Hi ...
I rejoined spark last week and also found this team for the first time ... kind of just doing a little exploring currently seeing if I can find my way around emoticon I haven't done much journalling ... only a little of it. It's strange - I know that it helps me when I do journal, and yet somehow I end up being scared to or putting it off. Need to find ways to get through that and let it be the help I believe it can be; so that's one reason for being here along with many others. Look forward to getting to know those here more

Sassy-

So glad you are able to be a little more active here. Its true in my friend list and in some groups I belong to there are a few Sassy names so I was confused for a minute lol.

Glad you can journal more and have a better day without fog. If you feel at ease please share about your journaling! I have started to work on Art type of journaling in conjunction with my regular journaling so I was thinking about posting with that idea in mind soon. I am going to try to post up once a week with Journaling ideas so members looking for ideas will be inspired and possibly post their ideas. Creativity is a really nice outlet to have in life!

Its getting into the 90's here now which I don't mind, 100 and up is the kicker for me honestly. I exercise outdoors so I am careful when 90 and above is going on. I walk in the early morning or later in the evening so the heat doesn't wear me out. I do think my allergies are under control now for the most part.

Stress seems to be the culprit in many health related issues, I control my stress level as much as I can so I am not getting worn down. I live with a few chronic conditions and sometimes the best that can be done is living with what you have. I am grateful to be alive, feeling grateful I can walk, talk and breathe without too many issues. I can see, hear, smell, taste, feel and enjoy being human more so than when I was younger so I smile about that. Prayer and meditation seem to help me a lot along with eating well and exercise.

I've had family members with gallstones and kidney stones so I know that can be quite a bit of pain. Surgery corrected gallstones for a few family members. Prevention is an ounce of cure in my thinking if at all possible. Glad the DGS's fiancée is fine with the baby until she can correct the issue.

This is my first BLC round, but with my strong organizational tendencies I pretty much flew through the round. We had challenges for the Weekend and Strength Training but otherwise our group was fairly self-directed in terms of not being too stringent about accountability standards. Some groups had much more drill sergeant mentality and I would have done poorly like that. I've always been self-directed so I didn't want a group that was too military like. I think the group I belonged to was perfect for my personality so I chose wisely. We will finish the 12 weeks next week and toward the end of May we'll begin BLC-28. The hardest part of my round was the TNT (strength training) but otherwise I had a lot of fun and support.

I'm glad members have enjoyed my postings on topics for journaling. I post the topics hoping someone can use the ideas for their projects or writing. April will be fun, just a few days away wow! Have a good week and good wishes for better health!

Myaka,

I am a Black Panther too. Isn't, it funny how those things happen.

Gaylinn- Hi Sis, I just could not stay away. I am now journaling again for my Lupus therapy so what better place to be but here.

I am so blessed to have my first day in three weeks without fog. It is so good to read again.

I will share what we are doing with my journaling if anyone is interested.

Myaka,

Hi. Your weather sounds pretty much like ours including the wind. I'm glad your allergies are better.

My Meniere's is off and on. Salt and stress seem to be the worst culprits causing the episodes. There is no cure so I just live with it.

DGS' financee now has gallstones. They are controlling the pain with diet until after the baby is born. Then she will need surgery. The baby is fine. She is due May 10 so she is getting close to a the time she will be fine if she is born early. If we all ate like DGS' financee has to eat for now, the weight would come off. She gets absolutely no fat which means mostly fruit and veggies.

I use to do BLC. They have good challenges. I was doing both BL and BLC until I started leading my BL team. My BLC team was losing their leader also and folded. We were the Crimson Butterflies. Your Panther Round is ending and mine is starting. We are in Week 2 of 10 weeks. I love that we are both Panthers. WooHoo!

We have another new member today.

Your journal topics seem to be very popular with members. Thank you for the great ideas.

Just do it no matter what!

Gaylinn-

How are you? Is your weather as lovely as mine is lately? We are sunny and mid-80's now. My allergies have calmed down thankfully, it was rough for a few weeks there! We do have a bit of wind but the pollen has abated enough where I don't have to take allergy pills that make me very sleepy.

I hope the DGS's fiancée is alright now, sending good vibes and prayers her way for good health moving forward. Are your symptoms with Meniere's better managed lately? I am doing pretty well, had a rough week this last week with the obvious female body. Anyhow, tomorrow is another start to a week and I am back on the horse. My favourite exercise is walking but I was hurting last week something fierce so I made the decision to beg off until the pain was over. I was a bit of a cranky arse but I am well.

I noticed on your page a panther, so we are both panthers in different ways! I am in a BLC Challenge but we have 3 weeks to go now. Not sure what I'll challenge myself with when we complete this round but I'll figure it out! Happy Weekend~

Kayah, thank you. The next thing that has happened is my DGS's finance who is 7 months pregnant was airlifted to Loma Linda University Hospital with a kidney blockage yesterday afternoon. The baby is fine and the kidney is getting belter but now her liver is enlarged. The baby is my son and DIL's first grandchild. More tests are being done today so we should have more info tomorrow. This new development did nothing to ease my Meniere's symptoms because of the additional stress.

We have another new member but her page is private. I sent her welcome by spark mail. She did post on the Wall.

Linndy-

Sorry to hear about Sassy and having Lupus. The Doctors thought I had that once so I know how serious it can be. No worries, we have it covered while you are recovering and coming back up to better health! I just posted the Journal Topics for March a bit ago. I misspelled Journal (Jornal) and was trying to figure out how to edit that misspelling in the Topic headline!
P.S. I figured it out, once in a purple moon I get ditsy for a little bit, all better now :)~

The wind last week and an early Spring is kicking my allergies up but that is spring in the desert for you! My allergy pill last week had me sleepy and groggy so I am avoiding taking those unless it is absolutely necessary. Don't worry about being negative since health challenges can have us annoyed with our bodies sometimes. I have my moments with my bad right knee or digestive issues also. You are right though looking for the positive will help our mental outlook.

Your DGD is heading to SA in July. That is so interesting to be able to make a difference in others lives. Having a dream such as this is so life changing and I wish and send for her good vibes. Two years may seem like a long while but it will go by in a flash for her I think.

Have a lovely fabulous Tuesday everyone!

thank you, Colleen.

It is a beautiful day in the desert despite the wind. Leaves are popping out on trees and bulbs are up and blooming. With all the rain we should have fields of poppies in the poppy reserve this spring. That is always a treat after a rainy year. So awe inspiring.

I have been whining to my journal about this Meniere's episode. Have to change my attitude and start looking on the positives in my life

My DGD has just been accepted into the Peace Corps in South Africa as soon as she gets her BA degree in May. She leaves July 1. This has been one of her dreams and she is totally excited. I may have influenced her decision to choose S A as I spent time there and love the country. We will surely miss her while she is there for two years.

Have a great day, everyone.

Hi, everyone. Along with the Meniere's episode which is getting better a bit each day, this has been an extremely busy time in getting my Biggest Loser Team set up for Spring.

Sassy220888 will not be taking an active part in leading Inner Journey for a long while. She has been diagnosed with a serious form of Lupus. I do not want responsibilities for our team to add to her stress level.

Have a great day, all.

You can get the book and follow along with us or just wait until we announce what the next part we are working with and do that.

I found a video that includes 2 of the tools we will be using.

http://juliacameronlive.com/basic-tools/

Right now we are using the Morning Pages. The fifth tool is the Artist Date. We will probably get to it around the middle to end of March since we are integrating one tool a week.

Created the new topic "The Writing Diet" in "To Slim Up, Write it Down" we can further discuss the book over there, thanks for the suggestion Colleen!

Any further discussion will take place in that venue so we don't totally clutter our discussion here!

MYAKAYAH ~ Since this is no longer "general" chatting, I think as a co-leader, you might want to move us to a new topic. I'll offer a suggestion of putting it under "TO SLIM UP, WRITE IT DOWN Forum" and maybe call the topic "Write Yourself Right Sized" or something similar and make it a sticky.

HAPPYMAMA and anyone else, please join us working through Julia Cameron's "The Writing Diet: Write Yourself Right-Sized". We are only 4 days into it --- perfect time to start!

I got my pages done this am... it was easier today than normal. I did it after putting in my contacts and it went fairly quickly. My mind kept working instead of doing it's normal going blank act.

HappyMama-The First Tool is Morning Pages from the book. "The Writing by Julia Cameron. Colleen and I are writing Morning Pages every day to get into regular practise with our writing. Cameron suggests using a stream-of-consciousness style and to write at least 3 pages in the morning usually. However, one should choose the best time of day that works. Each week we will move to the next Tool in the book. So Friday starts the Second Tool which is Journaling!

Update-I have done my Morning Pages today and I did a stream of consciousness on the Oscars all the way down to changing my schedule in terms of work. This was pretty easily done and I never lifted my pencil from the page once, even from hand cramp. I was not even disturbed by my cat wanting to go outside which is his favourite thing to do. Yesterday the Morning Pages were harder because I was a bit cranky, too much sleep. It's kind of funny because I've always felt like my writing is more profound with negative thoughts and feelings but not so with that. I was not pleased with what I wrote but every day isn't a Grand Slam.

It seems there is quite the difference between yesterday and today since Sunday sounded like a grump session and today was hearts, unicorns and roses :)~ There is a 180 in terms of tone with the 2 entries. It's interesting looking back in my writing and seeing what came to mind. I usually give a number to my mood every morning and it has been enlightening. I am seeing if the Morning Pages bring up any ideas for NaNoWriMo for later this year. I want to get another WIN since I have 2 finishes now!

Happy Monday and write~

I've done my Morning Pages every morning. I think its alright to do them whatever time you feel comfortable with. Some days can be a little brutal so you work it in when you can!

I'll post up that I completed Morning Pages every day as well. I do it but I don't always remember to post up here that I did so I will write myself a note to post up once a day to remind myself!

So next Friday, we can move onto the Second Tool in "The Writing Diet" then. Every Friday we can move onto the next tool. I'll make sure you make it through the Second Tool. (or at least give it my best shot) it has to come from deep down in you. You have to want to jump over your hurdles! We'll smash them together~

Hi HappyMama! Just let us know if you need any help, as with anything you get out what you put into something. There are many prompts and ideas here if you need them!

OK, I have my morning pages done for the 20th and the 22nd --- I *forgot* to do it yesterday. I can give a plethora or excuses, but none of them are enough to forgive the lapse of memory!

I'm doing the morning pages in my Journaling program (not online or public) and typing a minimum of 750 words each day. No, time of day isn't important, but I'm finding the later in the day I leave it for the more apt I am to forget it --- yesterday is a perfect example. Guess I need a check list where I have to check things I MUST do for the day or certain days and I can't go to bed unless they are checked off.

Where you want to do it is up to you --- I'm ok with anywhere. Although I will say that if we do it here, others may want to get the book and join us... or just follow along with us without the book. I say more the merrier. I think a day or day of the week to check-in would be good. Maybe a brief check in daily (as possible) would be good to keep us (...ok *ME*) on track and then when we go on to a different task we could have a more comprehensive update. I think we have one coming up on Friday (27th) to discuss and move on to the 2nd tool, yes?

Reviewing what the 2nd tool was, I now know why I rebelled and stopped reading the book. I trust with support, I will be able to get through and passed the 2nd tool!

Well, till next time...

Blessings,
Collien~~~

Colleen-

So let's work on Morning Pages for a week and see where we are at then. If you feel comfortable we can move on to the next Tool in the book. I think we can do either longhand or online. I think the idea is just to get into the groove with writing consistently without censoring ourselves, the idea is to have fun and learn along the way!

I don't think we need a specific time of day, whenever it is good for each of us on the day we want to move onto the next section in the book. We can ask questions or give thoughts and ideas from the chapters. If you would like we can continue to do this here or on our Spark Page, whatever is easiest or comfortable for you. (If you want to get together at a specific time we could arrange that though.)

We can check in each day and maybe give a quick description on how that session went!

Okay, I just saw your post from a little bit ago, good you did some work earlier. To form a new habit sometimes you just need a little nudge sometimes. You know like some people have workout partners to stay on track and accountable, its like that for us and we will have formed a new habit together! In my case, I will have more writing practise since I haven't practised everyday Morning Pages in over a year even if I do write a lot!

My writing pages were about 3 pages earlier and it was a fair amount of free writing. I considered I started out a bit slow and went into a very nice groove! I only quit to have breakfast and do some chores honestly!

Ok... with much kicking and screaming and avoidance, I got the first day's morning pages done! Now, let's see how tomorrow's goes. It's good to have support to keep me on track! I don't think I would have finished the pages today if I hadn't had to check in and report. Sad--- so sad, I'm not sure I like what that says about me. Best turn that around! Thanx for being there!!!

I would like to work with you. I've done morning pages before, but my consistency is less than admirable and I think working with you on a specific program would be a good thing.

My question was do we want to jump right in or do morning pages for a week and then go on to Cameron's next suggestion (and yes, I do have her book). When I do morning pages, it will be in a journaling program I have on the computer as I can't write long hand for any length of time without problems --- some times only long enough to sign my name a couple of times --- so I elect to computerize my writing. Not only do I do more, but I can *almost* keep up with my thinking. I know it's "supposed" to be long-hand, yet I don't have that choice. However you want to write is up to you. And I figured out it's 3 pages long-hand and 750 words on the computer... works for me!

So, Yes, morning pages (starting tomorrow?) and then at a time agreed on we will continue with her next step.

I write well, I just don't write consistently. I solved the problem with editing while I type. If I start editing I close my eyes and keep typing and if I keep peeking, I just turn off the screen so I can't see what I'm writing. I can usually manage the no editing part by just staring off into space.

I was going to say, sometimes I have nothing to say, but I actually think it's I have too much to say and can't find a starting place.

And we do have a paper to write on our impression of the religion we are reading about that week so, I'm already using that as an opportunity to write.

Blessings,
Collien~~~

Hello CEKER9~

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I received your email and it was slightly unclear. I wasn't certain what you were asking or saying when you said do we want to do Morning Pages for a week and then move onto what? Are you saying after a week you want to reevaluate and decide if you want to continue on? Let me know and we can move on to what you need. I have Cameron's book "The Writing Diet." Do you need me to write out suggestions from the reading??? Do we want to just practise writing long hand Morning Pages every day? Let me know what you are thinking here and we'll go from there!

It seems you are saying you are having issues putting words to paper. The words are in your subconscious but its difficult to get them on the screen or paper? Have you tried the freewriting Julia Cameron suggests? Maybe sit down to write and don't worry about doing 3 pages and perhaps set a timer for 5 minutes and just write whatever comes to mind and don't worry about creating the next great novel quite yet. When I take up a new activity or task I don't worry about the gems yet. You have to just jump in the pool and figure you way for a spell and figure out what works for you.

Just write and put anything down on the paper without stopping to even edit, even if its something like this paragraph here-

"I'm having trouble writing and I don't know what to say and yet I am looking out the window and its sunny but there is snow in the forecast later in the week so I'd better make sure I have warm clothes and a shovel and make sure my car is ready for the inclement weather. However, we may not get snow so I am praying for more sun and I wish I could go on a trip to Hawaii and sit on the beach in Honolulu drinking a Mai Tai. Yes, I am looking forward to taking a holiday before the summer starts for most people so it is not so crowded wherever I decide to take my trip and I want to set a goal to lose 1-2 pounds a week so I can fit into nice warm weather clothes when I take my trip and look hot so I can get a date or look good for my husband. I want to be able to learn to eat in proper portions and not overstuff myself. That reminds me I need to figure out what I am cooking for dinner tonight and I need to plan good tasty meals for the week...."

I just wrote that here now on the fly. I practise Freewriting at least 4 times a week and when you go back and look at what you wrote you can usually find the meat or pearls in your writing and expound upon those ideas if you feel like it. I think even the best writers have their moments when they feel like they write trash and its not worth the paper its printed on. I've read some journals of writers and they give insight on their different processes. We all have different ways of writing and getting the words down on paper. Sometimes the strangest things will give me ideas on writing. I listen to my favourite songs a good amount of the time and just write on that. Developing a good imagination and letting your mind wander is a good tool as well.

Being imperfectly perfect is a good middle ground to strive for in this instance. Does that make sense to you? A lot of times our best ideas come from our imperfections. Trying to be perfect takes unlearning because it hinders you from the work of writing since some days even for the best writers writing takes a lot of hard work and maybe you'll only come out with a sentence or two you deem decent enough to work with. Maybe start out with just a few words or sentences a day and don't worry about censuring your words, ideas or thoughts and when you can manage that move on from there!

Let me know what you are thinking or if anything I wrote helped you okay :)~ I'm here to help, nudge, encourage in this area! There are days I have a whole lot of trouble finding words but I work out the muscle of my mind those days with Free Writing, I look back on what I wrote and know I am channeling Ernest Hemingway lol. In "A Moveable Feast" he talks about some days only liking a sentence or two that he wrote...

In your World Religions class it is a good opportunity to practise your Free Writing even if you are answering specific questions from the course. I am from Southern California near Los Angeles but I live in Sin City presently which is close enough in my view! I've been through Oregon, I like it there from what I have seen of it but I prefer much more warmth and sun year round to live back in the Pacific Northwest again.

Hi all ---
I trust everyone is having a great day. I love the new Journaling Topics, Kayah, I would like to say that I do even a couple of them on a regular basis, yet that wouldn't be honest. I think about them and then when I get my computer fired up on a new screen, my mind is a blank as the screen (except for the prompt I've chosen to write on). I trust others are having an easier time at writing than I am --- think I want to be too perfect and am not giving myself permission to do "bad" writing. I want it to be meaningful and at least contain a pearl or two --- every time I write. I'm not asking for the moon or anything, huh!?

Kayah, the class is going well, except that it is requiring some writing and I'm having a brain freeze with that too! The information is primo and I'm learning a lot! And yes, I would like to do morning pages with you. Your info says you are from the west coast, California, where in California do you hale from --- it's a pretty big state! I live in Salem, Oregon --- a west coast gal too.

I'm needing to quit stalling and do my homework for World Religion class.

Hi everyone and welcome to our new members! In the Journaling Topics & Ideas Forum I posted up a new prompts today if you might need some new ideas for writing time.

I didn't realise I hadn't posted here in a bit but insomnia was hurting me pretty bad. I am good now since I work in the day now instead of overnight!

Colleen- Hope your class in World Religions continues to be fun & interesting. Any more owl attacks? Hopefully not! Hey Colleen, if you would like we can do morning pages together, just message me here and we can go through the chapters in the book together. It would be a useful exercise for me. To have a Spark Friend go through them with me would be motivating. If anyone else wants to join that would be cool as well.

Gaylinn-Hope you are feeling much better after the tooth issue! How have you been otherwise? Its sunny and warm here in Sin City, but its the Southwest so we are usually warmer than anywhere else. Its the desert so I suppose it is to be expected. I know what you are saying with the TV issues. A lot of time people aren't speaking clearly enough for me. It happens in real life as well though. I have a bit of hearing loss but not enough to concern me yet. I've had it since I was very young so I compensated in life. I don't need closed captioning quite yet though. I love poppies but don't see them much here.

MIAMIRN-Gaylinn had some good advice but prompts and ideas helped me when I was learning to write. In high school and University we did a lot of freewriting exercises and I expanded my writing skills. You just start writing whatever comes into your mind and don't censure yourself. A lot of time we write and edit ourselves while we write and that is not what freewriting is for. The best ideas come out of what we might consider not to be very interesting or worthy of exploration. It takes a little practise sometimes.

Hi. There are posts and links for journaling guidance scattered throughout the forums. I have done a whole long post on getting started, but I can't find it. One way is just to start writing. Don't edit just write. And we have oodles of topics going back to 2008. emoticon

I'm new. I don't journal very much, but would like to learn. I have a lot of stories to tell and would like some guidance. When I have some skills I would like to pass them on, too.

TODAYIHAVE ~ I have The Writing diet and was working on it. I couldn't get past the Morning Pages. I do them inconsistently. Maybe if we worked together, I'd be better at it. I seem to have no consistency with much of anything. That's a "life skill" I have yet to find the upside of it.

When you get your book, let's see if we can't make it through at least a few chapters.

Hi. I can't find where I introduced the Morning Pages either. But the 6 part challenge I mentioned was actually based on Cheryl Richardson's book. Here is a link to the first part. The other parts are scattered over pages 4, 5 and 6 in General Team Discussion Forum.

Have any of you done The Writing Diet? I think Gaylinn said she set up a thread for it on this team but I can't find it. My book is winging its way to me as we speak. I started journaling this week and am finding it really useful so far. Feel like I'm making progress all of a sudden instead of going round in circles!

4 foot wingspan? Ouch!... The price of fame! :-)

I think I'd rather be dive bombed by sea gulls. This owl, named Owlcapone, is huge and has a 4 foot wing span. I think it is a kick that the park where I walk is on national news! I am safe walking there though as the attacks are only at dawn and dusk and we walk in the middle of the day. They even have commemorative t-shirts made for the occasion. This has been fun! Our 15 minutes of fame!

We have the same problem here, only with seagulls. They attack anyone who comes near their nest when they've got chicks. They dive bomb people and peck their heads!

Gaylinn ~ sorry your gums are sore --- trust they have healed by now and you are back eating whatever you want.

Yes the owls have attacked 4 people and they have signs up all over. I'm safe because I avoid the park during dawn and dusk --- I'm more a middle of the day person!

You are probably better off not watching the junk they put on the tv and most movies. I need to cut back on my viewing!

Got the pads delivered and they are working well --- and little Luna was lovely! You will love having a great granddaughter... they are so precious!

Blessings and great journeys to all!

HI. My gum continues to heal slowly and the stitches are out. That whole extraction thing was an unexpected ordeal. I'm sure getting a tooth pulled is not supposed to be that hard.

Those owls must be fierce. I know that birds are very protective of their eggs and baby peeps. Even little cockatiels can be fierce.

I stopped watching TV and movies. The reason being an unusual hearing problem I developed. When people speak too fast and do not articulate, I can not distinguish between words. This can't be corrected like diminished hearing can with hearing aids. I don't even miss them anymore. I could go for closed caption but haven't bothered.

Colleen, doing those 24 ties sounds tedious. But what a victory getting all 6 pads completed. Delivering them will be the fun part. We are expecting a great granddaughter in May. The great thing is that DGS and fiancé live in town.

Poppies are coming up early in CA after our heavy Jan. rainy periods. We don't get them put farther south and on the coast some are blooming already. During good years the fields around the poppy reserve are solid orange and so beautiful.

To all Inner Journey members, have a great weekend.

Just do it no matter what!

Hi~

Been busy --- the best intentions don't get things done. I have been sewing, making crib bumpers for my great granddaughter. When I saw the pattern, I thought, this will be a snap and I'll be done with it in just a few --- yeah sure! It was simple enough, dead simple, but I made 24 ties from scratch which took many times longer than doing the whole rest of the 6 pads. I also had made it a bit more difficult by adding zippers. The instructions just had you sew the pad in permanently. If it got dirty, I guess spot cleaning was the only choice. In a baby bed??? I thought it would be best if the cover was removable and washable. Anyway they are done and delivery is tomorrow! Oh goody goody, I get to see the sweet thing!!!

I can't tell how many books I read in any more, but know that I used to read at least 3 books a week. Now, I have so many started and may finish 5 or so in a week, but in the next month none. Not because, I'm not reading, but because I am reading so many and never finishing them. I still have at least 10 or more books on my night stand that I read when I'm in the mood. Some, I never finish as they are "how-to books". I may read most of it, but never do read it all the way through. I consider those reference books.

Right now I'm taking a class in World Religions. Tonight (Thursday ---- yes I know it's Friday now being after midnight) I went to my first class and it's going to be *very* good, I'm really excited to be taking this class.

We had another owl attack --- up to 4 now. It's at dawn and dusk that it attacks. That means I have nothing to worry about as I use the park for walking mid day. They hope that when mating seasons ends at the end of next month they'll stop. We've made national news--- it's definitely odd enough. I've lived here in Salem for many many years and have walked in the park on a fairly regular basis for several years and to my knowledge the problem hasn't arisen before this.

Have a lovely day!

Blessings,
Collien~~~

Hi Gaylinn & Colleen~

Hope you are recovering from the molar extraction fine Gaylinn! I haven't had any teeth pulled since before I had braces when I was 11, I think it was. I recall that though and it takes a little time to recover from such a procedure.

I think you read more books than I do, I just renewed my library books for a third and final time. I had checked out 6 and I am on the last one. I've been a little sleep deprived so I am trying to get myself back in the swing of things. I just recalled now I forgot the prompts on the first but never fear I'm on top of it now :)~ I loved Thirteen Days in September, very good read! I'm not much for horror or fantasy myself but once in a while I'll try out Fantasy since I do like Science Fiction to a small degree. (Think Star Wars or Star Trek:TNG!)

We definitely have to have drought free plants here because you get fined for overwatering or going beyond your allotted water supply. If you wanted to buy bottled and care for your plants like that I'm sure they wouldn't mind it though. Perhaps catching overflow when you wait for the hot water to come on as well. Fresh tomatoes would be very nice to deal with indeed. Fresh is so much better than canned or even frozen!

Colleen-Owl attacks? I don't think I've ever heard of such a thing, that's a new one. Maybe the owls need privacy to do the mating ritual.

I used to live up above you in WA so I know January & February are usually the coldest months. I couldn't hack the cold anymore since if its below 80 I'm usually wearing a sweater. I'm not cut out for frigid weather. Oregon is pretty lovely though!

I don't eat out much because of the sodium levels in food and I have found servers don't always tell me the truth when I ask questions of the menu items I am considering. Plus I do my Sally Albright impression (When Harry Met Sally) by special ordering quite frequently!

I was just thinking about sleep issues. Any ideas on how to avoid insomnia in winter? I usually work the overnight shift and these past two weeks have been tough.

Also considering movies, any thoughts on new movie ideas they could make in Hollyweird? I was considering they haven't really made too many movies about older adults dating! I think Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton are in a movie coming out this year about this topic. I'm tired of remakes and very unappealing action movie franchises so Hollywood hasn't been getting too much money from me in the past 5-10 years!

Hi. Sorry to have been MIA. Had a molar extraction and have been suffering. Much better today.

I read a lot, at least 150 books a year. Right now I am reading Thirteen Days in September: Carter, Sadat and Begin at Camp David. And on kindle I have The Edge of Eternity going. I like historical novels, political history and biography and good literature. My least favorite genre is horror. I do not read Stephen King. And I am not much into Fantasy. I am studying essential oils and aroma therapy so have reading doing much reading on the subject this past year. I do enjoy spy and mystery genres. I have a few authors in those areas that I read to relax including Baldacci, Connelly, DeMille among others. One of the books I read in Jan. was Letter to My Daughter by Maya Angelou. I have read most of her books.

I live in the desert, too. We had two full days of rain in Jan. Most unusual occurrence out here. I am in CA. Most of my plants are drought free except for the garden. The wind blows a lot during Spring but the temps are grand. We have had a mild Winter and so far my kale has made it in good shape. Can hardly wait to plant the tomatoes and have fresh ones all summer.

The place where I walk is having trouble with owl attacks and they are warning people to not go there until after the mating season. Only in my walking space would this happen! Lovely! Guess I need to concentrate on rebounding (mini-trampoline) and going to the gym until the owls settle down. I've lived here for many decades and have never heard of this happening. Either I've had my head in the sand or this is something new!

Blessings,

I live in Salem Oregon and went for a walk today and we saw crocus coming up. So, I'm already seeing spring even though the coming month is our coldest and the one we are most apt to see snow. I like it when spring peaks out and each little thing that comes out one at a time until all of a sudden the flowers are all in bloom. I'm so happy to live in the valley where everything is green and growing all times of the year and with a few exception anything grows here. Although sometimes the weeds take over! I just laugh and say that a weed is just a flower out of place... it helps!

I am looking forward to spending more time outside. I missed my chance a few days ago when it was warm and sunny. Trust to catch it the next "ok" day.

I do have a favorite local restaurant, but don't generally go out to eat because I have so many food allergies.

Blessings,
Collien~~~

Did I crash this thread with my last prompt? emoticon emoticon emoticon

Anyhow, hope everyone is safe back east with the inclement weather, where I live the rain dancers must of heard our prayers since we have had 3-4 rain events this winter so far! Anybody reading anything interesting. I need to reserve more offerings at the library and today was a rest day from walking since I have done 6 days without a rest. I needed the rest and so did my feet. I had salad and spaghetti for dinner, had more salad than pasta.

Anyone looking forward to spring and its colours and flowers? I think I want to get some roses and see how they fare in my planter. Its the desert though so you have to be very careful with plants and flowers!

Do you have a favourite restaurant and meal?

What is your favourite genre of books and favourite writers, why? Least favourite?

I'm with Sheryl in that I read fluff on my Kindle a fair amount. I read so much technical and scholarly work in real life sometimes I need to read my fluffy offerings to rest the mind!

My favourite genres are Fiction, Non-Fiction, History and Spirituality. My favourite writers are Ernest Hemingway, Maya Angelou, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Mark Mathabane, Alex Haley, David McCullough, Ron Chernow!

I am trying to read more Fantasy type offerings but many authors have a dull writing style and that is the fastest way for me to put down a book. I can't read a trite or banal writer.

I don't like mystery or science that much for some odd reason. I avoid reading those types of books unless Dr. Richard Feynman wrote it. (Physicist)

A little bit of a change of pace here, write about these ideas, how do they interrelate or connect together?

My favorite genre of books is Fantasy because it stretches the imagination and gives it a real workout. The fantasy authors usually do great character studies too.

My favorite writers? WOW that is difficult, I have so many, although I think a couple of my favorites are Marion Zimmer Bradley and Mercedes Lackey. Although my favorites are far and wide.

My least favorite are poorly written books in any genre, but probably the romance are my very least favorite.

SHERYLP461 ~ Except for the herbalist books, your library sounds much like mine. I enjoy it to the max and love to reread many a book that was particularly good.

I love to read and it doesn't seem to matter what it is. My favorite Author is Robert A. Heinlein. I got acquainted with him in college. I am a herbalist so I have read many books on the subject I also own what I've read. I am also an astrologer ad own many books on this subject. I have shelves of books ok various religions and beliefs, I could go on and on. Before we downsized we had a full library, now only 6 book cases. Mostly reference books and a few others I couldn't bear to part with. I read what I call fluff on my Kindle

A question? What is your favourite strength training and cardio exercises and why?

I like to do Leslie Sansone for walking honestly. She works a girl out nicely and she isn't too peppy. I like outdoor walking more than this though definitely! I also like Zumba and Latin Dance practise, gets the heart pumping and the core working!

In terms of Strength Training I like Fitness Blender's videos. They have a variety and explain what you are to do properly. I do Yoga with a few sites but www.doyogawithme.com is a great one. Or you can go on YouTube and find a lot of beginning or advanced yoga in different styles.

I like interval training as well since it works out your core and flexibility~

A friend of mine has been really supportive of me with my recent marital problems. I know you say that is what friends are for but she has really gone above and beyond the call of duty . She never judges me or tells me to get over it. She listens without judgement. She always states her opinion in the most supportive way whether she thinks i am right or wrong. She doesnt take either side and when she felt like she needed to that she said I really think you should see a therapist because I can not be bias about this and it has to be your decision . I think that shows a lot of character in a person and it is about the nicest thing you can give to someone .

My absolute favorite cardio and strength are combined . I love HIIT ( High Intensity Interval training ) . I got introduced to it for real last year during a competition at my gym. For me it is the strength behind it . Pushing yourself to complete things at a high pace with a lot of force . The muscles tighten up and sweat drenches you like you have been in a sauna. I kept doing it on my own after the event ended. And although I have not lost much weight this year I am very strong and very much conditioned for my size .

A nice thing that a friend did for me and DH was offer her home for the 50th wedding anniversary party our children wanted to give us. They couldn't find a place they liked, so my friend who has a large home with a very large patio that overlooks the lights of our town offered her home. In addition, her sister came down from northern CA to create a potted plant garden on each side of her front entrance. They used mature plants and the effect was beautiful. The party was a lovely affair.

I like my crossfitter recumbent bike and chair exercise videos.

That is a good answer and one I debated about before deciding on my answer.

I love free weights, this allows you to be sure you are not depending too much on the machine and to go deeper into the exercise if you choose, I also prefer Yoga to anything else I have done, I actually feel it has made me stronger than lifting. They are good companion exercises. For cardio nothing beats walking

I can't think of a response to this question about the nicest thing a friend has done for me!

The best answer I can think of is when a friend listens, really listens and doesn't offer solutions to a venting session.

A question? What is your favourite strength training and cardio exercises and why?

I see you all agree this is a tough question... I have great friends and they all have done things for me that were so wonderful. It is so hard to choose, especially if you weigh into it the effort it cost them to do it. I would have to say it was when my son shared a treat with me that he had been wanting for a long long time. Now I realize he is family, but he is mt friend too

I definitely would choose being smarter! I'm an introvert so my first question is why would I want to be more popular... I would just have to deal with more people!!! Besides choosing being smarter would lead to more reading and more classes and wow! what fun are those!!!

Nice Kaya, I read the question a little differently. I think we are all leaving out the why part of the questions.

I too would choose becoming smarter. I have always enjoyed learning and research. It gives me satisfaction to know I am capable of understanding different puzzles that are a part of learning. I believe friendships are boosted with knowledge, When a child think of how you played with other children. Playing was learning; learning together formed a bond between you that in my case is still strong today between 5 of us. I know I have made many friends while learning,

If you could choose to between becoming smarter or more popular, which would you choose and why?

I care nothing about being more popular, it would mean I would have to speak more, no thanks! I prefer becoming more intelligent by a landslide. I like it this way!

Do you have a specific talent or hobby from when you were young that has enriched your life? Have you pursued it as a career? Do you earn extra money from it? Have you picked up any new hobbies or interests as an adult?

Oh, geez I came up with a whopper here. I read a lot when I was young. I wrote a lot, listened to music, watched sports and other TV. I cooked and baked, played outside a fair amount. I am an Accountant, Medical Biller and Transcriptionist, computer geek and cake decorator! I make money decorating cakes, doing computer work for people who mess up their computers and I am a personal organizer.

Interests as an adult? Sports, Music (I play the violin and piano) Blogging, Cake design and decorating, Dancing, Various forms of exercise, reading, writing, traveling, cooking, Hiking...

When I was a child I loved to read, I grew up in a neighborhood where children were out the door playing and only came in on purpose, so the only crafty type thing I did was learn to sew.

As an adult my crafty bit was scrapbooking I enjoy putting the albums together. Still read. I also enjoy plann9ing events, but not for a profit, but for not for profits. I am a board member on 5 non profits and hold various offices but always requested to plan and implement the event
Back to what is yhe one thing you could do for your city. How can you help make these things happen? I am sending the video of this village to our county and city officials, I will request time to speak. If this doesn't work I will request that our Slow Food Organization be allowed to do it.

I have given a lot of thought to what I would like to have happen in my town. My decision is that the streets need major work and soon. The surface material needs to be one that does not soften in severe heat. The temp is high is summer and the finish on streets softens and ruts are made as vehicles travel them. Then winter temps are cold and the ruts freeze in place. We passed a bond issue for street repair, but surfaces they are using have not changed. The street in front of my home is no longer a washboard since it was resurfaced during Fall, but come summer the whole destructive process will start all over.

The idea of community gardens is great. It won't work for us right now because of the CA drought and the amount of water it takes to raise veggies in the desert. But it is something to keep in mind.

Just do it no matter what!

I am going to work on your's tomorrow, Spent most of the day trying to see if I did damage ti the surgery on my arm. Lucky for me not, but is painful. You should start with Stranger in a strange land. I don't know when you went to college, but this was the book to read. then follow from there, although Time enough for love is a stand alone, I enjoyed seeing some of the same characters in both books.

Is there a specific piece of jewelry you always wear? (Besides wedding rings, but you can list that one) Is there a special significance to it?

I have a Hawaiian bracelet that I had designed before I left Hawaii, it has my Hawaiian name engraved into it. I think if Paolo and I go there this summer I am going to get another in a different style. I also have a necklace I am always wearing, it is a gold heart toggle necklace Paolo gave to me on the first anniversary we were together. I always wear my engagement and wedding rings, unless they are being cleaned or repaired.

Sheryl, good idea about a public garden and being able to take what you need. Many places have food deserts where all you can find is fast food or convenience stores. Appalling really.
It wasn't too hard to list 10 Ways I Show Love, round #8 I had to dig deeper to figure the last 2 out though. I am going to see if my library carries the Robert Heinlein book you mentioned sounds like a good read!

I wear my grandmother's plain gold wedding band. I was always very close to her, and when she died, I asked if I could have the ring. I was told that it would go to the oldest granddaughter. But my aunt said she wanted the ring and saved it for me. Since she gave it to me, I have worn it everyday except when I travel. Then it goes into the safety deposit box. I had no idea that my aunt had saved it for me until she presented it to me during one of my visits.

Just do it no matter what!

Great list, they only overlap mine in a few places. I shows how diverse people are and how hard it is to fins romantic love.
Love your answers as to how to improve your city. My town has large pockets of food deserts, people who live in them are mostly underprivileged and a lot of them no transportation back and forth to a grocery store, so they ear out of convenience and spend too much money on items with little or no nutritional value.
There is a town I believe in England that plants all available public land as a vegetable garden. there are tomatoes in the police yard, radishes around the lamp posts and so on. It is there for anyone to pick that needs it. Isn't that a better use for the money used to plant hedges or the water used to keep them growing? This is what I want for my home town.

A topic to share? Is there a specific piece of jewelry you always wear? (Besides wedding rings, but you can list that one) Is there a special significance to it?

The one thing I would like to do to improve the city I live in?

Oh, let me list 2, they relate to one another! The first is to put in more sidewalks because apparently there are too many people here who drive with cell phones in their ear or they are drunk. They are on the news every night just about because they have hit somebody!
The second thing is more police, or increased police presence and maybe we can cut down on speeders and people who are driving with cell phones in their ears.

10 Ways to Show Love? (I'm going to assume this is for my SO)

1. Make him his coffee and breakfast before he heads off to work in the morning.
2. Initiate conversation that leads to the closeness he craves.
3. Let him know when I need help getting heavy things down from shelves.
4. Let him distress for an hour when he comes home from work most days.
5. Watch soccer with him sometimes, listen to Italian music, spending active time together!
6. Let him surprise me once a month with plans, since I don't care to be surprised much!
7. Make his favourite meals on Friday evenings!
8. Basically I compliment his appearance, accent, the way he loves his children, how he is a take charge type, how manly he is. I think he feels like Superman, Batman and Blade lol!
9. Basically show my affection physically to him so he knows I care! (kissing, hugging)
10. I share my secrets with him, he needs to know I trust him. So he likes to know the mystery about me that I don't share with anyone else!

Linndy, Yeah right now isn't the greatest time to be visiting the Middle East or the Former Soviet Block countries. I wouldn't do it myself today but a few years back before I married my SO I traveled for a long spell through the Middle East and Russia! I am pretty adventurous so what may scare most people off I'm ready for. Plus I don't scream I am an American by my dress or demeanor so I have been told.

I seemed to avoid Israel so the countries I visited didn't really give me a whole lot of scrutiny visiting. I was just there as a History buff and wanting to visit the people and see the sites. I met a lot of nice people. A good majority thought I was Irish or Scottish since I look like a Ginger. I had a marriage proposal in Jordan lol, I don't even want to recall that moment, he was serious and we just met.

I've never been to China even though I think it would be an interesting visit. I need to hit Canada and Australia though. I've met many Australians living in Hawaii and their English is confusing sometimes! I'm trying to stay in the States for a while now. I think the SO and I are doing Hawaii this summer round May and maybe hit Australia after since we have a 3 week break again! We'll see~
