No big deal. Really wasn't kidding when I said I am having trouble keeping my days straight, so I'm not casting aspersions on anyone. :)

Your EA sounds like they need to be put in their place. She's doing nothing to help that kid. I'm sure it's very frustrating for you!

My day started with a parent meeting, also. It went very well. The parent is VERY supportive and knows her child VERY well. She enjoys hearing the positive things, understands we will be evaluating for special education services in the fall, but also understands some of the issues he is having. One of the biggest issues he has started having recently is that when he wants help, he wants it RIGHT NOW, regardless of who else I'm working with or what else is going on. Then, when he can't get the help he wants RIGHT NOW, he becomes very disrespectful. Love how supportive and understanding the parent is. My court liaison also stated that I was under a mandate to get my two seniors graduated and that he would need to be more independent or use one of the other options I gave him for getting help (before school starts, during break, or during lunch). Today went much better for that student.

Then there is another student... He has a personal relationship with one of my associates, in that he is friends with her son. This student has decided that he is only going to follow her directions and will sleep if she isn't working with him and feeding him answers. This afternoon, he slept through 2/3 of his geometry lesson, got up at the request of his favored associate, then decided not to come to geometry but head to her table to talk to her instead of work. When I looked to my associate to turn off the talking and conversation, she turned it back to the student. Not sure what I'm going to do with this for the rest of the year...

As usual I've got my weekend-ful of work and activities, though my son's baseball game has been cancelled for tomorrow due to the snow. It has been rescheduled already for Sunday in the theory the snow has melted and the ground dried up. I'm not so hopeful on that. :P For now, I'm off to put the kids to bed and have some time to myself.

Great morning IEP. Grandfather came in (he and grammy are legal guardians). What a lot of insight he has on his granddaughter. Thoughful comments and good questions. It was a great way to start the day.

Kim, that is great to hear. I'm happy your room will be returning to normal.

My room is its usual chaos. Today was non-stop working with students. While I love this aspect of teaching, I found it particularly draining today, mentally. I was so exhausted that I almost convinced myself out of going to the gym, but I did, and I feel better.

Barb, I feel for you with your problem parent. While many of my parents are easy to get along with, I've had a few, and I just want to smack my forehead when dealing with them.

Kim, yeah, I just want to shake my head at my students who quit so close to the finish line. Like I said, the one will make it because we'll tweek the grading scale for him on the one class. I still smack my forehead and say "doh" when I think of it. His house staff is hopeful that he will come back, though, so either way he'll graduateThe other one won't make it. There just isn't any way in 3 1/2 weeks for him to complete 13 classes. If he had been attending every day, maybe, but he's only attending 2-3 days a week and is frequently late to boot, so it just isn't going to happen. Truthfully, after nine years in my previous position where I was expected to get my kids graduated, and my new district is okay with him not graduating, I'm having some cognitive dissonance. I'm working through it, though. Hope your newest student starts cooperating soon.

Goodness today's IEP was like oral surgery without Novocane. Mom was late because even though she had talked to the elementary sped teacher twice today about the IEP for her daughter, she drives 10 miles north to the middle school for a meeting about her son. She then had to turn around and come back so we could hold the meeting. It just went down hill from there.

Next week we get to do a meeting in the middle school with her son. Augh---------

It always seems that some child comes without the appropriate clothing or a lunch on field trip days after countless notes have been sent!
Heather, does it drive you crazy that they bail out so close to being done with their credits? It would me!

Lots to do before the end of the year, and I'm starting to feel the pressure of getting it all done. My court liaison continues to notice that I look tired, but I think that was more from the day than not sleeping, though I'm not doing that, either. The to-do lists of all the things I need to do before the end of the school year is starting to feel overwhelming.

My student meeting this afternoon was cancelled due to the JCO's sick child. It will be rescheduled, again. This is the second or third time to reschedule this meeting. Then there are my seniors... My one who has about two hours worth of work to do in order to finish his credits took off from his group home this weekend. As it stands, if he doesn't return, he will still graduate, I think. Part of what he needs to do is a senior survey that is MUST be done before he can officially be done. If he doesn't come back from his powder, I'm not sure what will go on with him. My other senior was gone again today. There is a rumor floating around that he is in jail, but I can't get that confirmed. His guardian didn't know where he was, either. What does this tell you?? I've got another student who didn't show up for court today and has had a warrant issued for him. My classroom is shrinking quick, but I'm definitely still very busy.

Not so much! Tantrums, throwing things, etc. I had my principal to come in a see. I did teach for a total of an hour. Too bad for my other kids I guess. Just a tough one. I'm hoping it will get better this week.

I've got a meeting this week with a senior who probably won't graduate because he decided that passing English was optional. He has become very beligerent and it seems like anything we try to turn the behavior around is useless. Don't know how this is going to turn out. His mother seems completely oblivous. (The just moved here this fall, so we don't have much history with them.)

HDHAWK, hank in there. You can do it, and as you said, only 25 more days. I know you will probably be in a different position next year, but don't spend your entire summer working.

NFLATTE, good luck on your field trip. Hope your student can be successful without his para and mother.

LINKYSD, I agree, it was a beautiful day. My children played outside in the morning, afternoon, and evening with short breaks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They LOVED it!!

It occurred to me today that I've got a senior with attendance issues, so I will likely have another parent meeting sometime this week to discuss his attendance and the likelihood of graduation with his attendance issues. I just have to roll my eyes at this whole situation. One of my other students hit it on the head when he talked about how the student with attendance issues is always commenting and lecturing his peers on the importance of attending school every day but is absent himself. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I spent an hour working here this morning and 3 more in my classroom. Still not finished but I had to be somewhere. I've got at least another 2 hours to do tonight. I tossed all the stuff I used to use with my kids on work systems. Of course, now I need it so am making a bunch of stuff again. I figured I hadn't used in it over 10 years, and since I don't teach that type of kid anymore I wouldn't need it. Surprise! All this work for only 25 days.

I've got a meeting Monday afternoon with a student, his family, and JCO about the student's pattern of behavior. He has an established relationship with one of my associates because he is friends with her son. The bottom line for this student, who is a gen. ed. student, is that if she isn't working with him or if she doesn't ask him to do something, he is sitting in class. If he receives a direction for a non-preferred task like returning to his desk because of behavior or not working, he puts his hood up, head down, and shuts down. As a gen. ed. student, his options for moving on from my program are limited to an alternative school for gen. ed. students, which his attendance lets him out of, and his home high school.

As May start, I will have more meeting with parents as we plan transitions for those students moving on to other programs or comprehensive high school. Each student will have a meeting to plan for next year, so that will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 meetings. I will definitely have a graduation staff out, possibly two before the end of the school year, too. Gotta say, that's a lot of meetings.

Besides all the meetings, my schedule is fully booked with small group classes and individual projects to have students finish up as many classes as possible between now and the end of the year. So far, we are at 140 class completions. By the end of the year, I'm looking at being in the neighborhood of 175-200 completions. My predecessor's highest year for completions was 135. I'm very proud of myself and my students. My court liaison is also happy with the completions.

So glad Friday was an unscheduled day. Finally got everything off my desk. Have a full plate for the next week. Don't know if the parents who say they will be at the meeting will actually come. We are running out of time if these people duck their scheduled meeting.

PURPLESPEDCOW: That is a great accomplishment for your little guy.

I had a pretty quiet day, which was a good thing because I received a message from school this morning (not sure why it was 12+ hours late arriving) that my son had received an office referral for cussing with another student during literacy center. To say the least, I was quite on edge hearing that. On the other hand, his annual music concert was this afternoon, so I took off about an hour early and had a great afternoon watching him.

My student from the parent meeting called my court liaison today, so he will be coming back on Monday.

Want to hear something great? My little dude today started a meltdown, my para held arms, I held legs and made him sit in the chair as he was asked to. Within two minutes, he relaxed and told us he was clipping down (behavior management system in the room). He clipped himself all the way down to the bottom (six levels from bottom to top). Then he preceded to follow every direction and clipped up one level for each segment of the day until he was all the way to the top! He proved to himself that one problem early in the day didn't mean the end of the world. Usually if he had to clip down one level, it was over for the whole day. I was so proud of him, I took him up to the AP and she gave him a special pencil for doing an awesome job. Felt so good to end the week on a positive note with him!

Oh my, what a situation Heather.
I had a pretty crummy day getting to know the new student. Don't get me wrong, I've taught kids like this in the past and know what to do. The problem is I have 7 others that I'm supposed to be teaching full reading, math, and writing to. I spent the whole day seeing what he could do, waiting him out when he ran or threw himself on the floor, waiting for him to stop screaming, etc. He doesn't fit my class at all and I don't feel right dumping him on my associates while I teach. 25 days. I can do this, I can do this.

HDHAWK: I hope your job situation works out as you want it to. Sounds like it might be a difficult decision for you.

PURPLESPEDCOW: I totally hear you on change in a student's life. All of my students are involved with juvenile court, but when their cases close it is amazing what change comes over them.

My parent/student meeting this morning was uneventful and did not result in the student returning to class. He was unwilling to look at any of his behavior or commit to making any changes. He was sent home until he could call me or my court liaison and make a commitment to the program and changing his behavior.

Then, I had a near gang throw down in my room stemming from comments made on Facebook.
One student decided to go on there and make negative comments about a deceased student (died in an accidental shooting this fall). Needless to day, the students in my room who were friends and fellow gang members with the deceased student didn't take too kindly to the negative comments. Fortunately it was settled peacefully and the rest of the day was semi-peaceful. :)

HDHAWK sounds like a perfect position for you. Hope it happens.

I have one student who has been a pain for the past six weeks, after really turning his behavior around. I kept asking if there had been a change at home and kept being told no. So after finding out that dad was "out of town once in a while" (mom's words), I asked for the dates to see if behavior and dad being gone went together. Mom's note back "he leaves on Sunday and returns Wed. or Thurs." Yeah, nothing has changed at home. Think I will make a schedule for them to use at home so the kiddo knows the days dad is gone and the days he is home. Routine and schedules!

Boy, we're all feeling the pressure. I found out yesterday that I'm getting a new student tomorrow. Autistic, functioning at the 2 yr. old level, full time EA. I've taught these kids before, but my kids now are more moderate and all have academic goals. He isn't exactly a fit for my room. The full time EA will come from taking time away from my other kids to cover him. He's also a runner. In other words, we aren't getting any help for him. We're supposed to "make it work" until school is out. So glad I decided to switch positions.

On that front I have been asking my sped. director to create an autism specialist position for a couple years. We have a behavior specialist who goes to all the schools, helps problem solve, and set up plans. I wanted to be able to do that for our kids with autism. I also want to teach the social skills piece because for them that is as important as learning to read. Anyway, there was a possibility that would happen this year, then I was told that is wasn't going to happen. That's when I decided to take the resource position. When my sped. director came yesterday to tell me about the new student she said they had literally just decided to add a position like that to the middle school. It would consist of pulling kids out of class once or twice a week to teach social skills groups. You would also train general ed. kids how to engage kids with autism when they are out in the building. I've never really wanted to work with 6-8 graders, but I guess I've never done it either. They are still in the talking stages of how the job would look and they would have to post it. She said there is one person ahead of me on seniority but they probably wouldn't want it. I'm thinking it over. I would only have one "subject" to teach instead of every subject. Much easier (I think). I have a little time to decide.

Verbal conflict in my room yesterday, started by my biggest problem child. He was picked up by his mother, the other student involved was sent home on public transportation. The instigating student felt the need to lie to his mother, who promptly call me up to read me the riot act and cuss me out. I'm used to students calling me a b**** or a f****** b****, but really, for a parent to do it??? After the fourth time of her doing this in two minutes and not allowing me to talk, I finally referred her to my court liaison and offered the phone number. That student will be going to another alternative program rather than coming back to my program. A third student was suspended until a parent meeting for egging it on and attempting to make the situation worse. After that, it was a very quiet day, as I was down to three students between absences and juniors taking the ACT.

Today was another quiet day. I've got a lot of students absent right now. Sadly, one of those absent was one of my seniors who has a lot of work to do in order to graduate one time. Looks like I will be having a meeting with him in the near future to figure out what his plans are. He is off probation, but involved in adult court, and has not one checking on him to make sure he is attending school. What a mess.

What a day, barely had time to use the bathroom. Everyone has a crisis. Dealing with a parent who believes that he son is the only kid in the program and we should be giving him every service available, even if it isn't indicted. Another won't call me back to set time for a meeting. Found out that we will be getting a transfer from Sioux City, multiply handicapped youngster, in a wheelchair with a feeding tube. My supt. is on my rump about getting a student out of district placed. All the paperwork is at the facility, but they haven't made a decision yet. On my case as to why they are moving so slowly. Lord, I hope I can make it the end of school.

Another early dismissal because of snow. We left at 2 p.m. today. This will be the third time this one meeting gets changed due to weather. Where was this stuff in January?

Calling parents after supper. Can't get ahold of them during the day so have to call them at home at night. Got them all done, thank goodness.

My students seeming to find old and juvenile ways to do stupid things. Today, I had a group of students throwing pencils across the room. Of course, we couldn't actually catch them at it, so all I had was a bunch of phone calls to parents. I think I'm looking forward to tomorrow, though. I will have about half my class gone because my district pays for the interested junior to take the ACT, which is tomorrow.

May will be my busy month with meetings, meeting, and more meetings. I will, hopefully, have two staff out IEPs when my seniors graduate. *crossed fingers* I will also meet with each student and parent in my program to determine a plan for the student for next year. The requirement for participation in my program is involvement with juvenile court, which for most will likely not last through the summer, so those students will need to transition to their comprehensive high school or another alternative program.

My stupid sinus issues appear to be back, so I'm battling a sinus headache.

PURPLESPEDCOW: I was also glad to finish those tests. I managed to get all but one of my students to complete all the required tests. There were a few that only completed the required tests and not the optional stuff, but they still got in the required stuff. The one student I couldn't get done was because of absences that led to his being "unavailable". I'm still waiting to hear whether he will be coming back to me.

HDHAWK: I've also got the squirrelly kiddos. I've got a group of students who all know each other from the streets and are competing with each other for top dog, so to speak. Many of them are getting it under control, but I've still got a couple of problem children, one who is VERY, VERY disruptive. Some of it, I'm putting it down to spring fever because it just seems like it's more annoying than it used to be.

I had an interesting conversation with the tracker of several of my students. One of his students showed up REEKING of marijuana yesterday and we called the tracker and requested the student be dropped. Sadly the student didn't show up today, but that isn't unusual. Anyway, he gave me the low-down on several of my students. He also asked why my newest student was part time instead of full time, but was very understanding that we are over capacity and the only reason we could make room for anyone was for some to be part time.

Back to the weather... It isn't being very nice to me, either. I seem to be cold all the time and my body isn't dealing with it well. I never used to be cold, so I don't know what's happening. Besides that, it also means that Nick's baseball games are cancelled or I'm missing them because it is too cold for my two younger boys to be out for that length of time. Either way, I'm ready for some warmer weather. emoticon

That's great news Heather. It sounds like the ones that need to get things done are doing just that.
My kids were nuts the past 2 days. I'm chalking some of it up to our rotten weather. I hope that's it.

My year isn't slowing down at all. I'm working on redoing my schedule again to try and fit in everything that still needs to get done. So much to do and so little time to cram everything in. I've got a student who needs to complete 10 classes in 4 1/2 weeks. We have one staff completely dedicated to helping him. I have to say, though, he has been working very hard and being a leader. I've also got another couple of students who are doing a very nice job earning their credits and staying out of the "crap". I've got to say, though, as of today we have had 128 course completions. My predecessor's record is 130, which will be knocked out of the water on Monday, and we still have six weeks of school left. :) As hectic as it is, and will continue to be, I'm proud of myself.

I used the "grandma" cure today....I picked up my DGS from his day care this afternoon and spent two lovely hours listening to his talking and watching help his "PaPa" pick up the pinecones from the backyard. He is just too cute and definitely good for lifting the spirits.

What a day. One of our kids had a court date today. He will be on probation for approximately six months, but I doubt that he will still be with us by the end of the month due to the terms of his probation. He wasn't back in school for more than two class periods before he did what the judge forbade him to do. Another of our students had to be sent home due to verbally aggressive behavior to his para. The district is looking to place him in a facitilty. My little guy who whacked his para the other day, refused to work today, but just went to a corner and sat until 2:00 p.m. then told the teacher and para that he was ready to work and sat down at the table did all of his math, his reading work, and his phonics pages within 30 minutes. They are putting us in a winter weather warning for tomorrow so who knows what will fall from the skies tonight. Is it May, yet?

My regular para will be back tomorrow. Standardized testing continues to mess with my schedule. One student had a really rough day today. Then found out that the new paras they hired to help my students, among other students, won't have their contracts renewed due to budget cuts, then when my day can't get worse I get an email to expect a new student either for the remainder of this year or beginning next which will put me at either 11 or 9 students depending on the year. Okay five more weeks, I can do this.

PURPLESPEDCOW: Thanks for the well wishes for my Peanut. He is doing better already. Of course, he napped most of the afternoon, which is something he hasn't done in quite awhile. I've dosed him with Tylenol, given him his first dose of antibiotic, and just dosed him with ibuprofen before bed. He was already feeling better and doing a little bit of playing with his brothers between bouts of resting on the couch.

I'm very pleased with the students I had in class today. When I left, I only had four students who had showed up. Two more arrived, then one of my afternoon students came. All of them were well behaved and worked in my absence. While they won't get a tangible reward, I will definitely tell them how happy and how much I appreciate their good behavior.

PSC, hope your students do well on their tests, handle the schedule changes without issue, and your para comes back as scheduled. Don't forget to take care of yourself in all the chaos.

It's only Monday and I'm already wishing it was Friday. My Peanut didn't sleep for beans last night, waking up whimpering or crying every 30 minutes to two hours. He wasn't running a fever or vomiting, so I decided to take him to the sitter and head to work, thinking he was just tired. I was supposed to start and end my day with parent meetings, so missing work today wasn't a good idea, either. Mid-morning my sitter calls me that he has spiked a fever. Rush from work and take him to the doctor to be told he has an ear infection. Yea, he only has an ear infection. Boo, this is the fourth ear infection in six months and we are now waiting on a referral to an ENT to look at putting tubes in his ears. With this, I also have a rearrangement to my schedule: parent meeting tomorrow morning (instead of this afternoon) and another one Wednesday morning (intake from this morning that parent missed). I also have a parent meeting Thursday morning. On top of that, my oldest's birthday and night at Chuck E. Cheese is Wednesday, baseball Friday and Saturday, and the family birthday party on Sunday.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Next week begins the standardized testing for my county. Only one of my kiddos is taking the test, but the school is using the resource teachers, floating parapros for the testing. This means my kiddos won't have their regular schedule for five days, starting Tuesday. My regular para is out because her son had surgery (he is doing very well) and won't be back in the classroom until Thursday. I hope to just survive the week! Need to come up with some activities to fill in for the students missing resource in the morning. That is what I will do tomorrow afternoon. Saving grace is I have no meetings next week.

Spent three days in Pierre. That's almost a lifetime. The drive up was beautiful snow covering the prairie, blue skies and sunshine. Coming home today it was raining, 35 degrees and brown. The warmth and rain had melted most of the snow.

Too long a weekend with association business. Getting all the laundry done as hubby will head to Nebraska for business tomorrow. It will just be Bella and me, probably for the rest of the week.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I have been MIA. Just been very busy with school, baseball games almost every night of the week and double hitters on Saturdays. So most of my spare time has been taken up with just getting the bare nessiaties done around the house.
Sounds like everyone has been busy with school and getting the last minute things accomplished with their students. My kids are ready to be done with school! I got a new student last Monday. He is such a sweet kid! He fits in super well with the other students. So I am glad about that! He is partially blind so I have to make sure the other students don't get in his way or trip him. Makes for a stressful day just making sure he is okay and the others are careful around him.
Well I hope you all were able to have some time for yourself this afternoon. I took a nap, read a little bit and worked out for an hour. So now I am going to think about doing some laundry this evening and going to the grocery store. Sounds like a lot of fun, huh!
Well I hope to be better able to reply to the chat in the coming weeks. I only have about three more weeks of high school baseball games to go to. Then my life will get back to normal in the evenings and the weekends!

Wow, judging by the lack of chatting for several days, it looks like we are all very busy. I know the school year is coming to an end for most of us, and it is a busy time, but don't forget to take care of ourselves.

Well, my court liaison had told me I wasn't getting another student this year. She was wrong. I'm getting a new student on Monday. This will make 14 in a program usually holding 10. Several of the students are part time, though. In order to make room for this student, my student who attended one day then skipped three days before becoming "unavailable" is being dropped to half time on the premise that he didn't attend the first time, will likely be going back to placement since he has picked up new charges, and likely won't attend if he doesn't return to placement.

Friday was also the second CtJ meeting with one of the students suspended last week. It went well, and we're hoping to see some positive changes. The third meeting will be tomorrow after school. That meeting isn't guaranteed to have as positive results as the other two. This student really struggles with being quiet and allowing others to work. We see a lot of attention seeking behaviors from him, even when he is working with staff, but it is reduced when he is working with staff. The difficulty comes right now when we have so many students that we are not able to give him that 1:1 attention all the time. He is also a gen. ed. student who will be transitioning to another program at the end of the year. He will never have that level of support in any other program available to him. Guess I'll see what happens at his meeting tomorrow.

They called last night and said that school would be two hours late. I just got up at the usual time and looked out the window. There is about 5 inches of new snow on top of the frozen slush that was there when I went to bed. I know if I get in the shower, they will call while I am in there and say they are not going to have school. [Not that I wouldn't take a shower, but that means my husband who doesn't have to be to work for another two hours would have to answer it.] At least we have power. A friend called last night from Sioux Falls. She has power but many in Sioux Falls don't. The breaking tree branches are her biggest problem. All of the trees around her house are breaking due to the weight of the ice and snow. She just about lost the picture window in her living room. When the branches crack and fall it sounds like gun fire. Enough of this weather.

Kim, I hope all of your meetings went well today. I'm with you on the snow/ice. I don't want it.

Barb, I hope you are able to make it to your meeting safely.

I was right--it was a quiet day. I only had five students today and found out that one of my absentee students is once again accounted for. He will continue to be unavailable for school and I have likely seen the last of him, which also means I don't have to do his IEP amendment. :) Tomorrow is my first re-entry meeting. I don't expect this will be much of a problem, as the student is usually quiet.

Then there are my own children. Spring- and summer-like weather needs to come SOON. They are completely crazy. My oldest tantrumed for almost an hour and a half because he couldn't color at the doctor's office. He had been fighting with his younger brother and this was the doctor's idea to separate the two. Now they are wrestling in my living room despite numerous time outs and separations. I'm in DESPERATE need of good outside weather for baseball, bike riding, and playing outside.

have four IEP's left this year along with a meeting for a parent who couldn't be at the meeting we held. Yuck. Oh, well, this time next year I will be looking to retirement.

We're supposed to get some sort of snow or ice tonight. It's way too late for that, especially when it was 71 on Monday!
Just finished my last IEP meeting for the year. I feel guilty leaving my current position!

Still stranded at home. Have about an inch and a half of ice under the snow.

Supposed to have an IEP tomorrow at the Hutterische Colony. Getting down that road with that much ice is going to interesting. Hopefully I won't wind up in the Missouri River. That's if we even have school. Hoping we do. We're falling behind in the Dakota STEP testing.

Busy week for all of us!
I meet with the special ed. director first thing this morning, present at the staff meeting tonight with 2 other teachers, and then have an IEP. Last one of the year though.

Is there a full moon? Okay, I realize there really isn't, but my kids are sure acting like it. Three have gone home until parents can come for meetings and another two will continue in school while having meetings in the near future. That is a total of five meetings out of thirteen students. Really it's only eight students because three were absent and two had already gone home. It is going to be a quiet week, though, since the meetings won't happen until Friday.

Iowa Assessment is done tomorrow. I've got three students who haven't finished, but I can't test those who aren't there. One of the three will have an opportunity to finish tomorrow if he comes to school, so we'll see.

Thanks, everyone! Still haven't found time to work on my portfolio, though I did take a few minutes and start at least gathering everything in one place!

Meeting Monday went pretty well. Our EC director listened to my thoughts on the two students that were to be placed outside their home school and advocated with the home middle school for them to be there instead. Sad that she had to convince them that these two girls wouldn't be BEHAVIOR problems!!! (One just recently placed out of ID-MI, and is currently qualified under OHI; the other is ID-MO with speech difficulties, and they are the two most helpful, sweet girls!)So I have confirmation that they will be there and I will be moved there as well. My colleague will continue with self-contained at the other middle school, taking our other kids. We will call the parents tomorrow to begin discussing the changes with them. Most will be pleased, a couple may be uneasy about the changes.
Goal is for all materials, equipment, etc. to be sorted and moved by the last teacher workday! Lost to sort through and figure out who paid for what, what belongs to the school, what is EC, and what are personal items of various teachers!

Two excellent IEPs yesterday. Makes up for having to stay at a school board meeting until 9 p.m. Stepped out of the shower to pick up the ringing phone--no school. We have had an inch and a half of rain since midnight and now the temp has dropped below freezing. All my trees are glazed with ice. They say snow this afternoon. I dread that, usually that means broken limbs on the trees. Come on this is the 9th of April. Enough already.

KIM-POSSIBLE: Good luck with your portfolio. I know you can pull it together in time. I'm sure that once you get going on it, it will come together pretty quickly and easily. Also, good luck with your meeting tomorrow.

It has been a busy weekend for me. Got all the baseball things done. Other than yesterday's game, which was very cold and windy, it wasn't too bad. I also have gotten my schedule down to the very last day of school, who I working with, what we are going, and when. There really isn't room for any of my students to have behaviors or be absent if I am going to make it through my plans, but I've at least got them, and as long as I'm ready to follow them the responsibility will return to the students if they don't get to where they need to be.

Hope everyone has a good week. I'm starting my day tomorrow with a parent meeting. :)

Kim - just like everything else in Sped we pull it together in time. I am also already looking at next year. I will have 8 students, ranging from 3 in 2nd who will be in some resource, 2 1st graders who are beginning to talk (but can do academics at a K level), and 2 K students that don't speak much at all. Hoping neither of the new ones have any major behavior problems.

Kim: Good luck on the portfolio. I am sure you'll be able to pull it together, but it is just when to find the time. Isn't that the story for most of us in SPED, so much to do, so little time to get it done.

Linky, We had one who was violent and aggressive and had huge outbursts and ran through the building (and started running out of the building). Really just did not know how to function in a classroom setting of any kind. He bit a teacher, put a speech therapist in the hospital with a back injury, etc. We recently had to put him on homebound. This is not a solution, as he is only going to have his current behaviors reinforced. I don't know what the answer is for these types of students. This poor young man wasn't learning because everything was so focused on behavior management. Good luck with your student!

We meet to plan for what is going to happen with our program tomorrow afternoon. The middle school "transition" program is currently housed at the alternative school. Next year, we have only enough students for 1 class. I know I will be moved, most likely to eastern middle school into a hybrid inclusion/resources/semi-self-contained position (2 ec math classes, inclusion LA, reading resource). The Inclusion class may be moved to the western middle school, which is fine, except for the 1 8th grader and 1 7th grader that should go to the eastern middle school. I am going to advocate for them both to be moved to their home school so they are with students they will be with in high school. The 8th grader I know I can convince them to send to the eastern middle school, just don't know about the 7th grader because she is much lower academically and socially. Hoping it all goes well!

I haven't even had time to look at the requirements for my grad school portfolio that I have to present on May 2! I have to pull assignments from each course taken. I know I have everything somewhere, there has just been too much going on to try to locate and compile everything! I guess I better get to work on it!

LINKY, sounds like quite the little guy you have. Hope things get better for you with him.

It was an interesting week for me. I'm up to 13 students with a max of 10. Some of the kiddos are part time, so that technically means I'm at 11 students. I had one return from "unavailability land" for one day this week. He's supposed to be a senior, but he needs to complete 14 classes to graduate this year. Not looking too likely, especially with his attendance. I've got a new student who just joined me this week. He is coming from the state training school, so his transcript may as well be written in Arabic for all the sense it makes. He is a junior, but has the correct number of credits to graduate this year. That is the good news. The bad news is that even with all of his credits he is missing ten required classes. I talked to my court liaison yesterday, and she wants me to explore the possibility of using the prescriptive tests from E2020 with these two. I've also got another senior, but he is much closer to the mark. Bottom line is that I've got some serious planning to do this weekend to be able to meet their needs while still being able to meet needs of my other students. Cross your fingers for me...

Well, it was a pretty good week until my little guy lost it this morning and clopped the para in the face. It was pretty bad and they had to take a picture of the welt in case there is some who-ha about the injury. My prinicpal crawled all over me and then we went into the supt.'s office to update him on the incident. Supt. was a little more calm, but did warn me that he is concerned that we get a handle on this before the little guy starts on his peers. I assured him we have doctors, neurologists and psychiatrists working on this case with us. I have no magic wand to make this problem go away.

It was a good conference. We go back tomorrow and that will be more about the strategies. I rode with someone else and we only get an hour for lunch. I don't remember which school you're at Heather. I should come sometime when we have a day off. Or, we could meet somewhere.

Kim, come stop by my school. Visit my classroom if you get a chance. I'm not going, and I'm not connected with anyone from my district to know anyone who is going.

Had a good meeting with my court liaison and principal this morning. We just went over how the program is jelling and how the students are doing. Things are going well with us as a team. The biggest problem is the students who all know each other and are acting like fools to try to impress each other. In an effort to combat this, we had a parent meeting this morning and will have another one Monday morning.

It's hard to turn any kids away but you only have so much time and manpower.
I'll be in Des Moines tomorrow and Friday for an autism conference put on by Scott Bellini. Anyone from your district going?

RAFF: Glad you got yourself checked out. Even more glad you are okay.

Still working on getting my crew of students to buy into the program. The group of students this semester is vastly different than last semester. I've got 13 students, max capacity is 10, so that isn't helping. I had told my court liaison that I would never turn away a child because it goes against my beliefs as a teacher, but I broke down and told her we're full. At least she's in complete agreement. She is even working to get some of them moved on to other programs.

Hi Kerry. I have been there and done that. About 5 years ago. I had two years of every 6 months re-checks. and now 3 years of yearly check-ups. That mysterious spot never re-appeared. But do the re-checks. They will help you regain peace of mind. Stressful times.

Hi everyone,
Sounds like we are all busy with the final home strecth of the year. I hope that all of you that have IEP's, re-evals and state testing make it through that time with lots of patience and very little stress.
I had a health scare. I went for a routine mammogram at the end of Feb. they called and said that they saw a spot and wanted to do more testing. So last Friday, I went and had another mammogram done on that breast and an ultrasound. Told me that they were still seeing that small spot. That it was less than half a cm, irregular shaped, filled with white stuff and had jagged edges. Suggested that I have an ultrasound biospy done. So my ob/gyn referred me to a surgeon who specialists in breast cancer. I went today and they checked my results and did their own ultrasound and couldn't find anything. So they are thinking it was fatty tissue. I have to come back in 6 months and have a mammogram done before I go back. Guess what ladies, I am not going back to the place where I had my first two done. I am going to ask them to refer me to a place near their office. So that is why I really haven't been on here for a few days. I was kind of a little scared and depressed.
Well I better go for now. For some reason I am a very popular gal this evening. My cell phone just keeps chipping away with text messages from my friends and family.
Hope you all have a great evening!

Kerry

busy season ahead - four IEP's, two of which are preschoolers moving up to my program, one addendum, one re-evaluation meeting, and one going over an annual with the parent who wasn't there (but it was due to a death in the family). Spring break is next week and then we have standardized testing which just throws off my students schedules due to changes in the school schedule. Fun, fun, fun.

Wow, April 1. I sat thinking this morning about all the things I need to do with my students yet this year. Standardized testing starts tomorrow, too. I have one last IEP that I have to write and an amendment to do for a student coming from placement. The amendment will only be difficult because the mother doesn't speak English. The IEP is difficult because the student is unavailable. I will be copying/pasting a lot from the last IEP then calling the guardian. Since I don't have anyone needing the tests read, in theory, I will have at least 40 minutes of total silence each day this week to work on these as my students are testing. Keep your fingers crossed.

Year flying. We had only Fri. and Mon. off. No real break. We had a CE day on Trursday. Set all my last IEP meetings that day for April 30. So all af May we can relax and have fun. Alt Assessment will be done by then too.

Wow, this year is surely going by so quickly! Spring break this week, then we are out on May 23!

Still in limbo as far as next year. They have told me that I will have a job, just not certain yet where I'll be. Anticipating middle school ec math/ inclusion. We are having a meeting when we get back next week to determine what will happen with our current program and where those students will go. There are two middle schools in our district and the transition program likely will be moved to the other one from the job I mentioned above. I am pushing for the two whose home school would be the school I might be at to be placed there even though there isn't a true self-contained program there. We'll see what happens!

Almost finished with grad school, just a few more rationales to complete my portfolio and observations for my internship. Graduation is May 10, just over 1 month away! My son will graduate high school May 22 and turn 18 on June 1. Can't believe how fast the time has gone!

Struggling with a huge weight gain from meds I was on through the winter. Gained a total of 30 pounds over 6-8 weeks and it doesn't seem to want to go anywhere! Gotta keep pushing, though!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful year and heading into that final stretch!
