I have to admit I hate wearing them too, the one I bought looks like a huge egg on my head (I call myself Egbert when I wear it)
Generally I don't wear them, when I trail ride I don't - the people at the barn yell at me for not wearing one, the Barn Owner says I should but doesn't insist that his boarders must wear them so i don't in general. It all depends on Lee, how he feels, how I feel, what we are doing etc. If we are trying something new that I know could produce a blowup when I'm on him then hell yeah I wear it. Last night I did - was the first time I'd been on him alone in months, outside, in halter and rope reins (first time at all for that) so I wore my helmet to be safe. Nothing happened :)
My hubby gets angry if I don't wear one, because we all know what happens to people that don't and get dumped and hit their heads.
I just feel if you use common sense you should be ok, use your judgement and deal with the horse that shows up, in other words if its bad enough that makes you think you should be wearing one - DONT GET ON
normally these days I listen to that advice, when I was a kid I didn't care - in fact the jumpier and crazier the horse was the more I loved it - but then I had to wear a helmet. Too old and brittle am I now to do that LOL ok maybe not brittle but I certainly don't bounce like I use to
`are you going to cowboy up or just lie there and bleed
`its a horse. not a dog, not an ATV. When you come to realize that you will understand the true joy of owning a horse
`give credit where credit is due-to you not to a figment of someone's imagination
