I am sorry too to hear about another operation for you. I know after my bypass the Dr.s were concerned about my breathing, since I have a slight case of asthma. They had me do a lot of breathing exercises afterwards and when I was at home too.

Oh no... I'm so sorry your sternum's not healing right! I think I would probably get it fixed if it were me, even if it meant more surgery. Hang in there!

Just an update on the poor timing of my bronchitis - it seems there has been some damage to the healing of the sternum. Saw the surgeon last Tuesday and there is a gap where the two sides are suppose to fuse together. I'm looking at surgery again in the new year - probably early January - to fix the problem. Not sure what it entails yet - have to have a CT scan to see the full extent of the problem. But the Doc said it's not serious - I could just let it be and see how it goes, but I am really having a lot of problems with pain in my arm, chest, shoulder and back and when I drive or move from side to side the crunching feels like going through the gears on a standard - the wrong way! So I think I'll just get it fixed.

Haven't had my flu shots yet but have had the pneumonia shot. I can't get the regular flu shot until December. The H1N1 clinics where going on this afternoon and yesterday afternoon at the highschool. I will have to find another location for them.

A couple more weeks of healing and I might have been better able to handle this - or even if it had been just a regular cold - not as much coughing. Can't wait for the meds to kick in. Didn't help that I didn't get much sleep last night. It was a good thing I had the doctor's appointment. Doubt I would have called the dr otherwise.

Anyway, should sleep good tonight and take it easy on the weekend. It will pass.

Thanks for your insights.

Glad your doctor is on top of your issues. The bronchitis may have come at a point in your surgical recovery where your insides weren't quite completely healed enough to withstand the violent coughing. It sounds like that disruption in the final stages of healing, plus the blood thinner have led to your crunching/shifting and bruising symptoms. Also, if an infection was brewing at that end of the incision, then that would have delayed healing as well. Hopefully with the antibiotics and brace you'll feel better soon.
This time of year so many people get sick more easily. Have you had your flu shots and pneumonia shot? Yes, those pesky kids pick up the germs and bring them home to us!

Just got home from the doctor's. From the cardiologists perspective everything is going great. He is happy with the results. As for the other stuff, he called down one of the doctor's from the surgical team to have a look at it. Was the same doctor who was on the floor when I was in the hospital and who discharged me. Anyway, he diagnosed bronchitis - prescribing an inhaler and antibiotic. Also thought there may be infection at the site at the end of the incision. It is red and a hard lump so prescribed another antibiotic for that. I go back and see him next Thursday. He was concerned about the crunching and shifting - thought it was more than it should be at this point in my recovery. I have a brace to wear to stabilize it a bit when I cough.

I am taking aspirin therapy - never even thought about that for the bruising but it makes sense. It has been almost three months since the surgery (Aug 18). The surgeon released me to the cardiologist at the end of September. Everything was going along on track until the coughing started - it has been quite violent - I usually try to brace it like i had to in the hospital. Anyway, we will see how this goes.

I work in finance. Not overly strenuous but quite stressful as this is budget time and getting into interim audit and year end. It's an hour drive to work and I usually put in long hours. Boss probably won't let me put in the hours that I used to though - at least not for a while.

Anyway, you brought up some good points that I hadn't thought of. I'd a been just fine if not for the bronchitis thing. There is a lot of sickness going on around here. I held out for quite a while but finally got hit. Darn teenagers - should never have sent them to school!!!!!

Sneezing and coughing hurt me for a very long time. Even 2 years + later a strong sneeze or cough will hurt. And sometimes I still get that shifting/crunching sensation as well!
Are you on aspirin therapy or another blood-thinner? I'm wondering if the new bruising is related to that where you've been coughing alot with the bronchial thing you've picked up? How long since the surgery? Have you been released by the surgeon yet?
What do you do for work, BTW?

I'm off to see my cardiologist this morning for the first time since the surgery. Not sure what we will find. Have been coughing like crazy all week due to some kind of bug. Chest feels worse than it did right after surgery. It's doing all kinds of shifting and crunching. Does not feel good. Have new bruising at the bottom end of the scar. Not sure what that is about. Anyway, we shall see what he has to say.

One more week off and than I start easing back into work. How swiftly the times goes by. All things considered it was a good time off with lots of rest and de-stressing. Hopefully, I have picked up a few good habits to build upon.
