I also have a portapotty. Unfortunately, it is in the back of a pickup and right now I have trouble getting in the back of the pickup. Maybe I should have bought a van the last time when I got my truck.

Sounds like you are in a bad place - I have IBS d - constant daily episodes - here is what I have found out from my experionce the last 40 years (started IBS when I was 20 and in college) 1) go to doctor and get Bentyl - it will decrease cramps/pain - does not control d for me but pain is way less 2) Imodium - get it cheap at Walmart by buying generic brand - it help with frequent d - eat soluble fiber to keep from getting constipated. 3) get a porta potty and put in closet for emergency if brother is in bathroom - also I bought a cargo van and I keep a porta potty in it for travel emergencies. 4) try an elimination diet - eat normally safe foods for a week then start adding possible trigger foods one at a time and see what happens - safe foods are normally white bread, white pasta, potatoes, bananas, grilled chicken. Add dairy - see what happens - then add red meat, then add vegies, then add fruit, if you get d when you add something then that is probably a trigger food and you need to limit your intake of it. Sorry you have to go through this I am hoping your can find some relief soon. take care.
So far the only food I have found that stirs up my IBS is tomatoes. (shucks!!) For me, stress is the big motivator in 99% of my IBS spells and my job is deadline driven and stressful. I hope if I get back on the IBS diet and avoid seeds, etc. the diverticulits will stay calm.
I can understand the "no seeds, nuts, etc." but a list of what you can eat that doesn't stir up your IBS is hard to find. There are lists that say you can't eat bread, can't drink milk, etc., but that doesn't hold for everyone. If you start with what you have been able to eat then you could probably make your own list. I know that isn't too easy to do because I usually can't figure it out. I will have something that I have been able to eat for a long time and suddenly I get a bad IBS attack. So far I haven't gotten diverticulitis, fortunately. I hope that yours clears up soon.
I use OTC Align per doctor's suggestion and it has helped reduce the number of IBS spells. However, last week I was thrown a curve ball....was having problems so went to the dr. She said I was having a severe spell of diverticulitis. Now what? Ok....no seeds, nuts, popcorn, etc, etc.....I would rather hear what I CAN eat.......Is there somewhere I can find a list of good things to eat with diverticulitis that won't "stir up" my IBS??? Help!!
I'm not sure what it was that the papaya were supposed to do. And I forgot I was thinking of picking some up today.
I was wondering if it could be something else causing your problem right now besides the IBS. Just thinking that the GI doc told me that the intestines "sleep" at night, so they shouldn't be cramping like that and wake you up if you are sleeping. But I guess it can also be the IBS if it is getting too bad.

So sorry you're going through this... Maybe your doctor can prescribe something to help? My GI doc prescribed OTC pro-biotic Align. Remember, as awful as flare ups are, they will come to an end, so hang in there and try not to get too discouraged.
Just wondering, you described your brother as a bathroom hog, stating he spends tons of time in the BR himself. Any way that he has IBS, too? Just a thought!

My stomach is rumbling now... Ugh. I'm, like, afraid to go to sleep because when I wake up, it'll be with cramps.. Or, maybe not? Maybe I can cross my fingers that it'll ease up long enough for me to enjoy tomorrow, at least... Right?
I am always forgetting what helped me when I was working several years ago, but it might help your situation (not with the brother, though). I was having the diarrhea problem for about 2 weeks straight at the time and went to the Vitamin Cottage. They suggested papaya enzyme tablets and they helped a lot. When I remember I will get those, but I am so forgetful that I don't have them now. Whenever I remember them and actually take them they seem to help. Maybe I can remember and get some tomorrow.
Just a thought. If I was having that much trouble I would not be able to even leave the house or go outside. I hope that you can get some relief soon.
I haven't really been on SP in awhile, and I don't come on this board all that often either, but I'm just feeling really blah. I kind of need to rant more than anything. I hope that's okay?
I haven't had a bad IBS flare up in a number of years. I've had minor ones, but never bad. The last 5 days, I've had a bad flare up. I wake up anywhere from 2am-10am (I sleep late because not working right now) with terrible cramps and I end up having diarrhea. Then, over the course of the morning/afternoon, I end up running several more times. And this has been going on for days.
To add insult to injury? My brother just moved home from Florida because he's in transition, looking for a new apartment and starting a new job. We share a bathroom... And he's a bathroom hog.. And sometimes I need to sit in there for up to 30 minutes at a time, 2-5 times a day.... It's bad enough being young and having such bad stomach issues (I was 17 or 18 when diagnosed, 24 now - although having IBS at any age sucks, don't get me wrong) but to have to worry about my brother needing the bathroom while I'm in there, or right after me? And he ALWAYS seems to need it as soon as I go in. Like, clockwork. I go in, and 5 minutes later I hear him come out, pause outside the door, and go back to his room. And sometimes, if I'm in there awhile, he does it twice more to see if I'm done. And WORSE, STILL, is our toilets are old and don't have a lot of water pressure, so sometimes I need to flush two or three times, and then I'm in there so many times....
Okay, rant done. Sorry guys. I just had to share with people who understood the frustrations.
PS: I'm going into the city with my parents tomorrow to do brunch for Father's Day... THAT should be interesting :( I don't know how I'm gonna get through the morning, eating and then visiting with my brother (different brother) at his apartment for the morning... He has a studio so if I need to go, everyone will hear/smell... Ugh! I'm gonna go cry now... Thanks again for listening to me rant.
