Update: After a few tests, including a colonoscopy, I have been (officially) diagnosed with IBS. My GI, as well as the APRN who met with me, say I have all of the "classic symptoms" of IBS: diarrhea/constipation, incomplete BMs, gas/bloating and lower abdominal discomfort. At the moment, my symptoms have almost entirely cleared up, but wow!, a month or so ago I felt just terrible... I haven't made too many adjustments in recent weeks (so I'm not sure what brought about the positive change), I just started taking a probiotic (Align), monitoring my fiber intake (I don't want too little OR too much), and experiencing a lot less stress. :) At any rate, I feel like a different person now! (Knock on wood!)

As for the burning in my upper abdomen (front, bottom of rib cage) and upper back pain, it's all gone away (smile) with Zegerid daily- plus periodic Tums. (I take Zegerid in the evening PRN/as needed b/c I have "Silent Reflux.") Without a recent endoscopy (and looking at my stomach, etc.), it's uncertain to know for sure if the (upper abdominal) burning/pain was related to my reflux (an ulcer?), had to do with my IBS (severe gas?), or was something totally different like gastritis. (Boy it burned!!) But it's gone now, so I'm very pleased; I can finally sleep at night! And I'm no longer afraid to eat for fear of worsening my symptoms. (Sigh...)

Anyway, many thanks for all of the feedback and support while awaiting a formal diagnosis. Now I'm just waiting to see how this "condition" (IBS) works as I'm new to it all. I'm feeling good at the moment, but I'm also wondering if & when I'll experience another "flare up." xoxo

She is hoping that the diet and some supplement she has ordered will take care of it before she has to resort to surgery. I hope so, too. She is having so many problems with health. I really feel for her. I am always ending up feeling sorry for myself (mostly because of the IBS problems and nerve damage from radiation), but I think my friend has more problems.

That is what my friend was going through. She was having problems in the first place with all the meds that they had her on, so she weaned off of them and started throwing up every time she ate, plus pain that she said radiated to her back. She has gallstones and an inflamed liver from the gallstones. She is on a very restricted diet now that she found online since she hasn't seen the doctor yet.

I had the same thing happen 5 years ago. I was throwing up, going to the bathroom, not going to the bathroom along with that radiating pain in my chest that went into my back. My general practioner kept telling me that I had the flu and it was burning left from that. Finally I saw a gastroenterologist and had an endoscopy and colonscopy. I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, gastritis, severe inflammation through my entire digestive tract. Now I am diagnosed with GERD and IBS. Hoping that the doc can find something that works for you. I now take daily meds that help regulate them.

You are so right, Monique! I will be sure to advocate for myself until I'm feeling better.

I will also read the article that you've suggested...

I will hope for relief for you soon.

If you get a diagnosis for IBS, read "A New IBS Solution" by Mark Pimentel. As a matter of fact, read it now if you can. IBS, as far as I am concerned, is not a diagnosis. It is a name doctors give to a group of symptoms that they have no answer for.

Also, don't pin all your hopes on an answer from the colonoscopy. I hope you get one but I would hate to have you be disappointed. When a doctor tells me they are sure of something now, I immediately am suspicious. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy the same day. They found a hiatal hernia, general irritation, scarring from reflux, a polyp, diverticulitis and not one of those things was causing my pain. It took another month after those tests to finally get a diagnosis.

So, question. Insist that they test for what YOU want to be tested for and don't take no for an answer. It is far to easy for doctors to say, "You have IBS. This is what your life is going to be. Sorry, learn to deal with it." No one will advocate for you but you. emoticon

I had my annual OB/GYN exam this morning (coincidentally), so I told my doc what's been going on... He, like my PCP, feel that I have inflammation somewhere along my GI track (b/c of blood test results, my chief complaint of "burn" and abdominal discomfort). He said the colonoscopy should determine what's going on, whether it's IBS, collitis, diverticulitis- whatever. He did say that it's important that my GI send the colonoscopy results to him b/c many times GI issues can lead to GYN issues of some sort...
I am still planning on asking about the breath test though...
I never thought I'd look forward to a colonoscopy, but when feeling miserable, you just want answers. I'm just looking forward to treatment (of whatever sort) and, eventualy, relief (sigh!)...
Thanks again for all of the feedback; knowing that others can relate in some way, shape or form is SO comforting...
Very glad someone created Team IBS! (Lol.)

As far as I know, the only way to diagnose it is with the breath test or a specific biopsy sort of thing but the endoscopy is the small intestines. So I don't believe a colonoscopy would work for it.

I wanted to clarify, my pain has almost always been on my right side, not left but it still sounds so similar! I am wishing you relief and hope that they can get the breath test done for you. It really is an easy test. Drink a little sugar drink and then breath in a tube every 15 minutes for several hours. My test lasted 5 hours but I have heard of others only taking 3. I was thankful that my doctor went to 5 hours because mine wouldn't have shown up in a 3 hour test. Mine didn't show up until the last half hour. So...very simple. Worst thing about it is the length.

I've been getting 'scoped' every year for 20 years and I did not know that the small intestine was ever looked at. I always wondered about that but always forget to ask the Dr.

Ashley, I don't know about that small intestine bacteria thing (SIBO?), but I think to see inside the small intestine they have to do an endoscopy instead of a colonoscopy. I had to have both for them to check both large and small (thankfully at the same appointment when I was out, so I didn't have to go through all that prep again).

I hope they can find out what it is and give you some relief. I know that for me nothing will ever work and I won't ever be able to go back to work. They can't find the cause and the radiation therapy has done too much nerve damage.

Monique,
Thank you so much for writing (twice)! You've been a wonderful SP friend! :) I really appreciate it as I've been so worried, thinking the worst. I have my colonoscopy on 4/16 and I will ask about the possibility of the Small Intestines Bacterial Overgrowth as well. (I know that they did a breath test with you; I wonder if they would also be able to catch it with a colonoscopy?). My doc recommended Align daily, but not sure if this a great idea until they know for sure what's troubling me. I've been burping a bit, but not too bad. The gurgling is crazy at times- sometimes when my tummy's full and sometimes when it's not, no real rhyme or reason. And, yes, it can be so loud! I think I feel worse at night and when I first wake up; was this the case with you?
My doc also recommended Zegerid at night until my colonoscopy is done. I will definitely pick up some Gas-X. I'm willing to try anything to "ease" the burn!
My stool has been a bit more solid lately and more "normal" in color; it had been yellow. Yuck and I know: TMI! (Sorry)
So glad that you re feeling better and found relief! I hope to have the same success soon! :)
Will keep you posted! :) Ashley

Yes, my pain was up that high. It was primarily upper left. IN fact they began the diagnosing process assuming gallbladder. So it was always, constant on left upper. From directly below my ribcage in the center of my abdomen, followed my ribcage down all the way down to my waist on the left and often would radiate around towards my back. Not so much upper back for me. It would sometimes be both sides, sometimes just one but if it was just one it was almost always on the left.

I suddenly went from someone who was not a gassy person at all to burping all the time. My stomach gurgled like mad! It was embarrassing a couple times when I was at a business meeting, etc.

I took some probiotics before they diagnosed me and it gave me a bit of relief but in the long run, the probiotics was not a good choice for me. Also, when the burning on my side(s) got intense, I would use gas-X tabs and it did often help. I also used metamucil daily to help bulk up my stool so that my body could more effectively eliminate it. That also helped. Everything was incremental in terms of lessening the pain until I got the final diagnosis and then the antibiotics. It took two rounds before I had any lasting relief but it did happen. Now I have to change my diet because I do believe that the overgrowth has caused an intolerance to gluten. (apparently something that is not common with a bacterial overgrowth-new food sensitivities)

Wishing you the best of luck!
Monique

Thank you so much ladies for all of the feedback. I really do appreciate it! I woke up this morning with pain on the left side, from the bottom of my rib cage (where it "angles") down to my left hip. It's not excruciating pain where I'm double-over, but I really am quite sore and it's constant. Like I mentioned yesterday, I also have this "burning" feeling between the bottom of my rib cage down to right below my belly button as well, which goes straight through to my upper back (causing pain there, too!). Mostly I feel it on my left side, but sometimes all the way to my right. It's terrible... And scary. (Note: I will never google my symptoms again as this has only added to my anxiety!) I'm definitely going to ask my GI, who I met with on Monday (and who ordered a colonoscopy b/c of the pain and change in bathroom habits), about the possibility of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. (I left a message this morning and am awaiting a return call.) Calipidgious, were your symptoms as high as mine- near your stomach? I'm also going to ask about the possibility of an ulcer somewhere. I'm not throwing up and don't have nausea, which I know are signs of an ulcer, but I'm definitely feeling a burning sensation.
I'm wondering what will give me some relief until this situation is resolved... Any ideas? Again, I asked the GI when I called this morning b/c I hate feeling this way.
You guys really are wonderful! Thanks for the support!!!

I would ask my doctor to do a breath test to check for bacterial overgrowth. The pain and burning, burping and gas, gurgling but not necessarily from having diarrhea, etc. Very familiar to what I was going through and I was finally diagnosed with Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. If it comes back negative, no biggie but if it comes back positive, at least you'll have a direction to move in.

I have problems with gas that will cause pain to radiate. If it isn't too bad it might be the lower abdomen or the upper abdomen and rib area. If it gets bad it will give all the symptoms of a heart attack with severe chest pain and pain in both arms that gets really bad. One time it started at the back of my neck and my shoulder, then went into my jaw and down my arm. I had read that those were symptoms of a heart attack in women and the neck/jaw were new, so I ended up at the ER. They didn't find anything and ignored me, so I figure it was just the gas again or else it was my gall bladder, which didn't show anything on the blood tests.

Your radiating pain might be something like that. But I'd check with the doc and not figure from my crazy symptoms.

Oh, I will also get burning, but usually a little lower, closer to my waist and maybe slightly above. Burning will usually result in "D" after a while. I have had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and they didn't find anything wrong.

My doc is in the process of diagnosing me. I have a colonoscopy scheduled in two weeks. I find that my upper abdomen hurts as well as my upper back. (My doc says pain "radiates".) Some days I go to the bathroom 5-6 times by lunch (not always loose; always different though- even the color!) and other days I don't go at all. Some days, I have gas and/or burp, other days not as much. My lower abdomen doesn't hurt a lot, but I do find that I experience some discomfort, sometimes on the left side, sometimes on the right, sometimes right in the middle. My tummy gurgles a lot although not always before diarrhea. My doc think it's a "functional" problem/condition such as IBS. I haven't found any connections to specific foods. I feel this way everyday on and off. Does this sound familiar to any of you? Any thoughts/feedback would be much appreciated!
