Mammo results came back. They found something so I have to go back for a follow up. I can honestly tell you I am a bit freaked out. I really wish my mom was here. Funny my dad called earlier and as he was hanging up, he paused and said, "Call me if you need me." Of course as soon as he hung up the tears started. It will be a long weekend.

Yeah, I'm glad we will have a few days to get back on schedule. Unfortunately Labor Day weekend will be another juggle. Oh well.

I wish I could sleep better now. I find myself awake longer and waking earlier than I want to. I hope that changes before school starts for Abby. Nothing like having a cranky, moody kid at school.

Yeah. She is not sleeping enough on this vacation that is for certain. Very moody and cranky sometimes.

My daughter was and still is the opposite. She could take a 4 hour power nap and still sleep in.

Hope you are enjoying the vacation!

Abby slept until after 8am today. I thought that would change today's plans but I guess not by much. Aaron and I won't complain I guess.

I was up early today too. I hope to get to bed on time tonight or I will struggle with sitting through another day of PD tomorrow. It is funny how we are asked to sit for hours listening to people talk about a new way of teaching, but we would NEVER want to do this to our students.

It's funny, but I didn't shop this weekend either. I thought we were going to buy a washer and dryer, but my husband is convinced that the stores raise the prices for the tax-free weekend.

I'm happy to hear that you got the list before school started! I know many parents don't until after school starts and it is hard to miss out on the sales now. The project sounds fun.

Amherst is pretty good. I've seen other fires happen and it seems like the kids were well taken care of.

Meanwhile we got an email from Abby's 3rd grade teacher. Guess I have some supplies to get after all. The basics are covered but they need to bring in flour, salt, and a few other things. Some project they will be doing during week 2 making a 3D map of New England.

I read something in a local newspaper that said multiple agencies are providing a coordinated efforts to help the victims. About 1/2 of the apartments were being rented to people affiliated with Umass either as students, faculty, grad students etc... and UMass is among the organizations helping out. The director of LSSE never got back to me but I'm not going to worry about it at this point. Sounds like people are helping those that need it.

Yes I guess so. I also think the landlord/management helped a bit too. I thought about driving by the neighborhood on Tuesday but didn't do it.

That seems unfortunate that the camp director wasn't aware of the fire. Hopefully the absences were not all displaced families.

Latest I heard was there were only 8 kids affected. I didn't hear back from LSSE director. I talked to camp director yesterday and she didn't even know about the fire, but did say there had been some absences and the kids were from Southpoint so it could be related. I am hoping she will tell me more this afternoon. She said she was going to look into it.

Let me know if I can collect or donate. I always think fire is the most severe tragedy of all. I am really glad everyone got out! I know I saw on the news that one neighbor had taken in two girls who were affected. It is great that the landlord is proactive as well.

You've probably seen the news by now. It was a very serious fire. 36 families are displaced. Luckily it was during the day and everyone was able to evacuate. No fatalities. (I haven't heard about any pet deaths.) We're talking about at least 100 people made homeless, many of them children.

I fear at least some of them were probably Abby's campmates. I know the camp bus goes to that neighborhood and while it is a very large apartment complex odds are someone she knows was affected, is being affected by this tragedy.

I think Red Cross and the landlords are spearheading the aid coordination. Some will be housed in empty units, others might have to go to hotels. I don't know. If I hear of a way to give before the end of the week I will do something.

I hope it wasn't too serious a fire!

We went to the CT shore yesterday for a birthday party. Unfortunately even though we were within a minute walk to the beach, we didn't go for long. Hopefully I will get to the beach for a day in the near future. I need some time to just watch the waves.

There was a big fire in Southpoint apartments in South Amherst yesterday. I am wondering if some of my daughter's campmates were displaced by the fire. I am pretty sure that is a neighborhood where kids live. :-( Guess I won't know until Monday.

That is awesome that it changed for the better for Abby and for the girl! When my daughter was in high school she had a bully. I spoke to the teacher in November and it didn't get better. I ended up going to the school for a meeting with the teacher, guidance, and the head of the English dept. By then the girl had graduated and there was little that could be done. I went because I felt the teacher ignored my daughter's needs and allowed the bullying. The teacher ended up leaving the school before the next year started. I am not sure if the meeting is why, but I am sure she was reprimanded for allowing bullying. People have no idea how harmful words are.

Abby had a girl at camp who was her "bully". It went on for weeks. I felt really powerless because I didn't even know who it was. Abby never gave me a name. Then one day I asked Abby as I was picking her up if the girl was in the room. She pointed her out to me. She and I quietly had a chat with a couple of the counselors, and they promised to follow-up with the child the next day. Now a week or two later the two girls are playing together (usually with a 3rd girl involved). So kids can change. I am not sure what was done or said. Maybe the kid didn't realize how badly her words and actions were affecting Abby until it was brought up to her. I wish Abby had spoken up sooner but I'm glad it's cleared up for now. It's made me feel more positive toward the camp.

Years ago when my cousin announced she wanted to have a baby, I just about lost my mind. I had never expressed my opinions to family before, but just could not hold my tongue that day. I stated that she didn't have a maternal bone in her body and should get a dog if she wanted to mother something. The following week she got a dog and that weekend they went away, leaving the dog locked in the bathroom with food, water, and newspaper. It made my point exactly! Now she has a 10 year old son and her parenting has been questioned repeatedly. She had a state grant because he has autism, and the agency removed the grant until she agreed to parenting classes. She refused, stating she is a good parent. Her husband left her too. We all hope he will fight for custody. It might give the boy a chance at a better life.

Isn't there a saying about those who shouldn't have kids usually have more kids than those who can take care of them? I consider my husband and I to be good parents but we only have 1 kid. Meanwhile someone else will have 5 kids from multiple partners and not hold a job and etc. On the other hand there are some great stay-at-home parents too. Not knocking them all.

So many people have kids and cannot meet their children's needs. Hell, they cannot meet their own needs. It is frustrating to see how people do not care for their kids and continue to have more and more. I hope the 4 kids get cared for as they need to be.

I guess there were 5 kids and 2 of them were disabled. Mom took care of 1 on the 2nd floor and dad took care of the other on the 3rd floor. I don't know who took care of the other 3.

Yes I work with some oblivious people too.

Oh that's gross Janine.

Did you hear the story about the family with the disabled kids? One of them died and the husband didn't know how to tell the wife. She finally said "What's that smell?" And he told her? Now the other kids are all in foster care while the officials decide what to do to them. Crazy.

My husband sat with dog poop in the same room for 2 days. I could smell it, but never found it and I didn't go in the living room because I figured he would find it if it was in there. I found it by accident. It frustrates me how he doesn't see things! The poop was just the most recent.

I am the same way about the tv. I don't watch it and don't pay much attention and then I'll look at it when I'm busy with something else and think "Oh I should dust that later..." and meanwhile the people who watch dvds on it never seem to notice.

I have a few things I need to do that I have put off far too long. I really need to give the first floor a good cleaning. The living room is so dusty. It's hard because I don't go in there that often so I don't think about it until I do go in there. Then I am amazed that anyone can watch tv in there without wanting to clean.

Nothing really set yet. I know I need to spend some time on my house. I might head to the beach for a day next week. We will have to see how it goes. I have work on this upcoming event in September I have to get going on. That might take up a bit of my time.

It is! I have 32 people on staff. Not having 5 of them we feel it. I had to juggle students and staff from other rooms around because of it. Thankfully we were down 9 students so that helped.

Last day of the program today. Let's see who shows. I know I have 2 not in. We'll see what else happens.

Field day was good, although some of the teachers didn't bother to go out with their kids and that upset the gym teachers. Today I have 5 staff out, several were late, and one went home sick. Another staff got scratched by a student and is mad about it. He doesn't realize this is part of the job working with kids with developmental delays. It has just been one of those days.

Yeah I am seeing a specialist today. Luckily it's on campus so it's convenient, but bleh... also I'm not feeling great. Might be coming down with another cold.

Have fun with field day. Hope you have good weather, not too hot and not rainy.

Good luck today with the drs. I know that causes you stress, especially it being a new dr.

Today is field day at work. That means a lot more movement for my students and for me. I have to be outside most of it, but have some paperwork to get done as well.

I always get nervous when we go places out of our routine because she is a picky eater and I can't always guess what she will be willing to eat. I do keep fruit snacks in the car but we stayed at OSV longer than I thought we would and I wasn't prepared for that.

I am getting excited for the weekend but I need to get through Wednesday first. I have a doctor's appointment in the morning that I am dreading, and then in the afternoon Abby has an appointment and then a library thing. We won't get home until around 7:30pm or 8pm. It's going to be a long stressful day for me. Once I get through it I will be much better I think.

Abby sounds like me. I am a bear when I don't eat. People haven't figured that out yet. I try to remember to bring snacks with me, but don't always remember.

I am liking the tattoo more and more. I probably should have put it somewhere it would be easier to hide, but what's done is done. I did order a cuff and sleeves to keep on hand in the event I need to hide it. But I think it is tasteful and has meaning for me.

Saw a picture of the tattoo. Nice job. At first I thought it was a Disney reference because I have seen the "Believe" used by Disney addicts too, and then I saw the ribbon.

It was pouring rain when we were driving to Sturbridge and in Belchertown or Three Rivers I pulled over and said "this is nuts!" but my husband said "relax it will get better" so we kept going. It was still pouring when we got there but it let up and eventually stopped raining. Was actually very hot and humid for a while. We skipped lunch and Abby had a meltdown when it was time to get food when we left. We were screaming at each other in a Wendy's parking lot. Ended up driving up to Holyoke and going to Red Robin. I had my sunglasses on when we went inside and while we were eating it poured like mad with thunder and lightening again. We took our time eating and by the time we left it had let up quite a bit.

Abby's mood turned around a lot once she had some french fries in her. She was really starving I guess. She's miserable when she's hungry. We did have a snack at OSV (milk and a cookie and and another drink for her) so it's not like she hadn't eaten but ...

Did not get the grocery shopping done. Will have to do that today.

Sometimes throwing a teddy bear is safer than letting the anger and frustration take over. I know.

Glad you had a nice time at Six Flags. I ended up getting a new tattoo at a fundraiser for Dana Farber. It was good. I have a bit of remorse for placing it on my inner forearm, but long sleeves will cover it. It will be a nice reminder of why I put so much of myself into my work for the American Cancer Society.

I think we have all calmed down from the fight. My husband waited until yesterday to tell me how mad he was at me and how I reacted. Gave me a bit of a warning. I had thrown a teddy bear, not at anyone just against a wall, but he was really angry that I threw something. Didn't matter how soft and cuddly it was. He was really, really mad at me for throwing stuff.

Anyway Abby and I did Six Flags and we did it her way. I didn't try to push anything. We just drifted from one thing to the next. I did tell her when we were getting close to Magic Show time and we made it to that, but we ended up leaving because she was scared by some of the tricks he did. We spent a lot of time in the water park as I knew we would and we didn't eat much. I tracked more steps on my FitBit than I ever had before. We got home very late but she was still up at 6am this morning.

I know it's going to rain but it's my last chance to see the Field of Flags so I am determined to go. Hubby is going to go with us and we will hopefully do grocery shopping on the way home. If not then I'll have to do it tomorrow after work.

I hope you are able to get her to see that words against you hurt just as much as words at her. My daughter and I have fought for years over this. There was a time she would verbally attack me whenever we disagreed. For many years I took it. One day, I just couldn't anymore and told her so. It actually stopped the attacks for a while. Now, years later they still surface at times. I tell her as calmly as I can that I do not appreciate her saying these things to me (much worse than "lousy mother" in my eyes, but that one would bother me too). She doesn't seem to see my point. Be mad I tell her. Swear I tell her. But don't swear at me such horrible names. I even used this story I heard one time about a father who convinced his son every time he wanted to swear at him, he should drill a hole in their fence. After a while, he took the son to look at the fence and stated that even though the holes had stopped being drilled for a while, the other holes remained. I definitely have not been a perfect mother to my kids, but I think I did well with them.

I think I can honestly say I will never get a tattoo. Good luck to you!

The plus side of the reunions is that I have added 2 new friends to my Facebook. One, Cory, requested me before the reunion and I had no idea who she was. Even at the reunion I didn't really spend much time with her but afterward I figured it out and accepted her request. For my dad's reunion there was a young woman taking photos. I gave her my email address so she could send copies to me. She only sent me the ones of Abby and me which was fine. Anyway I didn't know her name at the reunion even though I talked to her a bit. After a few emails I looked her up on Facebook and she accepted my friend request. So there is some positive there.

Taking Abby to Six Flags as you know and it will be crazy.

Also we had a fight last night and it gave me something to think about. She called me a "lousy mother" and I went off on her dropping a few F-bombs along the way. Then I asked her WHY she would say that and she gave me a very honest answer. "Other kids pick on me at camp. I wanted to see what would happen if I picked on you." Well.... so I told her that I get called a "lousy mother" all the time by people who think I do too much for her, but I know I am NOT a lousy mother and it breaks my heart when she says it. We both calmed down before we went to sleep. I think we will have a discussion about sticking up for yourself. Obviously the camp counselors are not supervising the kids in the bathroom and whatever and the girls are being mean to her. She's tried to be nice and keep her mouth shut but it's killing her inside to be treated that way. I'm going to tell her to stick up for herself. If she gets sent to the office it's still worth it. As long as she uses her voice and not her body. This has been her worst summer at camp so far. I don't know if there is time to change that around, but we can try.

Sorry about the reunion. I have a distant cousin of my mom that doesn't have a clue who I am and I always have to tell him. I walked past him in Costco two days ago and he didn't register anything.

I am heading to Northampton today to take my niece and nephew to a play at Smith College. Then we will eat and have an adventure. I might end up at the mall with them. Lots of steps for me today!

Tomorrow I am getting a new tattoo. It is a fundraiser for Dana Farber and I am excited to do it. I still have to decide which one of the 5 I want to get. That is the hardest part.

That is a lot of people. My dad is the youngest of 4, and his 3 brothers are all half-brothers so with his father he was actually an only child. My mom is the youngest of 2. So not big there. It's when you go up a generation that it gets bigger. 2 of my dad's brothers had 5 kids a piece, but only one set of those kids shows up for the reunions. The other set I never see.

Bleh.. that's too much.

I have a very large family. My mom was the oldest of 6. Her father was 1 of 5. Throw in all the kids and that is a lot of people.

I remember as a kid our reunions used to have hundreds of people. After my great-grandparents died, it became less attended. Now we see the attendance increase some.

If there are kids involved then I could see your former sister-in-law coming but otherwise she needs to move on with her life. That is odd.

The reunion would have been better if my mom, uncle, or my brother was there. Since it's my maternal grandmother's family and she has passed away we didn't have anyone close to us to hang out with. No one from her side of things except us showed up. Oh well. I hear there is another one in 2 years. Maybe that will be better. At least it was local so it was easy enough to bail out and go do something else, although it did suck that we missed Fire & Ice day at Old Sturbridge Village (I didn't even tell Abby about that one.).

Sorry it wasn't all you had hoped for. Our reunions have become hit or miss as well. There are some that will be there no matter what, but many more that don't show. My kids have not attended as much over the years. One person I don't agree with attending is my former sister-in-law. I dislike that she comes and even worse that she brings her husband (now on number 3!). I don't feel she should as she divorced my brother and no longer is family in my eyes. Not many agree with me, but I always find it disturbing.

My brother was a no show at the reunion which was really disappointing. We stayed about 2 hours and bailed. We really didn't have anyone to hang with since my mom and uncle weren't there.

Have fun at the reunion! Ours is always in August and it too is near my house. I don't walk, although I could, because of all that we have to bring. Last year I put up a poster and had people brag about what happened in their life over the past year. I hope to do that again. People really liked that.

Abby's camp had a multicultural festival yesterday. After it was over I took her swimming at the pool in Amherst. I was hoping her friend from last week would be there but no such luck. Today is family reunion on my mom's side. It's not far from my house at all. I can just cut through the woods to get there.

We had a good time and I tracked a lot of steps which I was happy about. The other mom has a girl Abby's age, and then a boy a couple years younger and a 19 month old girl. The boy wasn't too thrilled that he didn't have anyone to play with and was a bit grumpy but the girls had a good time. The grill closed at 6pm so I was glad we thought to eat at 5:30pm. The train ride also closed at 6pm unfortunately so we we didn't get to ride. Maybe I'll take Abby back there on my own. She wanted more time on the splash pad but the boy wanted playground time and we had to keep things even as well as we could. Oh well. We will try to see them again in August, maybe at OSV.

It was good. She's not an author I typically read, but the crowd loved her. My daughter is excited for the book. It was warm inside the theater though, but I was happy to go.

Enjoy Look Park today! It is supposed to be a very nice day weather-wise.

How was it Janine?

We went to our local library last night for part of the summer kid's program. It's a 3 part project. Last night they painted their volcanos. Next time (in 2 weeks) they will try to make them explode. Abby's not sure she wants to explode hers. It's too pretty. Oh well.

Taking her to Look Park tonight to see a friend. It's a busy week.

It's funny I am not as active today at work. I don't feel like I am sitting more, but apparently I am. I am hoping to head to Mount Holyoke College tonight to hear an author speak. My daughter likes her and I would like to get her new book signed.

Abby's been wanting a play date with a girl from CT. I met her mom online through a message board for parents. We met once at Look Park a few years ago. Back then there were only 2 kids in the family, now there are 3. Anyway they house-sit once a year somewhere near Northampton so this is the week for it, so we are planning for after camp on Thursday. I did see on Wednesday there is a free concert (Roger Saloom band or something) but Abby has her library thing that night.

I love going to Look Park. It is such a beautiful park. I often go to Stanley Park in Westfield, but Look Park is my go to place when I want to get away. I hope the rain is gone by then for you.

Second half starts today for my daughter. She had 2 weeks with 1 teacher and now she's got 2 weeks with a different teacher. First teacher called out twice (doggie died & professional development class) so she's only got 6 sessions so far. This new teacher offered to do Fridays for the next 2 weeks which would offset the 2 days that the other teacher canceled but I don't know if we'll do them or not. I'm not the one who has to bring her so it's out of my hands.

Yes this rain is a bit of a bummer for summer camp/school stuff. We have a play date scheduled at Look Park on Thursday. I hope the rain is gone by then.

Back to work today. After tomorrow, we will be half way over with the summer program. I am worried about the storm later as it is difficult to put kids on buses in wheelchairs in the rain. We always manage though.

Greggory's might have the minis. Henion in Amherst might be another option. Someone does minis. I know because I've seen them at retirement parties.

Henion also does gluten-free, and other stuff. They did dairy-free for a kid's birthday party that we went to.

Good luck!

I was hoping to hit Greggory's today. My niece has decided she wants mini cupcakes so that might be out of the question. She fell in love with a cake at a shop in East Longmeadow that I may order and then get minis some place else. I am waiting to hear from a friend who bakes on the side as to whether she can tackle the cupcakes. Otherwise I will get them from a shop in Westfield.

Did you go to Greggory's in Hadley for the cupcakes? They are really good and well-known. Or where did you go?

I posted elsewhere- I caught up to my daughter's camp at Laurel Lake in Erving but it was too crowded for my taste so we ended up at Lake Wyola. The concession stand was still open when we arrived so I bought Abby a popsicle and she was very happy. We stayed for about 3 hours I think. Nice afternoon.
