I like your poster (do you have a picture to post?) If only it were that easy to get around the drama, but keep them busy and there will be less of it.

Thanks for the insight! I'm switching to a new cluster within our ENORMOUS system, so I won't be seeing the same kids. It's still a Title 1 school, so the dynamic will be similar. I'm hoping to come at it from a "This is all new for me too angle, so let's succeed together!" I've always had a reputation for being strict, but fair so I hope this continues to work for me.

I've printed my first poster for my door already. It's a picture of a goofy llama. I'll be adding the words, "Leave your drama with the llama!"

If it is to be, it is up to me.

First semester it will be just like teaching elementary:) They are so scared and just want to get their lockers open and not get lost. By the time you get back from Christmas break, you will have to rein them back in:) One thing I always enjoy with middle schoolers is watching them grow and mature or try to. You can see them become 7th graders. Typically it happens right around March, sometimes sooner depending on the group.
Are you at one of the elementary schools that feeds into the middle school?

As a Resource Specialist, I've seen 6th graders on both elementary and middle school campuses. They are a different bunch. The hormones generally haven't started raging yet, but they can't wait to grow up. I prefer to stay at the elementary level without them, but I do have a couple of friends that love teaching 6th grade. I suggest you weigh carefully the subject matter you want to teach with the Drama Queens and Kings you will be teaching it to. Fortunately there is someone for each age group.

What an exciting career move! I hope it goes well for you. Here's my advice:
1. Be yourself. All children spot phonies, but sixth graders have less inhibitions and will tell you so.
2. Don't take their moods personally.
3. Establish clear routines and procedures for behavior and material use.
4. Check to see what other teachers in your building are doing for discipline.

Best wishes,
Mary

I've always been a bit of a lurker on this team, but it's time to come out of hiding and ask for some advice! I've always taught elementary school, but made the choice to move up to middle school and teach my passion, science. I'll be teaching 6th grade earth science in the fall and am a little terrified! I have a solid handle on the content but am worried about the classroom management and discipline. Any words of advice?

Sorry to hear about your galbladder. They're pesky little organs! I had mine removed several years ago and it was one of the best things I could have done. The recovery was fairly quick and way better than suffering through the attacks! Good luck with it!

Hello, hello all! So glad the year is over:)
Monday and Tuesday are for cleaning up and then summer happiness can officially begin!

Janey, I am so sorry to read about the server at your school! How nerve racking! I hope all is saved as your tech guy assures you it is. If your tech guy is like ours, you are in really, really good hands:)

I cannot wait til I hit retirement age. More like I just wanna do what I want without having to follow a specific schedule. YUCK.
Enjoy your Sunday! It's beautiful here!

Glad you are still with us, Barb! I'm getting closer to retirement, about 2 years, though I was recently told it might pay me to work to 63 instead of 62. My hubby has been retired for 5 years, and wants me to hurry up. Last day for this year is tomorrow, then clean up and stash stuff so my room can be cleaned over the summer. Somehow, I always lose stuff in this process, and don't find everything until I decorate for winter holidays.

I have been absent for a couple of months.. not in spirit, just in posting! It has been busy and tense... death in the family, end of school year.. nothing unusual, just lots of it.

But... I have retired from the classroom.... not a wholeheartedly enthusiastic decision, because it was still a whole lot of fun and I loved the kids, my colleagues and the subject matter. But I decided it was better to go while they still were sad to see me go! The deeper reason is that my husband was eager to retire... and worked this year so I could work one more (He didn't like the idea of retiring before me)... so I retired as of May 25 and his last day of work was last Friday. I don't think it will hit me till August, though.

It's fun to think of reinventing myself, finishing projects, not grading papers (well, I'll still teach at the community college, but that's 15 students rather than 150.... and only one class rather than 5 or 6! I'll sub, I just got back from reading and scoring AP tests for a week, and there are lots of things I'm excited about.

I'd like to stay in this group... I don't think I'll ever be anything but a teacher in my heart and self-identity! And I will have even more time to cultivate ATTITUDE!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer.... and that your burdens are light.

4 more student days, one paid day to clean up my messes (papers), and we'll see how many additional days I need to get my room 'summer ready'. emoticon
emoticon The server finally was repaired. I talked with a tech guy last week and he assured me that the data was backed up so it is recoverable even if the server isn't. Apparently it all needs to be upgraded and replaced.

Disaster struck today. The district's server crashed and with it 17 years of saved lesson plans, worksheets, various forms, student records, saved ideas, spelling lists, .... They are working on it, but the longer it takes the higher my stress level. AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!! It is worse because they just replaced my teacher computer with a new one, so I moved all my daily type stuff onto the server to save it. Haven't had time this week to move it back.

Very true, but I want to eat the sugar snaps, they are healthy and tasty. I use the staff lounge to unload sweets that would be too much and too tempting for me and hubby.

In Washington State we were trying to get student growth goals. Teachers and principals sit down at the beginning of the year and agree to a goal for the class with multiple measures during the school year.

The problem with standardized tests is they happen once during the school year and don't necessarily measure what was taught. It's a gotcha system.

Resting during my much needed spring break. Also finishing taxes and working on FAFSA so my wonderful son can stay in college. He is worth it, but the process is a pain. Need to get to school and tidy my room and rough out a couple of weeks of lesson plans.

MJB, the convention I just attended was CARS+, the California Organization for Special Educators. I did not have to pay to attend as I am a board member for the organization, but a lot of our members do get their districts to pay for it as there are so few good opportunities for special educators to get quality professional development. It is also a reasonably priced event. Before I was on the board my district would cover my registration and sub and I paid transportation and hotel. I went to a good session on common core, and a fun one on brain research. Saw some innovative ideas about writing and a moving keynote with a father and son about living with autism. emoticon

How was the convention Janey?

We have two new members, they introduced themselves on the cheat sheet thread, I think. Anyway I told them to join us here and that this seems to be one of those times of the years when we all seem to be crazy busy.

I'm in the unusual position that I can re-do my classroom - I'm talking in a big way. There is some type of grant that will pay for much, but I'm getting overwhelmed at looking at all the different options.
Currently, I am painting my room - believe it or not - the bottom two thirds is a medium green color called jalapino (sp) jelly and the top third is lavender. They look good together - better than the poopy brown that was on there. But we can request lighting, electronics - gonna try for a smart board and lap tops for the kiddos. Rugs, new desks, chairs - name it. I have high school emotional support. Anyone else get to do anything like that or know of good websites for materials and such?

Barb,
Always feel welcome to share here - people don't realize it's the "LIFE - happenings that affect our diet and exercise. If we can share and get things off our chest in a safe place, for many that seems to help. God Bless you for taking care of Aunt Beth, And enjoy the home stretch of the year and your career as a teacher. I Hope that next chapter in life is as enjoyable as this last has been for you!

Janey - Yeah you for dealing with a four hour IEP! Whew must have been a doozy.
Had our first "normal" days in a month this week. Two days in school in a row for the full day. It felt kinda weird and tiring. After weeks of delays and cancellations.

Hope you can all enjoy a good weekend - we have a new team member, Joanna who as soon as she gets here, I"m sure you'll give a warm welcome too. It will be nice to add another to our chats. =)

That is quite a journey you are going through with your aunt. I am approaching the age my mom was when we lost her, and she did everything right, ate carefully, exercised even in Minnesota, but that cruel cancer got her anyway. I think we all just have to do the best we can

Hi.. thought I'd check back in and thank you for the good thoughts regarding Auntie Beth... the last three weeks have been filled with four 400-mile round trips to Phoenix and intensive changes... from hospital for her to rehab facility to a group home.... physically she's much better.... the pneumonia, bronchitis, and congestive heart failure are much better and the renal function is normal for a 94-year-old. However, the rehab kicked her down a lot.. three hours of intensive rehab a day was more than she could stand and left her exhausted. But she could not go back at this point to living on her own, so she's in a small group home. We investigated a ton of them, visited many, and settled on one that seems to work well for her. She's eating well, socializing, lucid most of the time, and starting to be able to get around on her walker. Sigh. One day at a time.

What this has to do with SparkPeople.... it made me more convinced to be HEALTHY in everything I can control. There is a woman my age (63) in the group home... ravaged by a lifetime of anorexia... sigh. Mentally acute but physically so sad. And I look at Auntie Beth, who, though she ate healthily, also refused to do any exercise or strength training when she could. Not blaming her.... but I don't want to be her, either. So off I go.... holding on till May when my husband and I both retire. I will miss the classroom terribly but it will be another chapter!

I hope you are all well.... blessings!

Barb - God Bless your aunt with all her teeth - that's quite an accomplishment! God Bless you for caring for her. No easy task. I'm glad to hear you are trying to take care of yourself as well.

I think once we get past this week the weather should ease some. Historically, the past few years at least it seems Valentine's week / weekend we get hit.

I anyone trying or doing anything different with their routines re: healthy lifestyles during the winter months? I'm trying to change up my strength training due to a strained ligament in my lower back. It's limited my cardio too. It's kind of difficult to walk when you are crooked. But I was able to do 2 miles of my walking video this morning - and it felt good. =)

Have a good week!

Reading all your posts makes me feel very guilty. We DID have to scrape ice off windshields on Tuesday, but it has warmed up nicely. We even had a little very welcome rain, but not near enough. I will say I am dreading the summer fire season since we have not had the normal cold to kill off the undergrowth and there is no snowpack to provide water next summer.

We have been burning up the interstate between here and north Phoenix, where our 94 year old aunt has been hospitalized with many of the ailments of old age, exacerbated by pneumonia, renal insufficiency and bronchitis. But things are getting a bit better and she actually moved from hospital to rehab facility last night. She is very proud of still having all her own teeth at her age, but she is also using them trying to bite the nursing staff when she wakens confused in the night. Days are fine and lucid. It's a 450 mile round trip and the car knows the way. I've only missed one day of school so far; we'll head back tomorrow for the weekend. The only thing I've held on to is trying to get my walking in every day.. sometimes in hospital corridors or around the hotel after dark. Sigh.

Grades for midterm were due yesterday so I finally finished grading at 10 p.m which made it challenging to face my first class at 6:20 this morning!

Have a great day, and stay as warm as you can!

Early spring - but not an early summer! We are braced for another storm. Another spark friend from I think it's South Dakota - warned us "easterners" that we have a big one headed for us in the next couple of days she said this AM it felt like -10! WOW. Some routine would be nice about now. What's bad is we are getting all the "breaks" now - and it will be a long stretch when the weather finally breaks.

I'm prepared - stopped at the store and bought a big bag of apples - I'll be making applesauce and also pectin - I already have a large bottle of wine - I'll be making another batch of wine jelly!

Hope all is well with everyone else and those stuck with snow days like me have a good plan to keep busy and stay warm.

Frances

My cats seem to be enjoying all this extra "mom" time. emoticon

We are having yet another snow day. This time there is snow, I love to shovel snow, but before attempting to shovel, I opted to feed the birds and must have twisted as I bent over to scoop bird seed and messed by back up before even shoveling. =(
I'd rather shovel snow than rake leaves - go figure. Anyway got my portion of report cards done, gonna try to get out and shovel a little I've iced and taken ibuprofen for the back. I will remember to tuck my tummy in to support it. Hope all is well with you all!

I can't completely say I chose to live here, it was family connections, but I have chosen not to move elsewhere. My son is going to college in the midwest and says grad school will be in CA. We don't have snow days, but we have had flood and fire days, but not in the last 10 years.

Janey,
In all honesty - I'd rather have what we have than what you have - I hate extended heat!
Well, we should all be halfway or close to halfway through the year. The second semester started today for us.
Hope all goes well

My sympathies to all of you dealing with this crazy winter. We have the opposite, no significant rain and ridiculously warm temperatures. All my broccoli went to flowers when I wasn't looking. We are more comfortable now, but the long term effect of a hot dry winter is scary to contemplate.

Makes a lot of sense doesn't it Barb - at least you have a safe place to vent!

At least my school cancelled last night - just read on FB one that didn't until 7:30 this morning. That's horrible!

We have our third "snow" day this week tomorrow due more to single and negative digit temps. SPRING is looking VERY long in my classroom! Last week there were two days and a couple the week before. On a good note -I'm getting 4 miles of my walking video in, have a freezer full of a variety of homemade soups in one cup containers - tomato, lentil, cabbage, chicken, stuffed pepper, and ham and green bean. Today I made a batch of wine jelly.

Tomorrow, I think I'll do some research for my rock history class.

Hope you are all well, safe and warm.

Hi girls,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Some how I missed the posts that would let me know someone has posted.
I was stressed through November and December with back to back IEP's and Re-evals. Still tweaking a couple of them.
I'm SO happy to see Lisa back!
Janey ~ I pray it goes well, hopefully the attorney has some sense of the child's limitations and can help the parent see it with your meetings.
We are having some of our own attorney guided meetings but for a VERY different reason. A former principal was "let go" and now she's filing suit alleging that our Exec. Director did to her the very things she did to us - reprimanding us and yelling at us in front of staff and students alike. It's not pretty.

Yes, we've had more snow days and delays than I've had in a while. Only one day of school for me this week. Monday was MLKjr Day. Tuesday and Wednesday off because of the extreme cold rather than the snow, which we had some of Thursday a 2 hour delay and then I attended one of the best seminars of my career today.

Hope you are all well and safe and warm if in a cold climate. Promise to check back more regularly.

Janey, I'm glad you're okay then.

I hope everyone has a great weekend ahead.. I guess a lot of you have not had much school lately due to weather....one of my students commented on that yesterday, with some envy, and the very bright girl sitting next to her snapped, "Yeah, but they'll probably still be in school in July!" I hope it's not that bad. Be safe and warm!

Don't worry, Barb, my school psychologist was in the room the whole time the outside psych was observing, and our special ed director will attend all meetings. No one is addressing me personally, I just worry what this will cost our small district and hurt the other students. I am secretary for our local this year, so I know who to contact if needed.

New stresser in my life, for the first time in my career, I have a parent who is coming in with an attorney. Mom has never really accepted her child's learning disability, keeps hoping there is a surgery or something that would fix him. This just may run me into early retirement.

Hi friends.. back at the routine of school, more school, all the other stuff, and I've missed checking in each day. All is good.. great holidays, though I probably gained back about five pounds... and I'm not too stressed about it. I have realized that people with "normal" weight patterns do that too, so I'm down about to where I was in mid-November and feeling healthy again. Crazy busy.

This is my last semester of active full time classroom teaching. I'm not counting down and I'm mildly conflicted since I know how much I will miss it. But I am okay with it since my husband is more eager to retire than I am.. he worked an additional year this year so I could teach one more year... it's time to play a little Meanwhile we're working on healthy lives and being relatively successful, thanks to Sparkpeople and our Fitbits.

Life is good... I hope it is for you too!

I am going to do my best to keep up with you ladies. I have really got to get started on cutting back. It has been a sickly last three months and I am convinced if I lose some weight I will get better. I am trying to get some friends to start on this journey with me. We are going to do a Zumba class at my school and maybe even start a school thread. I am not really sure what the rest of them want to do. I may even try and get them to join this thread, because they are all teachers. They are a great group! I pray you are all doing well. emoticon

Dropping into say hello and tell you that I have not forgotten my Spark friends! I hope everyone had a great holiday season and praying that the New Year brings you happiness and joy.

I am wondering if anyone here has ordered the Spark tracker and if they did, I need to know if it is worth the money. Those that know me, know how I love WW, but I just can't afford it anymore. I have downloaded the Sparkpeople app on my iphone and now thinking about buying the tracker.

I just can't live with this weight anymore. My knees, back, hips and neck are giving out. I live everyday in pain. I barely can work because of it. I only have 2 more years until retirement and I would like to enjoy those years, despite the recent changes in education. That's another story for another day.

I have a wonderful man in my life and he just got back from Afghanistan and is supporting me 100% in the new lifestyle change. He lost 50 and I gained it and probably some more since we met 4 years ago. I just want to get back on that harley and start enjoying life again. I can't with the shape I am in.

Leaving denial behind and facing the truth!

Morning! I hope you're all doing well--almost Christmas break!!!

As for two extra hours, I'd be fine with that, but they have to be uninterrupted. No parents, no other staff, etc...just solo teacher time ;)

I get the dragging for sure, I'm exhausted. Not getting the sleep I should get and having a hard time keeping focus in the evenings. I'm thinking about taking the day before to clean house but also thinking of taking a day to do paperwork. I have no time at school any more! And our janitors are leaving early or not coming in and then I can't stay after. It's just so much harder when I get back home. Ok, enough complaining - gotta do my strength and work on some lesson plans for next week. Have a good weekend ladies!

Hang in there, Thanksgiving is next week, then you start the countdown to Christmas which is completely different from any other "school season" for good or bad, then you can welcome a more normal January and February.

It was an amazing weekend!
I will be driving back to Cincy to see Louis! I saw passion in his conducting the one time I saw him on TV - It was there - the music was amazing! And seeing and hearing Maya Angelou both as she read quotes from Lincoln and in the pre-concert talk. GREAT!

Now to get to work - finish worksheet for tomorrow and IEP for Thursday.
Have a great week
And if any of you are Veterans - thank you for your service and sacrifice!

Sounds like a great weekend. I'm preparing for two more busy weeks. The 3 day weekend is a nice break though I'm not looking forward to my dentist visit tomorrow.

Glad you stopped by Janey - Hope you got and get the rest you need.
I'm just very overwhelmed with paper work - and balancing that with a little bit of social life that doesn't usually happen. But I gotta start taking care and doing for me.
Taking care of a Bucket list item this weekend - seeing a conductor I've wanted to see for years - Louis Langree with a bonus - Dr. Maya Angelo will be there reading the Gettysburg Address. Just have to drive 5 hours to Cincinnati to see this, but it'll be worth it!

Finish strong teachers!
