I agree with your statement about not getting on a horse that doesn't look ridable. Common sense and knowing your horse will prevent most accidents.

I have to admit I hate wearing them too, the one I bought looks like a huge egg on my head (I call myself Egbert when I wear it)
Generally I don't wear them, when I trail ride I don't - the people at the barn yell at me for not wearing one, the Barn Owner says I should but doesn't insist that his boarders must wear them so i don't in general. It all depends on Lee, how he feels, how I feel, what we are doing etc. If we are trying something new that I know could produce a blowup when I'm on him then hell yeah I wear it. Last night I did - was the first time I'd been on him alone in months, outside, in halter and rope reins (first time at all for that) so I wore my helmet to be safe. Nothing happened :)
My hubby gets angry if I don't wear one, because we all know what happens to people that don't and get dumped and hit their heads.
I just feel if you use common sense you should be ok, use your judgement and deal with the horse that shows up, in other words if its bad enough that makes you think you should be wearing one - DONT GET ON
normally these days I listen to that advice, when I was a kid I didn't care - in fact the jumpier and crazier the horse was the more I loved it - but then I had to wear a helmet. Too old and brittle am I now to do that LOL ok maybe not brittle but I certainly don't bounce like I use to

`are you going to cowboy up or just lie there and bleed
`its a horse. not a dog, not an ATV. When you come to realize that you will understand the true joy of owning a horse
`give credit where credit is due-to you not to a figment of someone's imagination

LMAO, and after i have come off 6 times he keeps the insurance number handy...

i have ridden for years, grew up with out it. Just don't think of it.

that being said i watched a guy come off in the summer of 2009 or was it 08.. his horse got stung and was rocking, like rearing and bucking. when the rider came off he hit his head upside a tree.. it was the darnest thing to watch, seemed slow motion
when his horse went to talk off, i used mine (rowan, not enough hours)to block his path. LOL that was a joke. my horse was like HELL NO and moved right out from under me..
i was on the wrong horse for that move, my old guy would have stood his ground.
so i hit the ground too. that is when i got my first helmet..
Rob the one that hit the tree, still gets physical therapy here and their for it

I have never had a riding helmet on my head. After the 3rd time I came off of Gunner, my husband wanted me to get one. Like you I was turned off by the price. Do you know what I could buy for $150 that I would enjoy so much more than a helmet?? Anyway, never bought one and now that I have fallen 6 times, I think my husband has given up on the helmet, but he keeps our insurance agent's telephone number handy LOL. My barn does not require one and I have only seen two people wearing one there. I should probably get over myself and buy one, but I don't see it happening.

When I was riding on my mom's property I never wore mine. I wore them when I was taking lessons when I was 16 but never during the Parelli clinics or anything like that. Now I wear one because of my new barn's rules. I am not a huge fan but I know why I have to wear them.

My advise is to just wear it enough to get by and maybe you can get used to it if you wear it enough. Also the type of helmet can make a difference in your comfort. Try on different styles you may find one that surprises you.
