I'm one of those going back tomorrow. I've been doing some work from home these last two weeks, but my classroom was also left in disarray thanks to the same blizzard as Kim. :) I've still got a few things I would like to get accomplished before tomorrow, but I'm not sure my children will allow me to get them done. They are exhibiting some serious tantrums and arguments. I think they are getting serious cabin fever...

I go back Thurs. but some schools around here go back tomorrow.
I'm going out to get my classroom in order since I walked out on Wed. and didn't end up going back at all due to the blizzard.

Happy New Year!!

Just today and tomorrow for me to gt a few more things done and ready to go back to school on Wednesday. Today was all about getting some of the house chores done: Goodwill, grocery store, pharmacy... My Mouse is the third child to fall to an ear infection during vacation.

Tonight I'm planning on hitting the gym then taking the kids to a family-friendly New Year's celebration. After that I am planning on taking them to Jolly Holiday Lights, a huge light display where the proceeds go to Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The pjs are a litte snug, but good motivation to forego the leftover Christmas cookies.

It is snowing here! Totally amazed as I didn't think there was that much moisture left on the drought striken prairie. Yahoo!!

I had a great xmas. I can't believe that I gained no weight. Stress of shopping over!!! hard when you can't drive, hard to find the little things, big things can be ordered! I can drive again, thankfully. Physical therapy going well. Doctor said I can go back to work! Great sub. She was in my room for two months. Everything corrected, organized in portfolios, grades recorded, she even left three days "sub" plans for me so I don't have to worry over the first week back! Awesome. Went in on Friday for the student party and so I could network with her. Kinda worried. Start back with a list of issues to deal with. 5 IEP meetings scheduled. I still tire easily no more naps. Ha! Plan to set the alarm clock this weekend so I can practice getting up. Happy holiday everyone!

My husband gave me Steelers pajamas, but he bought them a size smaller than I usually wear. He said they looked like they would fit. Maybe he's trying to tell me something. I haven't tried them on yet.

I hear you. I've also got some work to do. Just before break, I ordered some student textbooks from Amazon. Didn't spend much money, but the teacher's editions are MUCH more expensive, so I'm creating answer keys. It isn't hard, there's no rush, and I'm still getting plenty of relaxation. I'm also working on getting some more specific classroom rules set up. They are printed, I just need to glue them to construction paper in preparation for laminating.

I'm also looking forward to getting back on my "normal" workout schedule. I have missed my gym time. Hubby gave me a new gym bag that I'm anxious to break in. :)

Wow. In our district, our classified staff (para and everyone who works for hourly) have a "work agreement" but right in their work agreement it says that they are "at will" employees, and may be discharged at any time. They have done it, too. I have a principal who doesn't like one of my paras, basically because she calls it as she sees it. She is an excellent para and works miracles with some really disturbed kids. He has told me on two different occasions he is going to the superintendent and have her fired. (Usually because she has bucked something stupid he has said, or done.) I know he is looking to me for support, but I usually agree with her (I just don't say it). Anyway since I don't say, "yeah, go ahead," he knows if he comes to the superintendent, the supt will call me up and I will say I still want her. So he's dead in the water. Basically he needs to put on his big-boy tidy-whities and deal.

Hey, Merry Christmas everyone. Got to get going, the grand kids are coming in this afternoon.

I've got nothing to add. I've got one of those problem associates. My court liaison has spoken to my principal about her, but nothing changes. As far as I know, I don't have a special education director to take it to. I wouldn't be comfortable in doing that anyway. My court liaison has spoken to my problem associate about her tone of voice. I've also brought it up to her. She wants to put behavior monitoring on myself and my other associate. My response to her (and my other associate's, too) was that if we are working directly with students, we are focusing on those students. Since she won't work with students, the bulk of the behavior monitoring will fall to her. It isn't that we don't notice it. My bottom line is that I'm going to keep working on her.

If they have shuffled this person from place to place they should know that she isn't able to carry out the duties that have been laid out for her. What magical power does she have that keeps her employed in your district? I would have thought by now someone would have written a plan of improvement for her and she would not have complied, so she would be unemployed.

I think the worst part of my job this year is dealing with staff! I have 3 (1 is a 1-1). They all make more work for me than they help. One in particular is that aide that every district has that has been moved from room to room and school to school. She can't copy, won't diaper, and doesn't understand how to work with kids on the autism spectrum. I encourage, reteach, state firmly, and model and still nothing seems to change. On top of it all, she is one of the most miserable people I know. She truly makes my job more difficult. The administration knows and understands. I only hope they make changes for next year.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

My principal is non-confrontational, so she won't do anything. I've talked to my court liaison about it, and have taken some steps, but they seem to go out the window after between 1 day (sitting at the table and helping students) to 2 weeks (only me or the other associate correcting the kiddo my problem associate has targeted). My court liaison has also been working with her on her tone with the kids (tends to be short, barking, and negative). She was in meetings all afternoon, or I would have talked to her about the whole situation. Hopefully tomorrow.

I ended the year with issues with an EA (after I had talked to her several times and documented all of it). I started the year with her giving me problems on day 1. I decided I couldn't take it for another year and went straight to my principal who even called the special ed. director. She was told to shape up or she would lose her job. Period. I loved my old principal but he wouldn't have been that firm. It has worked wonders. She is a certified teacher and had to be reminded that at our school her role isn't that of teacher. I make the decisions. There has been a good turnaround, but she has a pretty good attitude about it. Yours sounds like that might not be the case. Is there someone else you can go to?

Wow, Linky, what a mess. I'm glad the aggress-ing student wasn't sent home with an out of control parent. Gotta love those office managers. They are the eyes, ears, and miracle workers of the office.

I've got a whopper of a problem going on in my room, both with students and staff. Student-wise, I have had an influx of students in the last week. My fourth new student will start tomorrow. Now there is a lot of posturing and attention-seeking behavior from the students. I'm working on putting the kibosh on that. Many of my kiddos will have new seats tomorrow. Then there is my staff trouble: My one associate is picking on a student and doesn't see it. In fact, she thinks that she is the only one correcting this student and we don't see the things he is doing. She had a total rant after work today that students need to sit at there desk, the kids are out of control, I'm asking for trouble by not having the students sitting in their desks. (I bring them out to the center of the room when they are working with me.) She went so far as to say that I'm not at my former school district and that I don't understand the issues in my classroom. Then there was the argument about grading for a student. I have a student who is experiencing significant trauma in his life (Mom dying from cancer) and is missing lots of school. I've given him a replacement assignment, which he turned in the other day, and told her what zeros were to be replaced. She argued with me about it, said he shouldn't get credit because he has been truant, that I was being too nice, and that I wasn't doing him any good. I've talked to her, my other associate (former classroom teacher of 20 years) has talked to her, my court liaison has talked to her with no significant/lasting change in her behavior. As an example, I suggested she sit in the middle of the room to work with students last Wednesday. She decided that was a good idea, tried it for a day, then decided it didn't work. Suggestions please???

Cripes, it is Thursday, yet? One of my little guys lost it in the classroom, and when he wouldn't redirect they had to get him out of the class before anyone got hurt. The student wound up in the office, screaming at the principal, the parent came in--as he was called as soon at the kid hit the other one. He starts screaming at the kid. I am trying to arrange for a conference room outside of the screaming zone as I have two parents who have taken time off from work to talk about their son (sweet boy--one of a set of triplets) who won't qualify under SD criteria to be considered for SPED. Thank god for Vicki, our elementary secretary to is finding us an open room, keeping the incoming parents away from the screaming zone and answering the phone at the same time. We under policy were to have sent the first child home due to the aggression to the other student, but my prinicipal doesn't feel it is safe to send the kid home with the parent that has lost all self control and is still screaming at the top of his lungs. We have an early dismissal on Thursday (1:30 p.m.) It can't come fast enough for me. Calgon take me away.

My thoughts are with those teachers, staff, parents, and students in Connecticut.

I had another quiet day today. My most vocal student (same one from the meeting yesterday) was gone again today. Mom is somewhat making excuses for him saying that he was up late last night then overslept, but insists he was up when she left for work. Anyone taking bets on whether the student purposefully missed school as "punishment" for not getting his way at the meeting yesterday?

I also had to have a very specific conversation with my court liaison about our numbers. I have another student joining the program on Wednesday. This will officially be our 12th student (only have 10 study carrels--two students are MIA). There are also an additional six students on the waiting list. I tried to be gentle by telling her that after my new student comes I will have all ten carrels filled up. At her blank look I got more specific that they were filled with live human bodies (as opposed to holding space for people awaiting placement or who are MIA). The light bulb went off. The whole conversation was very funny.

And I can't understand why they enable their children's behavior. Okay, that was really more of a commentary on my meeting, but it could also apply to your parent, Linky. Why won't they consider evaluation? Are they enabling his behavior?

My controversial meeting this morning was just as I expected. The student has not met the criteria to transition to comprehensive school, but the parent still wanted the transition to begin. We also discussed other options. Ultimately the student blew up and put an ultimatum on the table that he was returning to the comprehensive school or he was going to ride out his probation and stop attending. He ended up leaving the meeting, at which point the meeting ended because nothing could be worked out without the cooperation of the student. The student then refused to stay in school for the school day. Thus it ended up being a quiet day. I'll take it!!

I can never understand why parents don't want all the information they can get when it comes to helping their child.

What a wild day today. One of our kids is really puzzling us. Since October his level of aggression and destruction have been escalating. Today he decided that he didn't want to work on the white board (which has been a favorite activity). So he winged the whiteboard pen across the room before anyone could grab him and now we have a broken pen. That's going to cost $250 to replace. Perhaps this will be the push for the parents that we need to do further evaluation with him. They are resistant. I think we are to a point where we are running out of options.

Yep, got tons of documentation. I've also got some great people coming. There is my court liaison, of course. There is also an administrator and school social worker, plus a high up consultant. Still, I'll rest easier when this meeting is over.

I'm also having some difficulty with one of my associates again. Her idea of helping students is to tell them the page numbers and paragraph where the answer can be found from across the room. Then she gets frustrated when a student vents his frustration at her, by telling her she hasn't helped him, because he still doesn't get it even after her help. She blames the student for not getting it, and his frustration, because she says he wouldn't stop talking long enough to read the paragraph in question to be able to get the answer. I've led by example, and I've told her she needs to work more closely with the students rather than from across the room, so... What else can I do? I understand she wants to sit at her desk for purposes of documentation and so she can be on Facebook, but she needs to understand her actions are doing more harm than good.

Those meetings are no fun when the parents take no responsibility and don't hold the child to any standards. I'm sure you have all sorts of documentation. Good luck!

We are also out the 21st, but return the 2nd. Second semester doesn't start until January 16th, so there is lots to do before then. I'm feeling the crunch time, even if many of my students are not.

Meeting one of four for this week is done. My first transition meeting was today and went very well. The school that the student will be transitioning to took the initiative and essentially ran the meeting, so I didn't have to do much. I've also got one tomorrow morning, and my last one for this week Thursday morning. That is the one that I'm really worried about. The student in question for my Thursday morning meeting has had specific criteria set for him about whether or not he can transition. While he has been meeting the academic criteria, he has not been meeting the behavioral criteria. He is actually quite discrepant from other peers in the class. This doesn't bode well for his transitioning, but my court liaison and I are sure that his mother is going to push for him to return to comprehensive school. She blames me (and the program) for her child's issues and excuses his behavior. His behavior demonstrates a great sense of entitlement without claiming any responsibility for his own actions. It is definitely looking to being a contentious meeting. Wish me luck Thursday morning.

Our last day is the 21st also, but we come back the 3rd. I baked and wrapped on the weekend, then was sick yesterday. I stayed home sick yesterday and wanted to today but I knew with a district meeting where teachers from every building attend, there would be no subs. I was right, plus I'm down an EA with no sub for her. My kids are off the wall to boot but I'm going to make it to the end of the day!

Busy-chaos-time-energy -- lots of common threads here, and I can relate! I am really, really, REALLY looking forward to the 21st - a half day and our last day before the break. We don't come back until the 7th or 8th of January. I just want to cocoon at home, sleep, bake, sleep, clean, read, sleep, and relax! (Did I mention sleep?)

I'm not too far from Kim, so I have to agree that Mother Nature seems to be somewhat confused. Not sure if that bodes well for us for the rest of the winter or not. I do know the bottom is going to drop out of our temperatures in the next couple of days...

This was one of THOSE days. By about 9:30 this morning I had realized that I should have just stayed in bed. Lots of issues with my intakes today, plus I dropped my court liaison's DVD player. She was so wonderful in telling me to get over it. I'm still just mortified. emoticon

I really wished I could have stayed in bed this morning. My youngest woke up with an explosively dirty diaper and major diaper rash. To console him, I took him back to bed with me where I ended up having him fall back asleep on me until Hubby got home from work this morning. I really enjoyed that, since it has been so long since I've been lucky enough to have him sleep on me. He's growing up so fast!! emoticon

60s today and raining. Would expect to see cold nights, 30 degree days and recurring snow flurries.
Monitoring is done, seemed to be OK. Only issue found was our Special Ed bus drivers who were trying to shave time off students' days with early pick up. They observed the recordings of our outside cameras, and that is no longer an issue. Great week. Much better than last week.

I had a great IEP meeting yesterday with a student's parents - it's so nice when they can both come! It's also really nice when it's possible to make a positive experience out of identifying a student with a cognitive delay (IQ 60) who wasn't ID'd with that until 6th grade - the family has moved a lot, the student has (generally) good habits but a problem with behaviors (he gets frustrated and then angry), which are now a lot more understandable than they were when he was identified with a learning disability.

Our weather here is pretty odd too - 60s for a week, then 50s yesterday and today, but tomorrow it's supposed to be 40 with a rain/snow mix, and a high of 20 on Sunday with more snow. We really need the moisture - but do we have to have a 40 degree temperature drop to get it?

I wondered why somebody didn't do something; then I realized I was somebody! - unknown

Had a marathon IEP yesterday. Started at 4:00 and we didn't get done until 5:50. Today we don't work, so I am going to put up my Christmas tree this morning. Bella and I went out for our walk at 6:30 this morning as it is supposed to start raining this afternoon and then turn to snow. Monday it was 60 degrees. Mother nature is pretty confused this year.

had a wonderful IEP meeting today. love it when parents and I are thinking the same thing, but I get to surprise them with the ideas! going to have to change the schedule a bit and my speech and OT won't like me much but is best for the child.

I completely hear you. I had a problem solving meeting today, have two intakes tomorrow, another one next week, and three transition meetings. emoticon I've also got another four students coming in soon. Added into all this chaos is my own family's schedule (oldest two in basketball and youngest sick). I'm not sure which way is up. I've definitely got to get a handle on the chaos and things so that I feel more in control.

Things are going so fast that my head is spinning. I haven't been able to exercise much this week. Need to kick it into high gear the remainder of the week.

I seem to be gearing up to get an influx of students. Right now I have seven students. Of those, six are regular attenders, with one at half days. At the semester, four will be moving on. Before that comes though, I will be getting another three students at least, possibly as many as five. I have an intake for two of them on Friday. The intakes for the other students are waiting until they come out of placement. Lots of changes...

We are having state / federal monitoring this week. If you do great paperwork, but are a total loss as a teacher, you get high marks. If you miss even one paper, but are a great teacher, you get called on the carpet. Interesting. Come what may, we will survive. Last monitoring, the high school got low marks, but the elementary schools did well.
Having lots of fun with my students, working on "using school tools" to create seasonal decorations and work tasks. Making file folder games for the next 2-1/2 weeks. I have lots of stuff for January. Busy.

just had a meeting for my 10th student who will begin in Jan. Have such a mix in my class of autism - K through 3rd, verbal, non-verbal, academicallly able if below grade level, functional skills needed, refusal to work, emotional because of lack of teacher time. I am very frustrated right now but can't let the parents see that part. have to make it all work somehow.

Hope to be able to be more consistent with exercise and checking in. Last class for grad school was Dec 1. Just finishing up my research. Spring internship in my school left, doing some technology training for our staff and tracking the classroom impact. Should be fun, but pretty cumbersome.

Reinstated our YMCA membership this morning. Hoping I can get back on track!

My class has shrunk. I had 11 kids last year. Started this year with 7, but two have moved away! The 5 I have left are at each other's throats all the time, though, largely because of the loss of the other two. Plus, I have a brother and sister who are semi-verbal and they argue about everything (no one else understands them, I get most of it).

This year is flying by. We will finish first semester before Christmas! Almost halfway through already!

Thanks,

I hope we really can do some catching up over the holidays. I am sinking in paperwork. I took students camping last week and it went really well. I have another camping trip the 17 - 19th so with that the end of the calendar year will go really fast.
