PTO is hurting this year for leadership. I feel badly for them but don't want to step up either. Oh well. I am good about donating money, food, materials but terrible about donating time.

That seems fair to set it up that way, but a long night for everyone if you have multiple grade students. Glad it went well.

Ours was 6-6:30pm for pre-K, 6:30-7 for K-3, 7-7:30 all in the gym for principal & all school stuff, and 7:30-8 for 4-6 grades. It could be that some parents were in K-2 instead of in grade 3. I know some parents were hitting grade 3 and then grade 5/6. The schedule is set up so that if you have an older and a younger child you can hit both classrooms. Although if you have 3 kids you're going to have to miss something. I know one parent wasn't in the classroom because she is a teacher of another class, and presumably her husband was home with the kids. Oh well. It's over and done.

That seems like a pretty good turn out for open house. I almost never get a parent to show and this year with it being 4-5:30 I would almost guarantee it. My students take the bus home so they would have to either have me keep their child, arrange for someone else to be at the house, or wait for the bus and then drive back to the school.

I think out of a class of 20 kids, 12 or 13 of their parents showed up. A couple of kids had both parents there while most of us had one parent stay home and the other attend. Kids are not invited to these open houses. The teacher we have this year is def one who leaves at 3:30pm if not sooner. She has a 3 year old son and I see him being dropped off at the school when the buses leave so I know she is busy. We signed up for parent/teacher conferences in November and all of the time slots were from 1-3, 20 minutes each. (The kids get halfdays on Wednesdays anyway and then the school adds 2 more half days to the schedule to fit in the conferences so she is basically just following what the school requires with no extra.). I signed up for a 3pm slot so that my husband and I would miss as little work time as possible.

I was hoping another parent I know would scope out the support group since she wasn't going to open house, but I emailed her and she didn't end up going. I don't know if I will or not. The meetings are all in other towns and the timing is tight. I'd have to have my husband get out of work early or meet me somewhere so I could get to them on time. However they are only once/month and they skip some months (like December & April) presumably because vacations and stuff make it too crazy.

I hope you find the group helpful. I know I have had mixed dealings with support groups for special needs kids. One was really just a gripe session about the school and the administration. I don't need anyone to help me find fault with others. I am pretty good at that myself thanks. It is sad that they scheduled the meeting on the same night as open house though. Hope it went well with meeting the teacher!

Oh yes, I see them leaving around 3:28, you are right about that! That's about when I am showing up to pick up Abby. I don't see many in the parking lot at 4 if I show up late for some reason.

Tonight there is a monthly support group starting for parents with special needs children. "Special needs" is pretty loosely defined in this case and I am considering going in the future. However it is also Open House night at our school and I am going to that instead. The support group covers 4 area schools and I guess they didn't realize that tonight was open house for us. I sent a message to one of the organizers but there is nothing to be done I guess.

Sad but true. Don't stand in our parking lot at 3:28 any afternoon because you are likely to get run over by the mass of teachers who book out at the end of the day. I understand many have kids to get to, but just as many don't. I've been known to leave quickly every now and then, but on the whole I stay until about 4:00 most days. It's a great time to get things done.

I think people don't think of the investment in themselves as a good one. I buy things for my classroom, attend trainings, and do whatever research I can because it is an investment in my students and myself. So many teachers wouldn't dream of doing this on their own time. Sad!

When Aaron was younger he went to a company he wanted to work for and said "If you train me I will work for free". Kind of like an internship but without the college behind it. Maybe you could call it an apprenticeship. I guess that would be the right term. Anyway he lived off his credit card for 6 months or a year and got the training and experience so that he was hireable. It was a pretty good move on his part I think. I don't think many people would think to do that.

As far as Big E traffic goes, we dodged pretty well once we got out of the gate area. We could have dodged more going in but we didn't realize it would be so bad. We sat on Memorial Bridge for 20 minutes or so going in. Coming back we went a different way and didn't hit I-91 at all until we got back up to Exit 13/Riverdale Road.

I have a good friend who is a computer whiz. He works in the warehouse at Hood, but they have discovered his tech skills and currently have him on "special assignment" doing all kinds of tech stuff for the company. He never went to college, but they have sent him for trainings. He is hoping this becomes a permanent assignment, but as of now he is scheduled to go back into the warehouse in January.

Glad Aaron is getting recognized for his work with the FalconCam!

Yes he was part of FalconCam. He's actually behind the scenes for a lot of things that the library gets in the news for. He is part of the Monsanto thing too, and Credo and a bunch of other stuff. I am pretty amazed at some of the stuff he does, and he does it without a college degree. He's just super smart at this stuff. Way underpaid and under-credited for what he does but he's just glad to have job security and good benefits.

How exciting for Aaron! I didn't realize he was a part of that.

Good luck if you go to the Big E. It looks like we might be walking in the parade for Agawam Day for Relay For Life. I look forward to that if it happens. Any exposure is good for us.

After checking schedules we figured out our only chance for the Big E is tomorrow- Sunday. Hubby needs to go to work on Sunday the 21st to attend a reception where he will share an award for the popular FalconCam.

That happened to me on Long Island years ago. We went to Nathan's to eat and then left for the mall. We got to the mall and I realized I didn't have my bag. Back we went to Nathan's and they insisted they did not have the bag. My son called my phone and we could hear it behind the counter and I informed them I could hear it. That caused them to "find" my bag.

I see ZZ Top canceled. We are still working on a date to go. It will either have to be the 20th or a Sunday. The 13th and 27th we or hubby are booked.

Oh... if you are wondering, and you probably aren't.... the purse fiasco happened at Barnes & Noble in Holyoke. I sat down next to the train table and put it on the floor. I was using my tablet to read the news and Twitter and I guess by the time Abby was done playing with the trains I forgot I had it with me and walked off and left it. We went across the room by the storytime area and she asked me to take a picture of her. I said "I'm sorry I left my camera in the car..." well no, I didn't. I left it across the room! Never realized it though. My husband showed up, we went downstairs and I bought the books (my debit card was in my back pocket) and we had dinner at Red Robin. Didn't know my bag was missing until I got all the way home. UGH. UGH. UGH. It did enter my mind when I got in the car after Red Robin. I didn't see it on the seat but I just brushed the thought aside thinking it had slid to the floor or was in the back seat. I should have paid more attention to that thought. Would have saved a lot of work for everyone.

I saw that too (went to the Big Y and Big E websites after I saw your post yesterday) and decided NOT to buy since we aren't 100% on going. Our plans are.. fluid for this weekend, and next weekend we have our small town celebration & Belchertown fair, and on the 27th we are at Old Sturbridge. So the Big E may or may not happen. It's a busy month.

I found out today is the last day for discount tickets through Big Y. The savings is $3 per adult. We had ordered our through my husband's work, but I might go buy a few so I can go again.

We're talking about the Big E. I was hoping to do take her this weekend and not make hubby go, but she wants us both to be there. It's expensive for the 3 of us to go, and know she's going to want to do rides and games and stuff. So I guess we really haven't decided yet.

Sorry you didn't get to all the exhibits. I can understand wanting to let Abby guide the day. It can be overwhelming for sure to try to get to see all the things at a fair. It's how I feel about the Big E. You planning on going this year?

Sorry you got stiffed. We didn't go anywhere near it at the fair. Actually missed quite a bit of stuff because it was hot and my daughter and husband were uncomfortable in the heat so we skipped a whole 1/4 of the fair I think. Did what Abby wanted to do but skipped the exhibits that I wanted to see. Oh well.

I think the one at the fair was the one I did the fundraiser with and they stiffed me. It is a shame because one of the artists was one of my favorites, but the fact that the owner (who is from Greenfield) didn't give me the $210 owed or the gift certificate is just wrong.

Hope you had a good time at the fair!

Looks like there is a paint and sip place at the Franklin County Fair this weekend. I think it is one from Springfield.

Last night was my son's Jack and Jill. It was very well attended and they had over 100 raffle items donated. I won a gift basket to Victoria Secret. It was funny to have the dj call out "Steve's mom" as the winner of this prize. I will break it up and give some to my daughter I am sure. Then I was the highest bidder on winning getting to put a pie in the face of both of them. I took what I thought was the high road and gave both the pies to my son, sparing my future daughter in law. There's video on Facebook.

Not sure what is going on today for me. Heading to the gym soon I hope. Then grocery shopping and maybe even a walk in the park.

No...I go often because I find it relaxing and therapeutic. I actually find my paintings at his classes to be not as good as other classes I go to. Not sure why. He says it stresses him out to have me there because I am critical. I am no more critical than he would be, but it is tense when I go. I enjoy painting so I go to support him. Maybe it will get better at his classes.

I do enjoy painting, although my best friend is an instructor for one company I go to often and I find I don't always do my best work when he is instructing. I did a lighthouse a month ago and gave it to my aide who left. I think that one was my best so far.

Every time I see a place that does "sip and paint" I think of you. I saw one in Sturbridge and I saw one in the parade in Greenfield last night. :-)

My plan now is to do the fair on Sunday. One of Abby's friends will be there that day and we are going to try to coordinate a little bit.

Just recently my dad talked to me about how he knows his mind is starting to fail and that bothers him. He also stated he knows he won't live as long as his dad did, who died at 83. My dad is 73 right now. I told him he's too ornery and that Heaven doesn't want him yet. His death will be hard for me and I do not look forward to that day.

I hear rain possibly tomorrow. Not looking forward to that!

My dad and I live on opposite ends of the same county. I had last seen him in July at the family reunion but we didn't get much time to chat because I was dealing with Abby. It was also a time for him to spend with his brothers (one who has cancer very badly).

I am mindful that my grandfathers passed away in their early 70s and my dad will be 68 this year. I am mindful that he may not be here in 10 years when Abby hopefully graduates from high school. I am trying to be mindful that we are all getting older and sometimes I need to make the time happen. I don't want to have regrets later on.

My dad comes over every Sunday for coffee. Sometimes he stays long enough to get the coffee to go, other times (like this past weekend) he stays for a while and chats. I am very fortunate to have him still here. He is concerned about his failing memory. I really wish he would talk to the dr about it, but I don't particularly care for his dr.

Weather turned out fine. I didn't get rain until I was back in Belchertown after an afternoon at Old Sturbridge. Got to see Bob Olson do a magic show and a puppet show. Also a boat ride on the river.

I had considered going away to the beach this weekend and realized that was going to be not wise. I will go in a couple of weeks hopefully. I need some time away.

Hope the birthday party was fun. Today I am going to a friend's house for a cookout. They are often running very late so I am hesitant to go on time. I also worry about the weather since their house isn't that big. We'll see what happens. Enjoy OSV!

I saw your pictures on Facebook. Nice of you to babysit.

We were an hour late to the birthday party but once we got there I got to hang out with my 2 favorite moms from the class. I don't have either one of them on Facebook so I was happy to spend a couple of hours with them. Both of them have daughters who get help for reading. It's nice to compare notes about the school and what's working and whatever.

Today I'm taking Abby to OSV for the magic show and puppet show. We stayed up really late last night though so it might be a challenge to leave the house on time. It's about a 70-90 minute drive to get there, and I am avoiding the Pike today at all costs because of the traffic.

I posted a response yesterday to your husband's tooth situation, but see now it didn't go through. I am glad his issue seems to have a better spin on it for you.

I had forgotten what it felt like to sleep with a two year old. He was all over the bed! I cannot remember how many times I woke up with his feet or head in my side. I am trying to book a massage today to offset it.

Have fun at the birthday party!

Hubby is heading out to an overnight event. Abby and I are going to a birthday party for 9 year old twins today. I thought about walking but it is about 2 miles from our house and I don't think she'd do too well with it. Doesn't seem far in the car, but...

I think my husband just saved us money by breaking his tooth. He had been postponing a root canal. Now he doesn't need one. Just needs a crown which he would have needed anyway after the root canal.

I go back to the dentist Tuesday myself. I am there 4 times a year at this point because of gum issues.

I understand that! This was my year for dental work and I have maxed out my benefits for it and then some.

I went through something similar recently myself. I completely understand. Wasn't a mammo, but lower down. Had 3 of them including one at a specialist's office. I am completely fine. Not happy with all the bills for them I am paying but at least I'm fine.

Me too. This kind of news was beyond anything I have ever been through. It's not like worrying about what the mechanic will find during a car repair or potentially losing a nail after slamming your finger in a door. I tried to explain this to a friend, that no matter even if you try not to worry this is the kind of information that can alter life. I am thankful for the good news.

Went to the Balloon Festival in Plainville, CT this morning. It was beautiful! I wish I could have kept going and headed to the beach, but I have my family reunion today. I will go there for a while, then come back and get myself ready for the first day with students tomorrow.

Those call backs are the worst, the waiting anyway. I had a call back after my first mammo and I was so nervous! Hopefully it's nothing. I need to go in for one in about a month. Got a notice from Cooley that I am due around Sept. 23rd.

Mammo results came back. They found something so I have to go back for a follow up. I can honestly tell you I am a bit freaked out. I really wish my mom was here. Funny my dad called earlier and as he was hanging up, he paused and said, "Call me if you need me." Of course as soon as he hung up the tears started. It will be a long weekend.

I wish I could sleep better now. I find myself awake longer and waking earlier than I want to. I hope that changes before school starts for Abby. Nothing like having a cranky, moody kid at school.

I was up early today too. I hope to get to bed on time tonight or I will struggle with sitting through another day of PD tomorrow. It is funny how we are asked to sit for hours listening to people talk about a new way of teaching, but we would NEVER want to do this to our students.

Amherst is pretty good. I've seen other fires happen and it seems like the kids were well taken care of.

Meanwhile we got an email from Abby's 3rd grade teacher. Guess I have some supplies to get after all. The basics are covered but they need to bring in flour, salt, and a few other things. Some project they will be doing during week 2 making a 3D map of New England.

I read something in a local newspaper that said multiple agencies are providing a coordinated efforts to help the victims. About 1/2 of the apartments were being rented to people affiliated with Umass either as students, faculty, grad students etc... and UMass is among the organizations helping out. The director of LSSE never got back to me but I'm not going to worry about it at this point. Sounds like people are helping those that need it.

That seems unfortunate that the camp director wasn't aware of the fire. Hopefully the absences were not all displaced families.

Latest I heard was there were only 8 kids affected. I didn't hear back from LSSE director. I talked to camp director yesterday and she didn't even know about the fire, but did say there had been some absences and the kids were from Southpoint so it could be related. I am hoping she will tell me more this afternoon. She said she was going to look into it.

Let me know if I can collect or donate. I always think fire is the most severe tragedy of all. I am really glad everyone got out! I know I saw on the news that one neighbor had taken in two girls who were affected. It is great that the landlord is proactive as well.

You've probably seen the news by now. It was a very serious fire. 36 families are displaced. Luckily it was during the day and everyone was able to evacuate. No fatalities. (I haven't heard about any pet deaths.) We're talking about at least 100 people made homeless, many of them children.

I fear at least some of them were probably Abby's campmates. I know the camp bus goes to that neighborhood and while it is a very large apartment complex odds are someone she knows was affected, is being affected by this tragedy.

I think Red Cross and the landlords are spearheading the aid coordination. Some will be housed in empty units, others might have to go to hotels. I don't know. If I hear of a way to give before the end of the week I will do something.

I hope it wasn't too serious a fire!

We went to the CT shore yesterday for a birthday party. Unfortunately even though we were within a minute walk to the beach, we didn't go for long. Hopefully I will get to the beach for a day in the near future. I need some time to just watch the waves.

There was a big fire in Southpoint apartments in South Amherst yesterday. I am wondering if some of my daughter's campmates were displaced by the fire. I am pretty sure that is a neighborhood where kids live. :-( Guess I won't know until Monday.

That is awesome that it changed for the better for Abby and for the girl! When my daughter was in high school she had a bully. I spoke to the teacher in November and it didn't get better. I ended up going to the school for a meeting with the teacher, guidance, and the head of the English dept. By then the girl had graduated and there was little that could be done. I went because I felt the teacher ignored my daughter's needs and allowed the bullying. The teacher ended up leaving the school before the next year started. I am not sure if the meeting is why, but I am sure she was reprimanded for allowing bullying. People have no idea how harmful words are.

Abby had a girl at camp who was her "bully". It went on for weeks. I felt really powerless because I didn't even know who it was. Abby never gave me a name. Then one day I asked Abby as I was picking her up if the girl was in the room. She pointed her out to me. She and I quietly had a chat with a couple of the counselors, and they promised to follow-up with the child the next day. Now a week or two later the two girls are playing together (usually with a 3rd girl involved). So kids can change. I am not sure what was done or said. Maybe the kid didn't realize how badly her words and actions were affecting Abby until it was brought up to her. I wish Abby had spoken up sooner but I'm glad it's cleared up for now. It's made me feel more positive toward the camp.

Years ago when my cousin announced she wanted to have a baby, I just about lost my mind. I had never expressed my opinions to family before, but just could not hold my tongue that day. I stated that she didn't have a maternal bone in her body and should get a dog if she wanted to mother something. The following week she got a dog and that weekend they went away, leaving the dog locked in the bathroom with food, water, and newspaper. It made my point exactly! Now she has a 10 year old son and her parenting has been questioned repeatedly. She had a state grant because he has autism, and the agency removed the grant until she agreed to parenting classes. She refused, stating she is a good parent. Her husband left her too. We all hope he will fight for custody. It might give the boy a chance at a better life.
