I am recently diagnosed and just spent 12 days in the hospital. My new favorite food is fiber one cereal. I have to not only be careful to get enough fiber but also enough potassium.

I have to keep my fiber on an even keel because I alternate between d%c. I'm thinking I am passing gas and I find out there is more than gas. oops! Some of my problem is thanks to the Dr. who delivered my first child and ripped me all the way back! Since I've been quite emotional lately ., (My uncle died in late Sept. ) it's been mostly d.

I have mentioned it before on other threads but I found a lot of help devising a fiber plan with the book "Cure Constipation Now". He also discusses IBS, gas, bloating, and diahrea. Here is the website:

www.cureconstipationnow.com

I had alternating diahrea and constipation. Once I "married" the fiber plan, I got straightened out. That is not to say that I don't still have challenges but am addressing them. Additionally my cholesterol is down 30 points and I feel sooo much better.

Natural fiber is very hard on your stomach and you should not start with it but rather one of the synthetics. I have had a lot of success with Benefiber and am just now trying to add "real" fiber. You just can't add it willy nilly. You can't just take it one day and not the next. YOU HAVE TO MARRY THE PLAN AND DO IT EVERY DAY. You also need to understand the place of laxatives and how they can help train your system.

Personally, I love fiber one. I eat a chewy bar or the carmel delight cereal for breakfast every morning. Otherwise, I have a really hard time getting in all my daily fiber. I also sometimes use benefiber, particularly in my smoothies. We're all different and you'll just have to see what works for you.

I try to avoid fibers that are artificially added to foods because they cause flare ups for me. It is hard to get all your fiber from natural sources, but I try and add just a little ground flax seed to a smoothie and make sure I'm getting all my leafy greens. I have actually gotten really sick from eating Fiber One products because of the inulin or Chicory root additive, and I will never buy Fiber One again.

For me it's important to get both soluble and insoluble fiber. One or the other doesn't help much for me--too much soluble fiber without insoluble can actually cause problems for me. I have IBS-C.

I suggest keeping track of your fiber intake and increasing it slowly and deliberately. Remember, some foods your body just doesn't like anyway, so if carrots give you problems, try something else. Don't get discouraged. I also recommend reading lables and educating yourself about fiber

My son has IBS and finds gatorade to be very helpful when he has a bout of diarhea. Neither of us is drinking soda.

With my IBS, I can't avoid fiber or add fiber. I just have to eat "normally" and pray.
Good luck.

In my nutrition class yesterday she said that insoluble fiber would help push through what is in the intestine. Obviously that doesn't work in every case. She did say to drink more water, whether D or C, because the waste needs the water to pass on the one case, and because in the other case you can easily get dehydrated. In fact, for D she recommended some drinking of Gatorade or similar drink to replenish lost minerals and such.

I get C every time I increase my fiber too fast. Even a new bran cereal will stop the goodness. I have to be very slow and add insoluble fiber in small quantities. (The D comes from stress, usually not from my foods.) My caution for anyone is go slow on changing your foods.

I cannot sing the praises too highly for www.helpforibs.com. Heather lists the different soluble and insoluble fibers and has a great deal of information on her website and even more in her book. I also take Benefiber and Align and these products have helped me tremendously so I add my endorsement to the other bloggers who are recommending the same thing. It helps to know that others are going through the same thing. Thanks to everyone for their added support.

I use Benefiber and Align and also eat yogurt with probiotics. The three keep my IBS under control.

I also use the fiber from helpforibs.com. I have severe IBS-d. It has worked fabulously. Just be sure to follow the directions and work up to your optimal amount slowly. I also take Align every day. These two products have helped me more than anything the doctors have given me. If you can, also get the book Eating for IBS from the above website. Very helpful, and will make eating sort of fun again. Hope this helps. If you can't get the fiber from the website, I heard, but never tried myself, that Benefiber helps too, thou not as well.

I have IBS-D, and I too get scared of Fiber, because of the D. This is so frustrating. I don't know what to do. I feel almost paralyzed at times because I am so scared. One member said she used Align, but I am afraid to try anything!

I have IBS C and really have to watch my fiber. For a long time, I thought I needed to eat more fiber to solve my problem, but it just made things worse. Then I found out I had IBS and started to follow the adive on www.helpforibs.com. I ordered the acacia tummy fiber and it helped a lot! I really have to watch the insoluble fiber...if I do that I am fine most of the time. According to that website the accacia fiber helps both ibs-c and ibs-d.

Fiber is always mentioned as something good for many health problems, including two that I have, so I am trying to figure out how to increase it without IBS problems. Has anybody increased fiber and taken Immodium to keep from having the IBS-D reactions to it? Do you think that one could do that and eventually tolerate the increase in fiber? It is about impossible to ask the doctors I go to because most just say I have to just figure out what is causing the reactions and quit eating it. The trouble is, I can't figure out what causes the reaction most of the time. I only know a couple things that have caused the reactions constantly.
