I'm usually able to control my symptoms by managing my diet and trigger foods, but a few months ago I was really sluggish and bloated though not specifically constipated. I ended up taking a probiotic supplement for a month and it did wonders for me. I am currently repeating it after having had a cold for about 3 weeks and was having the same symptoms.

While I did not consult my doctor, it might be something to ask yours since this might not be a good choice for you given your longer history.

The more you step out of your comfort zone, the larger it gets.

Have had IBS with severe constipation for 25 years now. I have never used stool softeners or laxatives - only fiber supplements, lots of water, lots of suffering. Now all those years of not doing anything for the constipation have left me with weakened bowel and colon walls and unable to go without using something.

My doctor first suggested Magnesium which allowed me to have small movements every day but still very very hard and had to strain despite drinking up to 12 cups water per day and fiber supplement. A month ago my doctor and gastro agreed that daily doses of Miralax was the only alternative. I spoke to the pharmacist and he agreed. I'm so glad I took all the advice as it has made a huge difference in my life.

Taking laxatives without medical advice is not a good idea, but on advice from your doctor, when there are no alternatives, Miralax is a safe effective laxative that has not been shown to cause dependance like others do.

Hope this helps

Dang, I had a big ole reply and for some reason it glitched on me. So, here's the short version. Never settle for just having to live with a condition. See a specialist if you can and if you don't like their resolution, go to a different one. Ask around your area for the best in that field to make sure you're getting the best care. IBS is a condition that can be controlled. Once you know the right combination for your body, you'll be amazed at how much better you feel. emoticon

I don't go to a specialist for it & I have asked Doctors in the past...only advice they have is to get off the laxatives & eat more fiber...I eat a very healthy diet, no meat or chicken, only occasional fish. Lots of veggiies & salads, flax & chia seeds daily. Just something I have to live with , I guess...

Have you asked your GI for other solutions? I'm sorry I can't be of more help. My issue is the exact opposite. I've definitely found a correlation to animal products and my IBS/Ulcerative Colitis/Allergies if that helps any.

I know that this is true...I am a perfect example of it. I have taken "something" for so many years now, that I am unable to go if I don't. Right now I am taking a magnesium one, stool softner on occasion & prune juice & even with all that, It is not optimum. I wish I knew the answer, but guess I have really messed myself up. I do have to say, it has been a life long problem, since childhood, I have been this way!

When my dad was in the hospital, they said that if your body gets used to laxatives, it can cause issues to the point where your body needs you to take a laxative in order to have a BM. Have you tried upping your fiber and drinking more water? Or maybe using a stool softener instead of a laxative?

I was taking it everyday, but then I found actual directions, and got scared off so now I take it about once a week for 3 or 4 days until things get going again, take benefiber for other days. I plan on talking to my GI this summer and finding out what he thinks, butI hope to continue taking it because it does work for me!!!

My gastroenterologist suggested I use Miralax when the IBS has me constipated. I mix a capful into my water. If I don't have a BM within 12 hours, I take another dose. Usually works and I haven't had the trouble with bloating. Hope you find something that works for you.

I have been using Miralax for about 6 years. I dont measure but use roughly 2-3 tsp in warm water when I first get up, or I mix it in any other beverage that I am having, coffee etc.Its the only thing that works for me .I have been told by a Dr. and a nurse practitioner that it was okay for me to take every day.I dont get bloating or cramps but if I miss a day or 2 then I suffer for it. When first starting with it it takes about 3-5 days to get things going.

I tried it a long time ago and I didn't like it. It also made me bloat so I quit taking it.

On the drugs.com website here is what it says...

do not take more than directed unless advised by your doctor
adults and children 17 years of age and older:
stir and dissolve one packet of powder (17 g) in any 4 to 8 ounces of beverage (cold, hot or room temperature) then drink
use once a day
use no more than 7 days
children 16 years of age or under: ask a doctor

If you haven't taken it before it can cause bloating and cramps.

For those of you who use this for constipation, how do you take it? Like what do you mix it with & how much & how often? I really need to find something that will work!
