Kate I am so sorry you are not feeling well. You gotta listen to your body and rest.

I think you have the right idea about the streak...it's how long you can go. So if you track three days and then miss start again and see how long you can go when you start over.

Let me know what you think and we can do that for the rest of the month if you like or longer...

Cris and Carol,
I'm glad everyone had a good holiday. Christmas was good, but our New Year's got derailed. My husband came down with a nasty gastro virus on Sunday. Just as he was recovering, I came down with it. Should have gone back to work yesterday, but no go. I'm healing now, but don't plan to try to go back to work until next week.

Tell me more about how a food recording challenge would work. I certainly need the motivation, but realistically, I won't be able to record every day. I would be willing to try for my own personal best longest streak, starting over when I miss a day.

Hmmm, I rather like the idea of a food tracking streak challenge. Really need to get back doing that regularly.

Alright team,
The new year is upon us. What challenge should I set up for us? More mileage tracking? Food tracking streak?
Let me know your thoughts and I will hook us up.

Been another busy week at the Wegeners. Figure about another 2 weeks before the lower level is finished. The ceiling is always an interesting adventure. It's directly fastened to the floor joists rather than doing a drop ceiling. Takes up a lot less head space (our house is older). Lots of reaching and up/down ladders. Wish I knew more about being a builder's helper (grins...) but then dh does not know how to knit either!

Cris,
Your Christmas sounds peaceful and lovely. I'm lucky to still have both of my parents. I was able to tell Mom that I thought of her, as I always do, when making sugar cut-out cookies using the recipe we always used at home. We celebrated a family Christmas at my brother's house in a nearby suburb on Christmas Eve and entertained assorted friends and family at our house on Christmas Day. It was fun, but I'm now enjoying some down time.

Carol, I'm hoping that you had safe travels and a good Christmas..

Hoping you had a wonderfully peaceful Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed making my kitchen smell like I remember my mother do so many years ago. Ahhhh, the smells of Christmas. Tried out a couple of new recipes, which Steve helped with on Christmas Eve. A new tradition we're starting, it seems, since the kids are celebrating with their own now. It is as it is supposed to be right? Snow falling, watching Christmas movies, attending evening church services, and thinking of Christmases past. The memories of it all.......

Hey Cris, I am thinking we are going to have to pull up our carpet once we are ready to move to. The dogs have really done a number on it. I am ready for hardwood floors. I am afraid of what we will find here if we tear up the carpet. Our neighbors told us one of the previous owners drove a motorcycle into the living room....not sure if I wanna see what's underneath.

Totally crazy day here. Frustrated dh, and am sure my cat was laughing at us. Old houses are never predictable when remodeling is involved. And expensive!

Yes, the shooting in CT is terrible. I cannot imagine what the families are going through. I saw an interview with the school nurse who hid in the closet for 4 hours. Terrible, terrible situation.

Good for you Kate. What is effective in keeping us moving forward is what we need to do. I've been so preoccupied this past week with the horrible situation in Conn. Such a loss of precious life. So proud of the staff who did what they could to save lives even at the cost of their own. As a retired sch psych There were only a couple of times when I was uncomfortable meeting with a parent or student. But never, ever felt my life was in danger. Sooooooo sad.

Thinking of you both and happy to hear from you. Still swamped on all fronts, but implementing the Beck Diet Solution. Cris, you asked about it. I will write more later, but it's a cognitive behavioral program developed by Aaron Beck's daughter, Judith Beck. I heard her daughter, Deborah present. Judith has several books out. There are also a couple SP Beck Diet teams. I joined one, but haven't had time to participate. SP and the two of you have been great for getting me started on working out and keeping me motivated, but I haven't connected with the food part. Beck eventually requires you to keep track of food, so I will certainly use that to motivate me to put it into SP.

Later,
Kate

Done and mailed! Snow this morning--very pretty. Off to finish my shopping and then it' s an afternoon to work on Brayden's grandma's book. For the next grandchild I'm going to work toward an online version. This handwriting version is way too much.....tomorrow we're off to a holiday concert at Ferris State University where our friend plays in their symphony. So looking forward to seeing Patrick again.

Hi, all! Welllll, today was sunny out and what was I doing ??? Grrrr.....even as I rethink it! Writing out Christmas cards. Funny how something that is supposed to bring warm fuzzies drives me crazy every single year. And it was my choice--write cards or get outside. Stupid, or what??? OK, ladies, am going to rethink my rethinking (chuckles..........)

Kate--my fitness goal is decided a lot like what Carol is talking about. I started in 2010 by calculating 30 minutes/day X 365 (10,950 minutes). Then calculated what I actually had done that year (remember beating the goal), and added to that. Think it was adding another 500 minutes (not much when you divide it out). I'm within about 100 fitness minutes of meeting my goal for 2012 which was over 11,000. I'd planned to have that met by November, but that was a total washout. Will have it done, hopefully, this next week. BTW, I count moderately brisk minutes, excepting for the times spent with the remodeling and landscaping projects. Those minutes were pretty intense AND not all of them could be counted because they far exceeded the 120 minutes we are allowed to record on SP.

When I work on my 2013 goals, will get back with you and let you know what I decided to work toward (and how I come to those numbers). Later all--Cris

Hey all!
Kate, being consistent is key. Tracking food is pretty time consuming, but I find it so much easier to look at what I am eating. I know what types of foods help my work outs:) As far as the yearly goal, I think I set mine to beat the previous year's. It is calculated based on how much you work out each week. I agree, tracking it would be a great goal for 2013. Time to start thinking about my own goals:)

Cris, I hope you are feeling much better:) Congrats on your new addition!

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend! Let's end this year strong!!!

Cris,

Great to hear from you! I'm glad your hip and back issues are getting better and how lucky you are to have another grandchild on the way!

I have a question about your fitness goal for the year--how did you decide on the actual number? I haven't set a goal like that before and I'm thinking it would be a good idea for 2013.

71.7+2.9=74.6; back from a walk in the park literally! Making slow gains with back and hip issues, but this walk produced very little pain (a sign that things are better). I haven't done much this month and reported even less. But I really do want to achieve the fitness minutes goal I set a year ago and will do this. So, have December yet to go and then will set a higher walking goal for 2013 based on 2012 achievement. Feels good!

Working on grandma book for Brayden's birthday coming up, and the kids have just shared they have another on the way. Take care, everyone. You are in my thoughts often. C

I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in several weeks and walked the beast this morning. I weighed myself and saw the consequences of being off track. I've started entering my food again.

Have a good rest of the week!

Carol and Cris,
Sorry I've been missing in action. Between work and hosting Thanksgiving, it's been crazy! I've let events get me off track for healthy eating and exercise, so today is the beginning of a fresh start--walked the pooch this morning before work and will go to gym after work.

Cris, thanks for the reminder that there's life after work. I love reading about you activities. And Carol, I love following your journey--you inspire with your attitude and your energy level.

Quiet, peaceful day with a couple of meetings and then getting ready for the art center's holiday craft show on Saturday. Enjoyed the quiet and my view of the lake. Always soothes the soul.

Truly, enjoy tomorrow especially because you have little ones. These occasions create memories that will sustain you at future times. Today my daughter-in-law sent me a picture of our little grand daughter, age 18 months, sitting on Santa's lap absolutely screaming her head off and pointing her finger! This was taken in a studio to boot. Told Andrea that she should make this into a Christmas card with the tag line, 'You cannot fool me into thinking this guy in the red suit is the real deal.' Hilarious!!!

Hi, all! Back from a visit with dad. He's struggling with the realities of Parkinson's disease, meaning he thinks there is a medicine out there that will cure it. I'm hoping the medication he's on will help with his tremors and that he can manage to stay in his own home for a while--especially since he won't consider anything else. Been a trying few days, truthfully.

Meanwhile, staying with him made me doubly thankful for good health! Steve set up the tread mill so it's now up to me to use it!

Peace to you, and enjoy the holiday with your families.

I don't have a fitbit either. I haven't researched it enough to make any comments about it:)

Glad you are possibly getting a partner, Kate! I am sure that will be a huge help!

No FitBit, although I know someone who does. She temporarily lost it on my recent mission trip and was frantic trying to find it (hear it's not cheap). Apparently it is compatible with a number of devices.

Enjoying my ipad and iphones--opens up lots of possibilities. Plan to take it to Florida rather than trying to pack my lap top and all those cables. Very portable.

Glad to hear from both of you. Just remember, there is life after working lots of years. Just gotta figure out how to survive the game we call life so we can enjoy ourselves. Trust me, I never thought to be this busy, but most of it is my doing. I an innate compulsion to volunteer! Tnto! (translates: try not to laugh!)

Cris and Carol,
Thanks for the advice and support. I'm working down my list of things to check out re: retiring early while at the same time trying to address problems directly. My boss actually took time to meet with me and heard me today. She asked what would help. I had minor suggestions and was shocked when she asked what I thought about hiring someone to help. A good lesson to me to be more open to possibilities. I was sure there was no money in the budget to do that, so hadn't mentioned it. Of course she will need supporting data to present to our special ed director, but telling her that we weren't meeting due process deadlines got her attention. I have been saying this for weeks to her and the other administrators I work with, but was finally heard!

On the tech front, congrats Cris. It will be fun to hear what you discover. Also do either of you have a FitBit? I'm intrigued by what I read and hear about it.

Cris:) So good to hear from you!
Love that you got some new toys and thank you also for your perspective.

I asked for an IPAD for Christmas and am not really sure about the apps for it. I don't use the apps on my phone. Let me know if you figure it out though. I might be tempted to use it:)

I haven't been online much this past 3 weeks, so am just now catching up. I felt your pain (both of you) through the writing. This is my 4th year into retirement and I can still remember the discouragement voiced by many, and it wasn't just in my age group. It cut across age, type of job, etc. What I've heard/seen from former team members is that staff has become increasingly protective of their time away from the office. They are not as apt to volunteer for committees (that's really different from what things were like just a few years ago). And many have become proactive to ensure they have addressed the possibility of qualifying for an early retirement. Don't know if this will help (it did me)--link with at least one person with whom you absolutely do not talk about work. Talk about your dogs, your grandkids, your hobbies, SP, anything. Just not work. Don't know how your contracts read (or if you still have one these days) but check out how personal days are handled--and then use them. My contract only allowed for 2-3 per year and only then under certain conditions, but staff used them. I knew staff who made regular use of 'mental health' days; had mixed feelings about that in some cases, but I remember being so dragged down that I did call in sick one day and slept the entire day. Read, go to the gym, your church, whatever gets you away from the chaos in the work place.

I started recognizing the burn out in myself during the last 3 years; what made it tolerable was the planning that went into figuring out a retirement date--and sticking to it. Kate--if you can retire mid year and you find you need to--do it. I had an office partner do that and she told her supervisor what she was planning to do ahead of time (at beginning of the year, for example). Then she did it. Yes, her assignment was simply divided among the rest of us for the remainder of the year--even with the advance notice. But she did what she needed to do for her own health. And, Carol, you nailed it when you suggested making walks a priority. Anything to take the focus off work.

Hey! I have some non work questions. I bought 2 ipones and an ipad last week (shocked the kids!). Do you like the Facebook app that I can download onto my 'devices' (I'm even using the lingo). I read mixed reviews--but are there are choices? Also, have you downloaded the SP apps? From what I"m seeing, there are at least 2 apps (exercise, recipes, etc). Is there one to access the entire site rather than piecemeal? I'm rather enjoying my new toys!!! Know this is long--a lack of words has never been a problem for me!

Thinking of you--Cris

Oh Kate,
I am so sorry to read about your situation. I am all for retiring now and I have 20 years left! I know there is no way I will make it another 20. I barely made it to 10.
Sending positive energy your way!

Have you and your hubby been able to get your walks in? The gym has helped me a lot this year! Instead of eating like there is no tomorrow after school I have been hitting the gym! Loving the new class. So challenging and rewarding to see progress:) Plus the class is starting to get harder! LOVE IT!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! It is supposed to be so nice here:)

Glad to hear that you're cleared for walking, Cris. Your ankle must be much better. I'm also glad to hear that you're having good weeks, Carol. I'm having a miserable time at work as we move toward a merger with our neighboring education cooperative. I've let it affect my mood and coping skills way too much. I'm considering whether I can swing retiring before the end of the school year. I know I have to get control of my attitude to stop the unhealthy coping choices which are leading to weight gain. Thanks for listening (reading).

Yay, I have clearance for walking again. DH is going to get the treadmill up and running, so I can start indoors. Just don't want to get out of the habit. Have now cleared 1,000,000 steps during the past 218 days. Yippee--unfortunately that is 4587 steps/day, far less than planned. Tells me to get moving more. Pedometers have a way of confronting excuses without judging. Sigh.....how's all with you?

Cris and Carol, good to hear from both of you. I was starting to worry about you, Cris, because I thought you'd been back for awhile. So sorry to hear about your ankle! And now, of course, I'm worrying about you, Carol. I hope that you and your house are okay and you have power. What a scary storm!

I've been missing in action because I'm so buried in work. It has turned out to be a crazy year and I'm struggling to keep my head above water (metaphorically). Will update mileage later.

Take care,
Kate

48.7+23=71.7; walked in some of God's most beautiful country! Learned a lesson--be wary walking after dark. Watch out for shallow drainage ditches! Sometimes there are rocks in the bottom covered with leaves--great way to sprain an ankle (yep, that's what happened).

I'm back! Just didn't get back to SP as soon as I'd hoped (an interesting story for another time). The mission trip was pretty impressive. My team of 5 built a 20X30 deck (including 2 sets of steps, clean up, rip/tearing) in 4 days. Talk about being challenged (and sore!). I'm a great go-for, clean up person--wasn't prepared for the power equipment part. This trip made me doubly appreciate what I have (& don't have); even though I grew up in poverty similar to what we saw in this part of the mountains, it's easy to forget when life has been much kinder to me than to many of these mountain families. What an eye opener--people were so appreciative of our efforts. But, can you imagine the feelings when local folks were asking for the rotted lumber we were prepared to burn--what we saw as rotten, they saw as a fence.

Later with my walking miles, when I can locate my last entry. Adding 23 miles total.

We had a great vacation. Hiked to the spot in my new profile photo--Lookout Point. It's high above Gunflint Lake. We stayed in a cabin at a lodge on Gunflint Lake. After going through the ground school (only 10 feet off the ground), I didn't do the zip line tour, but for a reason I hadn't seriously considered. I have osteoarthritis in my hands--wear custom braces. I was not comfortable with my braking ability. They would have let me continue--they had explained how they would stop someone coming in to the platform too fast, but warned that you could end up with whiplash. My husband did it and had a good time. This strengthens my resolve to get serious about losing the weight. It will be easier to brake when I weigh 50 -60 pounds less!

Carol,
Thanks for the encouragement. We leave early tomorrow morning. I'll be out of touch with SP until Saturday or Sunday. I'll post an update. There's another factor in the do or don't of the Canopy tour. My brother and first cousins drove up to do it a week ago, but couldn't because it was shut down due to snow and ice! They hiked instead. We're taking winter gear and boots just in case. I may be very glad that we have a cottage with a fireplace and a hot tub!
Have a good rest of the week and weekend!

I'm creeping toward my destination of Pepin Wisconsin. Meanwhile, I have a school break this week--Thursday and Friday off. We're driving to stay at a cabin at a lodge in far northern Minnesota--the other side of the lake is Canada. There are multiple great hiking trails and--fingers crossed--the weather will permit us to take the Canopy tour, a 2 hour zip line tour through the treetops. I've never done something like this before, so we'll see if I can master my fear of heights to do it. My brother met some cousins up there a week ago to do the Canopy tour, only to have it cancelled due to snow! They hiked anyway and came back with great photos.

Carol, I"m interested in your blog challenge, but need clarification--are you saying pick any of the topics to write on or are you saying that everyone will write on the topic of the day?

Carol,
Thanks for the Spark Goodie. I was shocked to see my name at the top of the list. I'm sure it's because I signed up for two week free trial of SparkCoach and have done some of the suggested activities. I'm needing some kind of motivational kick right now and thought SparkCoach might do the trick. So far, I like the daily visualization suggestions and the videos. Haven't decidecd if I"m going to pay for it when trial runs out.

Cris, I hope that all is well with you. We've had a hard freeze here--goodbye flowers. What about you?

Cris, I've never heard of ArtPrize. It sounds fabulous!

Carol, I'm enjoying hearing about your new CrossFit class. It sounds like so much fun for people who are already fit and looking for a new challenge.

It feels like winter here--33 degrees this morning. I'm looking forward to lunch with friends from grade school. Haven't seen some of them in more than 30 years!

36.4+10.8=47.20/128; slowly creeping my way. Any of you ever heard of Artprize in Grand Rapids, Mich. 3 weeks of art spread out all over the city. Top prize of $250,000. What a trip. Everywhere I look, there was art--sidewalks, top of buildings, towering over streets, massive pieces of art in the river, it was absolutely awesome! Lots of walking which was difficult because of the slower pace and people everywhere.
