Take your time. Thinking is a good thing. Question: how many other teams do you belong to? I'm only on one other (Balance and Moderation) and haven't been active there.
Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. We went to my brother's house nearby--had a nice time with immediate family.

We've had a weird weather week or so. It was 60 degrees last Saturday, melting all the snow. Dropped below freezing on sunday and continued to drop. I walked Z yesterday, but the wind was so cold we came back early. today we just played in the yard.

Take care-I hope you enjoyed your day with nothing scheduled.

I'm looking forward to having lunch with three former co-workers at the American Swedish Institute--a museum in a large stone mansion. After lunch we'l tour the holiday decorated rooms.

Thinking of you, Cris. Take care, Kate

Your recipe is different from W's. His has only chopped oranges and cranberries and sugar.

I'm glad you had a good visit with your kids and grandkids. I went back to the gym this morning for the first time in a week, after taking a friend to the airport at 7am. Mom is doing pretty well for the time being--I'm very grateful for that. Did you get my SP email? Take care of yourself.

Did not get to curves while kids were here, but wishing finess points were available for playing with grandkids! Opening day of deer season marked 11 years since mom died. Not a day goes by when......she would have adored these great grand kids.

The cranberry orange relish turned out really well. I make it every Thanksgiving in memory of my brother who always made and brought it to dinner. Always made it a week or two ahead so the Orange zest thoroughly blended through the cranberries and apples. I have also used canned pineapple in it but at Thanksgiving never change Mike 's version. Really, really miss him. Fall is a struggle for me every year.

Cris,
My Mom seems to be doing better. Pulmonologist found no lung probs but referred her for allergy testing. W and I travelled 500+ miles round trip yesterday to attend his cousin's funeral in Iowa. A sad occasion, but good to see relatives that I've grown to love and that we don't see often at all.

It's snowing again and I'm still adjusting to that. Having trouble getting back on track with eating and exercise.

W is making cranberry/orange relish right now. I wonder how your recipes compare.

We had our first winter storm Sunday and yesterday--a combination of snow and freezing rain. Good exercise opportunity (shoveling), but not possible to walk the dog in our no sidewalk neighborhood. Luckily Zoe will wait to be called and then run to me across the yard for a treat. I need to fire up to use the treadmill again.

Take care,

Cris,
Good work on sticking to your workout goal in spite of challenges. I'm beginning to think our team should be called "The Caregivers." Mom had a mini health crisis last week which resolved, but left me with emotional aftershocks. I'm very grateful that she's cognitively ok--we talked about the incident this week. I feel weird being a team leader--do you want to sign on to be a co-leader too? You post more than I do.
Take care,

Good workout at Curves tonight, midst snow and high winds. Makes me want to burrow down with my knitting needles and yarn. Need to finish the felted slippers for the grand kids so I can get my pair started.

Dad's garage will be a challenge since I have no one to help. And treasures are buried in mice droppings, chewed up sunflower seeds, grime, pine needles, and dust. My family did not have much which seems to feed my need to look in dark corners and unopened boxes. Very old tools but not in good shape. Did find a broken scythe likely belonging to my great grandfather. Wish I had met him. The memories....

Cris, It is amazing what you can find in a man's garage. We went through that process six years ago when my parents sold their house and moved to senior housing. We filled two big dumpsters as we cleared out their house (with Dad sometimes pulling things back out when no one was looking). We also hired a local antique/junk dealer to clear out the basement and attic after we had packed whatever Mom and Dad or anyone else wanted. A very big job.

W and I spent a few days at a hotel on the shore of Lake Superior last week. It was a great getaway. Now getting back to reality.

Back in Gladwin, with more cleaning out dad's garage. What does one man expect to do with an old toolbox filled with broken screwdrivers! Worse yet, what on earth do I do with them? Couple of hours worth of fitness minutes, although much of that time was spent sneezing.....

Back from the gym. Two priorities (besides gym) today: finish Halloween costumes for a party tomorrow night and finish fall yard clean-up. DH was able to take the day off,so we'll get started after taking time to go out for breakfast. Also hired a neighboring teen-ager to join us after school.
Have a good day!

Flu shots--love/hate. Mom and I got ours yesterday. She reports that she's wiped out. I'm just a little slowed down and arm is sore.

Just back from a long walk with Z. The weather here is great. It would be good to get outside to do yard work, but I have a lot of paperwork that must be done first.

Thanks for sharing info about your background. We have come a long, long way from those dark days.

My first 15 professional years were spent working as a family case manager for adults who had a variety of developmental disabilities. By far my favorite group over the years. Definitely remember the days when there was nothing available like a sheltered workshop. And when the special education law was passed, I remember crying. It took soooo long to get that passed. And then most of my clients had to wait for the schools to gear up. Congrats to your sister and family.

No exercise this weekend. Took dad to get the flu and pneumonia shots and both of us got knocked down with severe aches in the arms and joints. Been a long day. But back home.
Kids live in Indiana and near Ludington. Everyone works long hours. Gonna be interesting for sure.

Cris,
You are so right that it's not easy! I can't remember what you've said about where your kids live. Could they be any help with your father?

I did the 65 mile round trip to my hometown yesterday for a banquet at which the nonprofit that runs my sister's sheltered workshop recognized milestones of years worked. Peg has now worked there 20 years! She is severely mentally handicapped due to brain injuries from a staph infection when she was only 7. I asked a friend to go with me because Mom was not up to it. We sat at a table with Peg, two of her group home workers and two other group home residents. Things like this bring me face-to-face with what she could have been and what she is. It's very hard, yet I'm grateful for the help and support she gets. I was also reminded how lucky I am that Mom and Dad chose to move to our town and that I'm not having to drive down there to help her now. l think of you and am sorry that you haven't be able to move your father closer to you. Take care, Kate

Keep up the good work!! I agree that walking with someone else is motivating and more enjoyable. W and I walked Z together Saturday and Sunday. I don't always remember to enter my workouts on SP. I'm in th3 11th week of going to the gym for strength training 3 times a week. It does feel so much better!

Fingers crossed that the weather holds for you. DH and I had planned to work on fall yard chores today, but we didn't set an alarm. Sleeping in was great, but put us behind schedule. Did get the old CPU and monitor hauled out of the basement and driven to recycling. That feels great and motivates me to get back at organizing our basement office. After I take apart the old computer desk and haul it out to the curb.

Cris,
Congratulations on accomplishing your goal of dropping committees! As you can tell by my absence from SP, I have been struggling with taking time for self too. We had a nice family birthday party for my sister's 60th on Sunday. She is severely handicapped due a staph infection of the brain years ago and lives in a group home. I'm proud of my self for being assertive when planning the party. Gave my brother's choices--host, make the cake, or travel the 60 miles to pick Peg up and/or return her. Bless them, they're willing to step up, but don't take the lead. One picked her up, one returned her, Mom hosted the gathering, and I made the cake.

Btw, there are times when I wish we lived closer and could actually get together for a walk and talk. You noted not missing the pace of work--I totally agree. I have not heard from Carol, but I haven't been on SP much for about 2 weeks--just spinning the wheel from my phone!

Take care,
Kate

Met first goal to drop a committee. Next goal is to do the same for a second. Good to not feel guilty about doing this today.

Spent a long sleepless night talking to myself about how to make life changes that will free up time for me to concentrate on personal well being. This entire year has been spent on meeting the needs of others at the expense of my own wellness. So, am practicing how to say no and will get the chance to use this new skill when I resign a couple of church committees this next week. Absolutely need to return to my daily walking program and Curves. Especially since I had paid for it. Wish me luck this week.

Rip and tearing today, literally. Worked with Steve to tear out a small deck from a log house, taking out rotted wood, and rebuilding. What a job! Lost count of steps up and down from the second floor. All day long. Legs are screaming tonight.

yeah, a most interesting week it was. But today is another day, sunny in my part of Michigan. I sense a nice long walk this afternoon. Have you heard from Carol? So many of my former coworkers are really swamped, literally from day 1. As busy as I am, cannot imagine trying to work in a 50-60 hr work week. Remembering those days, plus the summers so many people thought we had--lol. Tons of paperwork that could only get done in the summers. Yikes!

Cris,
So sorry you had a difficult week. Parkinson's is a nasty disease. My maternal grandmother had it, as did my father-in-law. Take care of yourself too.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my father's death. We gathered immediate family here for the afternoon, just to be together and hang out.

As my weight reflects, I've been having great difficulty with staying on track with healthy eating. This week has to be the week that I get back on track.

Take care,
Kate

Was just reminded after a difficult week trying to support my father and Aunt Vera with their struggles and Parkinson's Disease, I was reminded that there are now fives cases in my immediate family that covers both sides. Am seriously thinking about genetic testing, for the future benefit of grandkids. Hope there is good treatment for this horrible disease in the future that can be available.

Mowed the front yard (did the back yesterday), then sat on patio to read the morning paper. It's a beautiful sunny day here. I'll go to the gym later after taking Mom to a medical appointment.

Hope all is well with both of you.

Cris, So glad to hear your neighbor will be all right! I agree, a relaxing low-key birthday is just the ticket. I spent a lot of time yesterday moving the hose to water flowers, trees, and bushes because no rain was predicted for at least a week. Woke up in the early hours of the morning to rain on the roof. That made it easy to turn off the alarms and cuddle. I don't mind walking Z in the rain or in the cold, but not both. It's stopped raining, but now I have to wait until the plumber leaves.

Have a good day!

Hi, all. Another cold rainy day, great day to work indoors. Finally received word about our young neighbor and the recent Ski Doo accident. She is soooo fortunate. 50 staples to close the head wound but no hospital stay. Wow!

Kate, you sound like you had a relaxing birthday. Cannot ask for more, right? Carol, how is school going?

Cris, that's a big wind gust. Good thing you weren't out there at the time! I enjoyed celebrating my birthday yesterday, having lunch with Mom and going out to dinner with W at a favorite restaurant. Tomorrow we're going to continue the party with a day trip to a favorite lake-walking, shopping, eating out. My SP part of the plan is to take a cooler with ice with cold beverages and to be able to bring part of whatever I order home for another day.

Take care (you too, Carol),

We survived our windy cold walk yesterday. Today it's sunny, but even colder---only 45 degrees at 9:15am. I refuse to turn on the furnace this early, but may have to add a hat to my indoor attire! Or, I may go out and mow--that would warm me up.

Cris, What a good neighbor you are. I hope Noel has a full recovery. Also, the camping sounds wonderful.

It's cold and rainy here--feels like late fall. I'm going to figure out what to wear and take Z for a walk anyway. We both need it!

Got a super bicycle ride in a couple days, only smashed into one gate doing so which rammed my bike chain right smack dab onto my leg. Some super strange bike chain tracks. Sigh....

We had a wonderful two days camping and time spent around the campfire with Steve's sibs. Many years too long in the making but making progress. His mother's estate is settled. Now on to the healing part.

About an hour after getting home we heard the neighbor girl head out on her jet ski. Next thing I am hearing screaming. We headed over to her house and found a seriously injured girl. So spent the rest of the afternoon working with 911, first responders, Steve keeping towels tightly wrapped around her head, and me generally trying to keep folks calm. Talk about a challenge. I am afraid of these machines and this experience did not change my mind. Praying Noel is ok. I suspect this was a very long night for everyone. We certainly did not sleep well.

Starting week 6 of three times a week to the gym. It feels really good to get back to a routine in at least one area of my life. Feeling guilty that I'm not doing more around the house (cleaning/cooking) given that I'm retired and W is working more than full time.

Hope all is well with the rest of you. Take care,

There's always plenty of inside work, isn't there? It's gray and cold (for this time of year) here. Only 57 at 9:45am. It will be great for mowing. We have our church annual Rally Sunday with outside worship and games and barbecue. Hope it's a little warmer for that.

Experiencing same weather here. Kids just left so it is quiet in our house. After 5 days of extreme activity and noise created by two three year olds and a one year old, I am ready for some quiet time. Miss them already, however.

Yesterday I came back from walking Zoe wet because we got caught in the rain that wasn't supposed to start until later. Today I was dripping/drenched again--this time due to extremely high humidity. Now trying to figure out if it's actually going to rain because I told Mom I'd pick up groceries for her--not eager to get soaked all over again.

Hope all is well with both of you.

Cris,
thank you for continuing to post here. I'm happy to catch up with you. I can't believe how time flies-----when I thought I'd have so much of it! I've realized that I depended on the structure of work to organize my time. Now I need to work on a new plan. My first steps have been to commit to fitness. I'm at the beginning of week 5 of three times a week trips to work out at the gym. Meanwhile family, church, dog, and yard work needs all go on. I'm happy to be relaxed and not stressed by work as I juggle.

Enjoy the grandkids!!

Carol, I read your September blog. It sounds as if you are in a great place mentally and physically these days. I'm happy for you.

Both of you take care,
Kate

Another family funeral today followed by really fun visits with family I have not seen since childhood. Funerals are such lose-win situations. Battled dad's overgrown bush later which took much longer than expected. Those bushes have gradually grown into trees. Good exercise but a real pain.

Wow, CarolI there is a real bounce in your words. I am sooooo pleased to read about keeping your teaching responsibilities in check. Wish I had done that. It takes a ton of courage to tackle the anxiety producing stuff and to let it go. Let it go is a mantra worth printing on a huge poster and hanging on your wall. I can see you dressed in your exercise clothes, fist in the air, grin on your face......you may find that you will stay teaching longer, or you may leave the profession for what inspires you. Yay you!

Day 1 of 3 with this new skin med, Picato. The burning was immediate. And while parts of my face is bright red, wouldn't you know that I have a retiree luncheon on Thursday and a funeral for my uncle on We'd. Both in different parts of the state and both when I wish my face was intact. Going to miss Uncle Marvin a lot. That leaves me with my father and three aunts. Sum total of family.

No active exercise today. Not supposed to sweat while on the med. Funny!

Spent over 3 hrs on the Resorter yesterday, traveling by water from Pentwater to Ludington and back. Thanks for the clothing suggestions. Thinking of adding a floppy hat to the mix.

Next adventure is another go around with sun damage on my face that has not responded to treatment, sun screen usage, and wearing hats. Not cancer yet but will end up that way if this continues, so trying a new drug. Sigh.....very expensive but a huge chunk of the copayment was covered by the drug company because of the cost. Lucky.that way. Will keep you posted about my success.

Continue to work outside in my gardens, but not supposed to sweat with this particular drug. Again, ugh!

Carol, how are you doing? School must be starting for you.

I thought I had misread, when I read tons of rocks. Cris, you are amazing!!! The old boat parade sounds fun. As to what women wore---I'm trying to remember what my Mom wore in the summer. Sundresses, pedal pushers---we didn't have a boat, so don't have boat specific memories.

My news is that I have now completed three weeks of three times a week gym workouts. Heading for four weeks. Looking forward to tomorrow--a family get-together at my brother's house to catch up with my niece, who's back from an out of state summer internship and about to head to Spain for the first semester of her Junior year.

Take care,
Kate

Forgot to add that I will also be on one of those old boats as part of the old boat parade. Image vintage boats on the channel that opens into Lake Michigan. Just the way folks used to travel on the water so many years ago between harbors. Steve still has about a year's worth of work before finishing his 1950 Century Resorter. Then we will be in the same parade in our own boat. Thinking I want to dress the part when we do that. What did the well dressed woman wear while boating in the 1940s and early 1950s?

Moved 3 tons of stones for a friend today. Yep, you read right. Thankfully a neighbor saw what we were doing and offered to help move some of it. Then got to rake all those stones. Ugh! Finished my day by tending my own garden. Decided that shoveling and raking stones is not on my 'fun' things to do list.

All our company is gone, so now perhaps I can get some outside work done. Bulbs to dig up and irises to divide. Even our landscape pro has no more suggestions for what to plant that the deer will leave alone. Sooo, looking like my gardens will be full of irises, allium, salvia, Liguaria, and lavender. Deer have eaten a small fortune. I see lots of weeding in the very near future.

Cris, That's great-130 steps and a great reward. I'm back home again trying to get into a routine. I used to say that taking time for exercise was nonnegotiable, but somehow that slipped away from me. I'm back at it again--two weeks of three times a week to the gym. Going for four in a row (weeks).

Have a great week!
Kate

PS Carol, I hope that your boot camp has gone well and that you haven't had problems with all the East Coast rain.

Hey, forgot to share my latest experience that included vertical steps. A friend is a volunteer lighthouse keeper who takes turns moving from lighthouse to lighthouse on the Great Lakes. This past weekend he started a 2 week stint at Big Point Sable. We we bumped into him at a local fish market where we were eating perch with our guests. That is when Doug invited us for a private tour to view a magnificent Lake Michigan sunset from the top of the lighthouse. We had been there several times in the past but never ever at 8 pm at the top. 130 steps to the top (great cardio) rewarded by a brilliant gold, red orange, and lavender sunset. And when it touched the water, the water lit up with pinkish gold rays of sunlight, just before gently disappearing. Want a moment of reflection and gratitude? That was it!

Have a good one, ladies!

Yep, sure do. Many days. I am fortunate to have an iPad and iPhone because I could literally check in every single day anywhere, for the most part. And having this team, no matter how small, I somehow felt the need to post even when really mentally tired. Not sure what that was all about since I did not feel the same compulsion for my other teams. You and Carol kept me plugged in. Yep, you did.

cris, I know that you understand this--while caring for my mom after her second carpal tunnel surgery I'm having trouble finding time to get online. I LOVED the story of the boulder!! I was crying by the time I finished it. What a wonderful, loving, romantic gift!
I wondered about you and the rain. Sorry you're getting dumped on and that your dad had another fall.
take care,
Kate

In Gladwin for the next couple of days. Dad fell and broke his nose. Thought I could get some badly needed work done outside but Mother Nature dumped a lot of rain on us. No exercise today..

Another interesting day. There is a boulder outside my dad's house, a huge granite rock that I used to sit on along with my red cocker spaniel, named Pet. Mind you this rock was hauled by tractor and chain from a ditch that had just been built, back in the 1950s. All these years whenever mom asked what I would like to inherit when the time came, I always asked for the rock. Everyone would laugh but my answer was always the same. Mom has been gone for almost 11 years and dad cannot live in his home any longer. So the rock stood a good chance of remaining there for whomever bought the house. Until today. Steve took the tractor, a huge chain, and his truck and hauled that rock 110 miles to our home. And today it is in my flower bed where I can watch other kids climb on it, and remember....it literally is the remaining link to my past. And, yeah, I am in tears.

Wow! What an amazing gift and what a lot of work. We're sitting on our patio trying to decide what we want to do after our plans for a day trip fell apart due to friends illness. We could just stay ho m e and do chore s. Not motivated for that. Later

Great exercise day yesterday. 5 walking miles, 3 hrs loading and unloading lumber into our kiln.
Cherry tree grown here, cut here, milled here, transported to our local shop and kiln here to dry, to be ultimately hand crafted (yes, by Steve and myself) into a dining room table for son #1 wedding's gift that was due in 2007! A tad late, but guaranteed to be an heirloom for generations. Only regret is that the tree had to be cut down to begin with.

Today I am lazy.

A great turnout for your church camp, Kate. We just finished a camp session dedicated to children who have experienced losses in their lives. Dealing with grief is so difficult at all ages, but cannot imagine for a child.
