gently dab on a thin amount of pink for the cheeks.

CLOTHESPIN MAGNETS

Grade: K+
Age: 4+

Objectives:
Children love to display their artwork on the refrigerator. Dad is always hanging up phone numbers and slips of paper. And Mom, of course, has her own little notes, lists, and reminders. With the help of the kids, why not personalize a magnet clip for everyone in the family?
What You Need:
wooden or plastic clothespins
buttons, google eyes, small silk flowers, etc
hot glue with parent's help)
magnet strips
posterboard (white is best)
What You Do:
Begin by drawing the first letter in each family member's name on a piece of posterboard. Cut out the letters, they should be approximately 3 inches in height.
Next, glue together two clothespins in cross cross fashion so that both open at the same end (bottom). Position your letters onto the crisscrossed clothespin to make sure it will fit comfortably. Lay the posterboard letter onto the a flat work surface.

Have the children choose what they would like to use to decorate each letter with. One child may be very fond of the color purple and may choose a variety of buttons, pom poms, flowers, and beads, all in purple. Another child may have a liking for google eyes as one of ours did! Use whatever beads, baubles and items you like, as long as they aren't too heavy. Have the children arrange their "finds" on the letters (atop the work surface) the way they would like them to be on their magnets.

An adult will need to operate the glue gun. Apply glue to the items and affix them, one at a time, to the posterboard letter. Set aside to dry completely. On the back of the crisscrossed clothespin, attach a long magnet strip (these are self adhesive and available at discount and craft stores). You can also recycle old business card and flat magnets that you have lying around by cutting them to fit and gluing to the back. When finished, glue the letter to the clothespin and hang on the refrigerator!

BROWN BAG KITES
Grade: K-6
Age: 4-12

Objectives:
Identification:
Students will be directed to observe and discuss kites and how they fly (see further resources at the end of the art lesson).
Creation:
Students will create a paper bag kite using mostly recycled materials.
Appreciation:
Students will learn to appreciate the art created not only by them, but by others as well.

What You Need:
Large brown paper grocery bag (one per kinderartist)
Strong string
Scissors
Hole punch
A number of paper ring reinforcement (the kind you use on paper in binders -- from any office supply. You could also substitute masking tape).
School glue or paste
Paint (tempera, acrylic -- whatever you have)
Crayons, markers, pencil crayons
Paper streamers or crepe paper that you can cut into strips
A few found objects (bits of paper, glitter, buttons -- nothing too heavy)
What You Do:
Begin by taking the hole punch and making four (4) holes in the top of the paper bag - one in each of the corners. Add paper ring reinforcements to the holes, or put a small piece of masking tape over the hole and poke through with a pencil. This will ensure that your holes don't tear through.

Next, cut two (2) lengths of string about 30" each.

Tie each end of the strings through a hole in the bag. The goal is to create two loops.

Next, cut another piece of string -- again around 30". Loop this new piece of string through the two loops you created and tie in a knot. This piece of string will become the handle of your kite.

You are now ready to decorate the paper bag kite using paint, markers or whatever else you desire. You can paint designs on the kite or turn the kite into a fish by adding eyes, gills and fins. You can glue different items to the kite but be sure not to load the kite down with heavy items -- or it will have a hard time staying up in the air.

Use paper streamers as kite tails and glue them to the bottom of the paper bag. You can make your own streamers by cutting crepe paper into strips. Another nifty streamer idea is to take plastic bags and cut them into strips.

Once the glue and paint is dry, the kite can fly. Hold on tightly to the string handle and run so that the wind catches the kite. When the bag fills with air it will float and flutter behind you.

As a variation, you can add a longer handle string to the kite so it will fly higher in the air.

PET ROCK CRAFT

• Rock
• Acrylic craft paint
• Suggestion decorations: yarn, wiggle eyes, markers, glitter glue, sequins, beads, pom poms, etc
• White craft glue
1. Start by washing your rock with warm soapy water. If your rock is jagged or has nooks and crannies, use a scrub brush to get all the dirt out.
2. Decorate your rocks however you like using just about anything. If it will stick, use it!
3. To make our Pet Rock Piggie, paint a smooth oval shaped stone with pink acrylic paint and let dry.
4. Glue a pink button to the center of the rock and two miniature pink pom poms toward the top for ears.
5. Use the handle end of a paintbrush dipped in white paint to create the whites of the eyes. After that dries repeat the process with black paint to add the blacks of the eyes.
6. Add a little red paint to the pink paint in your palette and dip your finger in. Dab off excess and put a spot on either side of the “nose” as the rosy cheeks.
7. Use a black fine tipped marker to dot on freckles.
8. To make our Pet Rock Monster, paint a bumpy or odd-shaped rock green and let dry.
9. Paint a bean shape on for the mouth with black paint and let dry.
10. Use a toothpick and white paint to paint on pointy teeth onto the black mouth.
11. Use the handle end of a paintbrush to dot on eyes with white paint. Use a toothpick to add the black dots for the eyes after the whites have dried.
12. Use a black marker or a toothpick dipped in black paint to add eyebrows.
13. Cut yarn into ˝” lengths.
14. Add some white craft glue to the top of the rock monster’s “head” and thin it out with your finger. You should have a layer, but not too much or the yarn will slide off.
15. Gently place the yarn pieces, standing up, on top of the glue and let dry completely.
16. Use the handle end of a paintbrush to dot on yellow spots.
17. When projects are completely dry, spray with acrylic sealer spray.

Bubbles

1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent
1 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 cup water
Put the dishwashing detergent in the water. Carefully stir in sugar, trying to avoid suds. Take a regular drinking straw and cut into 4 pieces. Then dip into the solution and blow your bubbles. Tie a rope loop up to a foot in diameter on the end of a stick and make a gallon of bubbles. Dip the rope in the bubbles and run with them. This will give you giant bubbles.

Clay Christmas Ornaments

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 tsp. powdered alum
1 1/2 cups water

Mix ingredients well in a large bowl. If the dough is too dry, work in another tablespoon of water with your hands. Dough can be rolled or molded and can be colored with a few drops of food coloring.

To roll: Roll dough 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut with cookie cutters dipped in flour. Insert wire or make hole in top about 1/4 inch down for hanging.

To mold: Shape dough no more than 1/2 inch thick.

Bake ornaments on ungreased cookie sheet for 30 minutes in 250° oven. Turn and bake another 1 1/2 hours until hard and dry. Remove and cool. When done, paint and seal with spray varnish. You can lightly sand before painting to make the paint adhere better.

*Alum can be found in the spice section of your store.

Scented Cinnamon Ornaments

1 cup cinnamon
1 Tbsp. cloves
1 Tbsp. nutmeg
3/4 cup applesauce
2 Tbsp. white glue
ribbon

In a bowl mix the spices. Add applesauce and glue, stirring until well blended. Work mixture until dough is smooth and ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Divide into 4 portions and roll each portion on floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dough with cookie cutters of desired shapes. Using a straw or toothpick, make a small hole in the top of each ornament. Place on wire racks and allow to dry at room temperature for several days. (For more uniform drying, turn ornaments over once each day.) Thread ribbon through holes to form garland. You can also glue to a wooden hoop, forming a wreath and decorate with ribbon as desired. Makes approximately 32 two-inch ornaments. DO NOT EAT!

Edible Play Dough

1/3 cup margarine
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract or flavorings
1 lb. powdered sugar
food coloring (optional)

Mix first 4 ingredients together. Add powdered sugar. Knead it. Divide and add food coloring. Keep refrigerated to keep from spoiling when not in use. You can replace vanilla with flavored extracts to give flavor other than just plain sweetness.
