Before my immodium allergy, yes, it would have waaay to potent of an effect! I find that the BRAND pepto TABLETS are better than the liquid (and generic). I have it to a science. Two or three tabs for when I know I need extra protection, but one tab if I really want to eat a food that I know is going to tear me up and I want to lessen the effects. The only thing to make sure of with pepto is that you should not be taking it in conjuction with any aspirin, blood thinners or other anti inflammatory medications except for the here and there occasion without checking with your doctor. Pepto is contraindicated in those cases, so be mindful. I am on mobic and other medications that I need to be careful, so I save my pepto "blocks" for the times I really need them which is about 1-2 times a month on average.

Some people can take pepto without any worries, but I just want to throw it out there because a lot of us with IBS also have comorbid conditions as a result or along with it.

Imodium does the same to me! I try not to take it at all because of that.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

That Pepto or something similar sounds like maybe it would be better than the Immodium at times. The Immodium tends to turn me the opposite way for a couple of days, which isn't all that helpful. Then the D will hit suddenly again at the most inopportune time. I used to take Rolaids, the entire tube, to try to make it through my time at work for quite a while.

Ive had IBS for about 15 years, but since I got sick in 2010 when my gallbladder "broke" and went lactose intolerant and then had it removed in 2011, I have been way worse. In the time since, I have found that I have slowly been having issues with other short chain sugars, mostly sorbitol, but basically in the last month am at the realization I need to contact a dietitian to assist in a FODMAP elimination diet to eliminate my symptoms, but even still.... that probably wont get rid of having to go upwords of 10 times a day. At this point, I am used to it. My family knows my live revolves around a toilet, as do my close friends and most coworkers. I just make a joke out of it (Im great at self-depreciating humor) and no one cares if I take 6 extra breaks to ensure I dont have an accident.... as long as my jokes are funny enough. I also live by the rule if you cant laugh at yourself then life isnt worth living. Especially with IBS. If I couldnt laugh about it, I don't think there would be enough happy pills in the world.

The one thing I do when I have to make sure I dont need a bathroom is take my pre-emptive strike dose of pepto bismol. I am allergic to immodium (yep, lucky me!) so the weak stuff is all I get. In combination with water only, I am able to get through whatever I have to do for nearly a full day.

There are a lot of medications that can be prescribed by gastroenterologists if you have IBS-D or IBS-C and not like me where it likes to be D for several weeks until I think of scheduling an appointment and then it magically reverses for a week..lol.

Make the most of your IBS... go buy a Lysol clip on bowl cleaner and then know that at least every time you go you are cleaning the toilet as well.... See... an upside!

I still have problems getting out of the house, but not so much from the IBS as just from the nerve damage I had during radiation therapy. But every time I leave the house I start having to go.

I am so thankful for this team!! I've been reading this thread and feeling much in common with you ladies!! I can't tell you how many times I have had to ask my husband to find the closest place, which is extremely stressful for him as well as me!! Then there is the knowledge I have, not of the stores in general, but WHERE THE BATHROOM IS!! What's really bad is finding a store, but it not having a public bathroom!! I just hate having IBS, as the stress makes it worse, one way or another!! I have had this for long enough to know there's not really anything I can do to prevent it, just deal with it when it happens and know it's all I can do. Fortunately it doesn't happen nearly as much as it could, so there's always hope!! I wish you all well, and may you have the peace you all deserve so much!!! emoticon

Mine lately has been from a bad cold. The cold has been keeping me home, so not as much a problem with the IBS and going out. I guess that the cold causes stress which will cause IBS problems.

Sorry to hear you are having problems with the blockage. Hope it gets resolved soon and permanent.

Good to know about the metformin. My husband was having terrible problems until they took him off a few month's ago.

I had surgery for a bowel-obstruction in 2012. (My surgereon said it was from stress. )I had attacks from obstruction from 2005-2012.. After syrgery was better. Justt admitted for bowel-obstruction the beginning of April. G.I. Dr. Said it's not from stress. ( i don't believe him)
Getting tests, etc. was diagnosed w/ IBS along time ago.
Coffee helps me. Right now w/ stomach pain got to watch what I eat, but usually stress, makes it worse.
It's not easy. Hang in there!

Mine lately has been connected to my stress level as well as my water intake and foods I eat. If I eat junky food and don't drink enough water, I definitely struggle to go. Stress is stress. I deal with it as I can, which unfortunately is often via food.

My bf just seems to have problems if he eats too much fat or greasy foods. He said it is because he had his gallbladder removed, that it just seems to go right through him. So after he eats some thing like that he is usually making a trip to the restroom right after. Some times it hits him in the middle of dinner too.

Mine usually just happens when I get under too much stress, like on a job, or money problems, or family issues or such. But I also have the nervous bladder too, so I usually have to deal with it more than my IBS-mixed.

My son has it, and I am thinking my daughter does now too. Both love to eat carbs and friend foods and stuff like that. They are not really sweet eaters, but give them fries or other carbs. Heck, give them to me and I eat them. Then I suffer.

So sorry we have this issue, but so good to know I'm not alone. Even when my husband has had to deal with the aftermath for so many years and still just doesn't get why I can't drop everything and go places or when I have to cancel last minute.

I understand your dilemma Leggsmalon. I don't have any friends or family with IBS and they can't understand why I can't be cured. My Mom is constantly telling me I am falling apart. I want to tell her she is part of the stress sometimes, but I wouldn't hurt her feelings that way.

I simply just don't eat until I return home. It's the only way I can leave my house without an accident happening. Really embarrassing, not to mention doubling over in agony for an hour.

When I was working I would have to drive myself to many of the farther stores to work in (did inventory) because I never knew when I would have to stop. Had to one time on the way back from a west slope store and that was really embarrassing. The driver of the van didn't want to stop. It didn't bother my folks when I would tell them I had to stop somewhere, but it embarrasses me and it especially embarrasses me when I have to ask people outside family (or even cousins) to stop and the first place they can. I even have a little portable potty in the back of my truck (that I can't get to right now) for emergencies.

Didn't used to. Now that I am not taking metformin I have been able to get out more. Have even been able to walk the dog when it was warm and not blowing so hard it would knock us over. I know certain places I can stop and find their restroom in a hurry, though that doesn't always work. If I am on my way downtown there is a police station I will hit. Closer to home a couple of grocery stores. Know where most of the fast food joints are (not for food, but for restrooms) and am always on the lookout for the gas stations. I will hit the bathroom at home before I leave 4 times before I leave the house. It is really a pain having the problems, though, for sure.
