Well I'll tell you what, it's MUCH cheaper to go out and not drink. Much cheaper.

I am feeling very, very good about this AF day I'm about to put to bed. I'm going to go get a big glass of water, curl up with my book and sleep soundly.

To get through my evening tonight -- the crucial part where I talked myself out of walking by the wine store on the way home -- I was saying to myself "I'm alcohol free and easy."

It really helped!

Wow! I had not visited this thread in awhile - how fun to read all of it again, plus the posts I had not seen before! I am so interested in having an alcohol free week - just one week, this week - why? To remind myself and get it into my head, that when I don't drink in the evenings I:

* can do other things instead, like read a book or get some exercise
* sleep better, sounder, and all the way through the night
* have more energy the next day and a clearer head
* don't feel guilty and anxious
* have better success with weight loss

It was so cool to read this thread this morning - I feel supported by reading it, in that I am reminded that I am not a bad person, and that I have the same struggle as some other good people, and that I can CHOOSE to have an AF day ANY day that I want to! I CHOOSE!

I remember feeling that way at my company christmas party this year. I did have a drink, but it was so much less than I usually have. You are doing great! I feel wonderful right now, not that I have lost any weight, but I feel more in control of me and my life than I have in years. My daughter never stops telling me how proud she is of me, and she is actually drinking less now too, because she doesn't want to wind up where I was.

Thanks everyone! I felt even greater last night - at a staff party with free booze and I said know about 5 times and stuck to my water and club soda. Unheard of for me in the past to give up FREE booze emoticon

But seriously - the first time I give in to a drink this year, it will be my first drink of the 'year' and that in of itself is incredible ... so I'm curious to see how long I can stay AF (beyond my original pledge to at least beat my 30 day streak).

My favorite things about being sober:
- I am in control of my emotions
- I can focus and be productive
- I don't go after crappy junk foods or binge on random things nearby
- I can appreciate everything around me

I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.

Last Thursday night/Friday morning, my roommate came into my room saying that she was having chest pains and sweating. We took her to the ER, got there at 4am. By 7am they had determined that there was something wrong (nitro made the chest pain go away) and decided to admit her to the Cardiac Care unit. After a couple of hours and a few EKGs there, they moved her to ICU, so they could drip nitro...however, the cardiac surgeon decided that an angiogram was necessary, and at that hospital they couldn't do any follow up angioplasty if necessary, so they moved her to another hospital that has a whole wing of the hospital dedicated to cardio care. The angiogram came back that her heart has not been damaged at all, but she does have an arrythmia. They sent her home Saturday morning and she is going in to our regular doctor today to begin the process of trying to figure out what is causing the pain and arrythmia and how best to treat it. Thank all the powers that be that I was sober and not suffering from a hangover while all of this was going on, so I was able to clearly convey to the doctors what her wishes were, and to her what was going on.

Last I did not drink, so I was able to rescue my friend when her and her husband hit a deer. I was so glad to be in the position to help when they were 20 miles from their house and needed a tow truck and a ride home.
Clear headed this morning, I greeted the day by bringing my son to diving practice at 7 and taking the dog on a beautiful early morning hike in at a l local nature preserve! Glorious day.
11:00am and ready for the rest of the day, cleaning so I can decorate for Christmas!

Hello everyone! Well for me the benefits are being much more productive, less anxious and feeling better about myself. I go days without drinking and feel good about myself. Then one night can ruin it. ( well the night is good, but the next day is not) the next day I am mean to myself, guilty and just not a good person to be around. I want to break the cycle for good.

It is a GOOD thing Kathleen because with a clear mind you can do things to avoid falling too deep into the slump/depression and you can take action to pull yourself up. Alcohol is a depressant so definitely good you're AF.

I'm AF tonight (my 20th day in a row) and it's kind of special... Both my girls are gone so I could technically go out and have a drink, but I've opted to do some stuff at the house including some pampering (bath, reading a good book, cooking)... I have to say - honestly when I look at all there is to do, there's no time to drink. I have so many things I want to get done ... no time to sit my butt down and watch tv/drink. Instead, I'm listening to music and getting things done! Great feeling... and a clean house gives me a clean, peaceful feeling. Still de-cluttering (it's an ongoing thing we must do, especially with kids).

Tomorrow will be our family day - going out to watch the movie and dinner... and get ready for the new week ahead!

While this isn't exactly a GOOD feeling, it's one that is important to me. I can feel myself starting the slide into a depressive episode...not sure why though, but since I am AF (going on day 9 in a row), I am clear-headed enough to try and figure it out.

I also had a great night last night. We had many more trick-or-treaters than we had last year and it was my job to pass out candy. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Because I was AF tonight - I was able to go and bring my daughter some 'sleepover' stuff to her friends (I could drive)... making her Halloween night a full success!

And I was also able to then be present for my oldest daughter as we went out for a walk together ...

I love this topic and everyone's posts. I especially like Cubbymamma's observation: "Proving to myself that I can do it - I've got the will power, and my 'destiny' is not predetermined. I can do this!"

I really, really, really have been letting myself go lately, and I need compelling, convincing reasons to be AF. I appreciate everyone's comments. For me, in particular, it's not feeling guilty, like I've let myself down. Of course, it's also knowing I haven't blown many, many calories for no good reason. Lately, it's also realizing how much money I'm wasting! Also, when I think about the phrase, "You are what you eat/drink," I don't like the idea of my body being a big, sloshy glass of wine!!!

I'm going to revisit this topic frequently. Thanks, everybody.

I was so very lucky that I was AF last night...the weather was bad and the wind heavy, three panels of fence were blown down. I wound up having to get up at 6am in the dark and prop the panels back up....by myself. Thank goodness I wasn't fighting off a hangover on top of it all.

I'm on day 2 of being AF after allowing myself to spin back into a non-AF spell... and boy - what a difference I feel in my whole state of 'being'.

From anxiety, guilt, worry, nervousness, illness even... to feeling back 'on top of things' and more in control.

It seems I was using the alcohol to try to avoid things and now that I'm facing up to them, so many great things are coming through. I do believe that I'm going to stretch this AF streak out some more to keep feeling better with every single day.

Yes. I spent most of the afternoon worrying about it, because he appeared to be very sick. However, this morning he is running around like his normal self. Still has a cough, but the vet said that would stay with him for a few weeks...he has to take meds for 2 weeks and go back to her.

Last night, because I wasn't drinking, I was able to take the old beagle to the vet and make informed decisions about his care. Turned out he has bronchitis which is very treatable. In the past I would have had a drink or two before I went, in order to deaden the pain of the fact that it could be his "last long walk". Since I was completely sober, I understood well the vet's instructions, and our Jimmy is going to be fine.

YAY! Everyone is having such a great time without drinking. And getting so much done. I got all my laundry done, yardwork done, and the house cleaned up well enough that I was able to cook out on the hibachi last night, it was so nice. And this morning I came to work with a clear head...good thing, because today is the day I have to file my first expense report after we changed all the rules in the company, and there are all kinds of split payments and new coding and blahblahblah...and I turned it in with no mistakes.

Great topic, and I love reading about everyone's personal victories!!

What's been good for me..

Big help in my attempts to break out of binge and binge/purge cycles - alcohol lowers my inhibitions so avoiding and reducing has been a real eye opener.
Feeling less anxiety and guilt (whether I have actually done anything or have anything to be anxious about, that's just my personality).
Sleeping more through the night!
More calories left for REAL FOOD.
Proving to myself that I can do it - I've got the will power, and my 'destiny' is not predetermined. I can do this!

If you are a dreamer, come in,
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

I am still stuck on the scale, not sure how that is happening...but last night I was able to make the specialized meal for my roommate who is having a flair-up of her IBS. Usually I just let her fend for herself, but it felt good to be useful.

Loving these posts! And you know you can come back and continue listing as you discover the great feelings you have when you are AF.

For me this week - I know that being AF is contributing largely to the movement on my scale. I was 'stuck' again in the mid-160s and in 2 days I have lost 3lbs!!

I don't try to avoid phone calls because I'm worried that people can tell I've been drinking.

I honestly look better. My skin & eyes are clearer.

I don't crave greasy foods the next day.

I get so much more done!

Tonight was 3 in a row for me & it was hard but so worth it!!

I went AF for the entire month of July and have been MOD or AF since then.
I exercise more in the evening.
The scale started going down again (I've hit my goal and set another one).
I tried on a pair of jeans that I've had and didn't fit for the last 3 years and they fit now.

I really like this topic!

So, here's my list:
-No guilt! No worries about saying something while I was drinking that I might regret
-I sleep so much better
-My anxiety levels are much improved without alcohol
-I can eat more, because I'm not sucking down all the booze calories, but ironically, I don't want to
-I look much more refreshed, my eyes are less puffy and I'm much less bloated-yay!!

Makes me wonder why I want to drink in the first place...

I my thoughts are clear and I have energy to deal with the 90 students waiting for me and my co-workers every morning.
I have lost 7 pounds since Sept. 6. mostly because I have stopped drinking 400-500 extra calories a day.
I can dress faster in the morning because more of my clothes FIT!
I am saving money. I used to spend about $50 a week on wine for me and beer for my husband. That's $200 a month!

So much more!

Great points Geraldine!! I also have often felt self conscious about the booze smell on me the 'day after' and gag when I smell someone on the bus that smells like that ... YUCK!

And cheers to losing the belly too - I also feel much less bloated and it feels wonderful!

Let's keep this going team ... maybe it will encourage me to continue my current 4 day streak (tomorrow is the tough day 'mentally' any how - Friday and the weekend)... I need to think of how much better I'll feel if I don't drink so let's keep adding to the list!

This is a good discussion emoticon and where to start...

when I am AF I have loads more energy,
I don't have to worry that I may be saying the wrong things,
I sleep much better,
I don't eat as much junk food,
I don't have to worry the next day if people can smell the booze on me,
I feel more confident,
and I am losing my belly emoticon

Stick to your plan, but make it an achievable plan, check in daily and believe

ANNE-MARGARET said she needs to hear how good we feel when we have an AF streak and suggested I start a post ... not sure if this is the right place for it but heck here goes...

We'll use this thread to list what we feel when we accomplish AF streaks. List details of what it is that makes you feel so much better for being AF for more than a day... How does it affect your state of mind, your energy, details folks - all of them. This thread will be a resource for those who struggle to get more than one day at a time in...

I'll start with my own current 4 day streak and how I feel:

- I am clear headed and at peace (no guilt for over-indulging or feeding my body alcohol, but feeding it good nourishing drinks/food instead)

- I have loads more energy and seriously more alert and able to perform tasks efficiently

- I crave 'healthy' things

- I have more time - to do things that are good for me. Instead of sitting on my butt watching TV and having a drink - I'm constantly moving and doing things. Reading, pampering myself, exercising, walking, de-cluttering... it's so liberating!!

- I am able to respond to crises without hesitation... Things come up and if I've had drinks, there are things I can't do (like if my kids want to go somewhere last minute - I can't go because I've had drinks but if I'm AF it's no problem). I feel I am more THERE for there as their mom when I'm AF and I don't feel the guilt when I discipline them. When I'm having drinks I second guess my discipline and wonder if I'm in the right state of mind to be doing so - worrying that I am not being fair. When I'm AF I know I'm on track and there's not guilt or anxiety about this.

- I don't over eat. When I drink, I snack - they go hand in hand. When I'm AF I generally lose weight. When I drink I gain... simple math formula there ... If I want to lose and get to goal I have to be AF more than I drink (so allow yourself maybe a better ration of more AF days than drinking days - aim for 1 or 2 days max per week and don't overdo it when you do have some). Don't do the all or nothing mental struggle - you can have 1 or 2 and STOP. Hey I need to read this next time I allow myself a 'cheat' day lol

- I have more time for sparking and blogging - which keeps me grounded and accountable. When I drink I avoid things... when I'm AF I live life fully... when I drink I tend to want to retreat and hide from the world (which is a downfall of my 'alone' drinking). So now I try to only drink in social situations which means I do limit it ... New rule - don't drink alone... mmm I gotta do this too!!

How about the rest of you... what are some of the things you feel when you are on an AF Streak! Please share, big or little, the victories of being AF!!
