Happy August, all! I'm looking forward to a weekend with my husband with no scheduled commitments other than communion clean-up after church on Sunday. I'm hoping that we'll go to the Uptown Art Fair in Minneapolis. There will be about 700 artists in a several block area of Uptown. We mostly browse and talk with artists. The people watching is fantastic too.

Have a great weekend!!

I'm savoring my first day of no parent duty. Enjoyed walking Zoe and a leisurely breakfast on the patio. Cris, thanks for your support and comments. A care-giver support group sounds good. This experience brings up all kinds of confusing emotions. It helps me to vent here and it has helped to talk with a cousin who cared for her mother (my aunt) and a good friend who has been caring for her mother in her (the friend's home) for 8!!! years.

A big positive for me--I got in 6.4 miles yesterday and my feet didn't hurt. Earlier in the year, as I was trying to build back up to 10,000 steps, my feet bothered me a lot. I got the miles in through activities helping Mom, mowing our yard, and walking the neighborhood delivering the National Night Out invitations.

Carol, I'm eager to hear how boot camp and the start of school goes for you. Sending positive vibes your way!

Do you have a mileage walking app you particularly like? One that is easy to use? I tend to rely on SP and my pedometer at this point. Ended up with 4.6 miles yesterday. When I get out there I can rack up the miles. But need to get consistency back into the equation. My best friend is my walking partner but she is now heading into cancer surgery after losing her husband in June. Been a challenging year so far.

Hey Cris,
Hope you were able to get out there today:)

Things here are going well:) Boot camp is coming up! School year is coming up:) We shall see what changes/mind losing occurs:)

I don't chat with Stormdor. Sorry, I don't know more:)

As for my mom, she has every excuse in the book. She used to walk and do zumba and some weights, and now nothing that I know of. My dad takes their dog to the park all the time, but she stays home when they go. Who knows:)
More motivation for me, that is for sure!

There's lots of wonderful apps out there for tracking walks and mileage:) Fun and addicting!

Carol, reread your post. Will your mom walk? That seems to be the preferred choice for a number of my friends including me. Beats the couch. For a while I was hooked on tracking routes and mapping them daily.

Kate, I did best when I forced myself to go daily to Curves. So walking your dog is great. Do it! Secondly, having dad live with me forced me to deal with some very intense feelings that go wayyyy back. In any relationship there will be resentment followed by feeling guilty, then followed by anger or resolution. I still have not reached the resolved stage, and may never quite get there. But I am moving in that direction. A portion of the resentment came from not having anyone to share the load and my not wanting to have to do this from quite a distance and being retired myself. Literally had to give up everything I enjoyed doing. But I learned that most caregivers I chatted with have exactly the same range of emotions Iam experiencing. Absolutely normal. What a relief.

It is always good to hear from both of you. Carol, reading about your activity level keeps physical activity always in front of me. I can and need to do more. Keep reminding me.

And, Kate, this elder care issue is so wide spread more than I ever realized. I am strongly thinking of joining a caregiver's group. I need to talk with others to gain more perspective and to accept that I am not responsible for making an aging parent do what doctors say, etc. and so, the next chapter begins. Grins.........have a good one, all.

Hey, Carol, ever hear from Stormdore? Not sure about user name.

Hello hello ladies! Wow! Sounds like you all have been very busy with friends and family's health issues:( I am so sad to read about everything. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way.

I have been attending quite a few trainings recently for my new "gym career". I am learning lots and anxious to learn more! The best take-a-away from a recent class was "The worst thing you can do over 60 is not move." I am really trying hard to get my mom to move more, but it is a struggle. I'm also getting lots of practical application also! I did a TRX training session yesterday which was fabulous! We had a great trainer!
Boot camp is coming up! I have a group of 17 who will be sweating it out the week before school starts! CANNOT WAIT!!! Honestly for the first time in awhile I am not sad about going to back to school. I am looking at it as something to do to fill my day time hours in between working at the Y and the gym. Sad but true.

The storms were more in Virginia. We just got some rain. I did see where a tornado touched down at a campsite. CRAZY! I am hearing we are anticipating our second tropical storm this coming week. Temps are supposed to dip into the 50's overnight! WHAT!! I'll have to get out my sweaters!
Hope everyone has a great, restful Sunday!

Cris, glad the blood drive went well.

My Mom is progressing well as far as I can tell. We have a follow-up appt next Thursday. However, I've just admitted to myself that I'm really stressed by: staying with her full time (first three days) and running back and forth (just since Thursday. It;s so weird! I cleared my calendar for the week, my husband is completely understanding, I'm taking time to walk Zoe before I go over to Mom's, she and I have had some good frank talks and some good laughs----so why am I not having an easier time?? My IBS has kicked up big time. Thanks for reading/listening. This too shall pass. I know it's hard on her too. She's used to being independent and living alone.

Carol, I hope that the storms on the Eastern Shore didn't affect you. Chilling photos on the national news as I watched with my Mom.

Good news for me! Mom was able to get in and out of her bed by herself last night and this morning. That means I can sleep at home tonight! I'll still visit three times a day to help with meals and glaucoma eye drops.

Cris and Carol, have a great weekend.

Cris, I hope you're having better weather today. It's beautiful here--a huge drop in humidity and temp. Carol, I assume that you're really, really busy. Hope all is well with you.

My Mom is progressing. Tonight may be my last night staying here, but I will need to come back at lunch and in the evening at least until next week when the bandages come off.

I've been taking time to go home and walk the dog, but not to go to the gym. It will be good to get back to that too.

Take care,
Kate

Cris, the campfire gathering sounds magical. What a great idea!

I'm into my second day of staying with my mother at her Senior Apartment. She had successful (we hope) carpal tunnel surgery yesterday. It would really be no big deal except that she can't bear any weight on her right hand and she has gotten to the place of not being able to get out of a chair without using her hands/arms. We're figuring it out as we go. Luckily she has a good attitude about it all. It's a great reminder to keep up my exercise. To keep my sanity, I'm going over to walk our dog early in the morning when Mom is still sleeping and promises not to get up until I get back. We're also having a lot of good talks that wouldn't happen except here, so I'm glad to be doing it.

My brother helped me solve the problem of connecting my laptop to Mom's wireless, so I'm planning to be a little better at being in touch.

Take care,
Kate

Went with mr friend to discuss treatment options for cancer of the eyelid. Prognosis excellent if basal cell, which they think it is. Then I took her to my hometown to explore a riverfront hotel, condo complex. Pampered ourselves with a fantastic salad meal and night in the hotel. Absolutely gorgeous riverfront walk right where I canoed as a teenager. Really a nice day.

Really like this idea. So often we do not know our neighbors, not like when I was growing up. So we are not as in tune with who our neighbors are.

The funeral went well. Because we had been camping with trailer in tow we simply camped in the local state park and invited family to join us around a friendly campfire. What a great choice. Some folks who usually do not talk much to each other did so around the campfire. Oh, the stories that were told! Rather left an empty place in my heart when we left. So, Steve and I decided that we will haul the trailer back to Bay City in August and have a repeat of what we got started.

Cris, you're becoming an expert in area none of us would like to be an expert in. I agree let 2015 be a better year for you.

Night to Unite is the new name in this area anyway for National Night Out. It's been going on for years across the country as far as I know. neighborhood block crime watches have a captain and they have a picnic on the first Tuesday in August. The idea is everyone lock the doors turns on their porch lights and gathers to let criminals know that we're strong and united. Happily our neighborhood there really is no crime. Thank goodness! But it's nice to get a nice time to get to know the neighbors tends to carry over to the rest of the year in terms of helping each other out or at least greeting each other when we see each other.

Carol, congrats on getting insurance so you can really work independently.

The weather here is great too. I've just been filling out the application for our annual neighborhood Night to Unite picnic. It's not until that first Tuesday in August, but need to get it in early in order to get on the list for a visit from a firetruck or police car.

Today we are camping near the tip of the lower peninsula. Already can feel the stress lessening. Brought the kayaks and bikes to get some fitness hours in.

On sad notes, my friend who just lost her husband to cancer, learned that she also has cancer. And my mother-in-law just entered hospice. Very sad times in this house. What a year!

Wow Cris!!! I cannot imagine this. Thank goodness you are as fit and capable as you are to get out there and get them:) WOHOO!

Kate, so sorry to read about your experience with the Life Coach. I am wondering if they have enough staff to cover all the positions for services they advertise.

Things here are going really well! Kayaking today. Got hired at another gym. Planning a boot camp for teachers before we go back to school. I was able to buy insurance on my own so now I can train out of my home or go to clients' homes:)
Hope everyone has a great day!

Wow, Cris, you're a hero! I'm glad to be back and catching up with you and with you, Carol. I hope that you're having a great summer, both of you!

I'm still floundering a bit at figuring out what real retirement actually means. I bought a new laptop this week which will make it easier to stay in touch--I learned a lot about my smart phone in the past couple months, but it's just too small for regular online work/play.

To update the LiveWell program, Carol: I finished the 12 weeks somewhat disappointed at what they offered. I went in telling them explicitly that what I needed was motivation and accountability. I didn't get that. The body analysis was helpful. I signed up for an extension of the program that allows me to pick the staff I want to meet with and to get more of the BodPod analysis. I want to meet with the dietitian and possibly the PT, but not the Life Coach.

Have a great weekend!

11 pm last night there is a knock at the door. Neighbor's daughter needing help. Two of her friends were stranded on the lake with a ski doo. No life jackets, one a non swimmer, and the worst? The ski doo did not even run. They had floated out there on a machine with a dead battery and no gas in it. Got the kids off safely, good thing I had a canoe and kayaks cause DH was out of town working and no one else in the neighborhood was awake. Yikes!

Another couple of hours in the kayak. Would have a lot more power and control if DH had assembled the paddles correctly. One upside down. But we got where we were aiming for.....

Our small rural county raised $104,000+, and still counting. I personally had sooo much going on at the same time that I managed to only get about12 miles in on the track. Our walkers all showed, we dodged storms, extremely humid heat, and still everyone did it. Pretty awesome. I had brought in our trailer so we were able to keep water in the frig. Felt really good about the $10,000+ the team raised. We raise our money through the luminaries we decorate for the track. So you can imagine how many luminaries were on the track from our team.

The celebration of life for my friend went very well. I managed to speak at it but could not change out of my Relay garb, but it served as an invitation for guests to attend Relay, which they did. AND the patriotic concert at the church last night. All which were Jim's favorite events. What a tribute to him, how well my church welcomed the family, and the worthiness of all the craziness of the past several weeks. I am flat out exhausted! And the tears still flood unexpectedly.

Well, I get to be a grandma watching grand daughter in a dance recital this morning. Will be fun to watch, and see how she handles the pressure. Last night she told me repeatedly she was "going in" all by herself. Age 3 barely. Last night we went to the playground, watched the car ferry come into the harbor, read multiple books, sang silly songs, and just plain hung out. Mom and dad were out to dinner in celebration of their wedding anniversary. They got home before we did.

Next weekend. Today am working on a couple of baskets for adults. By far the neatest one is a sweater coat my friend knitted while her husband was undergoing cancer treatment. About 15 different types and colors of yarn, all knitted in a V pattern on the back. Very artsy. Barb likes to knit but detests the finishing part which is where I come in. She is the artist, I am the finisher for many of our projects together over the years. Her work is so distinctive. Mine is the 'glue' that holds it all together. Quite the combination of skills.

Saw your post about roofing the shed. Great exercise, although I don't help with that anymore. Balance is not the greatest trying to actually get up on the roof, although I am a pretty good go-for.

What a beautiful day! Took dh to a strawberry ice cream social in honor of Father's Day, went on a short walk along the beach, got started on decorating luminaries for R F L, and just now sitting down to check in. Another busy day in the neighborhood.

Well, guess what! Moved dad back to a subsidized housing unit for handicapped adults in his home town. This week I get a call from a housing unit in my town that has an opening for dad. What craziness. We decided to NOT do this again for a while after all the weeks spent locating a place, getting online banking set up, address changes, etc. it is a zoo in this house at the moment. Please tell me this will end soon!

What a gorgeous day! Finally feel like spring has arrived. Now I need to find the time to get outside in my gardens. Dad is doing well. I am headed to Gladwin tomorrow to deliver a new medical alert system, which is GPS based and should be able to respond no matter where he is at. Me, I have not been to Curves in over a week. My shoulder is doing much better, meaning my PT will be dropped shortly. Yay! Very fast progress made faster by working the shoulder daily.

Good to hear from you, Kate. And Carol, it is almost that magical time of year for you---called summer break. Enjoy!

Cris and Carol, so good to read your posts. I'm so glad you found a place for your dad. We had frost here too.

Sorry I've been out of touch. Still using only cell phone. I just spent a week with W and his brother and wife traveling to the guys' home town for their HS reunion. W had not been back since graduation. We rented a landslide cabin across the lake from their child hood home. A lot of fun but tiring. I haven't been on track for eating or exercise and the scale shows it. Walked Z this morning and will go to gym later to get back on track.
Take care, Kate

Dad moved, his house is on its way to being cleaned. And I got it done with no weight gain which is awesome given dad and I ate out most meals. What a whirlwind week it has been. Now DH and I are heading to the Indy 500 and a visit with our Indiana grandkids. Never have been to a car race of any kind, so this is. Gonna be interesting.

welll, it was too soon to count on spring being here for good. We were hit with a severe frost and temps around 30. Yep, what flowers managed to survive winter are frostbitten. On the positive side, it was sunny and we got a quick walk around the park. Felt soooo good.

I hope all goes well with your dad!

Things here have been busy. I've been on track with my exercise... at least 5 days each week. I eat healthy most of the time, but every once in a while indulge. I guess those indulgences have kept my progress moving slowly. At least I'm moving slowly in the right direction! LOL!

Opening for apartment in dad's hometown opened and he is moving next week. Hope this is the right decision because it is extremely easy to doubt my decision making these days. Anyway, perhaps back to a less frantic pace? Yay!

Hard to get back to reality this morning. This should be dad's final week with us, but there is still no opening for him. So, I may be trying to arrange in home services back in his own home instead. Starting to make trips back to his house to get some badly needed cleaning done. Should be able to get some deep cleaning housekeeping hours in. Struggle to not feel sorry for myself some times, which is pointless. We have two parents who need monitoring but there are other siblings who are also helping with my mother-in-law.

Hi all! I am sitting here at my campsite listening to peepers, birds, and someone's soft country western music. Totally relaxed for the first time in months.

When I get back home (only about 10 miles away) have to start working on Relay for Life and my friend's funeral dinner both scheduled for the same day. Yikes! Okay, gotta stop thinking for now and concentrate on relaxing! Can save the panic for later.....

Hi, Kater-C - Food is the area where I struggle too. I consistently get 5 days of exercise in, yet it's so difficult for me to lose weight! Maybe we can motivate each other. What do you think?

I'm struggling with making good food choices. Doing fine with exercise, but not getting it recorded. As far as checking in here, I had no idea how much using a phone rather than a computer would slow me down. I will be back.

Hi, everyone! I had a good weekend. Lots of exercise and I tracked all of my food, which is a major accomplishment for me. I get so lax on the weekends!

WEGENERCS - I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's husband. What a sad story. I think we've all been touched by cancer at one point or another... it never makes it easier. The C word sucks! I'll be keeping you, your friend and their family in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey, sunny here in Ludington. Only managed one workout this past week but it was a good one strangely, I have been helping Dad stick to his PT program by doing them with him. His are simple seated exercises intended to increase flexibility. Mainly stretches. Wellll, I am chuckling because in this process those simple exercises have really helped me with the shoulder!

On a very sad note, my best friend's husband died after a valiant war against blood and bone cancer. It has been truly a sad winter for our circle of family and friends. I find myself in tears when least expecting it.

Hello all!
Happy FRIDAY!!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!
Thanks for the info on the 21 day fix. Sounds like what I am doing now, but not as intense. My gym offers a program that really pushes you. Plus I run and spin. Trying to figure out what to do next:)

I am chuckling. We all have online friends, dear friends that we care about. I have mental pictures of these friends and their personalities. Wonder if these perceptions change when we actually meet.

I hope everyone is having a great Wed! Going through some old posts made me think... I actually met one of us last year!!

Doreen S. and I were fairly active in this group. She's a school psychologist in Alaska - I'm in VA. Anyhow, I went the National Assoc of School Psychologists (NASP ) Annual Convention in Seattle (Feb 2013) and finally met up with Doreen! Pretty cool! We had a blast together!

Hi, all! I've been doing 21 Day Fix and like it. It's a program by Beachbody and the instructor is Autumn Calibrese. I like the workout because they are varied (upper body, lower body, total body cardio, cardio, yoga, pilates, total body workout, etc.). They are not as intense as Insanity... but Insanity is how I blew my knee out a couple of years ago. Ugh! I'm getting older and I have to adjust. It's a pain.

Gina - The scale is evil! I know this, yet, I am somehow a slave to the numbers it shows me. BUT - I did a 3 week round of 21 Day Fix and stayed the same weight (lost 5 lbs the first week - and gained it all the last two weeks), but I lost INCHES... almost 8 inches total.... 2-1/2 on my waist alone! My pictures say it all. There is a huge difference in just three weeks! Yay!

Right now I don't have the time to do a lower impact class, and the elliptical is mindless, so that's it for a bit I guess! I also do Muay Thai twice a week, so there's that. Nothing I really do is super low impact... Whoops?

I'm starting the 21 day fix as my program in two days! I won't be doing the workouts though- sticking to my own plan that I've been doing with my boyfriend (he's a personal trainer), plus MT, conditioning class, and finishing out insanity!

Gina,
Honestly that is why I stay away from the scale. Running on top of Insanity might not be the best option. Maybe try something low impact like spin or cycle.
Don't want you to get injured:)

Welcome back, Terri!

Hi, everyone! I'm Terri and I am one of the Team Leaders fo this group... though I think it's been almost a year since I've been back to Sparkpeople! I'm glad to be back.

I'm 44 (how did THAT happen???) and I'm a School Psychologist in central VA - in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It really is beautiful here! I am married and have two boys that keep me on my toes. Between juggling work, soccer, baseball, hockey, friends, cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc., etc., I sometimes feel like I don't even have time to breathe! But I wouldn't have it any other way. :) I love my busy, crazy life.

I work out in the AM... or it will never get done. Right now, I'm doing the 21 Day Fix by Beachbody, but I switch back and forth. I don't belong to a gym because the nearest one is 30 minutes away in the opposite direction of work!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys.

Terri

Welcome to the team, Gina. I retired as a school psychologist in 2008, following 21 years in the same rural school districts. Prior to that, I was a social worker for Michigan Dept of Mental Health and Saginaw community Mental Health. Just shy 37 years overall. I miss the students but definitely not the craziness of the paperwork race. Retirement has been a very busy adventure. At the moment I am struggling to balance eldercare issues for an elderly parent without eliminating myself in the process. Spark People is a critical part of my day!

Getting enough water remains a challenge for me every day! Good day to all, Cris

That's the frustrating thing- i drink a gallon of water a day! I carry it with me to keep track. Weight is such a pain measure. And I do extra cardio on top of insanity! Maybe more running is in order. thanks!

One other thought for ya, sometimes upping my cardio helps with water retention also. An extra run or spin class and things usually go back to normal. I have to really be careful with hiw much I squat because my legs will swell pretty quickly.
Love walking it out though:)

Hey Gina,
Welcome to our team!!! Great job getting that paper done! I hope you had some time to relax with your boyfriend and your pup:)

To answer your question about water retention, which I have a suspiscion that is what is going on with your scale:

Be sure to drink lots of water. I do very similar to workouts to what you do and when I don't drink enough I can tell. My hands and legs retain water. My legs are especially noticeable when it comes to water retaining. I can retain 5-6 pounds just in my legs. They get very puffy after lifting and when I am very active. One thing I am actually getting ready to purchase is compression sleeves for my entire leg. I have calf sleeves right now but I want something more:) CEP is the company I use.

I also just stepped away from the scale. This is week 2 without any weight ins because it was driving me crazy. Up 3 down 3, up 4 down 4. I eat very well and I know that it is just fluctuations based on water. I am not a person that can eat the same things over and over, I know when I do the scale balances out but I also will end up eating everything in sight because it is not chicken or kale:)

Enjoy the sunshine!!!
Carol

Just call me Gina!

40 years- my goodness, I'm impressed. You see a lot of turnover here in Texas- it's a heavy load job. Is everyone here MA or PhD or both? Just curious!

So glad it's the weekend. Lots of snuggle time with the bulldog and my boyfriend. Plus, my report is done, 24 pages later! emoticon

Struggling to see the weight loss because I fluctuate so much during the week, which is irritating. I lift pretty heavy and do hard workouts, so it's frustrating not knowing if I'm retaining or if I'm not seeing loss. Any input?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Ginaleeut, thanks for the info. It has been years (nearly 40!!) since I was in Grad school, but I still remember how hard it was to balance everything. I'm glad that you're now finding time for yourself and not just your work. By the way, may we address you as Gina or GinaLee?

Cris and Carol, thinking of both of you. Have a good day at whatever you're doing.
