ALICIA0099 - Hope things have worked out for you. I tried amitiza once but unfortunately it made me so ill that I discontinued it after two doses. It caused me to experience headache, dizziness, and nausea so bad that I literally could do nothing but lay in bed after taking those doses. Called the doctor after that to ask what to do and never heard back again. I guess he has bigger fish to fry than dealing with a 30 year old constipated woman!

On another note, I always thought I must be the only vegan who experiences constipation despite a daily fiber intake of 40-50 grams. Its comforting to know I'm not alone. I'll have to look into my sources of fiber to find out if it is mostly insoluble that I'm eating.

I'm sorry you are all suffering so much. I still am not "normal" but not as constipated as I was, thank goodness. However, reading about your doctors' advice just makes me madder at mine. He wouldn't do anything for me. Said to try some stupid thing I had already tried without success and then to come back if it didn't work. Of course, I'm not going back. It's a pain to leave my daycare, my dh has to use his sick leave or vacation time to watch the kids and then I spend over $100 to see the dr who does nothing, and then do it again?! No way!
Sorry to vent, I guess that's what this thread is for, as well as help and support. Sorry if I'm not being helpful. I just wish I had a good dr like some of you. I don't think I have many options either. That's why I get so much help and advice from all of you.

I just saw the doc yesterday. she says it's ibs c, haven't gone in a week this time. She said to take miralax every 4 hours and citrucel (I'm gluten free) twice a day until things clear up. She said after that take the miralax once daily and the citrucel twice daily.

I started yesterday, so far nothing.

She said to call her by wed if nothing still, and we'll try something called amitiza. amitza? Something like that. it's an rx, I'd like to avoid that.

I'm vegan, so avoiding insoluble fiber is going to be a pain.

I had the same issue with miralax. I've had IBS-C for years and last summer saw a gastroenterologist for the first time in years after going a week without a BM. He told me to use miralax once a day. I tried this for 5 days with no BM just a lot of bloating in my abdomen. His solution was to take it twice a day. When a few more days went buy with no BM and enough bloating for my husband to tell me I looked 7 months pregnant I called the doctor again who told me to take miralax three times a day! I didn't out of fear my abdomen would explode. I got myself some MOM and a saline enema and this finally did the trick. I tried going back to miralax once a day after this to keep me regular but all it did was cause uncomfortable bloating.

Is it possible you might be taking too much for just starting taking it. I use benefiber (or generic) but if I haven't had it in a couple of weeks, it will make me gassy and bloated. When ever you increase your fiber intake, it's a good idea to start with a small amount and work your way up to the recommended serving.---Or it could be something else altogether for you :)

Yes, I used miralax for a long time last year when things got bad, and it did help but it made me so bloated! I've been able to manage my symptoms better now with a high fiber diet, which causes some problems but it's better than the miralax. Once you get things under control try to lay off the miralax cause it can be veryyy uncomfortable. I drink alot of water in the morning then start off the day with a high fiber diet, which keeps things regular.

Good luck!

I've used Miralax and noticed I was retaining water. Found out through my Urologist the water retention was not from the Miralax but from something Urological. Consider getting it checked out. Something I learned over the years is fluid pills take fluid out of vital organs before taking out of the places it seems to build up, so don't use fluid pills until you know what's going on.

Miralax for me works well, but it's been proven my system has sloe motility so whatever I take for IBS-C usually takes 48 hours or more to work. The best product I've found is a good helping of steel cut oats for the first meal of the day. Fills e up, gives me energy, and provides a great amount of fiber.

I do hope you get the retention issue solved.

Ah thanks for the responses! I, too, have tried milk of magnesia and it works but I feel like it's less natural. I am going to look into some of the other things you mentioned as well. I have tried all the different fibers and it doesn't seem to work at all. But I am willing to try anything because I do not want to become dependent on a laxative.

MOM works well for me too, just tastes awful. Last time though it took 24 hrs and the maximum dose to barely do anything. I was afraid of becoming dependent on it but the dr acted like it wasn't a big deal. I still trust benefiber (generic) more since I can take it daily. I want to try Miralax but it was more expensive and had no generic.

My doctor recommended Milk of Magnesia. I find that this works great when I am constipated. There is no cramping or bloating.

Hi there

I am in my second week of adding a 1/4 cup of Hemp Hearts to my oatmeal every morning. It not only helps with my C but also helps with my appetite.

I wish you the best of luck!

I have problems with too much insoluble fiber...soluble fiber is fine and insoluble fine in small amounts. I have used different types of fiber, but the only one that helped is accacia fiber from Heather's. I still have bad days, but I used to be miserable all the time. I have never tried miralax, but have thought about it. I am worried that I will become dependent on it.

Thanks for the responses! If I figure out something that's better for me or what's causing my water retention, I'll post again. I believe that my IBS is so bad now because when I was a teenager, I didn't ever see a doctor and instead overused laxatives. Now, I'm trying to "rebuild" a rhythm. Thanks everyone! I'm glad I found this site.

I have also had IBS-C for a looong time and my dr told me to try different types of fiber until I found one that works as they are not all the same. After I started reading labels I saw he was right. I use Benefiber without problems once I started more gradually and drink lots of water. Good luck with the water retention, hope it settles down.

Hi, I've been struggling with IBS-C for a very long time. It doesn't seem to matter what I eat, how much I exercise, what I drink, etc. I just cannot seem to manage this disorder. I went to my family doctor about a month ago and he told to take a scoop of Miralax every day with water. I have been trying this and it seems to work okay, but I am also retaining a lot of water. Has anyone else experienced this or could my water retention be from something else?
