10 Tips to Keep from Overeating at a Party

By: Stepfanie Romine : 1/30/2009 1:53:11 PM : 27 comments
Temptations abound at parties, but celebration doesn't have to mean overindulgence. Follow these tips to stay on track at your Super Bowl parties this weekend.

Say no the first time to passed hors d'oeuvres. Chances are good that food will come around again. See what's being served before you decide what to eat.

Limit your alcohol. Inhibitions are lowered with every drink, and those cocktails aren't calorie free. Alternate alcohol with water or another calorie free drink. And don't combine alcohol with caffeine. Caffeine speeds up the rate at which alcohol is metabolized, and it masks the effect of the alcohol.

Eat before you go. Don't go to a party starving. Eat a hard-boiled egg and an apple, a banana with some peanut butter or a slice of turkey. The protein will fill you up for few calories. You'll be less likely to binge if you're not overly hungry.

Treat appetizers as a meal. If you're going to eat 400 calories worth of appetizers, know that that's your dinner. Don't expect to go home and eat a "real" meal.

Survey the spread before you fill your plate. Confronted by so many rich foods, you might want to start piling up the food, but stop and take a deep breath. Think before you serve yourself (and try to serve yourself, so you control the serving size).

Keep track of what you're eating. Don't mindlessly eat, and try not to eat and make conversation at the same time. If your eating and drinking is spread out, you might not realize how many calories you're eating. Just because you're not eating an entire meal doesn't mean that those are free calories.

Buddy up. If you're worried about eating too many sweets, share your dessert with someone else. You'll eat less and not do as much damage.

Use a smaller plate, or commit to just one round of food. Don't pile your food so high that's it's falling off the plate.

Be choosy, and stick to proper serving sizes. Take only those foods you really like, and don't overload on them.

Bring a dish, if appropriate. If you bring something healthy, like salsa with vegetables, whole-grain crackers and light dip or a large salad, you know there's at least one option for you at the party. Take small helpings of other dishes and load up on your healthier one.

This could happen to anyone of us.

The recent tragedy of a young woman being kidnapped and eventually killed; after she had repeatedly given the kidnapper a wrong PIN number to her ATM card. If she knew the method below, she could have been saved.

So I think it is important enough to let you know. If you should ever be forced by robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin number in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broad cast on FOX TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists.

Sierra Nevada Stout holds the honorable place of first (meaning the most caloric content) with a whopping 210 calories. These figures are taken at a twelve ounce scale. It is not a very popular beer. Of course, the most popular beer runs along the midline somewhere between 140 and 180 calories for every 12 ounce serving. In some cases, this is more than a Hershey Bar. On average, most men consume between 4 and 8 beers every time they partake. Very few men choose to have just one with dinner or after work. This means that an evening of beer drinking often costs men between 560 calories (that’s a Big Mac and a soda) and 960 calories (that’s an entire pizza plus a Big Mac, with a little room left over for that Hershey Bar.) This is a significant amount of calories for anyone, but especially for men who do not have the time to work out. Daily.

Busting the Top 5 Excuses to Overindulge During the Holidays
Strategies to Cope with Holiday Eating
-- By Becky Hand, Licensed & Registered Dietitian
SparkPeople Sponsors help keep the site free!
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
Everyone was eating…even the mouse!

The most wonderful time of the year is back, and that means one thing: notorious holiday parties! Between the office buffet, neighborhood open house, family gatherings, religious festivities, and community get-togethers, sticking to a healthy eating plan becomes, well, difficult to say the least.

The reason? Simple. Tempting, high fat, calorie-laden dishes are the common denominator of almost every holiday celebration. And excuses for overindulgence are as easy to find as holiday cheer.

Check out the following excuses. If any of them sounds familiar, don’t worry. SparkPeople has the strategies to help you deal with these excuses, and still enjoy the holiday season.

Excuse #1: The food looks and tastes so good! How can I resist?
It’s true—there will be plenty of terrific foods. But will you feel good after you eat them? Imagine yourself overindulging. How do you feel afterwards? Was the taste really worth it? Could you have received the same pleasure with a smaller amount?

Excuse #2: It’s a special occasion. It only comes once a year.
The holidays only come once a year, but the parties, events, and gifts of food never seem to end! Stop and decide which ones are really worth the splurge. When it is time for the splurge, bank calories from earlier in the day.

Excuse #3: Everyone else is eating. The hostess will be offended.
Just because everyone is eating does not mean that you have to eat everything too. Choosing smaller portions shouldn’t offend anyone. Remember, “If you half-it, you can have it.” And sometimes it may be necessary to “just say no”.

Excuse #4: I should offer desserts to the company in my home.
Keeping your favorite desserts at home usually spells trouble. When treats are in the house, more of the dessert usually ends up in you, rather than your guests. Therefore, keep some low fat, low-calorie alternatives on hand. Check out SparkPeople’s Dessert Recipes for some ideas. Make a trip to your local library and flip through the healthy holiday cooking magazines and books for other creative alternatives.

Excuse #5: I’ll get back to my healthy eating plan tomorrow.
This thinking is okay, as long as it is realistic. Make sure an occasional splurge does NOT become a repeated excuse (or turn into “next week” or “next month”).

Putting It All Together…
The best defense against holiday eating disasters is a combination of both planning and strategy:

1. Take inventory. Identify all the situations that make it difficult for you to eat healthy during the holiday season. Is it office parties? Food courts at the shopping mall? Family gatherings? Extra baking and cooking at home?

2. Plan a system of attack. For example:

* Bring a low calorie appetizer to the office party.
* Don’t go shopping on an empty stomach.
* Use healthier substitutions and make a low-calorie, low-fat dessert for the family gathering.
* Budget calories throughout the day, so you can afford to spend a few more at the party.
* Burn extra calories in a longer-than-usual exercise session. Some research shows that adding just 10 more minutes of intense exercise to your usual workout can stave off holiday weight gain.
* Stay focused by getting 7-8 hours of sleep nightly.

3. Remember to reward. Making it through the holidays can be hard work. Establish a reward system to stay motivated along the way. Deposit a pre-determined amount of money (the amount should be based on what you can financially afford) in a jar every week that you are able to follow your healthy eating plan. Then after the holidays—when the sales are big—go out and buy something special just for you!
4. Stay positive. Everyone makes mistakes, so there will be times when even the most disciplined person will slip. Don’t worry or stress during these mishaps—it is critical to get back on track. Staying positive is half the battle.

Remember, armed with a good plan and a positive attitude...
You will be nestled all snug in your bed,
While visions of carrot sticks (and low-calorie dip) dance in your head.

Post-Workout Snack May Hamper Weight Loss
It's smart for athletes, not so smart for average gym-goer, studies show.

By Amanda Gardner
Health Day Reporter

(SOURCES: Barry S. Braun, Ph.D., associate professor, kinesiology, and director, Energy Metabolism Laboratory, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Jim White, R.D., personal trainer, registered dietitian and national spokesman, American Dietetic Association, Virginia Beach, Va.; 2008 and December 2005 Journal of Applied Physiology; 2007 Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism)

FRIDAY, Nov. 14 (Health Day News) -- Elite athletes are advised to "fill the tank" with an energy bar or sports drink soon after a workout.

But for mere mortals -- folks who are simply trying to keep their weight in check or stave off heart disease -- adding calories right after burning them up could negate the benefits of the sweat, researchers say.

"If people are going to go out and exercise to benefit their health, they should not be eating back the calories immediately upon finishing, or within a couple of hours of finishing," said Barry S. Braun, director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. "In order to maintain the benefits, you need to be in this calorie deficit."

"Athletes are always advised to do exactly the opposite," he continued. "That's great for athletes, but for the other 99.9 percent of the world, that's probably the wrong thing."

Braun is co-author of two papers appearing in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism and one paper published in the Journal of Applied Physiology that detail the findings.

Ten young, overweight men and women participated in each experiment.

For the first study, volunteers were asked to walk on a treadmill for an hour a day, burning about 500 calories each time. Half of the group were given a high-calorie carbohydrate drink immediately after their workout while the other half abstained.

Exercise increased insulin efficiency by 40 percent in those who did not eat afterward. But the benefit was completely wiped out for those who had a high-carb drink after sweating.

These results had the researchers wondering if the type of calorie would make any difference.

For the second study, volunteers cycled for 75 minutes. Immediately after exercising, half of the participants ate a meal high in carbohydrates while the other half ate a meal low in carbohydrates but containing the same number of calories.

The ability of insulin to clear sugar from the blood was greater among people who ate the low-carb meal, the researchers found.

"It seems as though giving people back carbohydrates blunts or diminishes this exercise benefit," Braun said.

The third study was all about timing. Participants were given identical meals before, immediately after or three hours after cycling for 75 minutes.

The effectiveness of insulin was about the same no matter what the time, the study revealed.

"That really didn't make a whole lot of difference, which surprised us," Braun stated. "What did seem to matter was whether you ate back calories, and whether those calories were mostly carbohydrates."

Make Your Workout Work For You

There's more to a great fitness regimen than a positive attitude and a good pair of sneakers. Jim White, a registered dietitian, personal trainer and spokesman for the American Dietetic Association, offered these tips on maximizing your workout:

* Keep yourself well-hydrated. "Being dehydrated can drop levels of strength and aerobic capacity," White said. Drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water a day including about 16 ounces an hour before you exercise, four-to-eight ounces every 15 minutes during exercise and another 16 ounces an hour after you finish working out.
* Incorporate a 5-to-10 minute warm-up and light stretching before you start working out. "It could just be going on a bike or a treadmill," White said. "It warms up the muscles and gets your mind ready for exercising." And don't forget to stretch after you exercise.
* Get going with some music. "Studies show this leads to a workout that increases muscular strength and endurance," White said.
* Work out with a friend and partner. "This can be a good distraction and motivating," White said. "If you want to increase your workout intensity, find someone who's a little bit fitter than you are."
* Make sure you're getting enough sleep. "That's going to make sure your focus is there," White said.
* Time your workout to suit your schedule. "Some people love to jump start their day," White said. "I work out every single night. It's a matter of preference."
* Set workout goals and write them down at the beginning of each week. You'll be more likely to stick to them.
* Some experts recommend doing weight training first, followed by cardio. But, White said, "the biggest thing is just to do it."

when eating at home measure every single piece of food that goes in your mouth. a kitchen scale is not expensive and most often we tend to put too much in the cups or spoons.

I know it's tedious to measure everything but it's worth it! i've got a small tefal scale which i love and when i use it faithfully i really lose the weight as i should have!

"Try not to banish certain foods when dieting "- party true. I banished french fries and all fried foods for the past 3 yrs and no, i don't miss them or crave them. I banished red meat over 10 yrs ago and I don't want it or crave it. But then again, in both cases it's abt foods that are NOT healthy for you. Same goes for white bread. It's not healthy to eat it, so I don't eat it...

8 Tips For Losing Weight and Keeping It Off
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 - 7:23am

By Kathleen Goodwin, RD
1. Never crash diet to lose weight

When you lose weight rapidly your body is typically only losing glycogen (carbohydrate) and water weight, not fat. Your body thinks that it's starving and reduces its metabolic rate, which makes it harder for your body to burn each calorie (they burn at a slower pace than they normally would). Then when you start eating normally again, your body stores as much food as it can into your fat cells in case of another “famine.”
2. Best weight loss plan: substitute foods instead of eliminating them

Although many people feel that “diet” or “reduced fat” foods are not as good as the original, it can be a big help to buy less fatty snack foods. Try out different reduced fat brands and items and who knows, you may find something that you like even better than the original. The key is making sustainable changes - if you can't live without tortilla chips, trying to eliminate them entirely from your diet won't work. Making the change to a lower-calorie reduced fat tortilla chip can make a noticeable change in total calories consumed over time.
3. What drinks for losing weight

Cutting soda out of your diet completely can save the average person 360 calories or more each day. Even diet soda, fruit juices, and whole milk can add unnecessary calories to your daily intake. Instead, drink lots of water and switch from whole to skim or even soy milk; the little things can make a big difference.
Tip: Buy a Treadmill or Exercise Bike and exercise for 30 minutes while you watch your favorite TV Show
4. Weight loss = healthy diet and moving around

Getting up, moving around, and exercising will reduce the amount of food that you will need to cut back on. There are obviously many opportunities to be athletic and active (i.e. sports teams, the gym, going for a jog, etc.) if that interests you, but these aren't the only ways to increase your activity level. You can walk to school, bike to work, walk up and down the stairs a few times before you take a shower, take an extra lap or two around the grocery store.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 30-45 minutes of moderate aerobic performed 3-5 times per week in their Guidelines for Healthy Aerobic Activity, but if all you can do is walk around the block twice before you go to bed, that's a good start. Anything is better than nothing, and it's harder to be eating while you're moving around, so it may result in you eating slightly less as well as burning more calories.

The best thing about aerobic exercise is that the benefits are cumulative - you essentially gain the same health benefits from taking three ten-minute walks throughout the day as you do from taking one 30 minute walk. With this in mind, it can be much easier to break your activity goal into manageable pieces that will fit into your day.
5. Gradual changes are best for losing weight

Gradually ease into your diet if possible. Many diet programs allow you to do this. Remember that small changes are easier to stick with than drastic ones. Start by always leaving a little extra on your plate, or drinking water instead of soda. Smaller changes are also more likely to remain with you when the duration of your diet is complete. Aim for behavior-change goals that you know you will be able to maintain over years, not just weeks.

6. Don't overeat

If you're full, or even simply satisfied, stop eating. There's no need to eat until your stomach feels like it's going to explode. Also, keep in mind that it takes a while for the nutrients in your food to enter your bloodstream, and circulate to the nerve centers in your brain that regulate appetite. Eating slowly is helpful in this regard--you give your body a chance to recognize that you've had enough to eat.

7. Try not to banish certain foods when dieting

Don't tell yourself that you can NEVER have something again because you will immediately crave it. People need to eat fats to be healthy as well, just make sure that you're eating them in moderation, and maybe try to balance out a fatty food you ate earlier in the day by choosing celery sticks over chips for your snack. Try to get yourself to think, “I know I CAN have it, but should I have it?”
8. Successful weight loss: be in it for the long term

Crash diets and unsustainable exercise routines
will not keep you at your desired weight for the long term. You need to focus on realistic, acheivable goals - behavior modification that you can live with for years, instead of just weeks. For an example, let's say that a hypothetical person is ten pounds overweight, but at perfect energy balance - they eat exactly as many calories as they burn every day, so their weight remains constant. If that person sacrifices one small snack that they have every day, let's say a handful of chips equaling 100 calories, over the course of a year that person will lose over ten pounds! A pound of fat on your body represents 3500 stored calories. 100 calories X 365 days in a year = 36,500 calories, or over ten pounds of fat. Small changes can make a big difference in your health.

For those of you who read about our dog last night, Jerry found her, down in the ravine, which is very far down a steep incline. She couldn't get back up, piled some leaves up near the water and waited. He found her today at 3, carried her up. Yes she is alive but not without injury. She has a broken leg. We will have to put her down. As I see it, I got to say goodbye and so did the kids. Its closure not wondering where she is in the dark cold night.

Sad sad sad and I just downed about 3 ounces of tortillia chips!!! I know its bad. I have not gone over the deep end in a very long time but......

emoticon Jerry has a very old dog, Lady, she is 14 and having much difficulty walking, can't use one back leg, falls alot. Last night his daughter let her out to go to the bathroom as they always have for years. When she went out to get her again a bit later Lady didn't come. They called her for hours. This morning she was still gone. She does like to roam into the woods and to the creek to hunt and fish. Jerry went looking for her this afternoon all over the 2 acres, the woods, the lake, the creek. No Lady girl. It is so freezing cold out. He thinks she probably went off to die. I am dying inside thinking she is out there cold and hurt and suffering. I have not stopped crying since 5. I had to leave and come back to my house to be with my two dogs. I totally without thinking ate all those chips........and I don't care. Well Iprobably do because I am telling you all but I just wish I could do something for his dog. This not knowing is awful and we can't find her. Its going on 24 hours and its been snowing and colder than cold. Help me.

11 Quick Tips: Slim Down Your Fast Food Orders

By: Stepfanie Romine : 11/12/2008 12:18:39 PM : 93 comments
We all know fast food isn't good for us,
but sometimes it seems like there's no other option.
Follow these rules, and you can drive through
with a clear conscience!

11 Ways to Beef Up (the Nutrition in) Your Fast Food Meal

1. Look up nutrition info online before you go so you can plan your meal.

2. Say no to combo meals, even if you'll save a bit of money. They're inevitably larger and full of empty calories.

3. Say no when asked "Do you want fries with that?" Get a baked potato, a fruit cup or some vegetables instead (check the kids menu). If you can't resist, get a small order and split them with a friend. Eat them one at a time to savor them.

4. Eat side dishes, like chili, soup, or baked potatoes, as a main course, or split appetizers among several people.

5. Order from the kids menu. The portions are smaller and there are usually healthy side dishes (fruit cups and carrot sticks) and drinks (milk or real fruit juice).

6. Drink water. Regular sodas can have as many as 400 calories!

7. Ask to order sauce on the side and nix the cheese. (It's just processed American cheese anyway, so you're not missing much in terms of flavor.)

8. Choose ketchup, mustard and salsa over mayo or creamy dressings.

9. Take off the top slice of bread or bun to save calories (at least 75)!

10. Nix anything "crispy," breaded or fried. Opt for grilled or roasted meats instead.

11. Avoid trendy or specialty menu items. They're likely to have high-calorie extras like bacon, cheese or creamy sauces. Stick to original or traditional hamburgers and other sandwiches.

HELL NO! However, I can shut down on her for awhile. I couldn't leave because I love her dad too much. Good thing I have my own house to go to at times like these. Tonight I took the boy to his football banquet and was great at the buffet, don't think I went overboard, yet to record and see. When I got him home she was leaving in her car.........a no no on a school night. I am sure she didn't think I would be pulling in as she was getting ready to leave but oh well. I didn't get out of my car, I said goodnight and thankyou to the boy and I left....of course texting her daddy that she was leaving.....hmmmm too bad, got caught. ahahahhaha Im evil sometimes!!

FMJ, I'm sorry to hear about ur troubles..but this too shall pass..our children will always make mistakes not matter what we teach them. we just pray that when things arise they know the right thing to do..u once said she's ur step-daughter. nothing u could do about her upbringing. what she does is in no way a reflection on u. just be there for her and at least she knows she has someone on her side. I will keep u and her in my prayers. yes it is ironic that the money she took was not worth taking b/c she just had to pay it back..in a round about way..lets pray that b/c she doesn't have a prior record it will be taken into consideration and the judge will be lenient on her. Good luck and take it easy!

Hello Luisa,
I know I've been hiding this week what with my daughter's legal things over our heads. Court, arraignment was yesterday. As much as I want to believe what the DA and lawyer is saying, as well as his wife who is my divorce lawyer, I just can't get that hope up. She was charged with 4th degree grand theft taking from her employer. SOOO STUPID it makes no sense to me what she did. Camera right there above her head!!! She is a good girl and I just don't get it. The legalminded tell me that they won't go for 4th degree felony , they will plea it down to misdemeanor then make restitution before pretrial and probably get it to a violation. That way nothing is on her record that will mar her for life. I have stood by her but she forked over the retainer of 500 bucks of her own....probably her bosses money . That sort of makes me laugh. However she was arrested last Friday, I found out from her Monday in an email to work. I was ready to be sick and shaking so badly I had to leave my class. We have made it through the week. I didn't eat great but most days remained in calorie range. I didn't exercise since last weekend and I didn't sleep much. Today I was in such a cruddy mood that fiance and I butted heads. I decided to just go home, be with my dogs, and a book. I posted a few things and made myself get on the eliptical...did 30 minutes. Then I found a 15 minute exercise ball video on here and did that. I am feeling better and will stay in and away from all temptations tonight. Maybe actually get to sleep early! Just wanted to check in with you and say hello, fill you in. Have a good weekend.

How Much Exercise Do You Need to Start Feeling the Benefits?

It seems that this number fluctuates depending on your fitness level and goals, but the surprising How_much_exercise_do_you_need_to_st answer is it takes way LESS time than you think to start getting into shape. A new study out of Duke University even showed that one hour a week for severely overweight participants had far reaching effects on their health, mood, and overall well-being.

If you are someone who is looking to lose 15-20 pounds you may find that 30 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous exercise is all you need in conjunction with a healthy diet.

If your goal is to lose more weight than that, you can always start with 30 minutes per day and gradually increase your workout time when you plateau.

Overall, the new studies that continue to be released are great news for anyone who's looking to live a healthy and fit lifestyle without spending hours in the gym.

30 Minutes per day

FIT IN 30 MINUTES PER DAY!

Most people know that they should have five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but aren't aware of the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day.

As part of its FIT-IN campaign to encourage more people to take up exercise, the Sports Council for Wales has 10 top tips for people to help them reach this goal. These are only small changes but will help lead to a much healthier lifestyle:

1. GARDENING:

Tone up, burn calories and relieve stress. After half an hour of digging and shovelling you can expect to burn 250 calories, compared to 105 for weeding and 100 for raking. And mowing the lawn shouldn't be forgotten — burning over 200 calories depending on the size of your lawn, of course!

2. CYCLING:

Leave the car on the drive and cycle to your local attraction or park this weekend. The whole family can join in and after 60 minutes of cycling you will have burnt off approximately 300 calories. Kids will find this much more fun than being stuck indoors!

3. WALKING:

The recommended 10,000 steps a day will help protect against a range of lifestyle-related illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. Too many people are quick to jump in the car to drive the kids to the school or local shops, which are normally within easy walking distance. Getting off the bus before your normal stop is also a great way to reach your 10,000 steps!! A brisk walk will burn around 100 calories in 15 to 20 minutes.

4. STAIRS:

Most people have access to stairs at home or in work so use them. You will tone up your bottom and legs and burn calories - the more effort you put in the greater calories you'll use. You can burn approximately 100 calories after 15 to 20 minutes of climbing the stairs so forget the lift next time!

5. HOUSEWORK:

Dusting, hovering and changing bedding is a great way to raise your heart rate and tone your muscles. Moderate housework will burn 160 calories per hour but the higher the intensity, the higher the calories. Ditch your cleaner and make sure you get the health reward and personal satisfaction instead!

6. WASHING THE CAR:

Car washes may seem an easy option but you'll feel proud of your shiny new car by putting some effort in. In 20 to 25 minutes you can burn 100 calories washing and waxing your car. You'll also improve flexibility and upper body strength and save money!

7. WASHING THE WINDOWS:

Not everybody has a ladder and bucket to hand, but even cleaning the downstairs windows and patio doors are a help. Think of all that stretching and use of arm and leg muscles and at the end of the day, your sparkling windows — you'll also burn 100 calories after about 20 to 30 minutes.

8. SHOPPING:

Free local delivery is offered by many supermarkets but think how many calories you'll use walking to the shops, packing your goods and carrying the shopping home. Even shopping for clothes is good exercise, especially trying different outfits. You can expect to burn at least 100 calories an hour. What a great excuse to splash the cash!

9. OFFICE WORK:

Most people are guilty of sitting by their computer all day which isn't very good for their health. Instead, go for a walk and deliver a message rather than sending an e-mail, walk around the office regularly to get a drink and make the most of your lunch hour with a gentle stroll.

10. TV:

Lose your control and get off the sofa every time you want to change channels. It’s also important that you don't sit down and veg all night — you can still stretch and do gentle exercising while watching your favourite programme.

Huw Jones, Chief Executive of the Sports Council for Wales, said: "We hope these simple ways of incorporating exercise into everyday life will appeal to those who usually think they need to go to the gym or attend a fitness class to exercise. We want to promote ways which they may not have considered such as gardening, housework and shopping, which all burn calories and count towards your 30 minutes of exercise a day which everybody should be aiming towards."

and here's the other side of that information Luisa.

Snacks if you are craving a Halloween goodie bag that equal 250......Each of the groups I will post is 250 in calories, not one peice, the whole thing. Of course they are empty calories but if you saw yesterdays you know how to burn that 250 off......

A. 1 caramel apple pop, 3 tootsie roll midgies, 2 nestle crunch mini bars, 2 nestle butterfinger mini bars.

B.2 snickers mini bars, 1 tootsie pop, 2 bit o honey chews, 1 nestle butterfinger mini bar

C. 1 DOTS mini box, two 3 musketeer mini bars, 1 baby ruth fun size bar, 1 kit kat mini bar

D. 2 Dove Brand mini chocolates, 2 jolly rancher candies, 2 starburst fruit chews, 1 Reese PB cup mini, 1 Butterfinger mini

E. 1 skittles fun size bag, 1 York Peppermint Pattie, 1 Good and Plenty snack size box, 1 Kit Kat mini bar.

So as you can see you can eat some Halloween Treats. However just looking at it as I typed I think I gained weight!! Oh but I do love those Good and Plenty candies!! It takes me back as do the Bit o Honey, and DOTS..........Haha. emoticon

How Your Diet Affects Your Sleep

Author:

Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE

New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical College

Medically Reviewed On: September 20, 2001

As a registered dietitian, I see many clients who complain of fatigue due to poor sleep. If it is a chronic problem, I first tell them to check with their physician to rule out any medical causes. Once this has been done, I try to address lifestyle and/or dietary issues that may contribute to insomnia. By making some changes in your diet or lifestyle, you may be able to improve your sleep. I recommend the following guidelines:

* Do not use alcohol to help you fall asleep. Although alcohol may initially induce sleep, once it wears off, the sleep tends to be fragmented.

# Limit caffeine during the 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. Approximately 50% of the caffeine consumed at 7 PM remains in the body at 11 PM. Remember that caffeine is present in many different foods, beverages and medications. The following are some examples of common caffeine sources:
Coffee (5 oz. cup)
Brewed, drip method 60 - 180 mg caffeine
Instant 30 - 120 mg caffeine
Decaffeinated 1 - 5 mg caffeine
Tea (5 oz. cup)
Brewed 60 - 180 mg caffeine
Instant 25 - 50 mg caffeine
Iced (12 oz. Cup) 67 - 76 mg caffeine
Chocolate
dark/semisweet 1 oz. - 5 - 35 mg caffeine
Soft drinks
cola (12 oz.) 36 - 47 mg caffeine
Non-prescription drugs
Dexatrim 200 mg caffeine
No Doz 100 mg caffeine
Excedrin 65 mg caffeine

* Limit smoking prior to bedtime, as nicotine is a stimulant.

* Avoid heavy or spicy foods just prior to bed. These meals can interfere with sleep by causing heartburn.

* If the hunger associated with an empty stomach keeps you from sleeping, try having a light snack such as crackers, cereal and milk, or yogurt before going to bed.

* Limit liquids of any kind for at least 90 minutes before bedtime if the need to urinate wakes you up in the middle of the night. It takes about 90 minutes for the body to process liquids. This problem is especially common in older men.

* Regular exercise can increase your odds of getting a good night's sleep. But avoid exercise within 3 hours prior to going to bed as this will boost alertness and have a negative effect on sleep. Studies have shown that exercising more than 3 to 6 hours before going to bed has the most positive effect on falling asleep and staying asleep.
# Some of my clients find that foods containing tryptophan aids in sleep. Tryptophan is a naturally occurring amino acid, (the building blocks of protein), which the brain converts to serotonin. Serotonin is a sleep-inducing hormone. Contrary to popular belief, foods high in tryptophan, such as turkey, do not necessarily lead to greater production of serotonin. This is because the other amino acids block the brain's uptake of tryptophan. Carbohydrate-rich foods, such as pasta, bread, cereal, crackers, etc. tend to lead to the greatest production of serotonin. Try a light bedtime snack of crackers or a slice of toast with jam.

Avoid tryptophan sold in health food stores, as there have been problems with contamination of the supplements in the past. In 1990, over 30 people died and more than 1500 people contacted a rare and potential deadly blood disorder from consuming certain tryptophan supplements. It is unclear if the problems were from a contaminant, excess tryptophan, or a combination of the two. It is recommended that supplements be avoided.

# Melatonin has been getting a great deal of attention in recent years for its supposed sleep inducing effects. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland deep in the human brain. Melatonin controls the body's circadian rhythm, which is our internal clock that tells us when to sleep and when to wake up. As we get older, we produce less melatonin, which may account in part for insomnia in older adults. Synthetic melatonin supplements sold in health food stores are used by many people to induce sleep and to promote a sound sleep.

At this time, there have been no conclusive, well-designed studies examining the effects of melatonin on sleep. Researchers are unclear as to what the therapeutic effects of melatonin are or what dosage should be used. In addition, it is unknown if there are any significant side effects of melatonin, if there are any interactions between melatonin and other drugs, or if it can be used by people with certain medical conditions. Although, some studies have demonstrated that melatonin has a positive effect on sleep, more research is needed before it can be promoted as a safe, effective sleep aid.

My personal observations regarding the effectiveness of melatonin as a sleep aid have been quite variable. I have several patients who find melatonin to be very effective, both in falling asleep and promoting a deep sleep. But I also have patients who report no effect whatsoever. The most common side effects that I have seen at this point from melatonin are a groggy or "hungover" feeling in the morning, headache, and stomach upset. I have seen no serious side effects reported. Since melatonin's effect on sleep, its long-term safety, or interactions with other drugs remains to be seen, my advice to patients is that if you choose to take melatonin, it should be used with caution. Do not exceed the recommended dosage and stop taking it if you experience any unpleasant side effects. The dosage ranges from 1 to 3 mg. I recommend starting with a small dose, as too large of a dose may make you feel extremely groggy in the morning. Melatonin should be avoided if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, nursing, or have severe allergies or an autoimmune disease. It should not be given to children.

# Valerian is an herb that is believed to have a calming, relaxing effect on the body. It has been used for centuries and is believed by many people to be useful for insomnia, mild anxiety and restlessness. The exact mechanism of action is unknown. However, it may act as a depressant to the central nervous to produce a mild tranquilizing effect.

As with melatonin, it is unknown at this point if valerian is effective or associated with any side effects. The recommended dosage is 50 to 100 drops of tincture, or tea prepared from 1 teaspoon of dried root. There are also supplements standardized to at least 0.5% valerenic acid with added valerian root. The dose is 1 to 2 pills (100 mg. each) before bed. As with all herbs, do not take while pregnant or nursing and discontinue use if you have an adverse reaction. Also, avoid valerian if you are taking any other sedatives or tranquilizers. Summary
There are many reasons why we may have trouble falling asleep or staying sleep. It is certainly worth trying to make some changes in your lifestyle or diet. It may be a simple answer to a better night's sleep.

85 Tips & Strategies for Dining Out
Take the Challenge Out of Dining
-- By SparkPeople

4) ORDERING UP
Many people stumble here as they make split-second decisions and rationalize away poor choices. But since you have a plan ahead of time, it should make it easier to stay on course. If you’re faced with a menu and no time to prepare, there are still a number of rules of thumb and tricks you can use.

* Try to order first. Listening to everyone else’s choices can be pretty tempting.
* Don’t ever be shy about asking questions or making requests. The food is every bit as important as the restaurant, the table and the setting, so make sure it’s what you want.
* Try ordering menu items a la carte. Platters, combos and meals may come with extras you might not want. For example, a group of side items can make a great meal and fruit can make a delicious appetizer.
* Ask about the size of the dish. This could be important information when watching calories.
* You can add vegetables to just about anything (salad, pasta, soup, cheeseburgers) if you just ask.
* Watch out for cheese, sour cream, gravies and special sauces.
* Ask for your food not to be prepared with butter, cream sauces or oil
* When in doubt, opt for brighter color. Most high-calorie, high-fat menu items are brown, beige, white or pale yellow (other than some desserts, of course).
* Don’t feel rushed into making a hasty decision. Just because your server is in a hurry doesn’t mean you have to be. At the same time, if you’ve made a healthy decision, stop looking at the menu immediately.
* Try ordering one course at a time. Order a healthy appetizer, but don’t order your soup or salad until you’re finished, then eventually your entrée. Sure, you may be starving now, but how will you feel in 20 minutes after the appetizer? Still feel like facing that pile of country fried chicken? Take your time, relax and enjoy.

LOSING WEIGHT AND KEEPING IT OFF!

* Eat only when hungry.
* When eating at home, take smaller portions than usual; go back for more if you are still hungry.
* When eating out, ask for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal and put half of the food in the box before you start eating.
* If you decide to splurge on a donut or pastry, throw half of it away before you start eating. "What's more important ; half a donut or your health?" Shade said.
* When snacking, don't eat from a large container (a big bowl of popcorn or a large bag of chips, for example). Instead, remove the amount you will eat and put the container away before you start.
* Eat at home. Studies show that meals consumed at home are usually lower in calories than restaurant meals.
* Don't eat in front of the television. Studies show that people eat larger amounts and less-nutritious foods in front of the tube.
* Eat smaller but more-frequent meals to avoid becoming ravenous between meals, which can lead to eating too much too fast.
* Include at least one non-starchy fruit or vegetable serving in every meal or snack.
* Choose whole grains over refined grains (whole-grain bread versus white bread, for example) because whole grains are more nutritious and satisfying.
* Avoid beverages with empty calories such as soft drinks and "juice drinks," which are mostly sugar.
* Avoid "fancy" blended, sweetened coffee drinks and instead choose a latte with nonfat or low-fat milk.
* Get plenty of sleep. Studies indicate that sleep loss increases the levels hormones such as cortisol, growth hormone and insulin, which can promote fat storage.

Crash diets and unsustainable exercise routines will not keep you at your desired weight for the long term.

3) WHEN YOU SIT DOWN
This is a critical point that sets the tone for the rest of the evening. It’s when much of our mindless munching happens, we can see and smell the food all around us, and we’re usually at our hungriest. If there were ever a perfect time to take charge of your experience, this is it. Get off on the right foot.

* Start by politely sending back those free munchies that show up right away. Bread baskets, rolls, tortilla chips or Chinese noodles can be bottomless pits of calories. Not to mention all of the butter that usually comes with them.
* If you need to munch a little to ward off hunger, ask the server if something else is available. They might have rye or whole wheat bread or rolls, melba toast or whole wheat crackers instead.
* Ask if there is a lower-fat alternative spread instead of the butter. If not, plain rolls aren’t so bad.
* Choose salsa over con queso or other cheesy dips.
* Order water right away and start sipping. Much of what we mistake as hunger is often merely thirst.
* A glass of spicy tomato juice or vegetable drink can bridge the hunger gap.
* Dessert menus, with huge, tasty close-ups of caloric landmines are on the table for a reason. Even if it’s a tabletop display, give it to your server.

1) CHOOSING A RESTAURANT
Eating healthy while eating out is all about one word: preparation. If you go into a restaurant cold, without any thought, you’ll be more susceptible to the creamy, the fatty and the gooey before you can prepare your defenses. Give yourself a chance by giving yourself options.

* Avoid “all-you-can-eat” places. More diets go here to die than any other type of restaurant.
* Choose a place with a varied menu. It’ll make it easier to find something healthy and to your taste.
* Don’t decide to eat out on the spur of the moment, if possible. It’s best to make plans and account for it during the rest of the day’s menu planning.
* Fish restaurants and restaurants with extensive salad bars usually have healthy options available.
* Try to avoid restaurants that promote “entertainment” eating, where the food is one of several attractions. This usually means the menu is choked full of fried, fatty and huge dishes.
* Any restaurant with a mascot is probably bad news.

Stormy-

You are absolutely right about mixing up your calorie intake to keep your body guessing! I tried that this past week and had the best week's loss yet! I was staying in the low 1200's (my allowance is 1200-1500) because I was actually terrified to go any higher for fear of gaining. But I faced my giants and I bumped things up to 1300-1400 and got really good results. I would greatly encourage anyone else to try the same thing. I'll probably be doing this on a regular basis every other week or so.

Hi Everyone

A change is as good as a rest. After 3 weeks of doing the same thing your body has started to adjust itself, mix it up. Don't eat only the same old foods and change the workout routine.

Stormy you should really be a motivational speaker dealing with weight loss. You are very inspiring on line I can't imagine what you would be like in person. Thanks for all the motivation and words of wisdom. You Rock!!!!!

8 Tips For Losing Weight and Keeping It Off
By Kathleen Goodwin, RD

5 Ways to Break a Weight Loss Plateau

If you've ever tried to lose fat for any sustained period of time - you may have hit a plateau. You have changed nothing, but suddenly the fat no longer disappears. The human body is incredibly adaptive, and will do its level best to maintain equilibrium (homeostasis).

The plateauing effect has to be the biggest motivation-killer there is. Unfortunately many popular diet books are strangely quiet on the issue -- I guess the concept doesn't sell well.

The best single word of advice is to make a change. Don't make the mistake of doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result (Ben Franklin's definition of insanity).

What changes can you make?

1. Zig-Zag Calorie Intake
Zig-zagging, or calorie cycling is the process of varying daily calorie intake, while maintaining the same weekly intake. Instead of consuming (for example) precisely 1800 calories each day - you can mix it up. Eat 1500 calories one day, and 2100 calories the next. This can be as simple as halving then doubling a portion size, or adding a post-workout shake into the plan. Just keep your body guessing.

2. Strength Training
If you are not doing this as part of your program or lifestyle, then it's time to start. Working your muscles will help to strengthen bone tissue, increase lean mass, and ultimately boost metabolic rate.

3. Change Your Exercise Routine
So you go walking a lot? Then try jogging, or swimming, or cycling -- anything that will change the way your body is working. If you are doing low intensity cardio work, then try some high intensity exercise (such as HIIT).

4. Alter Macro-nutrient Intake
Although it sounds complicated, once again, the idea is to change what you are eating. If (for example) you are eating a moderate diet that is higher in carbs - try eating less carbs and more protein. There is no need to get super-technical over the whole thing. If you have a carbohydrate snack every day at morning tea time - change it to a protein snack. Whatever you are doing consistently - try mixing it up a bit.

5. Change Meal Frequency
If you are eating three square meals a day - start adding snacks in between (which may mean reducing the portion size of the main meals). Eating often is an old and common style of eating - once again, you are trying to boost your metabolic rate.

I know all that - What else is there?
Some of us seem to have more adaptive bodies than others. I remember when I was eating a fairly rigid diet, having three strength training sessions per week, and as much as seven (often intense) cardio sessions a week. After 3-4 weeks - the fat simply stopped coming off. The frustration was enough to make me take my meal plans (stuck to the fridge), screw them up and throw them away in disgust. I was furious and disappointed. I felt that I was doing everything "right". So what was the answer?

Chill out and back off... I was becoming obsessional. I started eating more, and gradually reduced my cardio levels. I gave my body and mind a break. In the process I have learnt to eat more intuitively. Every person is unique, and we must learn how our individual body responds - and how to work with that.

TIP FOR THE DAY!

Instead of whole milk, switch to 1 percent. If you drink one 8-oz glass a day, you'll lose 5 lbs in a year.

Eight Ways to Jump Start Your Weight Loss

When you're trying to lose weight, the question isn't whether or not you'll hit a plateau, it's when. Plateaus are like bad weather on a long hike: it's inevitable that you'll run into it, but knowing that in advance won't make it one bit less frustrating or annoying when it happens. Cheer up! Since plateaus are as common as rain, we have a pretty good idea what to do about them. At least one of the following techniques should help you break through a plateau and start losing again.

1. Be a Calorie Detective
When clients tell me they've stopped losing weight, the first thing I ask is this: how many calories a day are you eating? Calories have a way of creeping up while we're not paying attention. Be brutally honest with yourself: how much are you eating? Using a food diary for a while is a great way to monitor this. And yes, sodas and alcoholic beverages count! A good calorie goal for dieters is your target weight times 10.

2. Change It Up
When you're not making gains in an exercise program you change your routine. Same holds true with your eating plan. Low-carbers could go higher carb for a few days, high-carbers might switch to a plan like Atkins or South Beach. Varying calorie intake may have a positive effect: If you're averaging 1,500 calories daily, try dropping to 1,200, going up to 2,000 and then dropping back to 1,500. You get the idea. Your body's gotten comfortable, so it's time to shake things up.

3. Try a Temporary Ban
Food sensitivities can cause weight gain and bloat, and the frustrating thing is that most of us don't always know which foods are the culprits. So play the odds. Highest on the list of "usual suspects" are grains (wheat in particular), dairy and sugar. Temporarily ban all three and see what happens.

4. Take Your Workout Up a Notch
Forget the "fat burning zone." High intensity intervals -- 30 to 60 seconds -- are the wave of the future. If you're accustomed to level three on your cardio machine, ramp it up to level 6 for a minute then slow down, catch your breath and repeat. Ever see a sprinter with love handles? Training like a sprinter will lower your body fat faster than any technique I know of, plus it'll boost your metabolism and lower your weight.

5. Strength Training
If you're not strength training, start now. And if you are, ramp it up a notch. Muscle is your greatest ally in breaking a plateau. Unfortunately many women train with weights too light to produce the metabolic boost they need. Don't be afraid of heavier weights. They should be heavy enough that you can only do between 8 and 12 reps.

6. Up Your Protein
Studies show that higher protein diets make it easier to lose fat. Protein boosts the metabolism (in one study as much as 100 percent for 24 hours), and increases satiety, making it more likely that you won't overeat. A higher protein diet could be just what you need to break that plateau.

7. Try a Detox
Unsupervised fasting is a really bad idea, but the idea of giving your system a rest makes sense. Try a "smart fast" of nothing but fruits and vegetables for a couple of days. The added fiber is always helpful, and the massive amount of nutrients and phytochemicals is like "spring cleaning" for your metabolism.

8. Take Inventory
Other things besides diet and exercise could be stalling your weight loss, such as stress, lack of sleep or medication. Take a look at what else is going on in your life that might need attention. Sometimes when you clean up the problems in one area of your life, problems in other areas just naturally take care of themselves.

*EXCELLENT READING AND SO TRUE!

EXCUSES PEOPLE MAKE!

Losing weight is not easy. It requires planning and perseverance. Along your weight loss journey, you will face many obstacles. The biggest obstacles you will face are your own excuses. The funny thing about excuses is that none of them have any merit. If you want to achieve your weight loss goals, you are going to have to stop making excuses and start making changes. To help you, here is a list of some common excuses people use to not lose weight and the reasons they do not have any merit.

I have been overweight my entire life.

You have been eating too much your entire life. That is not an excuse. That is a problem. Start eating less today and you will spend the rest of your life at a healthy weight.

Everyone in my family is overweight.

So you are not alone in your overeating. You will all be sicker and die earlier than you are supposed to. I challenge you to be the first to lose weight and keep it off. This will show everyone else in the family that they could lose weight also.

I have a slow metabolism.

A slow metabolism does not make you overweight. A slow metabolism makes it easier for you to gain weight and harder for you to lose weight. Blame your genetics and get over it. Eat less, lose weight and get on with your life. You should eat smaller meals more frequently to increase your metabolism. You should also try eating more lean protein and try resistance training to build more muscle.

I have hypothyroid. / I am post-menopausal. / I am old.

People with hypothyroidism, post-menopausal women and the elderly have slower metabolisms than younger and healthier people. That is not an excuse. Eat less and you will lose weight.

I have tried every diet. / Diets do not work for me. / I can't stay on a diet.

Most popular diets work. If you do not lose weight or if you gain the weight back, it's because you did not follow the diet. The diet did not fail you. You failed yourself. You must make a permanent decrease in your calorie intake. You must be consistent if you want to get the weight off and keep it off. You can do it. Focus on your personal long-term goals and believe in yourself.

It is really easy to sit down and make excuses for why you have not lost the weight you want to lose. It would be harder but more productive to stop making excuses and start strategizing solutions to help you drop the pounds and keep them off.

Here is a funny story for all of you!! My dogs are helping me with my trigger eating!!! My daughter calls today and says "MOM WE HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU" I knew she was calling about the two rascals. My boy dog has figured out how to pop the pantry open that contains the snacks. A week ago he polished off the chips ahoy package which was full. Today both ate fruit snacks, granola bars, bags of unpopped popcorn, sunflower seeds, tore the plastic bags out of the lower part and scattered all of the above around the kitchen. THEY ATE ALL MY TRIGGERS hahaha. Thank you Cody and Dusty.

Should I be counting the green tea I drink as part of my water intake? I do not add anything to it, just water and the tea bag. I have not been, but it would really jump my water intake up a lot if I did.

Get a Handle on Emotional Eating
The Secret Sabotage of Your Program
-- By Zach Van Hart, Staff Writer
SparkPeople Sponsors help keep the site free!

Ever been angry or upset one minute and then on your couch eating the next, unable to remember why you started eating or how long you had spent munching? If so, then you have entered the world of emotional eating. It’s something than can happen to anyone, and one of the most common dieting obstacles out there.

Emotional eating at its best passes after a few minutes. At its worst, it can take over your life and cause you to eat uncontrollably for extended periods of time. And according to nutritional experts, 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. So don’t worry, if you suffer from emotional eating, you are not alone.

People often eat to relieve stress or to get something off their minds. The kicker is that stress, and the insulin jump that goes with it, may actually cause you to crave high sugar, high carbohydrate foods – foods that go straight to your waistline and cause you even more stress.

Rather than munching, it's better to develop new skills for dealing with boredom, self-esteem issues and stress. Try to pinpoint the major reasons for your stress or unpleasant emotions, and see how you can turn the tide. Here are a few suggestions to combat your emotions:

* Get your trigger foods out of the house, get your crutch foods out of arms' reach
* Go for a walk or jog. Physical activity relieves stress.
* Do deep breathing and relaxation exercises
* Keep a reminder of your goal handy
* Talk to a friend
* Visit and post on the support message boards
* Surround yourself with positive reinforcers, like pictures and people
* Keep a journal that includes your best personal accomplishments
* Track your eating patterns, including when and why you pick up food.

If you still seem to come back to food when your emotions get the best of you, you can at least be prepared. Eating large amounts of snacks is not a good thing. But if you eat low calorie foods, it’s not so bad. So stock the fridge with healthy alternatives--foods that have good nutritious value and are smaller in size. Here are a few food suggestions to keep within arms' reach:

* Apple or orange slices
* Carrot sticks
* Banana
* Broccoli
* Whole wheat toast
* Bran muffin
* Fruit smoothie
* Applesauce

How much water do you consume on a daily basis?

The human body is made up of 75% water; our bodies cannot store water itself so you need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Our bodies can survive without food for a number of weeks but only a couple of days without water.

You cannot drink too much water as our body rids itself of the excess through urinating. The best indication to tell if you are drinking enough water is the colour of your urine, if there is any amount of colour in it then you seriously need to up your water intake.

Water helps our bodies to flush out the toxins, which in turn helps our bodies with cell reproduction. The more water we drink the more our bodies will be able to purify itself.

By drinking plenty of water you will notice dramatic changes in your skin tone and elasticity, a visible reduction in the cellulite on your body, if you have any and yes weight loss.

Increasing your intake of water will help to naturally speed up your metabolism which is one of the main keys to weight loss.

Not enough water will slow down your metabolic rate and you will find it harder to lose weight. You will also notice that you suffer with water retention, using drugs to eliminate water from your system is not the way, drinking more water throughout the day will help to stabilize this.

Lets plan our 8 glasses, try not to look at drinking water as a huge effort, spread you water throughout the day, keep a water bottle close to you so you can have a drink at your desk or whilst you in the car.

* Drink a glass of water immediately after you wake in the morning before you eat or drink any thing else.
* Drink a glass of water mid-morning, water has no calories so really if you can drink another one go for it.
* Drink a glass of water before lunch this will help to suppress your appetite.
* Drink a glass of water mid-afternoon before your snack, an apple or piece of fruit would be the best snack choice.
* Another glass of water whilst preparing dinner and another one 10 minutes before you sit down to eat.
* Drink a glass of water about an hour before bed, so it won't disturb your sleep by getting up through the night to go to the toilet.

Drinking water before meals helps the digestion process which speeds up the rate at which your body can use the nutrition from your food as energy.

Remember if you wait for your body to tell you that it needs a drink by you feeling thirsty, then your body has already gone into dehydration.

You thought it would never happen to you, but it did. You've put on a few pounds and now you've got that ugly, flapping skin underneath your arms. Ugh. Every time you lift your arm to wave hi to someone the skin under your arm flaps. Every time you reach to pick up something the skin under your arm wiggles. It's embarrassing.

No one plans to have flabby arms, it just happens sometimes - especially to women. You see, we tend to gain weight in our thighs, hips and yes, our arms. Fat just settles in and makes itself at home in those areas. It's not easy to get rid of, but there are exercises to firm up flabby underarms that are quite effective.

3 Best Exercises for Flabby Arms

Bicep Curls

Get yourself a good, strong resistance band with handles for this exercise. Resistance bands can give you the same kind of strength training workout that fancy gym equipment does for only a fraction of the cost. To begin, stand in the middle of the band while clutching both handles. Your natural weight provides resistance. Keeping your elbows close to your sides, flex your arms up until you bring the band to shoulder level. Flex back down to the original position. Do this 10 times.

Pushups

Pushups are a great way to use the natural weight of your body to tone up your arms. Instead of regular pushups, let's do a modified version, which is easier on the body. Get down on the floor and carefully extend your body out, holding your chest up with your arms. Bend your knees up so that your legs are slightly up in the air. Now push down towards the floor slowly. Hold for a second. Slowly lift yourself back up. Do this 10 times.

Lateral Raises

You'll need 5-pound dumbbell weights for this exercise. Stand with your feet apart and shoulders slightly hunched. Hold a weight in each hand with your arms down by your side. Slightly bend your elbows and raise the weights out to your sides until both arms are parallel to the floor. Slowly lower your arms back to the original position. Do this 10 times.

The above exercises will do a nice job of toning your arm muscles. BUT, you cannot just stop there and expect your flabby arms to disappear. You see, your newly toned arms will be hidden from sight by all that fat that surrounds them. Arm exercises alone won't get rid of this fat.

You need to make a serious commitment to getting rid most of the excess fat that's being stored right now in your body - including your arms. This means you'll need to follow a proper diet and exercise program that will target fat so that it melts away, and all that's left to see is your beautifully toned arms and body.

1. EAT BREAKFAST

During long periods without food your metabolism goes into starve mode, this of course includes when you sleep. The only way to come out of starve mode and restart your metabolism is to start eating and this is why breakfast is such an important meal and should never be skipped. It also makes binging less likely.

2. EATING 5-6 SMALL MEALS A DAY

As I have already stated going for long periods without food sends your metabolism into starve mode. Eating regularly will prevent this and keep your metabolism working continuously.

3. STRENGTH TRAINING

Strength training has two benefits, firstly it creates more muscle which increases the metabolism rate. Secondly immediately after strength training for a period of anything up to 12 hours your metabolism will work at a faster level.

4. EAT PROTEIN

Protein also works in two ways. First you burn more calories digesting protein than you do other food types such as carbohydrates. Secondly protein is helpful because it makes us feel fuller which makes snacking between meals less likely.
