My first thought was - FlyLady - www.flylady.net
She has a lot of great ideas on staying organized for students. It may not be a formal curriculum but I am betting that it would be very helpful.

Go to Penn State's website. Click on conferences. There you will find the Autism Conference. Some of the workshops were videotaped and the links to watch the videotape of the conference might still be up. There was a workshop on that exact topic. Since I work with ages 5-14 that are medically fragile and more cognitively delayed, I didn't attend that one.

Monday was the first of two inservice days before school starts Wednesday. As always, too much to do in a short period of time. We're still moving students around from case manager and teacher, and trying to get in class support that matches their IEP goals.

Today is when I get brace #4. I have run out of high hopes for this process. A friend who had hip replacement recently is pushing me to be honest about my current quality of life, and I am beginning to be less afraid of knee replacement. I realized I have been canceling all sorts of activities due to the pain, and I don't like that at all.

I'm looking for curriculum on teaching organizational skills to ADHD/Asperger teens, and their parents. Any suggestions? emoticon

Glad the acupuncturist helped. I would think AC would bring you some relief.

The school where I am working this year is air conditioned. It will be the first time in 20 years that I have taught in a building with AC...Not sure what my sinuses will think of the AC...I'll find out next week. Went to the acupuncturist today to help get my head unclogged. I am much better now.

Our building used to be half air conditioned and half not. Now those rooms have window units. I'm in a room where the air is on full blast all day so I wear a sweater more of the time. We're never happy are we? emoticon

I do have air conditioning at my school. It doesn't help with my allergies, but we're not sure what I'm allergic to. I have to say though, that it would be really hard to return to a building without air conditioning. I've never been a fan of the heat and humidity that accumulates in the building during summer.

That is so sad. For some of my students, I really think a group home is a better placement than their real home. So many parents are clueless on how to discipline the special needs' children we deal with...living in a tent...no wonder he is out of control.
Hope you get a brace that really fits! I would have gone for a second opinion after the first one didn't fit. You are way more patient than me.

One full week back to school finished.
Sad part is one of my students was placed in a behavioral facility last Sunday night and was realeased yesteday. He is only a second grader. His mother told our school social worker that he was hitting her and kicking her and cussing and she could not control him. Too sad. This is the student that I found out is living in a tent.

I have not been walking.....not eating like I should..... One positive...I have been drinking my water.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

I hope they get the brace problem figured out. You don't need the added stress at the beginning of the year.
The teacher who got the big room had the nerve to say to the principal as I walked by "have you been in to see my big, new room, it's wonderful". I just looked at him and he looked at me like "Really"? emoticon Grrr! (Saying to self, "let it go, let it go, let it go".

I've been setting up my new classroom and getting to know my main paraprofessional. Since this level is all new to me, I'm a lot behind on planning--students return on Wednesday! I have been caught up in the drama of my knee problems--I have had three knee braces made and none of them fit right. The last one was almost right, except for the part that actually touches the knee to give it support. The orthotics guy said it must be a "soft tissue" problem: he didn't squish my knee fat when measuring. I started to cry, I was so frustrated. It's been six weeks for this process and nothing seems to be working right. I'm trying them one more time and then, I'll get a different referral from my surgeon.

Things will get better, though--they always do. emoticon

I don't have windows in my room either. I kind of like it that way. I can pretend it is a pretty day every day. Cross country season starts next Friday. I am looking forward to watching my children run. Today my son is having friends over while my daughter is at band camp. Summer is going quickly by..One more week...

Windows? What are windows? I've been in the same 1/2 size classroom for 7+ years with no windows. I get funny looks from administration when I mention my thoughts on having the art students paint a picture of a window in my classroom. Usually I mention the window when I want to throw my technology out of it, but it isn't always that way.

It's the third day of school, and my egomaniac student is already starting in. She wasted all her study time yesterday, even after being told that my class would not be a dedicated study hall this year. She also didn't do any homework last night. Given the fact that she is an 18-year-old senior with hopes for college, I've decided that she is going to learn to live with the consequences of her choices this year.

Exactly, not the best situation for kids who have attention problems. The other teacher brought another crying student in today. It's not her fault, that's the nature of her job. Oh well.....
I worked in a room for 9 yrs. with no windows. People probably thought I was weird for getting excited over having windows! Now I have windows and they're in the other teacher's half of the room!!

Space really is nice! I have a BIG (normal size) classroom this year after being in half of a resource room and then a full resource room but this year I have 1/3 more classroom and it makes a difference in the calmness of the children from what I can see. They have enough space without bothering each other. I wish you all enough space at some point. I don't think the space is appreciated enough by those who have never had to teach in a little tiny area.

I didn't realize how much space matters, because I never had it. Now I work at a different school where I have a "normal-sized" classroom! You might want to sit down for this part---It has DOORS! I LOVE IT! Now that I have space and doors, I can be as dynamic as I want in my teaching and I'm not bothering anyone. My kids are benefiting, because I am enjoying student engagement that I have never had before! Teachers and students need space AND DOORS! Who ever decided to build schools without doors anyways emoticon

I'm also too busy to eat with the start of the school year. It was 3pm by the time I realized I'd missed lunch and had time to do anything about it. Needless to day, my choices weren't that great. Oh, well, it will slow down eventually. Another sped teacher and I were already caught by the assistant principal this morning having a small vent session about a variety of things. Probably not the best for the third day of school, but we all ended the session smiling. Mission accomplished.

i am looking forward to getting back into the routine of school. I don't do well without structure. I have been good about dropping my children at cross country practice, getting to the club to get my workout in daily, and then picking them back up...But the afternoon with nothing to do has not been helpful. I don't start until after Labor Day...so two more weeks.

I'm impressed you're training for a marathon at all! Good for you. One of my paras is running a marathon in Oct. for her 50th bday. She did the same for her 45th. Not the kind of gift I'll ever give myself!
My last dress fitting is tonight and I'm happy to report I've lost 5 lbs. since my last fitting. I'm hoping it feels a little looser and more comfy. Being back in the school routine keeps me so busy there's no time to eat!

I had a good day yesterday with my sister-in-law. We took the kids to our local water park/amusement park. It was nice to get away and stop thinking so much about the job hunt.
Today, on the other hand, was a down day for me. As the new school year looms closer, my desire to get a job and my own classroom seems impossible right now. I am trying to hold to my faith and know that God has a plan for me--not any easier to deal with.

As for the boredom of my marathon training, I am just tired of having to follow a set schedule in order to do well during the actual event. It takes the fun out of exercising when I know I have to run "X" amount of miles each week. This feeling of boredom will pass. I was able to do my 16 miles on a trail near me which was a nice change of pace. I am just ready for something different around here--kids going back to school, subbing to start, etc.

I hope you all have a great week!

Melissa:)

I still need to pick up my pants at the tailors. I am short and had to have them hemmed. I keep procrastinating picking them up...maybe because I am not ready to admit that school starting is happening really soon..
Today I take my son to get his eye exam. I think glasses are in his future. Poor kid, tomorrow he goes to the orthodontist to start the brace process. So he'll be starting 7th grade with glasses and braces :(

Let me know how the P90X works for you. When school starts, I usually try something different. What is it? Got back from a weekend with my parents. It is sad to see my father basically stuck home because my mother cannot really get around. They are both 75. Dad golfs 2-3 days a week. Luckily I have two sisters and a brother that live nearby. They drop by and visit with my mom while Dad golfs...Managed to survive a weekend with chocolate as a food group and only gain .5 pounds.

Melissa, I agree with Trish that it sounds like your marathon training is a good way to deal with your unwanted excess time, and I hope it also helps alleviate stress. As for being tired of the schedule, what about it is boring you? Is the schedule set by you, or do you have a training group? Is there a way to shake it up or change it?

I love what SoccerChic said about being excited to see how the year progresses. I hope that enthusiasm is contagious and we can all experience that joy!

Tech problems... my boss wants me to "consider" accepting a company Blackberry, and I am resisting! I don't WANT to be available 100% of the time by email! If it's really that important, well then just CALL ME!

Speaking of the job... this fall has brought me a whole new set of interesting challenges. Instead of dealing with my own changing student roster, I am responsible for assigning the rosters to my teachers, and delicately implementing the many changes to the roster after having assigned it! I have learned that no matter how much I plan and organize and map it all out, some things are beyond my control and I just have to roll with it.

Other than that, I also have to make sure I spend 50% of my time ďbillable,Ē or working with students! Hereís the problem with that. If I increase my billable hours that means I take students away from my teachers, who are paid hourly and do not want to lose students off their load. Iím learning how to balance it all out. Itís challenging, but I think Iíll get the hang of it.

This week Iím going to start being more focused on my fitness and eating goals. I have made far too many excuses for far too long. Iím starting the P90X workout system that a friend gave me (thanks Katy, if youíre here!) and making sure to plan my meals in advance. I can do it!!!

It sounds like the tech problems are wide spread. We didn't have a working printer in our building on Friday. No one could print from their computer. That makes things a little challenging. I feel sorry for the people who are trying to fix all these problems. I wish you patience (and may the teachers stay patient also.) I will see my students on Monday. I have met all but 2 at the Open House.

I have one more inservice day on Monday before the kids arrive. Yesterday was mostly working in my classroom, which was great. As a building technology guru, I was also kept busy chasing after computer problems. Because of massive updating, I can already tell there will be tons of issues.

My roster isn't completely finalized yet. I have a meeting Monday to determine the status of one more student. We're not sure if he's coming back or not, as he is very transient and is of age to drop. We know Mom wants him in school and will try to snow everybody at the meeting into thinking the kid has changed. The sad thing is that he is the best hope of his family to break the chain of abject poverty and welfare. Whatever happens, I hope he follows through with it to success.

Goood luck and happy school year to those back or going back soon.

crazy week! two move-ins = lots of paperwork. I love my kids though and they continue to make me laugh and remind me why I wanted to be a teacher. Already I have seen some very promising things with my students so I am excited to see how the year progresses...

Mine were in gen. ed. the first 2 days. I spent my time making the rounds, developing schedules for my students with autism, and getting materials ready for my new student.
Just got back from a very humid walk, but it's done!

Good luck all you starting school. I am leaving tomorrow morning to visit my family this weekend. We will be returning Monday. So enjoy the weekend everyone! Labor Day and long weekend is coming...When I taught in states that started before Labor Day, it was nice to get a few days or a few weeks in and then a long weekend. When I start, I won't have a day off until Columbus Day the middle of October...

I started inservice days yesterday and will get kids on Tuesday. Right now my routine is all messed up. I didn't get any exercise in yesterday and I won't get any today because of new student orientation. I also seem to have developed some type of foot injury. I'm determined to be back at the gym on Friday, though. Despite the lack of exercise, I'm still trying to eat well.

MJ,
Limbo is not a fun place to be right now. I have been there. T raining for a marathon sounds like such a good use of your time. I wish I had done that when I was in between teaching jobs instead of the stressing and eating I did. My summer was consumed by baseball as well. This weekend we are traveling to my parents house. Next week is band camp for my daughter and then one more week and school begins...Where did summer go?

Hi Everyone! I got called on Monday from someone from an Elementary School about a Substitute Teaching TA Special Education job on Friday. So, if all goes as planned, I will teach on Friday. School just starts this week, so I am happy to get a Sub Teaching job this early in the season. Take care everyone! :) Bren emoticon emoticon

Hi all,
I cannot believe that summer is almost over. I haven't had a chance to truly enjoy it the way I thought I would get to. Baseball season is FINALLY over, so now we will start soccer and football. Good times never end.

For now, I just keep applying to the jobs that post and keep my name on the sub lists. I am not looking forward to subbing again this year, it is so hard not knowing the students and the daily routine. I just want my own class/students.

Anyway, I am still training for my marathon and am tired of the schedule. I know in the end it will all be worth it when I cross the finish line. I have 1 1/2 months left until I go to Portland, OR for the BIG 26.2 run. I will probably end up walking and running since I am still trying not to get reinjured from my tendonitis in my leg. Sunday night I was doing my 14 mile run and had some problems with my left knee. I ended up walking nearly the whole last 3 miles. Oh well, I guess we will see what happens when I try to run my 6 miles tonight. I hope I won't have pain, but if I do I will just take it easy. I may have to give my knee more time--that is what happens when you run too far, too soon although I am following my training schedule. I guess I have to listen to my body before I follow the training schedule and get myself injured for the big day.

I will keep you all posted on any new job updates. Take care everyone as I know you are all looking forward to the start of another school year--I am jealous and wish I were in your shoes.

Melissa:)

Great news on the acupuncturist Trish! It's sad that they give us one day to get ready. They know it isn't possible in that time and just expect us to come in for free on our own time. *sigh*

Kitty, that is always a tough situation, but you did the right thing. We donít do our adult students any favors by giving in to the parents. Itís great when the parent wants to be involved and the student accepts it, but too often they want to be in CHARGE.

PSC, even though you are catching up and havenít been on the boards much, it has been nice to hear from you in messages! You are very thoughtful.

Kim, great news that you like the new director!!!

Iím home early because my afternoon student didnít show up. Since I worked ten hours yesterday, I do NOT feel bad about it. Nap time!!! Then I have my running group tonight, except I can only walk right now (doctorís orders) Ė but itís better than nothing.

Went to see the acupuncturist today. It is amazing what those little needles can do to my out of control sinuses! This is the first August that I haven't had to be on prednisone, antibiotics and my nebulizer. I am really looking forward to the Fall. I am ready for school to start. Unfortunately, my school will start like yours Kaheit. Lots of boring meetings and people talking and not a lot of time to get things ready for the students to come....Why do they do this to us?

I don't feel nearly as tired today as yesterday although I feel very behind! We had meetings all day. The morning was about literacy, which was great info, except many of us had taken the exact class from the same person in June (zzzzz). The afternoon was meeting with our new special ed. director. I really liked her!

Roxell, sorry about your tough day today. It seems to be going around. I don't go back to school until Wednesday, but I already have a parent asking questions. I also had to remind the parent that the child is 18, so unless parents have guardianship, the student is in charge of her own education and decisions. I'm waiting to have my ears blistered by e-mail tomorrow, as I know the parents will not like that.

You know how everyone wants to catch up when you start back of course. Don't get me wrong, I'm a talker, but I'm exhausted from all the talking today. I'm going to force myself to get a walk in. The weather is finally cooler so I hate to miss out!

Got the visit in and it was very nice. I did feel torn because I go back to school tomorrow. We're already having a celebration and I had to bake treats. As soon as I got home a friend stopped by because she's doing some wedding stuff for me. Finally working on treats at 9 p.m. Almost done now and off to bed. 6 hrs. of driving for a 3 hr. visit and I'm worn out! But, yes, it was worth going!

Hope you aren't feeling guilty about traveling to see family. I think teachers feel the need to work way too many hours. Not sure why that is.
My daughter is off to cross country camp. Took my son to the gym. Did the elliptical for 5.12 miles..He ran for 30 minutes..Not sure what this afternoon will bring...With the daughter gone, probably much needed peace and quiet.

Kim, my fingers are crossed for you to have a different partner.

Rox, no I'm not back in school yet. I don't actually head back to inservice until Wednesday. Things in my room are just starting early. Unfortunatley, there is only one of me to go around, many students who need me, and even the one of me will be in short supply. I'm also looking at the possibility of having associate/student troubles with one of my associates who gets too involved with a particular student.

I'm looking forward to the weekend. Tomorrow is the 15th class reunion. I have a baby sitter lined up and am planning to go socialize. It will be very different without children or only teachers.
