The end of a wild week. Have lots of work that needs to be done this weekend. Hope that I can get through it all. I really need to get some exercise in because I haven't gotten my quota in this week. I hate that.

Thanks for the warm welcome back Kitty! I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Sounds like you need sometime away from school. :)
Kim glad that everyone is okay. I hope you get answers about your job situation soon. That has to be a little scary.
Hope everyone else is doing okay! Enjoy the weekend! Hopefully you don't have any IEP's to write or work to do for school. :)
Today was a crazy day at school. First my student teacher was covering a class all day because we didn't have a sub for it. So there went my time to start giving the alternate assessment to my students. I had a hyper, wild sick child. He is the only student I have known to run around, bounce off the walls, laugh uncontroally, kick and hit people when he is sick. Mom finally came the last hour before school was out and said Jeez I hope he isn't getting the flu, my granddaughter just went to the doctor's today for it. Then because he was a little wild child, the other kids started acting up. Then to top it all off with I had afternoon bus duty. So I am glad that the weekend is here. I hope to relax and enjoy myself!
Well it is time to go pick up the stepsons from baseball practice. Hopefully we won't have teenage drama with them this weekend!

KIM-POSSIBLE: Glad son is okay and that you and your family are feeling better. Hope your job situation resolves to your satisfaction.

RAFF: Glad to see you back.

Boy, I'm glad today if Friday!! Can you say CRAZY? That has been my week. A student arrested Monday, another one had a health "crisis" of his own making, Tuesday and Wednesday had weather issues, yesterday was a threat that resulted in a student suspension and 15 phone calls to parents, juvenile court officers, and trackers, and another bus situation. Today the bus issue continued, but was a quiet day over all. I really needed that.

Tomorrow is my tae kwon do banquet. I'm planning on indulging and expecting the scale to be up again this week. I've got a plan to get everything back under control after that. ...At least until April when my oldest and youngest both have birthdays within two weeks of each other.

Been a little bit since I checked back in. Things have been crazy with strange illnesses (kids have had mono, severe allergies to favorite foods, pt for appendicitis that turned out to be ovarian cysts, and on).

We had a planning meeting today to look at projections for the next two years of self-contained classes. My colleague and I teach middle school transition. The numbers don't add up for us to maintain two classes. Number are high for resource and some are carrying more than they should. This all adds up to mean that my colleague and I will be facing big changes. Instead of being able to divide our students based on their needs, they will become one class with one of us. More than likely, the class will move from the small alternative school to one of the county's middle schools. One of us will move with our kids. The other will move to a resource position, but we don't know where. The EC director anticipates someone retiring, but isn't really positive that someone will.

After talking with a friend who teaches high school inclusion and ocs, I'm thinking resource might be a good change for me. We'll have to wait and see what happens!

Came home from that meeting to run kids to practices, etc. Hadn't been home long when DH called to tell me I needed to pick up our daughter because ds had been in a wreck! Everyone was fine and the damage wasn't too bad.

Hoping to just enjoy my girls' soccer tournament this weekend and not worry about everything else for a couple of days!

Hi everyone,
Sorry to be MIA for awhile. My life has been crazy busy for a few months now. First with my dad's cancer surgery, then me being sick over the holidays with sinus',a ton of professional development in Jan., writing IEP's and ETR's, attending stepson's basketball games, getting the altenate assessment test materials ready and sitting in on a group discussion with the Ohio Dept of Ed. yesterday about our school's special ed. dept. , now I finally have time to breathe and do things for me.
I hope you have all been healthy and fine. Hope life is going well for you. I hope to check in more often.
Take care,
Kerry

I hear you on keeping people happy. The crazy weather (only supposed to get a couple inches of snow and end up getting 9") has put buses late, unable to reach a couple of students, unhappy parents, and a transportation department on edge. I've been on the phone apologizing and coordinating students and trackers.

I've also had some student movement that is resulting in me getting more students. I've got a new student coming in full time, another possibly going full time from part time, and a third possibly coming in part time. emoticon It's a lot to keep track of.

I'm still making it to the gym. I'm working with a wellness coach at the YMCA to help me get over the boring workout hump, but I'm still going, boring or not. My eating isn't doing that well, but I've come to the conclusion that I'm okay with the scale not budging. It isn't going down, but it isn't really going up, either; I'm losing and gaining the same five pounds or so. I figure I'll take this year of adjustment and change to get a handle on things then be ready to really work on me again in the summer and fall.

I hear that! I am trying to finish my portfolios (due April 1, but will be finished by Friday), attend mandatory state training (2x a week for 8 weeks), teach the portfolio workshop I am the instructor for (3 more Wednesdays!), do my volunteer work (I am the Relay for Life chair for our event), keep my house in order, and work! Jeeeez....I am tired.

My husband is installing the new wall shelves as I type. (He is not happy about it, but he will be fine.) I am determined to claim this house back before it makes me crazy, or crazier. It has been too long. My doctor believes my increased energy is due to the weight loss. Almost 50 lbs done in a year and I feel a difference in my energy level as well as my motivation to get things done. When I finish this house I may have to hire myself out. This one may take a while though. It has been years since I have cleaned like this.

JIACOLO, I hear you on putting off home stuff to get school stuff done. Anytime you want to tackle my list of house stuff that I've put off, you are more than welcome to it. Hubby and I are planning on cleaning out the pantry during spring break in three weeks. We are going to put Nick in YMCA day camp for a day so that we can get it done. Then there's the bathroom... I still need to change out the cabinet and vanity to finish up the remodel.

It was another day... My student on the autism spectrum from Friday had another day of illness today. This time it was a coughing spasm that wouldn't quit because he wouldn't let it. My court liaison decided to send him home because it was affecting the learning of others. The consequence is that next time he does it she will either take him down to her office at juvenile court or he will have to make up the time on Saturday. After that, I had the police come for another one of my students. This is the second time this has happened, so I can say that at least they followed our request to use "our" door instead of coming in the main doors of the building and disturbing the preschool.

For now, off to the gym to relax.

I had planned to go to the school to work a day or two during the vacation, but I did so much here at home that I just couldn't fit it in. All those projects that I have neglected here because of how much I work are now are on their way to being much better than ever before. It feels great knowing I am leaving home this morning having gotten a lot of housework accomplished.

I just traded e-mails with my school psychologist about my little guy we believe is on the spectrum. We can't get the mom to fill out the stuff we need on behaviors she sees at home. She states that she isn't comfortable filling them out because if she replies, she feels her responses are too negative. Okay. You want your child receiving special education but you don't want to detail what his deficits are? I think we have enough other data that we probably can probably make a classificaton without her input, but I have a feeling this isn't going to be the easiest of meeting. The kid came to us on and IEP but his assessment data was screwy so to make sure he is eligible in SD we had to do some assessments. This woman moved into our district to live with a man she met over the Internet. The man she moved in with is just a shade of center, too. Never a dull moment here.

This is my last day of winter vacation and I dread going in tomorrow. I have one ed tech out (He is in Mexico!) I have been in my room almost every day this week. I still don't feel ready. I have so much paper work to do. I enjoyed going to the gym this week without feeling rushed and tired.

I feel the same way Heather. I've been working since 9:00 this morning on an IEP and various other things for school. I'm making some changes to the way I do things and it all takes time to prep. I'm hoping to carve out some extra time during conference week to get a few more things done.

I have a little over two and a half weeks before spring break. I'm looking forward to it. There are a lot of changes I would like to make, but they need quite a bit of preparation, so won't be ready until next year. Right now, for me, it is all about pushing through to the end of the year. Maybe I will feel differently after spring break.

Today is my last day off from the winter vacation. I dread the next stretch of time as we don't have time off now until March. I don't normally look forward to days off, but I have a few projects I started that really need more time to be finished. I also start mandatory state training 2x a week for the next 8 weeks. This is going to be a tough time to add this into my already busy schedule. It will be good to get it over though. I doubt I will get much gym time though. Oh well, I will adjust and work harder on the weekends.

Here in GA we have to show three notifications - notice, phone call, parent contact, email note home....so if we send home 3 notices and get none back as long as we document we can hold the meeting. We just can't go over the year date for the annual meeting. That is why I have 4 meetings next week! Hopefully all go well.

Wow, the only way this can go it up, hopefully. Here in SD we can hold the IEP if we can document attempts to get the parent to the meeting. Usually the state here says two attempts and then you can hold it. Some of our districts, especially on the reservations, have trouble getting the parents in. You would have been good to go in SD.

It is a district rule to start scheduling the meetings 30 days before the IEP due date to theoretically allow for multiple meeting attempts if necessary. The thing it assumes is that parents will waive the 10-day notice and that everyone has a working phone. Ironically, had I actually started 6 weeks before the IEP is due, the parent had a working phone. Whether he would have showed up for the meeting is another story. This parent apparently told the student he didn't have to come to school on Thursday because there was going to be an early dismissal and it would be a waste of time.

I was definitely ready to get out of there yesterday. Sadly, my rest and relaxation day has blown up in my face. Hubby locked his keys in the car, so the kids and I had to drive across town to give him the spare. He had developed a sore throat over night, so he was off to the clinic. Now he is off to rest himself. Me resting? Not so much.

Geez Heather. I'll bet you were more than ready to get out of there. We have the 10 day notice rule, but I can start the IEP whenever I want to. I may set up the meeting without having it started. I wonder whose "rule" that is since we live in the same state.Have a good Saturday!

Just need to vent... It was a day!!

Today wasn't called a snow day like we were expecting and talk about chaos!! I had two students called in sick and another one not show up. A fourth one was absent because the parent didn't send her child because she thought it would be a snow day. Still another parent called that she wasn't sending her child to school. Why? Because of the weather. We send a bus to the door. Sorry, it is an unexcused absence. Parent was not happy.

Still one more of my students claims to have hit his head when the bus curb checked. He's more dramatic than a teenage girl. His headache was so bad he was weaving around the classroom, couldn't keep his eyes open... He slept the entire day.

Then there was the afternoon students. One came in thinking he could do whatever he wanted and be disrespectful to one of my associates while I was dealing with the just-mentioned kid. When he refused the opportunity to correct his behavior and demonstrate the correct behavior, his parent was called to pick him up and we'll be having a meeting before he comes back. She refused to come pick him up and told me to release him to walk up to the bus.

Drama three (which turned into four, five, and six, too)was a supposed parent meeting at 2pm. Didn't happen. Juvenile Court Officer came, tracker had talked to the parent to remind him of the meeting just yesterday. Part of this meeting was to discuss his less-than-desireable attendance and the other part was the IEP. Since the parent didn't show up, now I have to show multiple attempts before submitting, of course. The parent does not have a phone, so I have to send a letter via snail mail with 10-days notice (can't count on the student to deliver). The IEP is due March 6th, and 10-days from today would put it overdue, which is unacceptable (drama 4). Asking my consultant what her recommendations are yielded a chastisement that I hadn't started the paperwork 30 days prior to the due date (drama five), which I actually had, and no concrete answers. Drama six was explaining my correct steps, including involving the JCO and tracker in helping to contact the parent, without screaming at her and telling her we had had this conversation two weeks ago when I actually started the IEP. I'm very fortunate that my court liaison also tackled this situation. She also sent an e-mail to my consultant slapping her into her place, telling her I had started 30 days ahead of time and hadn't helped create a plan of action so the IEP would not be late.

Drama seven has to do with referrals to a special vocational program. I had two students specify an interest through general conversation, which I passed on to the transition consultant. One turned out to be ineligible; the transition consultant came yesterday to interview the other one. I had a third crop up through my own error (same student with the headache from the bus today). I wasn't going to say anything or continue the referral process, but the kid took it to his parent, who called me for more information. All I asked the vocational consultant to do was call the parent to answer her questions, since I couldn't. Nope, she chose to interview the student blindly and has determined he isn't a candidate. Duh!! However, she passed on the issues with the referral to my principal, who passed on the issues to my court liaison to point out my error. Really???!!!!

It was just a day. I definitely need the weekend to recover. Here's hoping my own boys sleep in tomorrow.

Yep. That is exactly it. I showed my list to my court liaison today and told her to feel free to add stuff to it. She totally understands that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed and am putting off non-essential stuff to the summer for next year.

I can relate to that. I have 3 notebook pages of stuff to do. When I cross one thing off I seem to add 2 more.

Yep, no snow yet, here, either. They keep pushing it back; now it's supposed to start between 3 and 4 this afternoon and got through much of the morning tomorrow. We were one district that had an early out even though the storm hadn't started. I'm prepared for a snow day, but don't really know if it will happen. Maybe this will be one of those storms where the Wintery Apocalypse is forecast and never appears. We're also supposed to get hit again Monday.

I had a good meeting with my principal and court liaison. I've got another kiddo coming in next week again. The safety plan looks good. Rules on cell phones and computer usage were reinforced. She wants a schedule for associates by tomorrow/ and a better one in place for next year. My summer project list is growing. :)

Maybe ours won't start until later if it hasn't started for you yet. They are saying 1:00 and some schools have already posted early outs. I have to finish data today plus get some baseline for a kid's IEP. That way, when we're stuck at home again tomorrow, I can get it done!

Well I got one evaluation finished but my little guy on the spectrum didn't get the memo that we needed him to cooperate so that we could get his assessment finished. The positive thing is that the snow that was suppose to start at 3:00 a.m. hasn't made and appearance, yet, so there is hope we will get this assessment finished before the snow flies.

Boy, I agree with that. This is my 26th yr. teaching and it gets tougher and more complicated every year. Not to mention all the extras that are thrown our way. I'm hoping for school tomorrow and would love to be there Friday, but like Heather, I imagine we'll be at home. I have an IEP next week, with very short notice due to parent schedules so I can always work on that. More days to make up in June.

Kitty: You are not alone with the feeling of being overwhelmed. With all the changes in special ed and common core curriculum, I think all teachers are feeling overwhelmed. I know that I am. Things that used to be "the way to do things" are no longer the way things are done now. I have been doing this for over 25 years and feel like the list of tweaks are getting longer. My word of wisdom is "this too will pass". Allow yourself time to get comfortable with what you are doing and remember you are needed!

Interesting day... I'm going to have one kiddo go to placement, had another one that was supposed to be coming to me go back to placement, and I'm getting another two kids. There is also a waiting list for my program for next school year. I'm basking in the glow of job security. :)

I'm not sure if we will have a half day off tomorrow with the snow storm, but we'll probably have a fourth snow day to make up Friday, just because of the timing of the storm. In that case, I'll have to reschedule my IEP and CtJ (come to Jesus) with the student and JCO.

Yea, that was a compromise a couple of years ago at negotiations, because we put in about a week extra than what the state says we have to do. Last year we didn't have a single snow day--but we also had a horrible drought. This year we've had snow and then 40 degree weather so the snow melts and then just runs downstream. This next round with snow sounds a bit ominous. We'll see. I have evaluations to do so I am sure we won't be able to get to school for days.

This seems to be an overwhelming time of year. Conferences are right around the corner, we've had sick kids for weeks, and now a storm is on the way. I could go for an early out on Thurs. but I don't want to miss another day. We don't have any freebie days!

Kim, I'm glad you chose to work out instead of working. I think it is great that you are taking time for yourself.

I'm also hoping we don't have any more snow days. Three is plenty. We're in school until June 4th as it is.

I think I've figured out why I'm so tired: I have "first year teacher syndrome". I'm not drowning, but I'm definitely in the deep end of the pool and treading water. I talked to one of my associates and my court liaison, and both of them are VERY understanding that I'm not looking to make major changes before next school year. Then, I've got a growing list of stuff I want to tweek or overhaul. Don't get me wrong, I'm still thrilled with my job, just getting overwhelmed my stuff. Tomorrow is an early out day, and I've got time to work in my classroom, so I'm hoping that will help.

LINKY, hope things work out and calm down for you.

I was hoping this month would even out, but things just keep getting crazier. I am hoping the weather forcast is not correct. We have already lost two days to weather, I don't want to miss another. We have three days in our calendar that we don't have to make up. If we have another that is the end of the freebies and we will to have to make them up.

Substitute speech therapist started today, taking over for our speech therapist who walked out on her contract (she didn't like working with kids). Our sub is familar with the district as she was a long term sub three years ago. So the learning curve won't be as steep.

Now if we could just control the weather,,,,,,,

We had school today and I'm hoping we don't miss another day or two. We already have 3 to make up. I had quite a day. Had a 30 min. meeting during lunch which actually lasted 60. No lunch, then parents after school who stayed for an hour. Didn't leave until 6:15 tonight. Brought work home but decided to work out instead!
Good luck with the IEP Heather!

I had a day off today, and we're bracing for a snow storm and probable snow day (or two) later in the week. I've got an IEP Friday (and come to Jesus with the student), so I'm not sure what is going to happen with that.

Don't know about anyone else, but I've been tired! Heading off to bed earlier again.

My family helped me to finish my 2 cereal box book reports and 1 pizza box book reports for class. Next I have a few papers to type but it's okay. I also exercised every day over my five day weekend. I also completed walking everyday for two years on Sat. Go me, I am still walking every day.

We have next week off for Winter Vacation. I am very excited about this given that I was sick during the December break and couldn't enjoy it. I may go into work one day though to get some things done that are too hard to do with the kids there. Our alternative portfolios are coming up due and I want to get them ready to be finished the week we return. Our teacher portfolios are not do for a while, but I want them done too. I'll have access to the copier and a quiet building. It will help me go far and not have to plan to stay at night when we get back.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

I've got a three-day weekend and one IEP next week. I'm looking forward to a weekend with some extra rest. I don't know why, but I'm exhausted. I go to bed early every night, but I don't want to get up to my alarm the next morning. I can definitely say that it is a physical thing rather than a mental thing, but the bottom line is that I'm tired. I've also got an IEP to write and a little bit of work/preparation to do in addition to the usual weekend housework. Rest is still my priority, though.

Oh brother!!
One of my EAs has applied for another job. If she gets it she'll be gone in 2 weeks. She's the one we reprimanded the first week of school. She has done much better. I always love it when they decide to up and leave mid year.

Yep, I'd be boiling, too.

My day was quite interesting. Remember my associate who thinks nothing applies to her or the program? Today was supposed to be the big meeting about the roles of associates next year. She took a half day of sick leave to get her driver's license renewed instead of going to this staff meeting. Guess we'll see what happens next...

I need to vent ... please feel free to not even read this LOL I'm sure I will ramble and it will be long and I can't even guarantee it will make sense ...

The handicap-accessible bathroom is in my classroom - to get to it you have to come all the way into my classroom (it's not like right inside the door or anything). None of the students in my class this year are in wheelchairs, but there is a little girl in the MI class across the hall in one. Her teacher doesn't have room for the Solo lift in her classroom, so the lift lives in my room as well. It's really not a big deal, it lives in the "bathtub" room which is mostly storage anyway. The little girl and a para come in a few times a day, but the para is really good about being very quiet and discrete - my kids have gotten to where they really don't even pay them any attention. (this is all background and really has nothing to do with my story LOL)

We have recently hired three new parapros in the sped department and they all float between several classes for inclusion and whatnot. So apparently they needed to be trained on how to use the Solo lift (why, I'm not sure - there are already like 5 people trained on it and the one para is the ONLY one who ever uses it because we only have the one little girl who needs it ... when that para is out, there are at least 5 other people trained that can handle it) but anyway, the new people needed to be trained.

Without consulting me about when would be a good time, or even telling me that it was going to happen, the PT comes into my classroom today with all three new paras and the little girl. She proceeds to provide a 45 minute training session with them on how to use the lift - WHILE I'M TRYING TO TEACH! They are all right in the middle of my classroom, talking at a normal volume (maybe even louder), literally in the middle of our math lesson (and through our movement break, social studies mini lesson and into our first center rotation). Of course, my little munchkins aren't distracted by this at all (ha!) and continue to pay attention to me and the lesson (right!).

I just cannot believe that it never occurred to the person who set up the training (the MI teacher), or the PT conducting the training to consider maybe taking the lift into another room (or even the hall?) for this, or at the VERY least giving me advance notice so that I could take my kids to the library or something ... and of course, me being the "I hate confrontation" person that I am, I didn't go up and ask her "can you not do this somewhere else", but seriously, she had to see that it was completely disrupting my class ... a few of my kids kept running over there to where they were and we had to chase them down, she had to hear me continuously trying to get my students' attention ...

I was LIVID ... I did send an email (to the MI teacher and the PT) politely asking that next time a training session is scheduled to take place in my classroom, I would appreciate them consulting me and trying to conduct it when we are at specials or lunch or at the very least giving me advance notice because I felt it was very inconsiderate of and disrepectful to my students and myself to just come into our room and disrupt instruction for almost an hour, and I cc'd the principal. I kept the email professional and polite but my blood has been boiling all day about it.

I had a day of unsuccessful manipulation by a couple of students. One thought he could give me puppy-dog eyes to get his way. Hah! Got that one covered. Between my own three children at home, I'm well immune to that. Then there was the other one. He's on the autism spectrum and pounded on the window this morning. When corrected he blamed his peers then faked sick in an effort to go home. When that didn't work he claimed a headache bad enough to make him not be able to do any school work. That didn't work either, but it made for a long day.

What. A. Day.
One of my paras went home sick around 9:30 and they were unable to find a sub! They pulled the "floater" para into our room for the whole day, but she is already in here for 2 and a half hours anyway, so during that time we were still short a person ... it made for a very busy, hectic day (especially since it was picture day and their schedule was already thrown off).
But we survived, which is what matters I guess LOL

When I first started teaching, I had two not-so-good paras (EAs, IAs, whatever LOL) ... they had both been there for years and did not like this little young girl coming in and switching everything up (making them work) - they didn't last long (one lasted a year, one lasted two) ... my next set were AMAZING - one of them went on to become a sped teacher, and the other two went to work with her when everything got all screwy at the end of last year (not by their choice) - so now my entire team is reassembled without me LOL
One of the two I have now is very good, the other one does her job relatively well but doesn't let a day go by without reminding us that she doesn't like the kids (she worked in the severe/profound room for 20+ years and got moved to my room in all the screwy stuff at the end of last year and was/is not happy about it) and would prefer "sitting and rocking the babies in the profound room all day" (yeah, our SID/PID teacher works really hard with the kids ... smh)
Just wanted to jump in on the para/EA/IA woes :-)

I have had some horrible EAs over the years. Hearing all your stories makes me even more grateful for the 5 I have now. I would give 4 of the 5 an A++ and one a B. Not too shabby! I'm very grateful.

I think dealing with my classroom assistants (TA, IA, paraprofessional, etc) is one of the most difficult parts of my job. I have one who is a one-on-one for a student. The district has left these two together for 6 years. I do not find the relationship to be productive and have been pushing for him to get a new assistant. She would be happy to work as a classroom aide instead, but the process is not easy. She is a decent person, but frequently goes MIA or uses the computers for her personal business. She does not like to follow my morning routine and will often change it. I have to ignore some things because of it. My other two assistants are not equipped to do the job effectively, which creates way more work for me! I can honestly say in my 12 years in education that I have had a handful of good aides. The rest? Eh.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.
