I also alternate between d and c with my IBS. I am currently dealing with being constipated and would kill to have a bm once a day. Hopefully the stool collection will give you some answers.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

Socialworkgeny,
I just had to go thru the stool collection procedure, yeah its not fun but I am hoping it tells my dr why I am in a constant state of d. I also had an ultrasound on my gall bladder yesterday too so maybe there is part of my problem. I have the weekend here to wait to find out. whippeee!
I hope your woes are better by the time I have responded to this and you are back out having a lot of fun!

I can tell you that since my IBS switched from D to C about 8-10 years ago, I only have a BM about 1X/week. Even if I have a good week, that might mean 2 times in a week. I know that's not 'normal' but what is normal? I never had one every day, even when I had D.

thanks for replying to me and my personal questions. ive been outta the hospital for the 3rd time early feb and the severe diarrhea didnt kick in until about two weeks ago. yes, they did pump me full of antibiotics and i was there for a week but i wouldnt think it would surface 3 weeks later. my bowels r finally moving again so i will do the stool specimens but i think whatever infection or what was going on is gone now. but this has been one roller coaster ride. thanks again.

Dear SocialworkGenie, I think your doc is wrong. Not everyone has a daily movement. Everyone is different. Sorry about your troubles. If surgery was recent, you may be dealing with antibiotic side effects. That's why i think they want a sample stool. I am not an expert or medical person. Just a person who has had GI problems after hospitalization with tons of antibiotics, which kill the good bacteria along with the bad. My GI doc just this week recommended Align for IBS. He said it is a little pricey ($30.00) but he thinks it is best. Good luck. Phyllis

do u have bowel movements daily? i recently had my gallbladder removed and i have severe ibs-constipation...ive always had problems w/elimination but my history i didnt go daily. the gastro doc says that its normal to go daily but thats not my normal. and since ive had my gb out, its been from one extreme to the other alternating between dia/con. i was taking miralax daily but then diarrhea began. my regular doctor thought i may have an infection so she wants to collect stool specimen but now im constipated. im just confused b/c im also dealing w/being insulin dependent and acute pancreatitis plus many other diagnosis so im not ur "normal" patient.
