We are reaching or for some have reached the end of the school year. Anyone have healthy plans to share> I've just flown across country for my son's college graduation. Expect to do a lot of walking around campus.

My district sent me to an amazing conference. The CUE National Convention in Palm Springs. CUE is Computer Using Educators. Nearly 3,000 registered attendees. I learned so much, but I'm going to need days to process it all.

I had a 3rd grader weeping at the computer today while trying to figure out her SBAC test. She has all the sped accommodations allowed, but she still couldn't read the passages. She is smart, and can give oral answers well if only she understands the story, but of course she couldn't. Reading the answer choices was not enough. Broke my heart how she kept trying and will have to come back tomorrow to fail some more. I can administer a complete WIAT in less time than she will sit at a computer this week, get more information, and she would feel better. This is obscene.

So many of my students were on field trips on and off this week, and we had a blood drive on Thursday. I'm so torn between seeing the benefits of field trips and blood drives and being frustrated over having half-empty classes when we are now 8 class periods away from IB and AP exams. (We teach on an AB schedule.) Next week is Spring Spirit Week and we have a pep rally before lunch on Friday.

I told my IB coordinator that I really need to find the time to journal at the end of the day so that I can look back at this year at this time next year and tell myself it will all be okay when they sit the exams! Then I have to wonder why I'm more anxious about the exams than any of my students appear to be......

March is always a tough month for me as we're getting close to IB and AP exams and I have to send things to IB. This is our second year with IB seniors, and I think we've put some things in place to make year 3 a little easier! Regardless, I am very happy to be on spring break. I have a crate of 50 composition notebooks in the back of my car, but it's staying there until next weekend! Essay grading will have to take a back seat to having fun!

Oops, I hadn't checked here for a while and missed your post, Frances. I've got to re-establish eating and exercising routines at home since I will be here for three weeks, and can't just grab and go my little planned lunch box stuff.

HI gang,
sorry I have been absent for so long. I've been logging, but not visiting any of my teams. I got rather disheartened here with long periods of no activity from most of the team, but Janey - she's always been a steady when life has permitted.Yesterday was our 29th day and most all the "honeymoons" are over and we are getting into the nitty gritty of the school year. The biggest difference is I now have the BEST principal of my 25 year career, someone who truly cares about his staff as well as the students. After years of having to cover my own back I don't know how to handle it.
Glad you have sweethearts Janey!
I'll try to visit more regularly.
Someone else has taken over the leadership of this team, although I didn't see any posts from her looking back as far as June.
Take care one and all!
Frances

Yes, middle schoolers tend to have better hygiene than elementary kiddoos, though I'm surprised you are finding less after school work. I moved from middle to elementary and found the opposite. Maybe you don't have as many preps as I did in RSP.

Moving to middle school is turning out to be a great choice! It's a lot different, but I'm truly enjoying it. I'm not getting as many steps in as I did in the elementary school, but I'm not working as long at home each night, so I have more time to walk the pups! And miracle of miracles, I held off the back to school crud (caught from the kids) til AFTER Labor Day! A first for me!!!

Thanks for the insight! I'm switching to a new cluster within our ENORMOUS system, so I won't be seeing the same kids. It's still a Title 1 school, so the dynamic will be similar. I'm hoping to come at it from a "This is all new for me too angle, so let's succeed together!" I've always had a reputation for being strict, but fair so I hope this continues to work for me.

I've printed my first poster for my door already. It's a picture of a goofy llama. I'll be adding the words, "Leave your drama with the llama!"

First semester it will be just like teaching elementary:) They are so scared and just want to get their lockers open and not get lost. By the time you get back from Christmas break, you will have to rein them back in:) One thing I always enjoy with middle schoolers is watching them grow and mature or try to. You can see them become 7th graders. Typically it happens right around March, sometimes sooner depending on the group.

As a Resource Specialist, I've seen 6th graders on both elementary and middle school campuses. They are a different bunch. The hormones generally haven't started raging yet, but they can't wait to grow up. I prefer to stay at the elementary level without them, but I do have a couple of friends that love teaching 6th grade. I suggest you weigh carefully the subject matter you want to teach with the Drama Queens and Kings you will be teaching it to. Fortunately there is someone for each age group.

What an exciting career move! I hope it goes well for you. Here's my advice:
1. Be yourself. All children spot phonies, but sixth graders have less inhibitions and will tell you so.
2. Don't take their moods personally.
3. Establish clear routines and procedures for behavior and material use.
4. Check to see what other teachers in your building are doing for discipline.

Best wishes,
Mary

I've always been a bit of a lurker on this team, but it's time to come out of hiding and ask for some advice! I've always taught elementary school, but made the choice to move up to middle school and teach my passion, science. I'll be teaching 6th grade earth science in the fall and am a little terrified! I have a solid handle on the content but am worried about the classroom management and discipline. Any words of advice?

Sorry to hear about your galbladder. They're pesky little organs! I had mine removed several years ago and it was one of the best things I could have done. The recovery was fairly quick and way better than suffering through the attacks! Good luck with it!

Hello, hello all! So glad the year is over:)
Monday and Tuesday are for cleaning up and then summer happiness can officially begin!

Janey, I am so sorry to read about the server at your school! How nerve racking! I hope all is saved as your tech guy assures you it is. If your tech guy is like ours, you are in really, really good hands:)

I cannot wait til I hit retirement age. More like I just wanna do what I want without having to follow a specific schedule. YUCK.
Enjoy your Sunday! It's beautiful here!

Glad you are still with us, Barb! I'm getting closer to retirement, about 2 years, though I was recently told it might pay me to work to 63 instead of 62. My hubby has been retired for 5 years, and wants me to hurry up. Last day for this year is tomorrow, then clean up and stash stuff so my room can be cleaned over the summer. Somehow, I always lose stuff in this process, and don't find everything until I decorate for winter holidays.

I have been absent for a couple of months.. not in spirit, just in posting! It has been busy and tense... death in the family, end of school year.. nothing unusual, just lots of it.

But... I have retired from the classroom.... not a wholeheartedly enthusiastic decision, because it was still a whole lot of fun and I loved the kids, my colleagues and the subject matter. But I decided it was better to go while they still were sad to see me go! The deeper reason is that my husband was eager to retire... and worked this year so I could work one more (He didn't like the idea of retiring before me)... so I retired as of May 25 and his last day of work was last Friday. I don't think it will hit me till August, though.

It's fun to think of reinventing myself, finishing projects, not grading papers (well, I'll still teach at the community college, but that's 15 students rather than 150.... and only one class rather than 5 or 6! I'll sub, I just got back from reading and scoring AP tests for a week, and there are lots of things I'm excited about.

I'd like to stay in this group... I don't think I'll ever be anything but a teacher in my heart and self-identity! And I will have even more time to cultivate ATTITUDE!

I hope you all have a wonderful summer.... and that your burdens are light.

Barb

4 more student days, one paid day to clean up my messes (papers), and we'll see how many additional days I need to get my room 'summer ready'. emoticon
emoticon The server finally was repaired. I talked with a tech guy last week and he assured me that the data was backed up so it is recoverable even if the server isn't. Apparently it all needs to be upgraded and replaced.

Disaster struck today. The district's server crashed and with it 17 years of saved lesson plans, worksheets, various forms, student records, saved ideas, spelling lists, .... They are working on it, but the longer it takes the higher my stress level. AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!! It is worse because they just replaced my teacher computer with a new one, so I moved all my daily type stuff onto the server to save it. Haven't had time this week to move it back.

In Washington State we were trying to get student growth goals. Teachers and principals sit down at the beginning of the year and agree to a goal for the class with multiple measures during the school year.

The problem with standardized tests is they happen once during the school year and don't necessarily measure what was taught. It's a gotcha system.

Resting during my much needed spring break. Also finishing taxes and working on FAFSA so my wonderful son can stay in college. He is worth it, but the process is a pain. Need to get to school and tidy my room and rough out a couple of weeks of lesson plans.

MJB, the convention I just attended was CARS+, the California Organization for Special Educators. I did not have to pay to attend as I am a board member for the organization, but a lot of our members do get their districts to pay for it as there are so few good opportunities for special educators to get quality professional development. It is also a reasonably priced event. Before I was on the board my district would cover my registration and sub and I paid transportation and hotel. I went to a good session on common core, and a fun one on brain research. Saw some innovative ideas about writing and a moving keynote with a father and son about living with autism. emoticon

What conventions do you attend? Do you have to pay out of pocket or does your district support you?

How was the convention Janey?

We have two new members, they introduced themselves on the cheat sheet thread, I think. Anyway I told them to join us here and that this seems to be one of those times of the years when we all seem to be crazy busy.

I'm in the unusual position that I can re-do my classroom - I'm talking in a big way. There is some type of grant that will pay for much, but I'm getting overwhelmed at looking at all the different options.
Currently, I am painting my room - believe it or not - the bottom two thirds is a medium green color called jalapino (sp) jelly and the top third is lavender. They look good together - better than the poopy brown that was on there. But we can request lighting, electronics - gonna try for a smart board and lap tops for the kiddos. Rugs, new desks, chairs - name it. I have high school emotional support. Anyone else get to do anything like that or know of good websites for materials and such?

Barb,
Always feel welcome to share here - people don't realize it's the "LIFE - happenings that affect our diet and exercise. If we can share and get things off our chest in a safe place, for many that seems to help. God Bless you for taking care of Aunt Beth, And enjoy the home stretch of the year and your career as a teacher. I Hope that next chapter in life is as enjoyable as this last has been for you!

Janey - Yeah you for dealing with a four hour IEP! Whew must have been a doozy.
Had our first "normal" days in a month this week. Two days in school in a row for the full day. It felt kinda weird and tiring. After weeks of delays and cancellations.

Hope you can all enjoy a good weekend - we have a new team member, Joanna who as soon as she gets here, I"m sure you'll give a warm welcome too. It will be nice to add another to our chats. =)
