I agree! I'm checking in here tonight; and just posted a new topic for discussion. It is important to support others, too. Other people who had bypass were very encouraging, and I remember three men that came into my hospital room, and talked about their recovery, the night before my operation. They were reassuring, and sweet, and knew just what to say. I am going to be more active here.
Tonight my husband and I just got home from vacation at the shore. Lots to do, unpacking, and such... Happy to have had an active summer. I hope to continue this commitment to wellness during the fall and winter months, too. more to come; will be blogging

Square dancing was my exercise today. At the Farmers market/Food coop Summer party. I was the only one in square dancing outfit Dress and fluffy slip but the last time I had this dress on was about 15 years ago and it fit. emoticon
It has been a year and about three weeks. I packed for one of the farmers a box 30 lb and it did not give me pain, Other than they said I was not suposed to lift that.

Have not been going to the gym but tracking daily chores has my cardio work out active. Helping pickup farmers market is good weight, when they let me do it. They know I had open heart surgery so they will not let me touch the heavy boxes. even 25lb 1/4 my weight they will not let me do. but there is usually some one that could use an extra hand.

I had an enlarged heart so my flap did not work my cardiologist said when it bothered me enough we can take care of that mummer. So in May I went in for the procedure, camera up my leg, but when they looked aroundthey backedout and schedualed my double bypass and fix my murmer all at once.

I had a double bypass on 5/19. If I hadn't joined spark people and started exercising, I may have not had any symptoms. I'm doing ok but what now?

Wow, that's an amazing story. You were definitely in the right place at the right time!
My story has some similarities in that I'm a 44 year old nurse (OB). "Being on the other side of the bed" is quite a trip, isn't it? As your recovery progresses and it eventually comes time to go back to work, please don't hesitate to contact me (by SparkMail if the board is too public) as you come to terms with the experience you've gone through and the thoughts and feelings that come up along the way. I had a very strong emotional and psychological response related to having gone through such a serious medical/surgical experience coming from my background as a nurse.

Glad you found us,
Michelle, Co-leader Heart Bypass SparkTeam emoticon

Hello everyone,
I am new to this group and a bit different, actually, quite different! I am a 40 year old ICU nurse and I am POD #12 s/p emergent CABG x 1. I was at work 13 days ago, developed cardiac symptoms, and was rushed to the cath lab by my coworkers where I was found to have an extremely rare heart anomaly (an anomalous right coronary artery). I was taken for bypass surgery less than 24 hours and my surgeons thought it was a miracle I'd lived this long given the fact that I played college sports and had a child. This type of anomaly is often responsible for sudden cardiac death. My EF is normal and I was very lucky not to have an MI. Although my other coronaries are completely clean I feel I've been given a second chance at life and don't want to mess it up. As an ICU nurse I never imagined being on the other side of the bed but now I have. This has been an eye opener and my goal is to continue eating right and continue my weight loss (-12 lbs so far).

s/p CABG x 1 (3/25/10)

Live life to the fullest, you never know when you'll be knockin on Heaven's door!

There can be a big improvement in health. I had 6 by-passes done in 2006 and injection fraction was 20%. I was told that that won't change. HAH, my injection fraction is 50% now and I fell that everything is possible.

Just came back from my heart doctor, with good news. My lipid profile was great with a total cholesterol of 116! The chart also shows the ratio of chol/hdl and ldl/hdl, which are used as risk factors for atherosclerosis - with my numbers it showed that I was below average for this risk. I was walking ten feet off the ground for the rest of the day. Of coarse this was only possible with the combination of diet, exercise and medications. I always ask for a copy of my Lipid profile- it gives me a goal to aim for.

It is! But any outdoor walking is a motivator for me. The beach just happens to be the safest here. I used to walk from my house to the beach with the kids when they were young but you can't do that anymore. Yesterday morning I went with my husband and it was so cold and windy we cut the walk short by 1/4 mile. But it was good for him to see I really am doing better. I couldn't make it half the distant two weeks before that. One day at a time!!!

I know what you mean. I always start the week off motivated and by wed. fall off. Then I try to concentrate on each day which starts off good till the afternoon. That is why I can't wait to get back to work. Sitting around by myself is an invitation to eat. That is why I try to get to the beach to walk every afternoon. I am keeping more fruit in the house now so i hit that first which helps. emoticon

I will have to do some research on the davinci robot. Last year when i had to open heart done it was done with the minimally invasive procedure that they had only started doing the August before. Unfortunately for me the valve went bad and they had to do this one the old fashion way. I don't know if you do the nutritional feedback from this site but I found it very helpful in showing me where I was falling short on my minerals and such. the only thing I was good in was the protein. Even my calorie count was too low. I did make a mile over the weekend so now I have to focus on my food intake so my metabolism doesn't slow down. Good luck to you. Joann

It sounds like you really have it together even though it's hard. With all of you knowing that your granddaughter might have problems you can be right on top of her condition. Who knows what they will come up with in the next few years. My surgery was done using the da Vinci robot. They told me that they could not have done it the year before. The advances in medicine are truly amazing.

Rebecca, That was great about the chol. #'s. My DIL's #'s are over 300 despite diet/exercise/and medications which worries her since her husband(my son) died because his arteries were soooo clogged and she is worried their daughter will suffer the same fate. The good part is she is watching what Megan eats like a hawk. I am up to 3/4 of a mile on the treadmill and have to go up and down a flight of stairs to get to it. I hope when I go back to the Dr. I can start exercising the arms. If I get to go back to work then I know they have a hand pedaler I'll use during my break. Before surgery I had started a walking program at work so I know that won't be a problem. Sitting at home is a diet killer so I try to get out doors away from food. Now that I'm the one doing the shopping again it will get easier, I hope! I felt better yesterday when I was able to find a bathing suit that hides all the scarring. Now I'm not afraid to face the summer. At least not anymore than usual. Healthy is my goal right now. My arteries are mostly clear and I plan on keeping it that way. My son is my inspiration. nothing could have saved him but I can save myself and be there for his daughter. Have a great weekend. Take one day at a time!!!!

It sounds to me like you are doing everything you can to get better. In rehab they had a treadmill, stationary bike, one of those machines "pedal" with your arms (my least favorite!!!), and we would walk up step and back down them. I started with one step and went up to three. I am now going to Berkeley Heart Lab's Open Gym two days a week. I do basically the same thing there as I did in rehab except I don't do the steps, I use the recumbent elliptical machine, and I do more stretches.

I had stents put in in March 2005 and again in October 2005. My body was growing scar tissue over them and closing my artery that way, so I had bypass surgery in October 2007. My diet is my problem! I have got to do better. I weigh more than I have ever weighed. I've got to get a grip on it. I feel pretty good these days, but I know I would feel better and have more energy if I got some of this weight off.

I take several medications for cholesterol. I was really pleased that my total cholesterol had dropped to 147 from 219 six months ago!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with nice weather!
Rebecca

Rebecca, I am doing much better. Last chest xray was clear. I am managing 1/2 mile/day. I've been trying some curls with 1 lb wt's but it seems to cause too much pain still. I still fatigue easily but that will come with time. it has been only 6-7 wks and the second open heart in less than 9 mths so it will come but slowly. I didn't do rehab the last time and it has not been mentioned yet this time. the Dr. knows I'm very devoted to doing what I need to get back to a stronger heart. My son died of a heart attack at the age of 29 so he is my inspiration and angel on my shoulder pushing me to keep going. what exercises did they have you do at rehab? I do the walking, outside or on the treadmill, leg exercises and some pilates for the legs. the arms are still limited for a few more weeks. What exercises for the arms did you do in rehab? How are you feeling now? How long ago was your stents put in? What type of diet do you follow? Do you take chol. meds? I know we can all work through these things together with a little support and exchange of ideas. Thanks for the comeback. Keep well. Joann

This is my first time back in awhile, and I saw your latest post, JWCRUISER. I don't have an answer to your question, but I was wondering how you are doing now? Do you have access to a cardiac rehab facility?

I went to one after my stents and later after my bypass surgery. It was very helpful

I hope this post finds you stronger.

Rebecca

Hey guys, I didn't get back on sooner because I had problems with fluid build up around my lungs and have been drained twice already. This has been keeping me short of breath. but yesterday I managed to walk a full block without too much difficulty. Keeping up beat has been my hardest fight. Each set back keeps me down. But the weight has been coming off. right now it's mostly fluid but i still count it. Today i tried the stairs twice so far. Besides the walking and stairs does anyone have any suggestions for light exercises to help build stamina. I am still not allowed to lift my left arm above my head due to the pace maker or lift anything more than 5 lbs. any suggestions will be appreciated.

The swearing in of President Obama, not only means a change for America, but a chance for us to change our lifestyle into a healthier one. I know how easy it can be for us to get a little lazy over time, and to justify that extra piece of candy, or not take the time for exercise. Thinking no one will notice the difference. That maybe where I am going wrong, I am doing this for myself, because my body does notice and respond to the difference- and I must remember that. I am going to celebrate this change in America by putting extra effort into my weight loss goal.
