Hello,
I realized this morning that I never introduced myself here. My name is Mary and I teach fourth grade in a public school just north of Seattle. I've been in this district as a teacher for 23 years. I was here as a student from kindergarten to graduation.

Welcome Joanna,
Sounds like you have real motivation now - to stay healthy for yourself, your children at home and your children at work. Keeping your blood pressure down will help on "those days" with that class you can handle. I teach in a school with all the kids that couldn't be "handled," so I understand those trying days.

Join us on the main chat thread Celebrate, Support and Vent. There are teachers from all over the country here - used to have some outside the country too. All are always welcome.

Good Morning everyone! My name is Joanna, and I teach fourth grade in MA. I was a second grade teacher for 10 years before taking 15 years of maternity leave after my second daughter was born. As my oldest was preparing to head to college I realized that it was time to go back to teaching so .... I am now in my 3rd year of my post maternity leave.

I love my kiddos, but they certainly are challenging. I have the "but you can handle them" class so every day is a constant battle, but worth every moment.

Had to have some surgery a few days ago, and had a scare in the operating room. My BP went up to almost 200 (stroke, seizure area) and really made my open my eyes. I don't normally have high BP but... it showed me that it was time to take my health seriously.

So, here I am. Again. Started with spark in 2008 and hopefully this time I can stick with it. Look forward to chatting and getting to know some of you!

Joanna in MA

Welcome Ashley!
Sorry it took me a few days to welcome you, but as you said - I'm overwhelmed myself by school and by life. I have two Re-evaluations and IEP's coming in the next couple of weeks and my own evaluation will be before Christmas with a new format! ARGH!
Come join us on the Celebrate, Support and Vent thread - that's where most stop by to visit.
Hope you weren't affected by this crazy weather.
I'll be happy to help you be accountable - just stop by often!

Hello! My name is Ashley--I'm a first year high school English teacher teaching at a little Christian school in Indiana. I teach 6 different preps and have been COMPLETELY overwhelmed with my workload--not to complain: I love every second of it. I know that I need to take care of myself so I can take care of my students, so I'm really looking for some accountability partners who will keep me on task!

Nice to meet you all and I hope your school years are going GREAT!

Becky it doesn't matter which you use at least one or two of us check the into threads.
Welcome most of us visit the Celebrate, Support and Vent page regularly - as time permits during the school year. I have it checked so that when people reply, I get notice and then go see what's happening! It's been a while since we've had someone active from outside the US - that'll be nice to hear some different perspective! Come join us on the main thread - we are from various places and teach various levels and types of children.

I'm in SW Pennsylvania and teach history to Emotionally Disturbed High School Students = never a dull moment! =)

Welcome, Karla. I know what you mean by the challenges when school starts. I know the key is planning what you are going to eat and when you are going to exercise every day/week. That doesn't mean it is easy or even that I always do it.

Hi everyone. I am looking for a group of supportive teachers who will help me stay focused on my Sparkpeople journey when I go back to school later this month. I have lurked around Sparkpeople for many years and always get motivated during the summer and loose the battle once school starts. This summer has been better so I am hoping to continue it as the school year begins.

I teach in a small school district in NE Kansas. What originally started as a K-12 vocal/general music position has morphed into a K-12 everything position due to budget cuts and staff cuts. I love my job but it takes a lot out of me. Trying to keep myself in the priorities a little more this year.

I look forward to meeting you and sharing out journey together.

Karla

Welcome Tina!
I too am a special education teacher - but from all the way up in Penna!
May I suggest picking one or two behaviors and focusing on them to change for the positive. Remember you are NOT on a diet - but are making a lifestyle change!

Congratulations running a mile, I've been at this for quite a while and still insist, I'm a WALKER! But the wonderful thing is all are welcomed and accepted and are athletes! =)

Also Congratulations on the Grant - You MUST be doing a lot of things right to win that grant!

Come join us on the Celebrate, Support, Vent share it all thread, that's where most of the activity is. The other girls would love to cheer you on and will love to hear of you winning the grant! Come say hi to the rest of the gang!

Hello! I am new to this blog area. My name is Tina and I am a special education teacher working with kids in third through fifth grades. I work at a small rural school in southern Mississippi. We just won a $40,000 grant from Samsung, finishing in the top 15 from over 1600 entries. My students test scores are good. I AM FAT!! I can teach, write grants, take care of my family, but I have trouble when it comes time to take care of me! Maybe this will be the year that I can beat this monster. We are on spring break and I have told myself that I will pretend I am on the "Biggest Loser" show this week. I have been able to run a mile twice this week, along with walking and hand weights.
We are implementing Common Core Standards this year and it has been stressful because we are still giving our state test with different standards. I want to be skinny no matter what I have to do at work. How about you??? emoticon

Emilie,
If you want to do it - it will happen. Start small and slow and build healthy behaviors one at a time - just like you do when teaching your angels! Pick a behavior and start a streak - it's a great motivator!

emoticon Hi, Barb, sorry I was not paying attention when you first posted. I'm also closer to retirement than not, but with my baby finishing his senior year in high school, still have a lot going on. I have a social studies credential I've never used, always taught special ed. Would like to try sometime, but not likely soon.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I can understand your principal frustrations, though I'm blessed with a pretty decent one. But I've been our union local's advocacy person for a while and spend a lot of time trying to facilitate better relationships between teachers and admin in the 8 schools in our District. It does seem like we all ought to treat each other better!

Just home from a great student concert... what a rush it is to see kids doing such great stuff. Amazing.

Welcome Barbwms -
Many of our teachers have been rather tied up with - school - go figure and have not been very active - Janey and I stop by regularly and will welcome someone additional to chat with - you can say that you can have two on one attention - better than special ed - LOL!
Seriously - stop by the talk it up thread - and visit with us - share you successes, concerns and difficulties or just even frustrations - currently mine is my principle!
Good Luck and best wishes -

Hi -- I'm new to this team; like many people I'm losing weight I've lost before. So far so good.. and it seems easier to stick to healthier patterns with the help of things like Spark People.

I teach high school social studies classes in SE Arizona... this year I have two sections of US History; one of APUS History; one of AP Human Geography and one of Philosophy. I love my job, but am nearing retirement. Which is a subject that makes me very ambivalent!

I am busy with lots of stuff; teachers' assocation (I'm NOT president this year, which has helped my stress levels amazingly!); I sponsor several clubs, and generally stay very busy.

My first grandchild is coming in June-- a little girl; I have two grown, married sons. My husband and I have been married 41 years and have been back in Arizona for 21 years after he completed a 20-year career as an Army officer. We lived in 7 states and Germany and Turkey during that time. I have serious wanderlust.

Life is good!

Hi! I'm a returning spark member in Florida. I started teaching middle school last year, and so far I love it. I teach 8th grade English, and I am looking forward to getting fit this year. I am already walking around the track with a group at my school, and I can't wait until the weather cools off.
I also got married last year, and I would like to be a lot thinner by my anniversary.

Welcome to sparkpeople and to teachers with an attitude! If you follow the sparkpeople program, and log your food daily, stay withing the limits AND exercise regularly you should be at or near your goal by the end of this coming school year! I've seen it happen. Mostly people visit on the talk it up thread, so please join us there. Any questions - Please post. I'm hoping with this school year we can be more active here. People tend to get overwhelmed with school, family etc and this tends to be at the bottom of the list - but even to stop by once or twice a week can be helpful. I will usually always respond - others do too.

I take it you teach High School Math - how many years have you been in the classroom? Or is this your first - feel free to respond on the talk it up thread.

Nice to have you aboard!

I'm a high school teacher in MD and this is my first time using Sparkpeople so I'm still getting used to the site. My goal is to get to my college weight (under 200) by next summer. Long term, I'd love to continue to lose weight for the next 2 years and be considered a healthy weight by the time I start trying to have a baby. I love message boards (you may remember me from Proteacher.net) so this seems like a great site for me.

Hi Jill, sounds like you really spread yourself thin - teaching in two states and inclusion + ESL and with your family - no wonder it's hard to plan ahead. I do some of my planning on the weekend - including making a freezing healthy stews and soups. I also make a big pot of brown rice and put it in one cup containers and freeze them - 2 or 3 minutes in the microwave and I can have them as a side to whatever I'm preparing. I've been doing a lot more beans and such - so the brown rice goes nicely with that. I've even been playing with throwing some herbs- thyme - in while it's cooking - so its and herbed rice. Come join us on the talk it up thread. It's been slow as many of us are busy - but there have been a few new members, maybe we can get some interesting chats going. Good Luck - message me when you need anything.

Hi! My name is Jill and I am a 5th grade LA and SS teacher in TX. I taught special ed years ago, but now have both inclusion and ESL kids. I am a Christian, a wife, a mother of a 13 year old, a step-mother of 2 grown children and soon to have my 3rd grandson! Whew! I love teaching, but the long hours make is so hard to plan ahead to eat right, get the exercise I need and let some of the stress go. I have been a member of SP on and off for about a year, but decided to make a stronger commitment and really try to make some healthy lifestyle changes with some support from others who understand the stresses we go through. Thank you in advance for the support I know we'll be giving one another! Enjoy your weekend!

I should have said something before - but go to the team page and post on the Talk it Up thread - that's where most people do stop periodically to visit.
The only other thing I can think of to suggest is when you have your team practices - join them as they warm up - what better role model than to do it with them, that way you get your exercise in too.
I'm definately at an advantage - my children are grown and gone :o( so I'm home alone and can make my snacks ahead - apple and reduced fat peanut butter - which I spoon out into little containers for the week on Sunday. Also I will cut up peppers or carrots or celery and have that with 2 T of Hummus. I even eat it at school and share with some of the kids - that way they are learning about healthy snacks and try new things occasionally. I also make my cooked oatmeal the night before and then pop it in the microwave near the end of my exercise video in the AM.
It may not be easy, but if you change one behavior at a time soon you will find you are becoming healthier by developing healthier habits, that you model for your own children - one of my regrets, that I didn't teach mine what I now know. Good luck and keep in touch.

Kudos for the early morning exercise, I think I'd cry if I had to get up before work and do that! Its way to hard to fit in my schedule. I am from Chattanooga. Opry Mills is a great place to visit while you're in Nashville! I can relate to the tiredness after work, I unfortunately do 2 hours of practices and then late nights when the seasons start. I never feel like hitting the gym during the week with all that going on. Going to definitely have to start planning meals ahead of time instead of just stuffing my mouth with junk food!

Welcome Jamie!
While you have a couple weeks left - start setting routines that you will be able to carry through the school year. I get up early and do my walking - my primary exercise, before school. Otherwise I'm just too tired, although immediately after our darlings leave I walk 15 to 30 minutes with another staff member also - started that this past year, hope to continue it. I have found a few snacks that I can eat mid morning and afternoon to keep me and my metabolism burning. Find what works for you.

Interesting that you are from TN. I'm from Penna. but am in TN this week visiting my Dad and sister in Cookeville, we are going to Nashville to stay at my sister's for the end of next week for two days. My daughters are flying in from PA and Phoenix,AZ and we are taking them out downtown to celebrate the youngest's 21st birthday.

What part of TN are you in?

Hi everyone! I joined the team today. Liked the discussions and postings. I am looking forward to making new friends! I am Jamie, a middle school teacher and coach in TN. I am a mother of 3 and just started counting calories for the first time ever! My goal is to lose 20 pounds without gaining muscle. I have played sports and worked out my whole life but apparently need to slow down and take care of myself. The summer has been easy....not so sure how it will go when the school year starts and the stress and lack of sleep kicks in! Any tips?

It's been quite some time since we've has someone active from the UK. We had Carl a couple years ago, but he's since moved on I guess.
30 pounds is VERY doable. Just take it slow and steady adopt one or two healthy behaviors at a time until they are a part of who you are.
For example - I'm a morning exerciser - I just don't feel right if I don't do something in the morning - and that never used to be. Find what works for you. Stop by and visit our talk it up thread.

I'll hijack on the end of the thread - Hello! I'm teaching in Oxford, UK. I'm 25 and I'm hoping to "trim down" - 30 pounds seems like a lot to lose right now! I have already felt inspired, so thank you!

Hi, I've been a sparker since January, but need to rev it up for the summer. I teach fifth grade in Illinois and love my job, though it can be stressful - and really was this year. Hoping the added connection and fellow "teachers with attitude" will jump start my success track. You're all inspirihng!

Hey, I'm Kassandra. I taught 2nd grade for two years, 1st grade last year, and am now back in 2nd. For me, it's the perfect grade.
I am new to "spark pages" and am still trying to learn how to do it. Hopefully I can get in touch with people to inspire me and hope I might even be able to help out others here too.

Hi All you wonderful teachers. Figured I'd jump on this intro thread instead of starting a new one.

My name is Jude and I'm a Title I Reading Specialist this year in the school where I taught 3rd grade for about 13 years. I finished my masters from UVA in May.

Mid 50s, divorced 4 years, kids grown, but not far away. Love my dog, all animals, nature and the beach. I live in VA, but am a FL girl at heart since I was born and raised there.

State Standards are a big stressor in VA, budget. No raises for this year and next. Love my job though! Life is good. Doing South Beach again. Need to lose 35 lbs.

Hi Everyone,
I am too just "catching" up. I've re-joined Spark People after a 2 year hiatus. I've been reading people's posts, and it's highly encouraging to see people making progress, getting support, and just doing it-makes me feel like I can too!

My name's Hillary. I've been in education for 15 years, all of which as a Special Educator in some form or another. I've made the transition to consultant as an Assistive Technology Specialist, and I LOVE my job!
I live in Maine with my husband of 14 years, a son that will be 10 in 22 days, a dog, and 2 cats. I tend to be a person that everyone seems to rely on for one thing or another, and I don't make time for me to exercise, or eat properly. 5 years ago, I lost 40lbs and was healthy, fit, and happy. It's time to ditch the excuses, roll up my sleeves, and get to work.

Awesome! You have every meal planned out weeks in advance. This is something I certainly must do!

I am Christy, a 26 year old 4th Grade math, science, and social studies teacher. I am also in graduate school and look forward to graduating this summer with a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Special Education. The stress and limited amount of time for my needs are minimal; therefore, the way that I eat and my physical activity pretty much depends on the whether or not I want to wake up earlier or stay up late. I really need to figure something out because the weight is causing harm to my heath.

I'm going to try to go back and catch up with everyone, but can't do it tonight. I posted on the "cheat sheet thread" about who I am...

Here's something that I've done. I have all of my dinners planned until Christmas. And I've had the last 2 weeks planned out to a T... but failed miserable with Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but has done really well today. :-)

I'm really looking forward to getting to know people here!

Hey everyone! I just got offered a job YESTERDAY teaching Spanish though my 11 years of prior teaching was high school social science in San Diego. I had gotten married and moved twice and in the smallish town we live in it was tough getting employed. During the interim I felt a little useless and sat in front of the t.v. a bit too much, also practice cooking a little too much...So here I am ready to kick some butt, share the journey of making good choices and dropping some pounds.

Hi! I joined 2 days ago, just found this team! I taught as an Occasional Teacher, doing long term occasionals [mat. leaves etc...] for 3 years in my community. Last year I was hired on by the school board and was at a different school than this year. My new school is pretty nice. We're rural, with 100 students and split grades all the way from Junior Kindergarten to grade 6. I teach 1/2. I have an active 2yo DS at home who takes up most of my time when I'm at home.

I'm really gad to have found some teachers that are going through the same things that I am.

RIght now it's March Break for me, plus report cards are due in office next Wed. so I'm just hanging around the house, FINALLY getting off my but and exercising. SP has really helped motivate me and I am hoping to reach my goal of losing 50 lbs.

I have been teaching for a relatively short amount of time; this is my 6th year. I was a SAHM for many years and got into teaching so it would coincide with my kids' schedules.

I mostly like the job and am good at it. It is insanely hard sometimes, and I really feel most people have no idea of how difficult it is. I resent what I feel is the public perception that teachers should be all things to all people and that all the failings of education can be righted on the backs of teachers. Sometimes I feel I am the wrong person for the job because I have a bit of a quixotic personality and things that don't make sense drive me nutty. There's much in the education biz that doesn't make much sense.

My daughter is a freshman at college; my son is a very recent graduate. My husband is a sound effects editor for movies. I teach high school English. We live in Los Angeles. M

Updating my information, since I see that the last one was 2 years old, and I am no longer at that school district (Thank you God!)

Hi--School Librarian here.

I am "momma" to Sweetheart who is 9. He has a vocabulary of around 40 phrases, with about 20 that are reoccurring favorites. He is fascinated with whispers, and is trying to figure out how to do it. He is the totally spoiled baby. I also have a rescue bird: Princess (who is trying to take over the house as the HEAD and RULER). She is appx 2. She is beginning to relax and learn. She understands UP. But besides terrorizing Sweetheart, that is about it.

I am a civil war re-enactor. I protray 1863 southern poor that has been burnt out of her home, and is now in temporary housing earning money teaching reading and writing and 'rithmetic. I have been re-enacting for 20 years, and my niece has been for 12 years. My nephew used to, but when he turned 16 "he became too old for playing with his aunt."

I crochet beaded purses. I sell most of what I make.
I recently took back up knitting and am in several knitting groups. And just recently opened my mouth and said I would learn how to spin and weave.

I am a middle school librarian who loves her job. I walked into a mess, but am beginning to get it organized. Big advocator of Battle of the Books reading program.

I have just recently joined WW. I am needing accountability in my life.
