It seems like I have most of my students' IEP meetings coming in in the next 2 months. Goodness! Last year they were all at the beginning of the year. This year's kids all have them at the end. Wednesday I am having my parents in for a breakfast to look at their student's portfolios. So far, of the 4 that would come only one has responded. I hope I don't get all the food and have just that 1 show!

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

I've not been on the Spark site in a long time & just wanted you special ed. teachers to know that I'm thinking about ya'll. I hope that you all have a good rest-of-the-year!

I'm a retired Speech Pathologist--38 1/2 total years so I can relate with some of your challenges. I also understand that some things have changed since I retired. Hang in there!!!

It started snowing here about a half hour ago Heather. I'm wondering if we'll have school too. I'm supposed to teach in the morning, go to the 2nd half of a workshop we missed 2 weeks ago due to snow! and then have conferences until 7:15 tomorrow night. I have so much I want to get done. I hope we only have a late start. I have lots of spring break cleaning/organizing and graduation planning to do too.

I'm so jealous of everyone who's getting exercise. I didn't get any yesterday or today, and Wednesday is conferences, so none then. I'm looking forward to every minute I get in the gym this week. I'm not letting the stress of this weekend get to me. If my never-ending housework get done, it gets done, otherwise it will be there during spring break to catch up on.

I'm planning on going in early tomorrow, barring Mother Nature's wrath (aka snow storm) to prep some things for my newer student and those who will be finishing up credits in the next few days.

Thanks Kim! He is feeling much better today! He took it easy yesterday. I won't let him over do it.
Well I am done working out for the day. I did 62 minutes of my Just Dance 2 game. So I am feeling it right now. But it is a great feeling to have those muscles moving and contracting after a great workout. I think I might even take a walk this afternoon if it is still nice out. The sun is shining here in Ohio.
So what is everyone's plans for today? I hope you find some time to relax and take care of yourself!
Enjoy the sunshine!

Happy Saturday everyone,
Heather I am sorry to hear that your Peanut is sick! Hope you are not stressing out too much! :) Hang in there till Spring break starts!
Kim glad your principal came to your room. Sounds like your assistant really was helpful. Hope all goes well with your reeval!
Linda sounds like you are having some nasty weather! I hope you are enjoying the visit with your daughter and granddaughters. I bet daddy is getting a lot of home repairs done! :)
Hi to everyone else. I hope you are having a great weekend!
I had a very long day yesterday! I paid for it last night by overeating. Something I haven't done in a long time. Hope it doesn't show up on the scale on Monday morning. I am in charge of our school's Pennies for Patients fundraiser, so had to take all the change to the bank and put it through their self-counting coin machine. I filled up their bags in the machine, so the lady had to change them. That took some time, so I was late picking up lunch for my student teacher's lunch celebration with the sixth grade teachers, principal, assistant principal, and three other Specials teachers. Then I had to test the hardest student in my room for his alternate assessment. He was sick, but he is hardly at school so I had to test him. He did fine on the Math and then halfway through the Reading fell asleep on me. So I have to finish testing him next week hopefully. He doesn't speak, so I had to watch for his eye movements, smiles, smacking of his lips or hand movements for his answers. That was a really hard task. Then I tested other student in Reading. Now all I have to do is his Math on Monday. Had a little party with my students, aides, principal and assistant principal for my student teacher right before we all went home. Stayed late to do my copies and lesson plans for next week since I am back to teaching my classroom. Came home to my dh being in a lot of pain. He fell and hurt his right hip and back. So I took him to ER. Sat there waiting for the doctor to seem him, take him to x-ray, read the x-rays and give him some medicine. Didn't get out of there for three hours, then had to find a pharmacy open to fill his prescpriction. Stopped to get Chinese take out. I tried their shrimp and brocolli. It was really good! Came home and did two loads of laundry before going to bed. So today I am really tired. But I did run some errands this morning and dragged the brush from the front yard to the back the yard that came off the apple tree. I think I am going to go for a walk now to calm my nerves a little bit.
Chat with you all later.

*sigh* My busy weekend plans have been put on hold. I have a sick Peanut and Hubby is working all weekend, so I'm playing single parent. Wouldn't be too bad if Peanut wasn't sick. I have errands to run, both for school and home, that can't get done. I'm working on not stressing too much about it because then I feel overwhelmed. I guess what gets done will get done. Looking forward to spring break at the end of this week, though...

Was hoping to get out before the troops got up this morning and get a good walk in this morning. That didn't happen, as we are having a steady downpour. The only down side is that the temperature is supposed to drop this afternoon, meaning the rain will turn to ice and probably snow. Not a good combination, especially when the ice is covered by a layer of snow.

Made bread this morning instead of going for a walk. Don't think you get the same cardio from kneading, than you get from going 2.2 miles.

That's good news Heather! We had a workday so I got quite a bit done. I'll try to finish the rest next week in between conferences. We have to work M-W until 7:30.

I think a miracle has happened: My consultant was helpful on several fronts. I couldn't tell if a graph hadn't been created yet, so I called her. When she couldn't load the page either, we figured it out the graph hadn't been created. Then she told me of a re-eval I hadn't seen. This is for a senior and is due right around graduation time, but there are questions about whether the student will graduate. So, do the re-eval early or wait until I MIGHT be able to do the graduation staffing? She had an answer: do the re-eval. She was understanding when I said I didn't want to wait until the end of the month because there wouldn't be time to reschedule before the district deadline for IEPs, April 1.

My principal sat in my room for about 10-15 minutes. Not sure if this is my official evaluation observation, but things went mostly okay. Now to finish up my standards self-evaluation.

Today is a wonderful day. It is 7:15 and I am not backing out of my driveway like a madperson hoping to get through town and out on Highway 50 without mishap. Husband frowns on mishaps. Today is an unscheduled day in our district. We are on an alternate calendar at our district--some Fridays we work, some Fridays we do PD and some Fridays we are off school. Today on the school calendar, the block is colored yellow = unscheduled day. My internal clock doesn't contain the school calendar so I am still up at the crack of dawn. But I have done four loads of laundry and have cleaned up my in-box.

The granddaughters and their mother are coming for the weekend so that will be fun. [My son-in-law is doing home repair this weekend and it gets done faster without "the little helpers." The girls are 1 and 5.]

Have a great weekend everyone.

Glad you had a wonderful day Purplecow! An a great IEP meeting!
Kitty I hope your principal comes to observe you soon. My principal needs to observe me. So I think he is going to observe me giving the alternate assessment to one of my students tomorrow afternoon.
I did give it to one of my hardest students today. He sat still and paid attention. Here I thought since this kid is always on the go he won't do well for me. Boy did he shock me! I got through all three parts on the test with him. Now I only have three more to do. I am hoping to get two of them done tomorrow. Then the other one next week.
Hope everyone else is having a great week!

PURPLESPEDCOW: I had to opposite of your day. Mine was nice and quiet. I'm relishing it and preparing for tomorrow. Hope you have a quiet day tomorrow.

My principal still hasn't been in to observe me for my evaluation. I'm going to work with my court liaison on my teaching standards form tomorrow morning.

I had a snow day too. But I really wanted to go to school, because I wanted to test one of my students who won't be there tomorrow. I just want to get my testing in and not have to worry about it anymore. But I did enjoy the day at home. I slept in, worked out for an hour, took a nap, watched a little bit of tv and went shopping with one of my co-workers. Granted it was just to Wal-mart, but we still had fun. We bought a gift for my student teacher. Her last day with us is on Friday. So we got her a journal, pens, a heart-shaped key keychain (unlock her students knowledge), candle gift set (so she can shine her light on the world of education) and a pretty spring water cup that had purple, yellow and pink flowers on it. I hope she likes it. I am going to miss having her in my classroom.
Kim I hope things work out for your decision. Sorry to hear that your two meetings went over. Hope tomorrow goes well for you!

My day was kind of like that. 2 meetings that ran way over what I thought they would. Someone in my building may want the resource job I'm thinking about taking. Not all bad because that would mean I could take her job and stay in my school!

Okay so today was the day from *&^%! First off, picture day first thing in the morning - not bad, still had time for group and then the sh*T hit the fan
1) 5th and 1st grades switched specials time because of the 5th grade writing test which meant my para to support my 1st graders wasn't available to go so plan B let her take them to empty room during regular time and play games with them
2) 3rd grader who goes to resource at three different times couldn't go to two of them because of the 5th grade testing that the resource teachers were doing so I had him and the para that supports him in my room
3) I think the extra people in the room got to another child who shut down for the rest of the day and did nothing
This was among the tapping, humming, wandering and other noise in the room (3 people doing instruction gets a little noisy)
Just glad today is over......oh and the only change I knew of in advance was 1 of the resource segments!

Wow. Regarding Alt Assessment. We have 5 days, no matter how many students we have to assess. But we get a sub if we need one all week or just for half a day. That helps sometimes. Depends on who the sub is. Some cause disruption and chaos. Not what you need on test week. Ah well, ended up with a snow day today. Took away the last day of spring break.

Kim, I hope everything works out the way you want them to. Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.

Had some more movement in my roster, though it boggles my mind on how it came about. I've had this student for about six weeks. I am the third program he had been in in the last year. Student has serious problems following directions and expectations. He is unwilling to make even small changes to his behavior to allow himself to stay in my program. The parent was supposed to come in for a meeting a week ago and was a no show. We have since rescheduled or attempted to reschedule on a daily basis to no avail. Today, when given different options, she opted for her student to receive homebound instruction rather than be in school because she doesn't feel that he needs to learn to work with people he doesn't like and because she doesn't want to be inconvenienced by more meetings. Really? I just have to shake my head on this one and think about the space that opened up for a senior working to earn credits to graduate in three months.

Kim go with what your heart and gut say. I hope you don't lose too much more sleep over it.

Linda don't you just love getting pick for stuff like that when you are already on overdrive and overload. That is how I felt last week, having my IEP meetings on Monday, trying to get the alternate assessment packets together (4 of them) and meeting with the State Dept. of Ed. for Ohio to go over our Special Ed. dept. with them as part of their audit of our school district.

I am proud to say that I got two of my students alternate assessments out of the way today. The one little guy worked really hard for me on his Reading and Math. He was so proud of himself that he marched right into the principal's office and told him that he did his test this morning for me. Then this afternoon my 8th grade student took the reading, math and science assessments for me. I was very pleased that she behaved and didn't have an emotional outburst on me. Now I have to test my 7th grade student who is higher functioning. Then I am leaving my last three low functioning students to the last couple of weeks since I know that it will take me two or three weeks to complete them. Since I will have to do small chuncks of the test at one time.

Well I hope you are all having a great week so far!

Hope things turn out for you, HDHAWK. Those decisions are really stressful.

I woke up this morning to hear the wind howling. Guess that means some indoor exercise, but I just really want to crawl back in to bed. Naughty me. Have to meet with the Title I Director today. We evidently drew the "short straws" and are our district's personnel responsible for learning how to deal with the state's new longitudinal data system. We had a webinar yesterday at 3:30 to introduce us to the program. In the end we were told that we get to attend a series of face to face training in late April. (Great, they evidently don't understand what my calendar looks like in late April.) Oh well.

Thanks everyone. Part of me hates "throwing in the towel" on the kids I have but I'm tired of being the one who reads the books to learn new things (like doing lessons for kids on social skills that aren't even mine). Why don't their teachers learn how to teach this stuff. Oh yeah, they don't want to read books every weekend when I'm willing to do it for them. I have to be done taking on things that aren't mine. I think having 5 EAs is part of it too. It takes so much time every day to answer all the questions and things that come up. I have some time to decide and that's a good thing. I will have to let my principal know I'm putting the transfer in though. We do have a resource teacher who wants to be done this year, but as of now, she isn't going. That could happen too, in which case I'd stay at my current school.

Kim I know how you feel about being stressed and overworked. I would go to the school that makes you the happiest to be working there. That way you are able to love your job and it doesn't become a chore to go to school everyday. I hope that helps you.
Well today was a crazy day with a 1.5 hour delay so we could attend professional development before the kids come to school. My kids don't handle change in their routine well. So I had some over hyper kids today. The kick of it all was when my one students mom brought him to school late. I asked her if he was sick over the weekend then. She said no she realized she didn't give him in medicine Friday morning. Because I had commented on his eyes being very glassy and him laughing uncontrolably. I think she hadn't given it to him for most of last week. But I can't really say much more, because her sister just died unexceptly over the weekend. So probably the stress of her sister being in the hospital last week could have made her forget his meds.
Well I played volleyball this afternoon, until I got hit in the face with the ball. I have one super dozey of a headache. I am just praying I don't end up with a bruise or a black eye from it.
Well I hope you all have a great day tomorrow!

Thanks. I've decided to fill out the transfer. I can accept the job or stay where I am, but I have to turn it in before the 15th.

HDHAWK: You need to do what will make you happy. It sounds like you are being overworked at this school. I would put in for the transfer and see what happens.

So I need some opinions and I don't want to post this on the regular teacher's team because another staff member from my school is on that team. I'm seriously thinking about moving back to the school I was at before this one. We have a new principal and I like her very much. I have great EAs and would hate to leave them but I've been feeling very stressed this year. On top of every kid having lots of pull out minutes for reading, writing, math, behavior, and social skills I'm also teaching social skills groups to the kids with autism (2 who aren't on my roster). I also modify all the science/SS materials plus tests and quizzes. The gen. ed teachers in the other school do this for their kids. I'm the go to person for kids with autism at my school so gen ed teachers come to me for social stories and schedules for their kids who are on the spectrum but not served in special ed. I have great EAs, but I have 5 of them to manage. I would have one part time person if I move. There's no guarantee I'd get the job but it's a pretty sure thing with my seniority, etc. There are more things I could list here but I won't bore you with all of them. Thoughts?

I'm hoping they get these next couple of storms correct. The early out was okay, but we didn't have anything with this last storm and things were CHAOS!! I had kids not come in, buses running late, and squirrelly kids.

New student starting tomorrow...

I have a feeling this week could be messed up again. We're scheduled to have snow start about midnight and continue into Tues. They've gotten our last 2 storms wrong, so who knows what will happen. We've had early dismissal/late start 2 weeks in a row.

Just wanted to wish everyone a great work week ahead! I am hoping that my kids are good this week. The full moon and the weather played a major role in my kids not behaving like they should last week.
Heather glad you had a great time at your banquet last night. I hope you were able to get some of your stuff done today!
Kim glad you packed the healthy snacks and did the best you could at lunch. I hope you enjoyed your walk!
Hi to everyone else! Hope you had a great weekend!
I know that I did for once. Haven't had a nice, relaxing weekend in a long time. Probably before basketball season started. Now that it is over we have our weekends back. Yes!

We still haven't met in person Heather! Maybe this summer.
We just got back from the in-laws. Four hours in the car and then lots of sitting around and no control over the food. I did pack healthy snacks for the car and did the best I could at lunch. I think I still have enough ambition to get a walk in tonight. I have about an hour's worth of school work to finish too.

I have an IEP meeting on Tuesday, then one more after that right now. Not sure what I may be looking at as I have new students coming into the program. No alternate assessments for me. I've never done them, and I think I'm grateful that I don't have to do any this year.

I didn't bring any work home this weekend because yesterday was my tae kwon do banquet. (Kim, I was in your area.) Today I'm trying to get all my usual weekend chores done, but I'm really tired from the late night last night. I might consider just doing the essential stuff, cooking and laundry, and leave the rest for another day.

I have all my IEP's and ETR's done for the year. I just have to sit through four IEP's meetings on new students I will be getting next year at the end of March. I hope to have a major portion of my alternate assessment testing done this coming week. I have five of my students to test and then one student who is home tutored.
I hope you all had a wonderful Saturday. I know that I did. I did exactly what I wanted to do today. I didn't have to play beat the clock or nothing. Heck I even got the laundry done a day ahead of schedule. So now I think I will reward myself by finishing reading the book I have been reading for the last two weeks.
Have a great Sunday everyone!

I don't have any taking the Alernate Assessments this year. I am into the final IEP meetings for the year, but they are spread over the next few months. I, too, am ready for this year to be over.

Our Alternate Assessment tests are the end of April, 1st of May. I only have one testing, he is 4th grade, all my others are K and 1st. My 2 2nd graders were moved up this year. That is a real blessing for them (and for me). I just finished observations, reports and an IEP for a new incoming student, will start in August. Just turning 5. He appears to be lower functionally than any I currently have. Identivied as AU with very low cognition. Three years of ABA, and no reportable progress in any skill. We shall see how this goes. Another change in aides, so far so good. Have had a week with so much vomit, more than I have seen in 11 years in this room. ARGH. Thank goodness for a weekend.

Kitty I don't know anything about the high school level assessments. I teach in the middle school setting. I think our students have 2 and half hours to complete their tests. That would be the regular ed. students. Now for our Special Ed. students they have extended time until they finish it. Sounds like you will have a challenge on your hands trying to keep the 12th graders busy and occupied while the others students are testing. Could you give them a research project to work on during the testing time?
Hope everyone else is having a great weekend! It sure is cold and snow flurries outside right now. Guess I won't be trying out my new pedometer today. Too cold for me to be outside walking around the cementary.
I woke up this morning feeling crappy! I had a headache and cramps from that lovely tom visitor. So I laid back down for two hours and slept after taking some Midol. That seemed to help. After I woke up, I tried out my new Wii game that came in today's mail. It is Just Dance 3. Boy did I sweat on that workout today. LOL But I sure feel better now. Just have to tackle the dishes in the sink and three loads of laundry this afternoon sometime.
Well I hope you are all having a great Saturday!

I don't know when our assessments are, but I know they are coming up. I'm a little concerned about getting the assessments done with a mixed population. I've got 9th through 12th graders, gen. ed. and special education. Twelfth graders don't take the assessment, so those students should continue independent work, but not guaranteeing they will. Do the different grade levels all have the same time limits so I can have all my gen. ed. doing the test at the same time? What do I do with my kiddos who need the test read?

Our alternate assessment testing window is from Feb.25th through March 29th. I just got done with the prep work for the test packets. So I hope to be able to start testing on Monday. Then I volunteered to help give the Ohio Achievement Assessment to some of the Special Ed. students in April. Since all my kids will be done with their testing by the end of March. I just want the school year to be over. I am ready to send two of my kids on to the high school. They are my most trouble I have in the room this year.

Ours was in early Feb. Next week is conference prep, then conferences, then spring break. I can't remember a year I've been SO ready for a break.
