Great point! And Aaron makes another good recommendation; have friends with Power Blocks, they're quality too!! I suggest trying both out while you're saving up :)

Im not even sure individual ones would be cheaper... cause I bought 12 lb ones, for 32 bucks, and I already had 5's and 8's... (dont remember how much I paid for them, cause it was about 7 years ago)
Now I need to buy 15's but they are 42 bucks.
So I really think once you figure all the different prices out, its probably the same for the individual ones and they take up more space lol!

I use PowerBlocks myself. The U-90 Phase 1 set costs about the same as the Selecttechs, and covers a similar weight range, but I like Powerblocks because they're more compact, they feel more durable, and when I'm ready, I can buy expansion packs to take them up to 90 or 135 pounds each. That may seem ludicrous, but it wasn't that long ago that I could squat 225, and I was still pretty doughy at the time.

As for the money, I agree that it's an investment in your health. $129 for a workout program or $300 for weights may be a bit to cough up at once, but if you put them to good use, you'll get your money's worth. It's only a waste if you don't use them. Besides, individual dumbbells may be cheaper in the short run, but once you get beyond about 20 pounds, they get expensive.

Noey I need to have a talk with your Hubby emoticon LOL These are seriously SUCH a wise investment for anyone with the intent of working out for years to come. He too could benefit greatly from them; my Son loves his!

Good luck on convincing him :) as you continue to improve your fitness and he sees your results, maybe he'll come around.

& there's always the cookie jar method; do that with my destination racing.... lil' by lil' I get there :)

Wish ya the best!

I have the dumbells with the discs. It can take a bit of extra time to change them out but they work. Im using up to 25lbs. Gloves are a MUST! I just got them as I was starting to get calluses on my hands.

Hmm ok. Thanks ladies for all the input. :) Ill look into some of these while I try to decide.
I know Ive seen a few sets on Craigslist, but I was worried that they might be broken or something... ya know? I would hate to spend all that money and then have the weights fall out on my head or something.

I bought a set of Gold's Gym weights from Wal Mart for $22. There are 4 discs that are 2.5 lbers & 4 discs that are 7.5 lbers. They don't give me a ton of options but I am creative enough to make what they are work. And they work great. For $22, it was more than worth it.

I'm in week 3 of Burn and I also use the free weights (5, 8, 10 & 12s that I've had for a while) and have been looking into purchasing the Selecttech 552s. Currently Bowflex has a special and if you google "bowflex 552" + "coupon" you can find some reputable sites for coupons -I think I found Ben's Bargains at bensbargains.net (or something like that) and they have some reputable coupons. Still too much for me but just an idea. Also in watching the DVDs they always have one person using the resistance bands. I haven't researched those yet but it seems that might be a less expensive way to go. One more way is craigslist. I've found some on the site for less but by the time I call, they are already sold. I don't know where you are but where we live (Central Valley, CA) there are consignment stores called Play it Again Sports and sometimes (rarely though) they get some used ones in for resale. Keep Pushing Play! whoo hoo

I bought my heavier weights when they were on sale so they didn't cost me that much. Right now though the heaviest I'm using is 12 lbs. I'm only in week 1 on Burn.

I bought up to 25 lbs....I would LOVE to buy the select-techs though. They take up a lot less space and look easy to use.

I bought a set of adjustable, really basic weights that I keep at 20, but you can adjust by taking off/adding on discs. 20 is the highest they go.

I had to invest in gloves as well, since the bar chafes my hands. I got them on Amazon, free shipping - and they are doing the job. I use them in addition to 10s right now in the push phase. I just use them as 20s, though.
And it's working for me for now! I don't know if I will go heavier later on, but it's very challenging right now.

Here's the link to the set I got. I saw them also at Modells for about 10.00 more.

I had kind of looked into some of the cheaper brands, but found the reviews to be poor on them, and everyone seems to say selectechs are the way to go... :(

I actually use my 12's for everything except triceps work... and some stuff the 12s arent enough. Im seeing 15's needed soon... and Im not sure beyond that. I just dont want to end up spending just as much money on dumbbells as I would have on the other weights... ya know?? Ill have to do some more research and think about it. Thanks for your info. ;)

I would love those select-techs too but like you said, they cost a boatload! Years back, my husband and I invested in a million dumbbells so I have all sizes.

I found that I rarely go over 25lbs and that is only used on a couple of the lower body exercises. I don't know about you, but I have very weak shoulders so most times I never go over 10lbs.

The weight I find challenging but manageable is 15lbs. I use that for a lot of the exercises. I'm in the Lean phase of the program. There are times I wish I had 17.5 for a bit more challenge. 20lbs is just a bit to much.

I hope my comments help you decide what you need.

I'm using Reebok adjustable weights (increments of 5lbs up to 25lbs). Found them at Target for $140 for the set. There's also Gold Gym which is a little bit less. If I'm not ready for a 5lb increment, a strap on a 2lb ankle weight to my wrists.

What are you all using for weights?
I have 8lbs and 12 lbs... which Im OK with... but Im just starting out with BURN, and I know it one of the phases your supposed to try heavier weights... well I dont HAVE heavier, and I know already some of the things I 'could' be lifting heavier if I had it. I dont want to get a whole lineup of dumbbells though and as much as I want those weights she uses, I dont have the 400 bucks to shell out right now. :(
What does everyone else use???
