I just bought a Polar ft4 this week and I love it. It counts calories, tells me what my heart rate zone should be, what my exact heart rate is, and how long I was in the zone for during the workout. Also time duration. I got mine at a local sporting goods store and retail was $89. It has the chest strap but it is very comfortable to use.
I am new to my weight loss journey, only been at it about 1 month

The disadvantage about the polar is you can't go to the store and buy a replacement battery. I've been looking at them too, but I want one a little more complex because I am starting to run, etc.

Look at the Polar FT4 or FT7 on Amazon. They look like either might work for you and they aren't too pricey.

I want the fancy Garmin, but I can't afford it right now. I was trying to get something to hold me over until I can save up enough money for the one I REALLY want! ;)

It really depends on the person honestly. When I first started running I was averaging 95 calories per mile. Now I average 75 calories per mile. I use a Garmin 405 CX though and I know you are looking for something simpler....sorry I can't advise you there.

First of all, the average calorie burn is 100 to 120 calories per mile, so your 700+ may not be too far off.

HRMs with straps tend to be more accurate. Polar are the most accurate out there (and their straps are pretty comfortable) because they measure each beat while others do averaging. Most any Polar or other HRM will give you calorie burn.

I have a Polar F6, but it's an older model and they don't make it anymore. Checkout their website. You can find out what type of monitor you need. Then go to Amazon (usually the cheaper place) to checkout the prices.

Anyone out there have a recommendation for a moderately priced HR monitor with a fairly accurate calorie tracking function? I don't need GPS at this point and I prefer strapless since I'm not a marathoner or a hard-core runner - YET! :) I just want some way of gauging how many calories I'm burning when I'm not on the treadmill at the gym. I just bought a Mio Drive, but I don't think the calorie function is accurate. The first time I used it, it said I burned 738 calories in my one hour session on the treadmill. I wish that were true, but common sense tells me differently. Suggestions?
