It sounds like you deserve a break! I had kids similar to yours and then was switched to more moderate kids. I give you credit. I'm not sure I could do it anymore!

We also have some parents who get to visit potential classrooms and "shop" for the placement of their choice. Just heard last week that one of the little guys we held eligibility determination and placement for 3 years ago will be coming back to me after parents went to war over the summer between his exit of Pre-K Special needs and K - he was supposed to be with me. Did not disappoint me, as when I went to observe, he knocked the Pre-K teacher flat on the floor and knocked the wind out of her. She had to leave the room when she could stand up. He was a hand full then, large heavy strong very low cognition. We all knew he was in the wrong placement in mod impaired, and the grades 3 - 5 teacher says he definitely does not belong in her room next year. Word is, they may move him back soon. Never rains but what it pours. My energizer bunny was out 3 days lost week with dental issues, but he was back in rare form. Spent his day trying to stomp the older students, none of whom have any idea of how to defend themselves and are pretty fragile. He spent a lot of the day sitting with me, holding hands. Early to bed, but tomorrow, I am going painting after work, mental emotional reward.

Can you write out guidelines for each criteria so that it's more clear to them. I have on that's in BD but comes to me for academics. I swear he hates me, but everyone says he doesn't like anyone! Today he refused to follow directions and didn't get much done, but he didn't lose control so I counted that for at least halfway decent. I would say his behavior was poor if it was another kid but his bar isn't set as high if that makes sense. It's tough not to take it personally.

LINKY, good luck with all your meetings this week.

Today was a mixed bag. I was awakened early with my oldest getting sick. It's a strange stomach bug that hit. He vomited once, then was hungrier than a horse about 4-5 hours later. That isn't like any stomach flu I've ever seen. My middle son had the same thing three weeks ago. Hmmm... School was quiet, though.

I'm having some difficulty with a student and my associates. One of my students is VERY difficult. He's downright unpleasant, and I think my associates are having problems not holding his unpleasantness against him when it comes to his daily point sheets. He's earning scores that are lower than I think he deserves. An example, I needed to redirect him to get back to academic work. He didn't really go back to work, but he didn't tell me to shut up and leave him alone, which he has been known to do. I'd say that deserves some credit. Suggestions? I'm also meeting with my principal and court liaison tomorrow morning.

We've had parents who have gotten to decide which class to put their child in. Thank goodness our special ed. director doesn't allow that anymore. I don't think they should get to "shop" for the teacher/room they want. Good luck!

Are you kidding me? Another student transfer?
Let me bring you up to date:
plan the year with 6 students
add 2 transfers = 8 students from 2nd graders to KK
whoops find 2 KK who need self contained class so ........
move 2 up to counterparts classroom (she only had 4)
move 1 to a better placement
so down to 7, all intense KK and 1st.
so Friday have transfer meeting on a 2nd grader whose parent gets to visit both rooms and decide best placement. (I have no intense behaviors so guess who will get the new one)
God is making sure I remember my last year!

I could cheerfully just roll back into bed, but that's not going to happen. Need to go out to the colony today and see if I can run interference between my alternative high school teacher and the principal. Then this afternoon I get to play referee between parent, liaison from the school for the deaf, and the classroom teacher who has this student. That one I think I will need hockey pads for protection.

I have at least 2 IEP meeting every day this week so it doesn't leave me much time to get everything else done.

Okay, rant over. Will go take Bella for a walk.

walked 4 miles

Most everything was cancelled for today except youth group for my older girls. I took a day to grocery shop, made apple crisp which was good, walked 4 miles, and it was a day of rest. I looked at my data for work but confused about it honestly. I have a professional day tomorrow but will try to walk 3 miles before that begins. I then have to tutor until 7:30 PM so it'll be a day for sure.

I'll join that love/hate relationship with technology. I have three laptop computers in my room that don't work after they were reimaged over the summer. I haven't called tech support because I haven't needed them in my classroom. I'll get to it; it just isn't at the top of the list. Then there is Infinite Campus. I went to do some work on it a few weeks ago only to find myself locked out. What? My username and password are the same and have been since I started in the district. Come Monday and tech support, I was told that IC did an audit of usernames and passwords and automatically locked all accounts that didn't have a secure password. No warning of the audit, no warning to change the password, just locked out. Really?

Sounds like me! I was just on the phone with Apple tech support for my iPads. I bought one app then was told I had to answer my security questions. It kept telling me my answers were incorrect. Well after 20 min. on the phone one works and I'm locked out of the other one because I've tried to log in too many times. There's nowhere to check that you've forgotten your answers. You have to call tech support. What a pain. I'm going to see if our school tech guys can figure it out.

Spent all of Friday and much of the previous month begging for help with user names and passwords for essential programs ( IEP writer, edline, new state evaluation system), Every time, I get a message that I am not a registered used, but my email works fine and I get all the messages telling me what I am required to do and when to submit. I have sent more email this school year about tech issues, and getting "0" help. We have a traveling tech, who will come in, hit keys, say it is all fixed, but never test it, then he leaves. I send requests for help with multiple copies to my admin, so they know I am trying, but here we are, needing October child count, and I am still "not a registered user" and cannot complete this work. Pbbbbfffttttt. Blowing raspberries at all technology. From a different computer, my bank accounts access is also squirrely. Totally different issue. Went to Reel to Real movie night at church Sat. night, and that was great. Working today with my honey to build an "L" shaped wall to go around my desk area at work. Has to be safe, sturdy, non - tipping and fire marshal compliant. My five little energizer bunnies get into teacher computer, push all kinds of buttons, take the phone off the hook, try to eat the wires and chew on the mouse, mess with the printer setting. In this tiny space we also have a mini refrig and a MW, that cannot be used, as they go open doors and also push buttons. Left over from when we had students who were learning house keeping and basic food prep, a few years back. Does not sound like I am talking about children. On Thursday, our building was denied a one on one aide for an AU kiddie in regular ed, told the teacher just suck it up and deal with it. So not good, for the child and for the whole class. But there were 3 full time one on one aide positions posted for other buildings. My super great PM aide has bid on all of them, and I wish him well. He really need full time work with benefits. Who knows what I will get for a replacement, but will cross that bridge when we get to it. Oh my. It is a beautiful day, going to be out on the desk working with my honey to finish this wall. Oh, and my 21 year old pick up truck passed a rigorous state inspection with flying colors. Yeah. Cooking healthy today. Crock pots in full swing, fresh groceries later. Hope everyone has some success in the week to come. Almost October.

I got a lot done today, although I'm not quite finished with school work. I'm going to finish up tomorrow, stop at my son's house, and spend some time with hubby. Weather is supposed to be gorgeous!

Walked 3.5 mi w/ my daughter in the blazing heat in 63 min

Let's see I took my car into the shop b/c it is acting funny, so will be w/o my car for a while. (I know why we have 3 cars) Grabbed a few things from Wal-mart that were and headed home. I tried to complete reports for my tutoring job but I am lost b/c it is all online and a new system. I called for help and left a voicemail. I took a nice nap. I walked 3.5 miles w/ my daughter in the heat w/in 63 minutes. I should have did more exercise but I did not. I read for a while on my trampoline b/c the weather was beautiful w/ my daughter. The girls and I washed the van, that was fun. I made dinner and enjoyed it w/ the girls. Then I curled up in my chair in my living room and finished that book. I am winding down b/c I have a headache but overall a very relaxing day for me. Tomorrow will be busier though. Oh shoot I skipped the cleaning part of the day.

There is a window that comes up to tell you where the mistakes are, but then it's so minor I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. It was my first one so I'm sure I'll get better after doing more of them.
Get some rest!

Kim, there is a fairly short way to look that up. As I was working on mine this week, I've been jumping around and was afraid I would forget something. It's on my work e-mail. I'll look it up Monday and let you know.

I'm not sure if I'm off to work on school work or going to rest. I am sure, however, that tonight is going to be an early night.

I tried to submit an IEP yesterday and it wouldn't let me. Some box was checked but it's almost impossible to find where it is. Luckily my consultant fixed the issue and got it submitted. Heather, I hope we get to know the system better so we can fix these things on our own.
I have a bunch of games I want to make for school, some reading to do, and some revamping of what I'm teaching as well. Still glad it's the weekend so I can do it here. I brought a ton of stuff home with me. I want to be able to enjoy the 75 degree sunny day tomorrow!

Heather....last Thursday (the 19th) it was a full moon! My students were out of their minds all last week. I couldn't wait to have it be over. Thankfully they have settled down some this week, but we're still feeling the effects of a cold that is going around.

BOMBCELL - do the best you can do to fix the problem and you will all learn from it.
Glad to hear other students are squirrely. Mine were off the wall today! I would have thought it was a full moon. Happy to know it was Friday, but read my last blog because it was a doozy of a day all round.

BOMBCHELL, like Kim said, fix it and move on.

If I didn't know better I would swear it was a full moon. My students have been squirrelly the last several days. Then there was the "explosion" to fuel the fire. I had a student arrested on a major charge out of my classroom. It just went down hill from there. My court liaison didn't get my text about the arrest, so thinks I'm not doing my job... I put the pieces back together with the other people in the building. (Remember I'm in a high school room in a preschool building, so the other people are a little leery of me and my students. This just fuels that...) My court liaison and I will process on Monday. Between now and then, I need to do lots of work for school: grading papers, redoing English, making some changes to duties and room structure/organization... There's more, but I'm too tired.

Wii tennis 25 min
125 Wall Push ups 5 min
walked 5 mi in 90 min

Total 120 min

The started wonderful w/ a 2 hour delay, so I took an extra 45 min of sleep and then worked out for 30 min. before driving to work. I rocked out 3 miles before my students ever got there. The students were squirrely b/c of it but nothing new there. I made a horrible mistake w/ my Mentee and I am working at fixing it and being honest about my own mistake. I feel horrible about my mistake b/c someone yelled at my Mentee and they had no right too. She was upset and crying, that bothers me. Anyway attended a meeting after school, score keeper for volleyball until 9:30 PM. I think I walked into my home about 10 PM.

My court liaison needed to change the IEP date tomorrow, so she bought me more time. :) Gives me the weekend to work on it, I hope.

I also have a new student. He will be part time, coming from another state. He's been here four months and we still don't have any records. He should have graduated last year and is still a looonnnngggg way from graduation. Oh, well, guess I've made miracles happen before. :)

What a day. Worked like a dog but got absolutely nothing done, nothing that I had planned at least. Tomorrow is 6 hours of PD, based on all the pilot programs for which we are the guinea pigs. emoticon

LINKY, hie thee to the doctor!

Kim, I think I'm going to spend the next two days chanting "I hate the new IEP system". They've made it so much more complicated than it needs to be.

I'm very lucky my associates this year are great. Does everything get done in a timely manner? No, but I haven't had anyone hang up on another professional in the district. I haven't had to talk to anyone about yelling at students or other professionals in the district. My first "team" meeting with my principal and court liaison is next Tuesday.

I am finally having a wonderful year. All 7 of my kiddos is either kindergarten or 1st grade. Most are non-communicative (they have words but don't use them to communicate). I have a schedule that is working. My para and I are getting things planned and carried out. So now having said that, I just jinxed my room and the kid to throw the monkey wrench will show up soon! (hopefully kidding)
To those who are under the weather, see a doctor because being sick doesn't make our jobs any easier. To those who have para that aren't good, I feel your pain. Hope they move her out soon.

I can relate. I had 5 paras last year and for the most part they were very good. They still didn't always follow through the way I wanted things done. This year I have one that I share and it is wonderful!

Kim...isn't it sad that every day I have to determine where and with whom she will do the least amount of damage.

I've had paras like that over the years. They make your job so difficult it's ridiculous. Funny how no one wants her but you have to be stuck with her. Frustrating. Do they think she won't do any damage to your students?

May have to break down and go to the doctor. I am coughing so I can't sleep. Everyone pointed out today that I looked bad. How uplifting. I feel like a cough drop junkie. Most everyone (staff) on our floor has this. Wonder who brought this plague in?

Sept. 24, 2013

I walked 4 miles in 72 min

I had a very productive day at work! I completed progressive reports, got my graded work into the grade book, I actually started my lesson plans for next week, I tutored tonight as well. I completed tutoring paperwork and am headed to bed. Tomorrow I must leave my house by 6 AM so I need a bit of sleep tonight.

Kim....I agree....offer them the luxury of your volunteer position! And by all means, vent away! We have all done it.

I too am struggling with grouping my students. I have 6 boys, all on the autism spectrum. Some are non-verbal and most have severe behaviors. Only 2 read near grade level and 2 can read sight words. I also do discrete trials with my more severe 2 students. That requires 1 on 1 attention with either myself or my para. We rotate who does this. I really have 3 groups, but because one of us is out of the rotation, it leaves 2 of us to work with 3 groups. My other aide is THAT aide. The one that has been bounced from school to school, classroom to classroom, because she is not effective and they "don't know what to do with her" so I am in year 3 with her. Year 1 I tolerated her. Near the end of year 2 I started to get annoyed with her. I begged my principal to take her or move me! He said no. Now I just can't take her at all! I could write a book of nonsense that she does, but people would think I made it up. I am not that creative. Like today when she told the boys that "eyes" was one of their senses. This lady (with 25 years as a para in our system) makes my job so much harder! So trying to give her kids to work with and have their work NOT be done by her is really hard for me when it is just 2 of us working with 5 kids in 3 different levels. I feel your pain for sure Kim!

As far as the soccer team goes, offer to let them take over and tell them you'll step down. You certainly have other ways to use your time. Trust me, no one will offer to take your place! If they don't volunteer they shouldn't comment to someone who is donating their time. I'm frustrated for you!

Trying to check in more regularly, but it doesn't always happen!

I'm sure it is interesting getting to meet so many authors! Love Eric Carle.

Our new IEP system is confusing and frustrating- consistently freezes or locks us out and we can't do anything. I've only done one on the new system and that was in May. I have one scheduled for Oct 1, but will end up having my colleague do it because I'm being sent to a training for Corrective Reading.

The math teacher who was invited as Gen Ed for that meeting emailed back and said "12:30 is lunch. Should I bring my lunch?" Really?! I'd rather the student's LA teacher come anyway, but I was just floored. I emailed back and copied the principal saying that I understood and apologized for the inconvenience, but that the interpreter was available at that time, then asked the principal if we could arrange someone to cover her class and let her eat.

My classes and caseload continue to be a struggle. I tried small groups/pairs this week, but the ones that weren't with a teacher acted like it was time to talk and cut up. Nearly ready to just give up! I met with our EC director this week. She said that, regardless of what else happens, my current position will not be set up with the EC teacher also teaching 2 math classes after this year. It is too late in the year to make that change now, so it is just getting through this year. She knows I miss self-contained and my kids and now knows how hard this year has been for me. We don't know yet if we will get to add a self-contained class at my current school next year, but I am hoping that we do.

As if I wasn't feeling frustrated enough, twice in the last week I've had parents of players on my daughter's soccer team (I'm the manager and handle paperwork, schedules, etc) complain because I didn't know enough in advance about changes. Very biting comments that just frustrate me. Tired of trying to be all things to all people. Glad that this is likely the last year dd will play with them, as she is graduating in May.

Sorry to vent, just frustrated with everything and I know you all understand!

We had a pretty good day today. I've missed one of my kids quite frequently because of his behavior issues. He usually falls apart in the afternoons. There is a definite mental health piece involved. Mom is open to getting help so hopefully she can. Poor kid.

I have a page B but it doesn't sound nearly as tough as yours. I don't have any more IEPs until Feb. or March and then I have them all except the one I had. I don't like them all bunched together. I think I'll have to write one before that because the kid will reach his goals early, which is a good thing!

Janine, I agree with Kim, that sounds like a really cool place to live.

Kim, I'm finding I don't mind some of the new IEP system. I like the drop down menus and all the stuff that is pretty easy to fill in. Then there is pg. B. Be glad you don't have to work with it. It is a HUGE pain in my neck. The state is getting really picky about it, too. DMPS is implementing all sorts of transition changes and paperwork for the IEPs because they fail at compliance almost every year. Now I have specific questionnaires and surveys to do for each grade level and a rating scale of transition behaviors. Not only do I have to do this, but I also have to upload them into the IEP system. The rating scale starts this year (or 8th grade, whichever is sooner) and will follow students through graduation. The "powers-that-be" say that for the early IEPs we can do a gradual implementation, but I don't see that flying for too long.

LINKY, I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Chaos week to come: transition training today, dentist appointments for the boys tomorrow, Nick's med check Thursday, IEP meeting Friday... At least I will have Wednesday afternoon to work in my room. :)

Had our audit by the state on September 11. Got the report back on Thursday afternoon. Too busy to open it (they sent it by state e-mail). Will have to do that today.

Exhausted, coughed all night. Don't think this is allergies--as my ears are starting to ache.

Sept. 22, 2013

walked 3.5 miles in 65 min
100 wall push up's 4 min
Wii Just dance II - 26 min

Total 95 min

I can proudly say I took a nap both days this weekend for some much needed sleep. Yesterday I accomplished cleaning my bedroom and both of my desks. I also started writing 4 different vocab. tests along w/ the keys. My PR party was a bust, but it happens. Today before church I completed my wall push ups and my Just Dance exercise. After church I dropped off my two oldest to work while taking my youngest to the mall to Christmas shop for her sisters. I also returned a few items I did not want. I came home took a nap and then I went for a 3.5 mile walk. I spent time w/ my youngest making Amish friendship bread, sat outside in the cool air and read my book for an hour. For me this was a non-stressful weekend not as much to complete. especially after last week and Friday.

Janine, what a fun place to live. How fortunate to get to meet all those authors.
Heather, I'm not a fan of the new IEP yet, but I guess I'll learn to like it. I haven't submitted mine from Thurs. yet. I have to go over it with a fine toothed comb since we're being audited next year. I didn't have a chance yet since we just got home and were gone all weekend.

Boy, what a difference a new CPU makes. My motherboad died last week and we went and go a new Pavillion on Friday. I haven't gotten an error message since we hooked up the new machine.

Need to write a report, but so congested don't know if I can concentrate long enough to get it done. Have a terrible cough so don't know if it is a cold or allergies.

I have met and talked with so many authors and illustrators over the years. It helps to live in Western Massachusetts where a lot of them live. I have had drinks with Eric Carle and visited (briefly) with him more than 5 times. I have met and talked with Tomie dePaola (one of my favorites), Mo Willems (another favorite), Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black (Spiderwick Chronicles), Kathryn Brown, Ruth Sanderson, Jeff Mack (Bunnicula), David Hyde Costello, Diane de Groat, Barry Moser, Patricia MacLachlan, Katherine Paterson (Bridge to Terabithia), Judith Byron Schachner (SkippyJon Jones), Leslea Newman, Stephen King, Jodi Picoult, Avi, Nick Bruel (Bad Kitty), Paul Zelinsky, and many more! The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is about 40 minutes north of me and I go at least once a month. We also have a local independent bookstore that hosts many authors. I have been very blessed to live in this area. Anytime you want to join me, come on up! Chris Van Allsburg (Jumanji) is going to be at the museum in November.

You met Jane Yolen? I think I'm very jealous. A few years ago, I was looking for a "companion" to Night and found Briar Rose. I also used it with the original "Sleeping Beauty".

I started on my IEP yesterday. While it's a little convoluted, I think I like all the drop down menus better than me filling them in myself. It seemed a little easier, at least to do the basic stuff. Kim, what do you think of it, since you use it, too?

I've got my laundry done and cooking going. I'm waiting for one thing to come out of the oven, then we're going to a World Food Festival going on downtown. I'll do a little more work this afternoon during nap/quiet time and I'll go into work early tomorrow morning to finish up anything I don't get done today. Let the rat race begin. :)

Went to see Eric Carle at a book signing at his museum today. While I have met and talked with him many times, it never gets old or boring. I also got to talk with his wife, a former special ed teacher, Jane Yolen (think Owl Moon) , and Jane's daughter, Heidi Stempel (another author). We chatted like old friends. It was wonderful!

I need to start an IEP this weekend, but I'm procrastinating. This will be my first IEP on the new system, plus under the new compliance rules. It is also a more complicated IEP because it is nearly a year out of date. The student hadn't been attending school, but no one did the paperwork to terminate the IEP due to non-attendance. At least I've got a new consultant, since the one I had last year and started the year with was going to tell me how to do it incorrectly. Then she said she would take the heat when the time came. I didn't believe her and talked to my court liaison about it. There was a formal request made to change consultants assigned to the program. My court liaison denies making the request, but I don't believe her. :)

Sept. 20, 2013

I arrived at work by 7 AM and walked 2 miles before my students arrived. My day started w/ my student being upset and basically refusing to do anything for 2 periods including throwing himself on the floor and lying there. I made several calls to parents and whatnot and his Aunt came in. He worked for a while when his Aunt was present but after that he was back to causing chaos. At lunch time he earned a referral and would not allow me to enjoy my lunch break alone as I tried to walk 1 more mile. I actually had to get the principal then another student earned a referral for being disrespectful and loud during a math test. My third student was upset w/ his grades and shut down. I felt like it would never end. Finally my student that laid on the floor joined class and turned it around. But I felt like it lasted forever. I have had to walk several more laps on the ramps throughout the afternoon, so I ended up w/ 4 miles. I had Prime Time Friday which is for kids that are in serious trouble and must stay on a Fri. night till 6 PM. I worked on my lesson plans but I was not quite completed but I had to hurry to get my girls as I drove 40 mi. to grab them dropped them off at home. I delivered product and headed back to work to finish my lesson plans. I finished about 9:30 PM and got home about 10 P.M. can I say whipped? I am hoping I stayed within my calorie range b/c several times I wanted ice cream but I resisted.

The parent of the child I am having the most difficulty with came in today and we had a great conference! What a difference today made! When you have the support of the parents the learning can begin. I am so fortunate to have been given this gift today as I didn't think I could take another day of this student's outbursts and nonsense.
