I am going natural too. I am in that weird stage mostly natural and some perm hair towards the end. I am not that strong to cut all my hair off so I will let it grow out. I find that if I wrap my hair and tie it up I am not sweating it out as much. But I am looking forward to wear my hair curly

If you like the way your hair looks wet here is a recipe that works

ecostyle gel (olive oil)
5 ounces shea butter
2tbp of your favorite oil
Mix with the blender until smooth
If you apply this to wet hair and then let dry you should be able to keep the style for 3 days. Just make sure to wear a bonnet at night and if need be spritz your hair with water in the morning

Enjoy the journey.. it is a ride worth taking!

I'm natural and currently my hair is in mini twists, which I'm finding is perfect for workouts. I still cowash often but that's just a personal preference, not a necessity. If you don't want to wet your hair down daily maybe a curly style like a rod set or a coil out would better suit you, those styles actually look better the older they get in my opinion. Good luck!

I use the same conditioner @ ROGUETEACHER. I am also going to try the olive oil and peppermint oil that JDUBBS07 uses. I tried Carols Daughter and it didn't work too well. The Cantu is doing pretty good, just want a few other options.

I agree that it just takes time to figure out what you hair likes. I also don't have a ton of money to spend on products, so I have to make due with what I can afford. I like the Shea Moisture line of products because they smell great, work for my hair, and each products is $10. I also use Cantu Shea Butter leave in condition everyday and it keeps my hair from getting too frizzy. If you are looking for new ways to style it, look to YouTube for great instructions.

You are welcome. It takes learning what your hair likes and doesn't like. I had to try a variety of products to find what my hair liked. I also had a lot of trial and error in the beginning until I found a routine that works for me.

I didn't know if it was good to wet it everyday. I just wet it when I take my shower. I use a leave in conditioner and I go. Years ago when I was pregnant and I was getting my hair pressed, my hairdresser used olive oil. I am going to try it in the morning. My hair is so light I try not to use anything too heavy. Thank you ladies!!!

Wetting your hair provides the moisture you need. After co-washing, you should seal in the moisture using olive oil. Not the products, but actual olive oil. Is there a reason you are opposed to wetting it daily? Styling your hair should only be done while it is wet. Dry styling is hard on the hair and makes it harder to work with.

Work it going au naturale. I've been natural for 50 years & I cannot imagine any other way! There a far better grade of products on the market today then even in the heudays of the 70's although I went natural prior.

Hello,

I have been natural for 9 months now and prior to that I spent 4 months "transitioning" my permed hair. I was hard as the permed hair would get tangled and the natural hair would get dry. Now sounds like we have different hair types, I am a 4b kinky curly. Nonetheless the mixture of natural and permed hair is hard to work with. I say do the big chop and rock an Afro. I did it and I loved it life is easier with one type of hair. I have even added swimming to my workout routine. Also look on you tube there are plenty of videos on styles and product reviews.

Also I highly recommend you get a Denman brush, it works wonders on defining curls.
I use the Pantene relaxed and natural conditioner for my co wash, it smells good and it's fairly cheap. Do feel obligated to use any full product line, I often mix and match. Expensive does not always equal better.

Good luck.

I would not suggest blow drying unless you allow the hair to air-dry first and then lightly blow dry. But I would not blow dry from a totally wet state. After washing you can put your hair in plats/braids/ponytails/twists or any style that will allow it to dry untangled overnight. The best products for natural hair are in the produce aisle of your local grocery store. I recently discovered avocado...OMG, it is the best thing for my hair. It leaves it soft and shiny. Other products/things you may want to try are:
Conditioner Wash (No-Poo) - washing your hair with a light conditioner
Shampoos with no Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate
Products with no 'cones' (dimethicone or any ingredient ending in 'cone')
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (non-refined)
Coconut Oil

I also suggest shopping at your local health food store for hair products as well. Natural and organic products work better. Search the internet for 'natural hair'. You will find a wealth of information.

Blow drying it too much can really harm your hair. I would do what the other ladies suggested and try braids, or twist-outs. I have been natural going on 5 years now and love it. I love the way my hair does so many different things and the fact that I can exercise without worrying about my hair.

Good luck on your natural hair journey.

Are twists something you have to get profesionally done? I posted a blog about my hair with pics if anyone is interested.

Twists are a good idea. I wear my hair in a twist out. I like blacKandi's idea of putting a twist out that's a few days old into a puff or an updo.

Being natural is not for the weak-hearted and doesn't come easily. For as many years as i've been natural I learn new stuff about my hair everyday. Taking care of natural hair is an ongoing adventure. You have to get to know your hair and what works for you...RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!

But you could not pay me to put another chemical in my head. I feel my hair now truly expresses who I am. I'm never going back to the creamy crack!!! emoticon

I've been natural for about 3 years. Instead of cutting it all off, I had some cut, then a sew in, then a cut, and another sew in, etc.

Now I'm trying to wear it natural, but my beautician says my hair is to fine and then texture is kneel to none. My ends are straight and my roots are wavy, but the in between, is just that. I don't have anymore perm in my hair, and I've tried EVERYTHING, so I am looking for any suggestions as well. My hair is fine and thin but shoulder length and I don't want to use the creamy crank any more either! emoticon Thank you for your help and support!

I workout 6 days a week so str8ing my hair is pointless. I can go with a new braid out or a twist out for two days and then it goes into a puff or gets pinned up into some creatively styled updo (looks cute though) until I can wash, deep condition and style it again or detangle and remoisturize.

I'm currently sporting a short natural, but am seriously thinking about taking it as low as what will look good on me. My beautician thinks I can pull it off and I think it will be beautiful and no fuss no hassle, plus I think I'm sassy enough to rock it, LOL. emoticon

Thanks for the responses my beautiful ladies!!! emoticon My husband loves the curly look. I straightened it and he was like," I thought you were going to keep it natural." This is a plus!! I can't wait to try the twists and or braids! I am going to start my hair blog in the morning after I get all dolled up. I look a mess now after a long day!!

I've been thinking of wearing my hair naturally too! Normally I wear braids or wigs, but kind of want my hair to be free!

I heard it's a lot of upkeep though.

I have been natural for 8 years and have been wearing my own hair and styling it for the past 6. I find the best hairstyle for me working out is to wear my hair in twists. That way you can rinse it daily without taking out the style. I don't know what your hair texture is, but if your kinky coily like me (4b) than I would definitely recommend twists. Otherwise, if you have a more loose curl you can wash/wet & wear just like your doing now. Whatever is low maintenance is what I suggest.

I Love Carol's Daughter I use the Jada's line, my hair is curly and it hurts like heck but it looks so dry to me but when you touch it, it is not. I also use this virgin hair stuff my BFF got off the internet Oh My Word I had Thin hair and I had an bald spot from Father's side of the family (The women) . My hair is thicker than ever, my Barber was like Wow your hair is so thick now, everybody notice the difference I just use Carol's Daughter and that Virgin hair stuff.

My hair grows fast so I am thinking about cutting the rest of the perm out and just have a curly mini afro. RIght now if I blow it out, it is almost to my shoulders. I have tried a few different products, Carols Daughter. Panteen(sp) for women of color, another leave in conditioner with shea butter. The later one is helping the best with out drying it out. I am learning to embrace my curls emoticon Now if I could just find something to use to keep it moist enough so that I don't have to keep wetting it emoticon I think I may blog about it and take some before and after photos of the different products I am trying hmmm....

Good discusson. I have been natural for over a year, was wearing it really short, now letting it grow out some and i have a cabinet full of products. from your description my hair is completely opposite of your, i have probelms with dryness and tangling so i use leave in conditioner daily and mix and match other products LOL. It takes a while to find something that works, i am still searching.

I was looking into the Sister Locs , but I was told my hair was too fine. I am going to try some twists. It was cut in a bob before I started getting rid of the creamy crack!!! lol I am rocking that, just hate wetting it everyday to keep a decent look. I have never had any type of braids or twists so I guess I will try this next! Thanks for taking the time to respond! emoticon

I wear my hair in Locks so it easy. You my think about Sister Locs or Twist, and girl depending on your texture you could rock a afro that's hot.

Hope this is helpful, my Sis. Keep sweating emoticon

I just recently started wearing my hair natural. I am letting the perm grow out of my hair and I am in a weird phase. My hair is natural curly, but I like it straight. I recently started back going to the gym so taking the time to blow it out and press it is useless, I come out of the gym looking a hot mess!!! Does anyone have any tips to help me out. I have been washing/wetting my hair every day and putting a leave in conditioner in it. Please help emoticon
