Thanks for the reminder that I need to put up the April chat. Roxell always did it and I'm not in the routine yet. It's colder here today too.

Although it is now April 1, I thought that I would put this on the March chat. I am off today as the district does not work on Easter Monday. We have a Hutterische Colony with a school and they don't work Easter Tuesday either. To make their minutes they have to put in a day where "town school" doesn't work.

Just came back from a CHILLY walk with Bella. Saturday it was 62 today when we took our walk it was 18. Have to love South Dakota, don't like the weather, wait a day it will change.

This next week we start D-STEP testing. That's enough to make your want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over you head. The state has really come down on the testing coordinators in the state and it sounds like there may be some "accommodations police" doing spot checks on schools to make sure everyone is getting the accommodations written in their IEPs. Good grief.

RAFF, your Easter sounds much like mine. I filled the Easter eggs yesterday, Hubby acted as the Easter Bunny hopping through the yard this morning. The boys had their hunt before we went for Easter brunch as my aunt's house. We also celebrated Mouse's birthday. It is officially on Wednesday, but today was the family celebration. He will be two.

I got in lots of rest and relaxation this weekend, but this is the first time this school year that I don't feel as though I'm rested and ready to return to school tomorrow. I definitely haven't done any of the homework I set for myself this weekend. Oh, well... I'll get caught up eventually. :)

Hope everyone has had a good weekend. Here's to a less stressful week next week than we all had last week.

Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter with your families! We had some of my husband's family over for dinner. Then we had an easter egg hunt outside for the three little ones. It was fun seeing them go for the eggs. But boy was I happy to see them go home. I was so tired after playing with the two great nephews who are both two and then cuddling with my great niece who turns one in a couple of weeks, I took a two hour nap.
Sounds like we were all busy last week. I know that I had two IEP meetings to go to at a different school, for the new students coming to me next year. I was so upset that they ran over by an hour. So that I had to hurry back to school and try to get my kids caught up on their daily work. This is the second time this year that it has happened to me. I guess these teachers don't think going over a three year re eval and and IEP takes more than a half hour time slotted for the meeting. Each one lasted 45 minutes. I guess next year, I shouldn't sit where I am facing the clock and thinking of things I need to get done with my class. Then Wednesday I had to pack up the alternate assessment materials and return them to the county office for shipment back to the test company. Thursday was our parent teacher confernences. Talk about a long night. The only highlight of the night was meeting my new student and his parents. He seems like such a sweet kid. He is blind and has limited mobility on his left side due to strokes he had as a baby, thanks to his biological dad who shook him. So I must say I might end up spoiling him just a little bit. Friday I had to go get some medical tests done. I have to go back and get one more done. But they think everything is going to be fine. Despite all of this craziness I have been doing really good with my eating and working out. Enough about me!
Kim I hope your transtion from your current students and parents will be an easy one! That must have made you feel good about the comments from the parents. Glad you are taking time for yourself and looking for less stress!
Heather I hope your dh is doing better! Hope he didn't pass it on to the rest of you! Sounds like you have some challenging parents you have to work with. Don't you just love it when they think you don't have a life outside of school or a family to attend to!
Barb glad the IEP gods were smiling down on your IEP team the other day! Did you get any walks in this weekend with your dog?
Hi to everyone else! Hope you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

Change is always hard. I know that I'm struggling with it as I'm looking to next year and my Peanut going into preschool. I loved the preschool/Head Start teacher that Nick had when he was in full-day Head Start. I also now that there are no full-day Head Start programs any more, so she does a half-day universal preschool and I'm hoping Peanut will have her for a teacher. Nick made such great progress and was SOOOO ready for kindergarten. I've also stopped into Nick's kindergarten teacher's classroom just to make sure she knows she can't retire for about five more years so that she can have both my younger boys. She also gave him such a great start/foundation that I want for my other two children. I know in my head that all the teachers are great, but my heart is somewhat attached to these two women.

I'm hoping to sneak in some relaxation this weekend. I know we just had spring break, but I'm SOOO tired. This sinus goop that I have is so draining. Supposedly I'm on the down hill side of this, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Hopefully getting some rest this weekend will make me feel better. Otherwise it is back to the doctor early next week. :(

I was new to 3 of the kids this year and I'm sure they didn't think their kids would only have me for 1 year. My replacement should be one of 2 teachers that I've heard very good things about. I'm not one to just walk away. I'll certainly available to help the new person. The parents and kids will adjust.

We have a teacher retiring from our staff after about 28 years. When we explain to parents especially those who have had another child with this teacher are horrified. We assure them that we will be doing business as usual, but there is some trepidation. People don't like change.

One of my paras ran into a parent over break. They're worried about me leaving, said they were shocked. They are wondering if they should put her in another school. Good grief. I'm not going to teach forever. I guess it's a compliment but there will be someone to replace me.

One of the blessings of my job is meeting with parents who understand that their child is hard to work with and can see progress being made in small steps. I had a meeting today with some of those parents and when they thank me for doing what I do with their son, I feel so good that it helps erase all the complaining parents who want everything for their child above and beyond what is considered equal.

The IEP Gods were smiling on us today. Had a deuce of a time getting one set up for today. We had to have it by April 2. Because this was an out of state transfer, we had to do a full evaluation. While she agreed to the evaluation, she was less than cooperative with the process. [Mother had earlier refused to complete parent checklists for the school psychologist because she found the questions too negetive.] Then she insisted that it would be more convenient for her if we had the IEP on Friday. When we reminded her that Friday is Good Friday and we don't work then, she went ballistic. We finally got her to settle on 12:30 today, which meant three people on our team didn't get their lunch, but she would at least come in. Today she came in 15 minutes earlier than planned and was the perfect parent, gave really good input and was happy with all the services that were offered to her child. [Sometimes I think they just want to screw with your mind.]

HDHAWK: I'm not familiar with that program, but it is a definite bummer that it is being cut. I just find myself rolling my eyes at the cuts being made in the name of the "fixing" the debt when there are so many other cuts that could be made to actually make a difference in the debt.

PURPLESPEDCOW: I always hate to hear about cuts to positions, full time to part time, and doing more with less. It's very difficult to do all the things we do with less and less every year.

Today has definitely not gotten better. My 5:45pm parent didn't actually get there until almost 6pm. Then an hour for the intake. I didn't get home until almost 7:30. My court liaison wanted to call it off, but didn't as a favor to me. She definitely made it clear to the student and the parent that we would not be doing this again. Know why she didn't call it off? I know I'm tired and it shows, and I know she is perceptive, but when her first words to me are, "you look tired," I'm sure it's REALLY bad. I told her that, given how manipulative this parent was and how exhausted I am, that I just wanted to get the whole thing done and out of my hair rather than continuing to reschedule, listen to her gripe, have her be late, and start the process all over again. I was hoping to get to bed early, but it isn't happening. One more intake this week, this one with limited English, so I'm really hoping for the week to end quickly (and quietly, since my students seem to think they can talk, giggle, and not work). Sadly, I don't think think the quietly is going to happen, as it looks like another one of my students will be arrested out of my classroom tomorrow or Friday. Just needs to end...

HDHAWK that is sad. That would be so wonderful for so many kids out there.
I am trying very hard not to listen to rumors about budget cuts - privatizing custodial and grounds keepers, cutting hours on classified personnel so they are part time so no benefits, furlough days. It is hard to listen to.

We have a foster grandparent program and the 2 we have are wonderful. The kids love having them here. We found out Monday that the grant that funds it is being cut by either state or federal govt. No more program and they get paid all of $2.65 an hour for being here. That should help the debt situation. Sad.

All of us are doing more with less lately. I know my county is beginning budget talks and the rumors are starting already about furlough days and cuts coming. I just want to know how I am supposed to teach eight children when six are basically non-verbal.

Wow Heather, what a day. I'm glad you husband is ok. I certainly hope he doesn't pass it along to any of you.
Geez, an intake at 5:45 p.m. People must think we don't have a life. I just had a parent ask me whether we could do a 3 yr. reevaluation this week (it's already Tues.). I haven't even started it and the consultant has to do the 6 questions. I told her no. Do they think all those pages get filled out on their own? Evidently.

JDB, glad you found us. Welcome to the team.

Kim, glad you are taking some steps to find some time for you.

This week just seems to be the week from _____!

Sunday was Husband's comment. Yesterday started with bus issues followed by a student escalating when given a simple redirection, followed by lots of squirrelly antics from a couple of other students. It ended with more bus issues, one of my associates hanging up on the transportation department, having to smooth that over, and having a parent miss an intake. First semester I had one of the most difficult and manipulative parents I have every had. Apparently I handled her well because I've been given her "twin". She biffed the intake time, blames it on me, calls my court liaison about MY unprofessional behavior in biffing the intake time, then was all appreciative when it was rescheduled for 5:45pm tomorrow.

Today started at 4am with Hubby coming home sick from work. Ninety minutes later I was calling for an ambulance. Ten hours in the emergency room and several procedures later, we finally got a diagnosis: severe stomach virus leading to dehydration and low blood pressure.

Tomorrow really needs to get better. Please, please, please don't let any of my children get the creeping ick.

Sounds like everyone woke up to some snow today! We had a dusting on the ground. It snowed off and on today but nothing to amount to any thing else.
Yes Barb my district is like that too. Squeezing inservices in on us during the summer! Sometimes it is good, but other times you just wish they would have done them during the school year. I hope your meetings go well today!
Geez Kim are you a busy women or what! How do you find time for yourself at times?
Heather I hope today was a better day for you!
Well I enjoyed my day off! I slept in, got up and worked out for 100 minutes, read the rest of my book, started another one, watched some tv and took a two hour nap. It was just nice taking time for myself without anyone begging for my attention or help.
Well I hope the rest of you had a wonderful Monday!

We have snow here too. So tired of it.
I've moved classrooms the past 3 summers. This will make 4 yrs. in a row, taught summer school and taken classes. I also tutor sometimes. Not much time off in the summer. Last year we went to Chicago for a workshop and did a book study too.

Give it a break Mother Nature, you seem to need work on calendar skills. I woke up to about two inches of snow on the ground.

Have meeting all afternoon and into the evening. The last one starts at 6:00 p.m.

Don't let anyone tell you teaching is not a real job because we get three months off in the summer. Ha-Ha! Most of us get stuck doing course work or other stuff that the district wants done during the summer when "we're not busy." Last summer there were five staff that had to go to Omaha for 4 days for a Common Core training. You didn't get the choice, you had to go. That meant three days way. (The district thinks we don't have families or children who would need child care for those four days. Lincoln freed the slaves, too bad they didn't get the word in my district.)

emoticon Heather! You work hard at your job and then come home to raise your three boys. Not to mention keeping the house! I hope things are a little bit better at home this evening.
My husband doesn't seem to understand that teaching Special Ed. students is a hard job. So after I get home from school, he thinks I should go non stop until it is time to unwind and go to bed. Then on the weekends, I end up trying to sleep in a little bit and then end up taking a nap in the afternoon to just rest up for the coming week.
Purplecow I hope your IEP's go smoothly for you!
I don't have any more to do for the year, but I have to attend two IEP meetings for students coming to my building next year on Tuesday. Then parent teacher confernences are Thursday night. I think they are way late in the year for the second go around. Heck we are starting our 4th nine weeks tomorrow.
Kim sounds like you will have your work cut out for you at the end of the year. I hope everything goes smoothly for you.
Well I really didn't do too much today. I did do my Biggest Loser At Home Challenge dvd. All of it for a total of 73 minutes of sweat burning. Now I am starting to feel it in my stomach and thighs. I did read some more of the book I am currently reading. I hope to finish it either tonight or tomorrow. I also did some laundry. Looking forward to having tomorrow off. I took it as one of my personal days. I don't have any major plans for it. Just relaxing and working out sometime.
Well you all have a wonderful Sunday evening!

Toddler proofing done, despite a whopper of a fight with my husband. I'm still struggling through it. It started when I continued with the plan we had set three days ago. I didn't think I needed to stop and rehash the plan, and when I didn't, it blew up. It blew up even further when he told me that he "works for a living", doesn't get a week off for spring break or three months off in the summer, and can't be expected to come home to a bunch of projects. Still fuming and hoping some Sparking will help me. So far not so successful. I'll definitely use my time at the gym this afternoon.

I haven't heard about the new IEP version. That will be interesting. I'll have more of them to do next year. Quite a big homeless population in that school.
Good luck with the toddler proofing. Back to work tomorrow!

Kim, have you heard about a new IEP version coming this fall? My district is mandating all IEPs due in April, May, and September be done by April 1. I'm fine, other than my two graduation IEPs, which there is enough question on whether they will make it that I can't do anything about them. One of the two also has a 3-year re-eval due in May. That is the student who is currently unavailable, so I guess there isn't anything I can do about either situation for that student. Good luck with your move. I left notes and plans for each of my students when I left my old job last year. I left a set for the new teacher and a set with my school social worker. When I turned in my resignation I also volunteered to meet with my replacement to go over each student, strategies, etc. No one took me up on it, and my school social worker was messaging me in Facebook asking be about stuff in October.

I'm doing a little Sparking before taking Nick to baseball practice. Then I'll be coming back to start the cooking and toddler-proofing. I'm hoping the job looks bigger than it really is. The room isn't messy, per se, but tends to be "mom central storage". I keep all the old clothes boxed up in that closet, plus diapers and wipes. It just doesn't always get put away right away, so the various boxes tend to pile up. Crossing my fingers that that is all it is.

I'm with you Heather. This snow has to end!
I have one more IEP in April and then end of the year progress reports. I'm also going to write up specific materials/strategies I use with each child so that when I leave the new teacher will have a place to start. I just can't walk out without leaving notes like most teachers do. Then it's on to planning summer school and packing for that, then packing everything else to move it to the new building I'll be teaching in next year. The end of the year will be here before we know it!

RAFF, Wow, what a parent. I'm also getting a rep when dealing with parents: Kill them with kindness. My court liaison is giving me some problem parents just because I'm great dealing with them. She is also coming to me for curriculum for complicated situations because she knows I'll come through. So far she's done it twice. Glad it all worked out for you in the end.

Tomorrow is batting practice for my oldest then the cleaning, organizing, and toddler-proofing the younger boys' bedroom. I'm also cooking. I've also got some work to do to get ready for returning to school on Monday. Mother Nature doesn't look like it will be cooperating, either. I'm looking at getting 3-6 inches of snow over the next couple of days. Really? Snow at the end of March? Only in Iowa, I guess.

Oh I forgot to tell you what happened with the parent I was trying to get ahold of to give her daughter the alternate assessment test. I finally got ahold of her this past Thursday. I explained to her who I was and why I was calling. She just could not understand why I needed to come test her daughter. She informed me in no uncertain terms that her daughter was serverly mentally retarded and couldn't pick up a pencil to do math problems or read to me. I told her that I would do the reading of the test questions and look for a respone from her daughter. She was just very negative and didn't have a positive thing to say about her daughter. She finally agreed to let me come on Tuesday afternoon after school. But when I told her I might have to come back on Wednesday to finish she went off on me again and told me that they had busy lives and I better wrap it up in one night. Then she asked for our Superindents name and number so she could call to report me to him. I was so furious after I got off the phone with her. I called the county office to get them a heads up she was calling. By about an hour later, the county office's secretary was calling me back and told me that I didn't have to go out to their house to test her. They are just going to mark down parent refusal to test. I thank my lucky stars I don't have to be in the same room with that woman. She offended me by calling her daughter that and then saying all she can do is lay around and stare at the ceiling. She had no compassion what so ever for her daughter. Thank goodness she is an 8th grader. The high school can deal with her in two years for the OGT Alternate Assessment.

Thanks Heather and Kim for the well wishes! It felt alot better today until I sat out in the windy air for the stepsons' baseball scrimmage. But I did come home afterwards took my medicine and took a nap.
Heather I hope your husband's job situtation turns out fine for you all. I know what I big worry that must be for you!
So how is everyone else's weekend going? I hope great!
I was a little upset with my dh after the boys' scrimmage, we went to Wal-mart real quick to get some groceries and I was eating my last package of Skinny Cow Peanut Butter Creme. He took the last piece out of three to try it. Said boy that is good! Then couldn't understand why I got mad at him. You don't mess with a woman's chocolate. LOL Especially when we hadn't eaten anything since this morning. So I was just a tad bit hungry.
Well I hope you all have a wonderful evening!

RAFF, hope the mouth guard helps and you get to feeling better.

I'm still slowly working on the algebra answer key. I know that I have students doing the curriculum, and I should speed up my pace, but I just can't force myself to. Oh, well, as long as I'm ahead of my students I'll worry about it later.

I had a couple of wrenches thrown into the works today. Hubby came home from inventory today and told me that his schedule is changing starting this coming week. Instead of working both days of the weekend every weekend, he will have every other Sunday off and work Monday. Part of me is okay with this, as I will have some time to see him and he'll be home for some of the more intense house projects. Then there is the part of me that looks at the budget. Guess we'll see how long this lasts. There are also continuing rumors that the company will be closing down all but the highest producing stores, which would include his as being closed. We're still playing a waiting game on that front.

My other wrench is another cleaning/organizing project: Toddler proofing the bedroom my youngest two children share. It became a necessity today when Mouse decided he wasn't going to take a nap. What did he do instead? Jump out of his crib. It's a toddler bed for him, but I want to make sure there isn't anything he can get into before I do that. emoticon He's growing up so fast!! emoticon

Hi everyone,
Heather sounds like you have had a nice Spring Break. Glad you got some household and school chores done.
Barb that is so scary about your spinal mengitis scare! I hope your co-worker is getting better. Glad that they shut the school down and cleaned it really good! We have the flu going around our school district. I hope it is over with soon.
Hope everyone else has had a great week!
I am sorry to have been MIA. Developed tooth pain on Monday night in the middle of the night. So I thought I could teach on Tuesday. I made it through the day but went to the dentist on Wednesday. After x-rays and a dental scan, found out that I have nerve damage from gritting my teeth during the day at school when things get stressful and also could have happened from the volleyball to the face two weeks ago. So now I am to wear my mouthguard to school all day long. So that is what is new with me. Pain now just comes and goes. So I am hoping when I go for my recheck in two weeks it will be completely gone.
I did treat myself to a sub from Subway for dinner tonight and rented Magic Mike off the cable box. It was nice to have some time to myself after the hetic week I had at school. Glad that we only have nine more weeks of school left.
Well I hope you all enjoy your weekends!

LINKY: Glad it sounds like everything is working out with you and your co-worker.

As for my son, I know he is taking his meds. I watch him put it in his mouth, watch him wash it down, then wait until he talks so that I'm sure. I don't think he would deliberately not take it if left to his own choices, but I do it because of his age: He's six. I'm wondering if he has hit a growth spurt and the meds aren't as effective. His teacher has noted some increased emotionality when told to do non-preferred things (i.e. spend more time on his writing or put his lunchbox in his backpack). He's trying to eat me out of house and home, too. I put him on the scale and he has gained two pounds. I know it isn't much, but he has stayed the same 45 pounds for the last year or so.

Of course the issues with my boys aren't just one sided. My middle one is just as responsible. I'm just out of ideas on how to get them to settle down and be nice to each other.

We think that we're going to be fine. The state's infectious disease people are giving us the thumbs up so I think we will be all right. We are just taking precautions with extra hand washing, and heightened disinfecting activities.

Kitty, is it possible that he isn't really taking the meds? I had a student I had to watch whenever it was med time as he could palm the pill and we would find them later.

LINKY, I hope everyone is okay.

Spring break is coming to an end. I've done a great job of relaxing and recharging while getting some classroom and house stuff done. This afternoon I'm going to tackle my last big project: folding laundry. I've got about 6-8 small baskets to fold. Shouldn't take long, and I don't know why I can't seem to get it done on a regular basis, but there is it.

Anyone got any thoughts on how to get my oldest two boys to get along? I'm very tired of the fighting, squabbling, hitting, kicking, and yelling. Time outs and time apart don't work. They are either ignored or go right back to the behavior as soon as they are allowed back together again. I plan activities, both at home and in the community, but we end up not doing them or leaving early because of their antics. It's starting to wear on me. This is also the second day in a row that my oldest is acting like he hasn't had his ADHD meds, when I know he has.

Well just when you think nothing else could go wrong.....
They sent everyone at one of our school home at 1:30 today because of confirmed case of spinal meningitis. The staff person was hospitalized today and as soon as they got the last kiddo out the door, the janitorial staff began a massive, clean and sterilize sweep of all the classrooms.

Yipes, what next?

I know that is sometimes difficult to hear. I have always looked forward to hearing about my new roster students. The part I dreaded was talking to the current roster teacher because that person was either was very negative or overly optimistic. The results were that the child was scheduled too much or too little with me the first semester. Right now, I know that I have a number of students returning next year and a waiting list forming. That bodes well for me and job security. :)

I've been going a little bit of work on some answer keys while on spring break this week. Not doing anything overly strenuous, just a little time here and there.

Kitty - so sorry about your kids. I understand you being upset about them being more upset about the toys than you being upset. May I make a suggestion - take back what they found, get something else but smaller, keep it in your trunk where they can't find them but the day before Easter have them do something for charity - cards for servicemen overseas (you can goggle for different addresses of places doing that), or cards for your local hospital. Then explain that people like to get surprises, but they also like making surprises. It will help them see the difference, then after their quiet time the baskets can make an appearance on your table.
I just hope Monday is not a repeat of Friday. Four meltdowns is way too many. I think the time change caught up to everyone.

LINKY, sorry you don't get a very long spring break. I know some of the smaller school districts in Iowa do the same thing. They usually have more snow days and choose to not have a spring break every year so that they don't end up going into the middle of June because of snow days.

Kim, I know you didn't just say snow. Really, more snow stuff for us? Glad I seem to be getting my running done this weekend. I don't avoid driving in it, but if I don't have to, so much the better. :)

RAFF, hope you have a better, and more relaxing, day tomorrow. Good luck on your test too.

Today was okay until nap/quiet time in my house. My oldest doesn't take a nap anymore, and my middle one is trying to do the same, but I still want them to have some rest and quiet time. Nope, wasn't destined to happen today. Instead, they snuck into my bedroom and snooped through the birthday and Easter stuff. Then, they don't see a problem with anything they did or why I'm upset. I debating taking their stuff back since they are more upset with the idea of not getting their Easter present than the idea that Mom is upset. I was going to prep the eggs for dyeing tomorrow. I also thought about making a homemade version of a Shamrock shake tomorrow. The cake was going to be from a box, but it was something we could do together. I'm hoping sleeping tonight will put me in a better mood because I don't want to do any of these things with my children being as ungrateful as they apparently are. I get that they are young, 6 and 4 respectively, but their whole focus was on the toy, even when I was angry and crying over the ruined surprise and family time.

Linky, we had the same crazy weather here. Nice Thurs. and yesterday, colder and windy today. Some sort of snow mix forecast for Monday.
Sorry about your peaceful weekend being disrupted Raff. We all need a little break from the stress! I hope tomorrow is a better day.

Hi everyone,
Kitty sounds like you have your spring break mapped out. I hope you get your stuff accomplished. I bet your boys will like dying Easter eggs and baking. What are you going to bake?
Barb we have the same schedule. So I know how you feel. Hope the testing goes well for you!
I had a crappy day! It started first thing this morning with dh starting a fight with me. So I went grocery shopping by myself. Then came home and tried taking a nap due to having a headache. Didn't sleep much but just laid in bed enjoying the peaceful time to myself. Got up after dh left to go run a few errands. Went to lunch with my stepdaughter at Subway and then came home and did and hour workout. That seemed to help me until everyone came back home. Then the peace and quiet was blown right out the door. So now I am in the computer room playing on the computer to try and get out of my bad mood. I guess what really bothers me the most is he knew I had a crappy week at school and was looking forward to relaxing this weekend. Plus I have a medical issue that I have to get more test done on March 29th and that is looming on my mind. Oh well just hope tomorrow is a better day! If not, I will just have to live with it!
Have a great evening everyone!

Kitty:
We are on an alternate calendar and we have no spring break. We do we get Good Friday and Easter Monday and then we slog on til the end of the school year. We come back from Easter Monday to start the testing window for Dakota STEP. That's like dental surgery without pain killers, so by May Day everyone is looking forward to the last day of school (May 23) if there is no snow day before that. I shouldn't have even typed that. Yesterday was 52 degrees and beautiful weather to walk. Today it is 23 and windy. There is a little snow coming down. I have crocuses in the back yard that have come up but are trying to decide if they should commit to blooming, or if they are going to be dead by spring (which officially starts the 21st).

LINKY, hope you get a spring break after all those meetings.

RAFF, good luck getting that final alternate assessment done. Sounds like you used your budget to the hilt.

So far, spring break has been taken up with household shopping and errands. I had to get baseball cleats for my oldest and sandals for all. Easter is coming with my oldest's and youngest's birthdays on its heels. Anybody got ideas for birthday presents for a two year old who inherits all of big brothers' old toys? I think I'm going to hit the pantry cleaning on Monday and have Hubby put the finishing touches on the bathroom on Wednesday. The weather doesn't look like its going to cooperate to allow the boys much outside time, so I'll be planning inside activities. So far, I'm prepared to dye Easter eggs and so a little baking to keep them occupied. Nick also has baseball batting practice tomorrow morning. I might start tackling some of my school work this weekend. I'm not too anxious about it, though. It will all work out and get done.

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all enjoying the start to your Spring Break or weekends!
Barb, sorry to hear about your long day of meetings. Glad you got a walk in with Bella! I hope your brain isn't mush anymore!
Heather don't you just love parents who feel like we are forcing them to take an active role in their child's education. Sounds like you have a nice Spring Break planned! I hope you accomplish all your tasks and enjoy relaxing to the hilt!
Kim glad you have made your decision and that you are peace with it! That is always a plus. Sounds like you have started to a little spring cleaning in your classroom. I bet the other teachers will appreciate the freebies!
I had a productive day at school. I helped one of the other Special Ed. teachers finish giving the Math Alternate Assessment, got my work folders ready for next week, emailed my lesson plans to my principal and assistant principal, filled out my personal day forms , professional development forms to attend a two day workshop about planning multi-years of functional curriculum for students who take the Alternate Assessment, wrote two rough drafts of letters (one to a parent who I am trying to get ahold of to test her daughter and the other one asking for a continuing contract since I am up for renewal) and wrote up a purchase order for supplies. I had $116.44 to spend. I spent $116.40. So that was almost to the penny. I haven't had a day like this in a long time. I was pleased to walk out at the end of the day with a very light totebag. :)
Well I better start thinking about going to bed. It has been a long day. I hope you all have a wonderful and healthy weekend!

Had four meetings today and I am just shot. Started with one this morning at 7:30 a.m. and got done with the last one at 4:50 p.m. My mind feels like mush.

Did get a walk in the evening with Bella the Pug. It was so nice tonight I didn't even have to wear a coat. Wow!

Kim, glad you have made your decision. You seem very happy and at peace with your upcoming change.

Last IEP meeting this morning was okay. Statements from the parent made it very clear she was there out of obligation rather than an interest. We went through the transition information and the reason that we start looking toward after high school, then five minutes later she asked why we were talking about all this stuff that doesn't currently apply. Got through it and submitted for my consultant to approve.

I got my evaluation today. She didn't follow procedure, but there wasn't anything in there that I didn't know I need to work on. There were liberal amounts of praise for working with my associates, particularly my more difficult one, and my enthusiasm and effort for learning the methods and procedures for my school district. d

Spring break officially started at 1:45, but I didn't get everything set until 3pm. I have a couple of projects for the coming week. On the homefront, I would like to get my laundry back under control. Everything is washed, just not folded and put away. I would also like to clean my pantry and put the finishing touches on the bathroom (had a new window put in and shower added, now need to do some touch ups and re-hand the towel racks). For school, I have a couple of answer keys I need to work on, one algebra that I have to do the work on, the other Earth science that I'm copying answers from a list for onto a copy of the worksheet. Bottom line, not too many things planned, not too busy, so I'm going to have plenty of time for rest and relaxation, of which I plan to indulge in to the hilt.

I filled 2 trash bags before I left and put some books/puzzles in the lounge for other teachers to choose from. Trying to get ahead a little on the cleaning out since I'll be moving buildings (almost for sure at this point).

Congrats to the people who are on Spring Break! I hope you enjoy it and get a lot of rest while on it!
Kim glad you are done with your confernences. I hope you get a lot done in your room.
Heather I hope your IEP meeting went well. Sounds like you have a real winner of a parent.
Today was another day of the same child screaming, kicking and crying. Today's crying was one of "Hey I am in pain". Since the child can't talk, he kicks people or hits them when he is frustrated. We took him to the nurse to see what she saw in his ears and mouth. His ears were a little red and his mouth looked sore. So she was to call the mom and let her know. Mom didn't answer naturally. So I had a headache when I came home from the stress of trying to keep him calm and still teach the rest of my class. The only thing I can say that was positive about today was I got to finish my alternate assessment on my last student. Now I am trying to get in touch with the homebound child's mom to set up a time to come out and test her. But mom is not answering the phone. So I guess I will have to ask my principal what he thinks I should do about it, she doesn't answer my calls tomorrow. Time is running out and I only have four or five nights available after school in which I can do it in. Oh well my new motto is "It is what it is" . Guess I better log off and get read for a little bit to try and relax.
Have a great evening everyone!

I just finished my last conference and have another 3 hrs. to work in my room until spring break officially starts. It's not very spring like outside, but I don't care. I need a break in a big way. Sounds like a lot of us do!

Janine, hope your breakfast goes well.

I'm down to one IEP meeting tomorrow with a parent who may or may not show. This is the parent of the student who requested homebound instruction. Homebound isn't going to happen. In fact, he's coming back to my program after spring break. *roll eyes*

Got an upset stomach tonight, too. Hoping I'm not getting the creeping ick but am having a stress reaction. Planning to get a good night's sleep in hopes of combating it.

Hi everyone,
Sounds like we are all having a challenging week! I don't know if it is the weather, time change or just need a break from school. My kids have been awful this week. Today was really bad. A parent sent her son to school still sick with the flu. He literally ran up and bounced off the walls. If he was not doing that, he was trying to kick my one aide or myself. Plus he was trying to pinch the fatty part of our underarms. Our assistant principal saw him in action and said to call the parent to come get him. We were not putting up with this behavior today. Plus his hands and face looked like red hot embers from a fire. Mom came to get him 30 minutes later. She lives like 10 minutes from the school. Boy was that a long 30 minutes. Then I had a student show up late for school, due to blood work. She got mad at me first thing, because I won't let her eat breakfast. Mind you it was 10:20 and lunch for her was in 30 minutes. Got her over that and then it was one thing after another with her all afternoon long. I found out her mom didn't give her meds to her this morning. I told her that tomorrow she better have them in her system or it was going to be a long day for her. I had to come home and take a nap.
Barb I understand what you mean about people saying there is a problem and then not wanting to come together and help find a solution for it. I hope the snow stops too. Hope things go well for your evaluation.
Janine how was the breakfast? Did any other parents show up? That is a great idea to get parents to come to school and see their child's work. I hope it went well for you.
Heather hope you are able to survive until Thursday at 3 pm. How was confernences tonight? I will have to think on the manipulation comment. I have to admit you are right he is a master at it.
Hope everyone is doing great!

Spent most of the day doing evaluation in one of our outlying schools. Loading all of the stuff in the car and it started to snow. Just hope it knocks it off before morning.

Trying to set up a staffing for one ouf our ED kids whose behavior is slipping. It's like herding cats. Everyone wants to complain, but no one is wanting to put time in time to discuss how to turn this around.

Breakfast for my parents tomorrow to show them their child's portfolio before it gets sent to the state. So far I have had 1 (yes I said 1!) parent respond that she is coming. I bought over $70 worth of food for one flipping parent????? I really hope the rest show tomorrow. It will be ridiculous if they don't.

It is going to be an interesting week. I have an IEP meeting for my student going to homebound this Thursday. I should probably get busy on it, since I haven't started anything more than the date and meeting notice. Nothing like a little procrastination. Not sure if I will have to do a re-eval that I was supposed to be doing. Student is likely not longer in my classroom. That was short lived, only three days and one an excused absence due to a transportation flub.

I've got conferences on Wednesday, but schedule is rapidly dwindling. My room was in a state of flux last week with students transitioning in an out. I got settled again toward the end of the week only to have more flux this week. My court liaison really needs to watch what she wishes for. (She wished for movement in my classroom.)

With all the craziness, I'm hoping to survive to 3pm Thursday.

Totally off topic of students, anyone have suggestions for a 6 year old manipulator? My son is starting to become a master. Three weeks ago, he manipulated his teacher into letting him go home with a friend, whose mother also happens to be his Wednesday after school babysitter. Please note, it was not a Wednesday that this happened. Last night he manipulated his babysitter into letting him use his brother's blue toothbrush, so now I have to swap them out. He is becoming a master, and I want to nip it in the bud.

Sounds like everyone is busy with IEP meetings, evaluations by their principals or testing. I know what you all are feeling. Hope the snow didn't stop you from going to school and getting your items done that you had planned for today.
Today was the first day of not having my student teacher. My kids were sad for the first couple of minutes. But we got out of our funky moods and got right down to starting our work. We fell back into our routine pretty quickly. I was able to finish testing one of my students for his alternate assessment. So now I only have to finish up the four reading tasks with my one other student and then all my kids will be done. I even stayed after school to submit their scores on-line. I have to also give it to a child who is home bound due to medical reasons. I tried calling her mom all afternoon and got a busy signal. I hope that I can get in touch with her soon and set up a time to come meet with her and her daughter so I can give the test. My first plan was to have them all done by this Friday. But I don't think that is going to happen. So I will now push my deadline back to next Friday.
I did weigh in this morning and lost another pound. So that is a total of five pounds lost so far on the school's Biggest Losers contest. I hope to reach 15 to 20 by the end of the contest. But will be happy with a lose either way.
Our parent/teachers conferences are not until the 28th of March. We get out of school on the 23 rd of May. So I think conferences are a little late this year.
Well have a great evening everyone!
Well I hope you all have a wonderful evening.

I still have to finish my portfolio to turn in when asked next month. That will take me a while and I never seem to find the time during the day!

had my last walkthrough by the AP last week. So now all that is left is the final meeting for my evaluation for the year! Down to 3 IEP's for the year! Hard to believe we are down to the last nine weeks.
