I just started a thread theorizing that increasing my water intake prolly was helping my IBS, and that my reduction of water in the past couple days may have lead to my current flare-up. But yes, drinking too much water all at once can send you on a quick potty trip, for both reasons. But in that case, spreading your intake out throughout the day should help.

Oh, I will pray you don't have to be on a jury! I don't think people realize how terrible IBS is unless they have it or know someone with it. I know I wasn't sympathetic to people with it until I got it, I just didn't realize how debilitating it can be.

I just got a jury summons. There is no way I can sit in a courtroom all day with the IBS. I don't know if they will accept that as a medical excuse, either. They don't seem to accept anything around here (unless you fall asleep in the courtroom, which I did the last time since I had cancer).

I don't find an increase in water increases my IBS symptoms. I too would give just about anything to be "normal" and not have to make sure I'm near a restroom most of the time.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

Sigh. If we could get together, it would be great. I have increased my water AND my fiber intake and it's been 5 days since anything has happened if you know what I mean. I don't drink anything cold though, it makes me cramp like crazy. I would give anything to be normal as I'm sure all of you would agree.

I had never heard of the gastrocolic reflex. Maybe my guts were expecting food right away, I don't know. I actually had gone in the kitchen to make lunch when I had to run back to the little room. I hadn't expected the water to do that, but it has before now that I remember.

Maybe a lot has to do with the type. I usually only get about 4-5 glasses of water a day instead of 8-10. If I fall asleep during the day or don't have the water right next to me, it is less than that.

Maybe you're drinking too much water at once? Might make you feel sort of bloated. Also, maybe the water temp is too icy cold?
If you're just drinking glasses and glasses of water it might just start the gastrocolic reflex...increased muscle movement in the intestinal tract...anticipating food. And with IBS, this reaction is all the more sensitive! Might want to check with your Dr.

Do any of you have your IBS set off when you drink more water than you normally do? I drank a few glasses worth in about an hour earlier and it just set things off. I have been trying to up my water drinking so I am getting the amount that is always recommended, but I just cant seem to get that much down.
